    Nicely clear video Joe. I think people get tempted to take a mountain of gear when on a canoe trip. In my experience, it just means that you are always searching through your gear to find stuff. This amount of gear is a great trade off with comfort but not too many unnecessary things. Have a great trip mate, Frazer.

    Joe, eazy squeezy chair. 3" O ring. Make a 5-6 foot ~20-30# double chain trammel with S hooks at ends and each foot. O ring a tripod or quadpod stake chair. Notch the top of stakes. Wrap trammel around each stake. Use multiple S hooks for tightening up chain or X-crossing trammel across stakes. Put mattress pad (or blanket) on chains for ultralightweight 3 piece camp seat. Also use O ring and trammel chain for cooking tripod/quadpod.

    For black flies I've had great success treating my clothes and tent/hammock with permethrin. For deer flies, deer fly patches that you stick to a hat work CRAZY GOOD.

    Emerald is so cute!!! Black flies are not, you are in for a surprise Kyle. I have noticed that the farther north one goes the more vicious they seem to get. Having seen Doug's video I assume you guys are out there now, have fun, be safe and good luck with the black flies!

  • @canadianpaddler644

    Hi Joe, you are well prepared, as usual, but you are missing two absolutely necessary pieces of gear: 1. you must bring a wide brim waterproof hat: it's going to help a lot with black flies and let you see when paddling in the rain; 2. you need a tube of polysporin in yout med kit: when very humid you need an antibiotic cream to heal even the smallest scratches. In addition if you could replace your regular lip balm with aloe vera one it'll do a double duty for burns and after bite. For your bag you may just want to get another 30 L dry bag and put some handy things into it and you won't need a 120 L portage bag. Just my two cents from some recent experience.

    for black flies I use a bushlite bug jacket. I used it for years working in the bush for a logging company. The jacket lasted 4 years of rough abuse and is the best jacket I have used. I bought mine at Canadian tire for about $45 worth every penny. Also I know this might sound stupid but "Kevlar gloves" nothing spoils a trip more than a bad cut on your hands. Use them when cleaning fish or chopping or cutting wood. I have had a couple of trips spoiled by someone with a bad gash. The gloves clean easy and dry fast, it is cheap insurance. Another thing is if you dont want to carry a athletes foot powder and you do end up with foot issues, grey fire pit ash will get you by in a pinch. OH YA WHERE IS YOUR FILET KNIFE?

    I would strap your rain gear to the top of the pack, on the outside, and see if that gives you enough to close it. rolled or folded water hitting it shouldn't get into it very far, and it's designed to repel water anyway, so it doesn't need to be inside the dry bag. just have to make sure it's well secured, especially being on a canoe.

    I always suggest a couple bungees, It wouldn't be a clean look, but you could stow the waxed bag bungeed to the outside of the big bag, and save enough room to close it. Its waxed, so it should be ok in the weather right? (or wrap it to one of the cross members in the canoe as a light padding until you need it. during portage and such.)

    • @tcressman
      @tcressman 8 років тому

      I was going to say that. Since it folds down so nice, I would also think about figuring out a quick way to strap it to my belt or something so that it hangs below the pack or on the back. Didn't think about strapping it on the canoe. Good thought!

    • @feellnfroggy
      @feellnfroggy 8 років тому

      So I forgot about this, but I sewed Fastex buckles to my Ruck and Radio bag in the Army, then I could just clip the secondary bag to the primary for travel, And it unclipped easily instead of untying or unpacking etc. Then both packs could remain packed or stowed.

    • @tcressman

    Joe, I'm going on a canoe trip with 3 friends for a week. We will be going with a travel agency since it will be our first canoe trip. Your video's are super useful to me. I have a question: What is your opinion about sandals? I have realy good ones and i like them a lot. we will be doing small day hikes as we feel like it. The trip will be in Norway on 3 lakes. if we want to switch lakes, the organisation will bring a cart to transfer our gear. I'm considering getting neoprene socks as well (i already bought the 3mm neoprene gloves and they work great). Fashion and aesthetics aside, do you think sandals and neoprene socks will sufice or would you strongly recommend closed shoes?
