I was 10 at this time and knew Judy Canova only from drive-in movies before TV. Both Lily Tomlin an Carol Burnett were a few years older and surely were watching this episode--for inspiration.
You can clearly see the look of disappointment on the lady lifeguards face after Arlene correctly guesses her occupation right off the bat.
Not to say how disappointed John was! I bet that he had looked forward several conferences with her. :) 3:21

I absolutely love this show and it’s panelists .! They are all my favorites !
It appeared to me that Carol’s heart suddenly sank when Arlene guessed her occupation. She concludes her visit with: I’ll come again sometime’ Carol’s clever and appropriate response under pressure on national TV. Quite impressive IMHO.
She should have said, 'I'll come again when I'm a ticket scientist.'

Yes in that time the vast majority of the contestants were very shy and nervous. Those who were not will be remembered. Like the southern young blond who kept the straight face while joking.. I am sorry I don't remember her name.

I can't help to notice there is one gentleman in the audience who's laugh is so infectious that it makes you laugh when he laughs 😆 😄 😂
I love Judy Canova. Even though she did a lot of fun type things with her singing, she actually had a beautiful and amazing voice.
Wow! Yet another one of those rare instances where one of the panel's "free guesses" was correct as to the contestant's profession. As was stated, this was the fourth time that had happened in the history of the program. While it was amazing and even fun to have that happen, I think things were improved when they finally eliminated the "free guesses" as well as the "walk of shame" and had the round begin with questioning. Shaking hands with the panel on the way out worked very nicely for regular contestants and mystery guests, in my opinion.
I totally agree about the 3 wild guesses, which were mostly a waste of airtime, except in those rare instances when the guess was funny. And in this case, it wasted that fine looking girl's appearance, and the panel's chance to go through the process, which usually had some quaint humor involved.
And yes, it's fun to watch how the show evolved as the producers figured out what worked best.
terranova22 I think “regular” was used to refer to contestants who were not famous people as opposed to the mystery guests who were mostly celebrities or other very well known people.
If they didn't want people to guess the occupation on the free guesses, why'd they have them?

@@kristabrewer9363, just some hunches on my part, but.. they did it to..A. give a false impression to the audience that the panelists are now qualified to ask this person questions more than the audience, and thus the panelists become pseudo experts because they have had more up close contact with the challenger than the audience. It falsely establishes credibility while simultaneously gets the audience fired up if those guesses are not even in the "ballpark"= engages the audience one way or the other.
Or..B. the quiz show producers just wanted to hope that the panelists hit a longshot guess very seldom, to drive home the point that it takes questions, not initial guesses to throughly narrow down and find the person's occupation, and thus, engage the audience to listen to the questions, and not leave the room even momentarily, and miss the ad-spots..
Or..C. I have no idea what I am talking about..

I love this show so much. So fun, witty, and classy. The chemistry between the panelists and John Daly is a delight to watch and listen to. I remember some of the shows from the late 60s and 70s but these episodes were from before my time. Love Bennet Cerf. When I was in kindergarten I got a pop-up book of Limericks by him with really fun, Mod era illustrations that I still have. A but if tape here and there but in good shape for a kid's book from about 1968 or so... my brother and I read the heck out of it. But as for this show, it's my night cap. I work as a live-in caregiver 4 days a week and then do two nights of overnight 10 hour shifts and I watch these shows to relax and decompress because my job can be very stressful and exhausting. Sometimes what I hear on this show is the most intelligent conversation I hear in days. I just love it.
Delightful show with good clean humor, that is why I love it.

I would even say suspicious. How would one derive mousetrap from those questions?
Useful, metal, non electric, moving parts (audience laughs) that show, bought in department store, portable, comes in contact with body (audience laughs), but not on body. Dorothy was smart. You can see when she gets it at 10:27. Then, audience laughs at pleasurable sensation.

Dorothy never was a big humorist but when she said the woman gave john an odd look, that she must be a mind reader. That was so funny and a clever joke.

Such a great segment with Judy Canova. I went to Jr. High and High School with her daughter Diana (I was a year younger and not a social friend but I was in the instrumental music department). Her daughter closely resembled Judy (back in the 1960s through early 1970s) when Judy was a young woman. So lovely lively spunky funny and pretty!
. . . and I should add that Judy Canova had quite a fine singing voice, when she wasn't clowning around.
Judy Cadova reminds me slightly Ruth Buzzi.
One of the funniest mystery guest voices this side of June Havoc.
Canova's radio sitcom turns up every so often on that Old-Time Radio series "When Radio Was." And it is still pretty funny.
Miss Rubin was the 7th contestant to be guessed correctly in the free wild guesses. According to tv.com, a motorcycle cop, an atomic scientist, and an umpire were guessed in the lost episodes. After that, a football player, a trapeze artist, and a second umpire were guessed. Arlene mentions Santa Claus (lost episode), but he was a MG, so no free guesses for him. He was probably guessed very quickly, perhaps with the first question.
Arlene said “good night boys” for the 14th time.
Just read on the What’s My Line Facebook page that Charlene Schafer (second contestant) died a few days ago at 86.
I haven't heard much of Canova's radio series-- as I recall it prominently featured Mel Blanc-- but when I've heard her guest starring on other shows, she's always been funny. Her daughter, Diana Canova, had a pretty good career of her own. Comic chops must run in the family. Diana Canova was one of my favorite actors on one of my favorite sitcoms, "Soap", which unfortunately she left before it ended its run. Her absence is one of many reasons the last season is notably weaker.

Judy Canova was a bit before my time--but I often get her confused with Minnie-Pearl, who also played the "hayseed" role on TV.
Her daughter looks and sounds just like her. You are correct. "Soap" survived the loss of Robert Guilluame to his spinoff, "Benson," because the writing was still sharp and the actors were at the top of their game. Diana's departure to star in another Witt-Thomas-Harris show, "I'm a Big Girl Now," with Danny Thomas, coupled with a change in writers, led to a dip in quality in the show's fourth and, ultimately, final season.
I remember Diana Canova in a sitcom called "I'm a Big Girl Now," in which she starred with Danny Thomas. I think I remember this because the little girl who played her daughter on the show was about the same age as me at the time. I had no idea Diana had a famous mother.
I had never heard of Judy Canova before this video. She was a really good mystery guest. Learning about some mystery guests I had never heard of is just one of the things I like about this show.
Diana canova who played Corinne on soap is her daughter.
Judy Canova says that her last appearance on Broadway was 1939 in the musical comedy "Yokel Boy" by Lew Brown and Charles Tobias where she starred against Buddy Ebsen, Lois January and Phil Silvers. The most famous songs in the musical must be "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" and, interpolated later, "Beer Barrel Polka".
I'll wager Bennett didn't go see "Yokel Boy" in 1939. Dorothy probably skipped it too. When performers from the Grand Ole Opry came to Carnegie Hall, Dorothy advised music lovers in New York to leave town. By the way, "Yokel Boy" was playing on Broadway when "The Wizard of Oz" premiered in August of 1939. Buddy Ebsen would have been well aware of the film he had been forced to drop out of as he came and went to the Majestic Theatre every day.
Yet another one of those rare mystery guests I'd never heard of until I saw them on WML. Judy Canova? Not a name I knew before.

I was born in 1934, so grew up listening to Judy Canova on radio. She came across to me as being more loud and shrill than musical or funny. But a lot of comedy was like that--more like vaudeville, back then. It took a while for a very young person to make connections and develop a sense of humor. My humor developed a bit late to appreciate Judy Canova on radio, but she is much better here after an opportunity for a second look.
As a kid in the 40's/50's. I listened to Canova's radio show and one of the famous routines was the "Si & Sye" (sic) one with Mel Blanc. I'm attracted to funny looking/cute women and she qualifies. She also would sing seriously toward the end of her shows. I have a couple of her radio shows on cassette. I may order more from OTRCAT (MP3) of her shows.Her daughter was a fine actress too,Diana Canova.
I’m not a big drinker, but you could make a drinking game out of every time Steve Allen says “Oh Dear”!

I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that Miss Schaefer, very soon after this, graduated from nursing school in Chicago, became an RN (at Walther Memorial Hospital), and married a gent named Jerome Fiepke. He was an avionics in the Army, but then became a magnet... person. He was eventually chief magnet design engineer at Crucible Magnetics in Kentucky. They had 5 kids together. He died in 2013, and as far as I can tell, Charlene is still with us.
Not anymore. She died a year or so after this comment :(
"Old man" John Daly was 40 when this episode was broadcast.
The way he carries himself, he does comes off much older than 40-- not that he necessarily looks older than that.
Interesting that he was actually the youngest of all the regular stars of this show - Bennett, Dorothy, and Arlene were all older than he was.
My father used to have a saying for people who looked a lot older than they really were - "Must have been a rough life".
Observer Guy - People who are 40 years old today look a lot younger. Maybe we have better diets, or see age differently. When Steve Allen said something about the guest not being a heroine, did he mumble something about morphine?

I think he was probably looking to see if they were ready for the next guest, either at the director or the area the contestants entered the studio.
Judy Canova, mother of Diana Canova, not only appeared in films but had a huge hit show on radio, 1943 to 1955.
Bennett Cerf was always a fair snob and you can see that when couldn’t believe Canova, who portrayed mostly country type folks, was in a Broadway play. Canova was very successful in radio and the musical stage, but never made the transition to TV or movies so isn’t well known now.
It didn’t take long for the cameraman to forget who correctly guessed lifeguard! He panned over Bennett instead of Arlene!

I wonder if this is why they ended up dispensing with the free guesses? I quite liked them, though not the walk down the panel (so awkward).

Sad to say that this is my first introduction to Judy Canova, as far as I can remember. I would like to hear some of her radio work. I probably have seen her in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, just don't remember!

I remember her from movies when I was a kid. She was a hoot!! You may still be able to order a movie or two of hers, I don't know. That's how I got the two I have.

This is one of the three to six (depending on which source you believe) times the wild guess was correct. The next season, the wild guesses were taken out of the show, and the contestant was introduced and seated.
Canova was very popular in the 40s and could (and often did) hold out for more money when it was time for negotiations. Canova is the mother of "Soap" star Diana Canova. Canova's answer of "no" to the question of "Are you a brunette?" was correct, but is hard to tell on a black and white screen: Canova had beautiful auburn hair.
+Tom Barrister I never liked the walk before the panel or the wild guesses. They seems like just filler. The panel walk seemed weird and the wild guesses seemed like they were always merely going for a laugh that always seemed to fall flat. Which is too bad because the last contestants always seem to be cut short.
And the introduction of the panel and John always was odd to me. I commonly skip it and go to where the job of the first "contestant" is revealed, which is usually 3:30 in each episode. Three and a half minutes before the game of the game show starts!

I think the show became more relaxed when they eliminated the walk and the guesses. John and the panel could have a chance to talk with each contestant.
I hadn't seen this one but the pause from Daly after Arlene guessed life guard and pausing before even asking Bennett.....I was like....oh she guessed it. I've gotten good at reading John Daly.

Once the lie detector was put in the home the panel was toast.

If memory serves me correctly, all of the wild guess picks were made by Arlene Francis. I don't know if she was especially intuitive but the wild guess thing really ruined it for guests who went to the trouble of traveling a good distance and getting dressed up only to have Arlene pick the occupation in five seconds. I'm not far enough along with the series yet to see at what point they did away with the free guesses and the Walk of Shame but those are two things that needed to be jettisoned sooner than they were.
The contestants received $150 for travel.After 9 correct guesses they eliminated this and the walk.😊
I also notice that at some point (don't know where yet but at some point) John eliminated an all-too-frequent question by the panelists by intimating not just that they were salaried or self-employed but also whether they dealt in a product or a service. A lot of air time blown on a question asked of everybody, BY everybody; that adds up and frequently the last challenger was summarily hurried off the stage before they ran out of time for the outro.
The last contestant got the full prize😊

I read that surprisingly, John was very popular with women and considered a great catch by Virginia Warren, after he left his first wife. His first wife was found dead at the foot of the stairs in her home a few years after John divorced her. It was listed "cause unknown".
Yes, I noticed that too. He's reacted at least with another woman too, I remember he didn't say anything for a long time and just stared at her.

See the panel introductions in next week's show for follow-up. Steve appears to be wearing a somewhat badly tied real bow tie, and says that many viewers sent him ties after his clip-on tie fell off this week. Dorothy comments too. I haven't worn a clip-on bow tie since I was a small boy not too many years after this; when I do use a pre-tied bow for convenience these days (such as concert dress) it at least has a neck band!
Right at the beginning, I noticed that his clip-on bow tie was barely clipped on. A huge gap showed between his collar and the tie. It seemed to me that, once his tie came off past the 11:00 mark, that the top button of his shirt was missing, the one at the collar level, so the clip of the tie was the only thing holding his collar together, which was really too much to ask of it. I'd have thought someone backstage could have produced a needle and some white thread -- and even a spare button -- and sewed the button back on before the program began . . . .

When I first watched this, I had no idea who Judy Canova was. But I just got here after seeing her do a cameo in the Busby Burkley number "Lady in Red" ua-cam.com/video/GfjHGxcBN58/v-deo.html and now I know who she is.

Nice to know Steve wore a pre-tied bow tie, rather than a bow tie one has to tie. For whatever reason, one had the impression a lot of men in the 1950s knew how to tie a bow tie, rather than use a clip-on or whatever pre-tied bow tie. It has been decades since I have seen any bow ties sold in stores other than specialty stores.
In the fourtys my mother had six boys, and clip on bow ties was essentially a time saver😊

The panel didn't had a chance to guess the last contestant's line, Operates a Lie Detector. Partly because he was self-employed and partly because they was misled when he and John said yes to the question if the product was to be found in the home.
+Johan Bengtsson same thing i was thinking, they got 6 no's before dorothy asked if it could be found outside the home. it should have been said it wasn't normally found in a home.
At the end, they say he takes the machine to the homes

Just rewatched that part after reading BrianG’s comment, he’s right, Arlene started out by asking, “Is it ever used in the home.”

I love how Bennett Cerf acted totally clueless as to Judy Canovas Broadway show that she did in New York that he didn't recognize. It must have been very embarrassing that he didn't know the name of the show or maybe it just didn't play for a long time.

The New York Times reviewer thought it would appeal to the out-of-town crowds who had come to NYC for the World's Fair.

How likely is it to guess a contestant’s occupation? The “Bible” of types of occupations is called the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, the current edition of which lists just under 1000 jobs. In two years WML had approximately 300 non- celebrity contestants, making the probability of one or more correct guesses 0.3 or 30%. Although sometimes a contestant clearly does not fit the stereotype for a job, most often, he or she does. Therefore the walk of shame might eliminate up to half the range of 1000 to 500, upping the probability of one or more successful guesses to 0.6 (60%). Using these assumptions, consistent failure to guess correctly would have been suspicious.
Both times I've seen the panel get the wild guess right it was Arlene who guessed. Anyone know about the other times?

Dixie Alexander I'm not good at these kinds of questions, but I'm fairly sure it was a lot more than twice. I think Fred Allen did it once, too. I have a visual memory of look of surprise when it happened, but I'd never be able to figure out which show it is.

After Arlene's win, John said that he thought this was the 3rd time ever that the panel had won a free guess. The panel immediately corrected him to say that it was the 6th win. In fact, it might even be the panel's 7th win. The panel then began counting off the wins by saying they had guessed an "atomic scientist, two umpires, a baseball man, and Santa Claus." However, Arlene's "sports" comment was probably in error, because she had guessed a football player once, not a baseball player. In addition, regarding Steve's "umpires" comment, we only have a record of one umpire being guessed. In a 1952 magazine article, Arlene did mention two wins - for a motorcycle cop and for an atomic scientist. The Santa Claus win is unknown. They were all guessed on early lost episodes. There is also a win the panel didn't state, and it was Arlene's win for the trapeze performer. In piecing this history together, I believe that this is the 7th win, and that three of the wins are on the early lost episodes. I thought the answers for the last guy were odd. E.g., he was an operator, which is a service, but they said there was a product. Bennett seemed a little perplexed by that at the end as well.
