In Cambodia and Vietnam they use a traditional instrument called a troh, which seems to be family of this violin. The troh goes back to long before that part of Asia ever saw a violin. I am amazed at the correspondence between the first such instruments in South Africa and on the other side of the world in Cambodia.
As one has become want to expect from David Kramer, this is a wonderful "piece of history" & even a brief journey into the "unknown" for many who profess to know the "Collective" treasures" of SA music, dance & priceless flavour which makes up our nation. I must admit, the first dance reviewed on this clip, reminded me of two of the aspects of this dance style, I have witnessed well before I knew of it's origin. 1) The "Vaalie" visitors often adopted this "style of dance" when they visited the beaches of Durban in Mid Summer, when they saw us "locals" walking on the (hot) sand, without our slops (beach shoes). They soon found out that the sands were very hot for their soft feet & resorted to this mode of cover up for the fact that their feet were suddenly "on fire". The next step in this "dance" (Not shown on the vid) was to throw down a towel and hop onto it, so as not to make a complete spectacle of themselves. And 2: I have seen this dance style adopted, on some of Durban's beaches in the 60s, once the police have left, after one of those "holding the joint" was alerted to a fast approaching band of police officers. This form of the dance was supposed to be a discrete way of finding the join which was hastily buried in the sand, so as to momentarily eliminate the evidence.
