They don't look real, but they do look better than the sterile realism of the current GTs. The PS1 games also had something the later ones don't: a sense of speed.
Amazing fact:The game required five years to complete. During an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, it was revealed that development of Gran Turismo started in the second half of 1992. Yamauchi added that at different times there were only seven to fifteen people assisting him. When asked how difficult it was to create Gran Turismo, Yamauchi remarked: "It took five years. In those five years, we could not see the end. I would wake up at work, go to sleep at work. It was getting cold, so I knew it must be winter. I estimate I was home only four days a year."[9]
Nobody had ever made a game anything like this before and it showed. The number of cars, tuning options, car shopping simulation, license tests, replay cameras and sheer number of races was just massive a game for the time.
This game's reward system was perfect. I LOVED struggling to win and then beefing the car up until I was destroying everyone, then a few races later you got the same excitement as it took more and more to beat your opponents. They don't make them like this anymore!
This was one of the games that I would play with my father when I was a kid. He passed away last year from cancer and watching this video makes me so nostalgic. Not only did it change my view on racing games, but it also left me with warm memories of my father.
+JRRacing64 GT1 and GT3 are my favourites. Played GT4 a little, any and all GT games on the PS3 aside from the classics that may have been ported over (not sure if they have), yeah no.
+JRRacing64 It's not even nostalgia. I remember not liking Gran Turismo 2 or 3 as much back then. The series has lost a lot of its sense of speed, and therein its fun.
I can't remember if it was 2 or 3 but was the first GT that was going to have formula 1 cars and they scraped the idea and the coding for those cars was still in the game. With the gameshark you were able to manipulate your cars and put F1 chassis with F1 grip on your standard cars. Was freaking amazing.
I remember playing this with my buddies a LOT taking turns on the controller after/during endurance reaces, taking long pauses to decide which car or uprgrade to buy, and toking all the time :) Such joy and fun, still the best driving simulator for me! Also, i was the best "driver" amongst them, so i had to do the licenses for everyone (made most of them at the first try, so i saved a lot of time for everyone).
I remember that when I first played GT 2, I was a little disappointed because I thought that its graphics were actually inferior to GT 1. Did anybody else had that same impression, or was it only me?
I still have my original memory card for this game when it came out, my first PS1 still works perfectly, and my game is in perfect condition, even my case still has both booklets in near mint condition! This is my life right here. I STILL play it.
The physics engine in the replays still looks great today. In 1998 it was from another universe versus previous arcade games like Ridge Racer, which was still fantastic to play.
I remember thinking this was so realistic with the car reflections and the replays. Ever since then the Toyota Supra Castrol GT; It was love at first sight. Still is one of my favorite cars of all time.
BOMBACLOT ELROY Gaming has come so far, but we're not getting better. I have no doubts to remember that PS1 generation was much better. Gaming community nowadays are either kids demaning more FPS games or greedy people, complaining about every games' aspects.
wkeil1981 so you hopped onto the XBOX bandwagon, after the Red Rings?... not smart.. shoulda stayed with PS... GT5** is the real deal and GT& will be hot shit for PS4...
Jeff Rose Because who doesn't love cars without an interior that sound like a vacuum? It baffles me how even with the increased space they now have on ps4, kaz or whatever his name is, still said there will still be standard cars...... Bruh..
paul mcgettigan No you just suck at the game... Dont take it out on me cause you cant enjoy a racing game.. you probably boosted you're money b-spec'in it GT4 thats why you like it more lol...
I fell in love with this game the day my mate brought this game over to my yard back in 1997. Even now watching this video of a classic game, the menu does not seem out of place in shape or form.
The intro music... the game... everything about it... there will NEVER be another game like it. never. ever...ever. Future games need to look back to their fathers, and see how and why games like these were just so amazing, i miss how these games were, gt forever.
I swear I remember g.t. 1 and even 2 having flat images for the cars as they drive, that would change according to the view angle to give the effect of 3d.
Ahhhh! Gran Turismo 1! The classic game of all racing games. The one game that broke the barrier of racing games! I remember playing it for the first time in 2000. I know I was late, but when I played it, it changed my racing life. Now I play GT 3 and 4, but I would still refer to GT1 for guidance. I guess that is how I got good at racing games...
Christmas of 1998 I received a Playstation Dual Shock with an extra controller and Gran Turismo. Probably will be remembered as the best christmas the rest of my life. The year after that, getting GT2, was a close second I will say. Played the hell out of the first two and then once Forza debuted in 2005, I never looked back and enjoyed many hours of Forza 1, 2 and 3. The satisfaction of piloting the racecars in Forza 3 with ALL the assists turned completely off and the full manual gearbox is something to be experienced.
I remember my friends, and I, used to spend whole weekends, sleeping over at each others places, playing this game. It was so cool ! I'ts the first time in like 10-12 years i have seen this game. It brings memories. Especially the menues, and the menu sound. So awesome !!
I remember when I was 3 in 1999, my bro would play this game. I loved the game sooo much I would ask him if he could play it. Haha. Man I remember Tombraider, this, and Gex, Spiral the Dragon...grew out of video games, but this takes me back haha
i had this game when i was younger i lent it to my neighbor and he moved with it and i havnt been able to find a copy until now and i just started playing it and man......i love it
Same as me, I was introduced to it in 1999. My friend kept bugging me to play it but I didn't want to. I played on the High Speed Ring in an R33 and fell in love instantly. Happy times!
Oh my god. The memories.... I was in third grade when I got this game. It was one of my favorite games ever. Gran Turismo 5 is one of the three reasons I got a ps3. The other two are MGS4 and FF XIII.
It's crazy to think this video is now older than the game was when the video was made. I still play the game sometimes on my PSP, I think it has kept up well after 22 years!
This almost gets emotional! this is where life began. was the first racing I ever played and actually the only racing game i ever enjoyed even to this day. GT forever, oh and forza is nice....
Funny how back then, this game looked photo realistic to us. Nothing else could even come close. It's was simply mind-blowing. Now it looks like a blurry pixel/polygon fest. It makes you realise Time waits for no one....with that said. Great game. Played it for 100'a of hours. Great memories. Thanks for sharing.
This game was awe-inspiring back in the day. I remember back in 1998 I didn't like ANY racing games except the kart games. Regardless, this game still captured me and I fell in love with it and GT2.
A friend of mine had this game when it was released and I remember we couldn't believe how amazing the graphics were. We frequently commented about how it was like watching the real thing on TV.
off course they are, this game was a real slap when it came out. just the fact that you could watch awesome replays of your races was very new to me. this is where i started to play car games a little bit seriously.
It's funny that GT1 to GT2 represents all that has changed in the series. Overall GT1 is a better game than GT2, this despite all improvements in GT2, it just shows how you improve a game but in the end it all comes down to gameplay, GT1 is better refined, the AI is more in pace the game flows better and the soundtrack is great. GT2 has slightly improved physics, graphics (despite the gloss) and car inventory, and longer simulation mode, stage r11 and mini auto ring are missing but there's other newer tracks in the game. Whereas in GT1 the car you earned in simulation would get you through the next racing series, in GT2 you have to start grinding to complete all races especially the model specific races.
I agree. Despite the lower number of cars and races, GT1 had more of a focus overall where GT2 was all over the place when it came to its simulation mode. The same focus from GT1 could be said for GT3, while GT4 had a similar simulation mode to GT2, but better.
I loved the opening sequence and music for this game, I always let it run all the way through before playing. I always buy the used white Toyota Supra to start , and after building up some credits, I would get a Mitsubishi Eclipse and go all out with the mods and get the blue racing support mod. Set the driver view inside the car and turn the crappy music off, this is the best racing game ever made.
GT was the racing game that really started it all. Adding parts, setting up spring rates, etc, license tests, replays to take a breath and enjoy your success/failures. The Nissan R34, was it?, was a beast. Best game to play vs a friend until GT2 or Test Drive Hot Pursuit. The replays blew us away. For fun, see how fast you can win the toughest series...buy one car, I chose the Supra, and smartly do as few races/series as possible. Awesome game. I'm bruasGT online.
This is one of the greatest games ever, certain game franchise's feel like they're more than a game. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, and Gran Turismo come to mind for me.
I started out with the RX-7 too. thats my favorite mazda car next to the miata. gr review man, i miss that old arcade music they had back then. just hearin it is instant nastalgia.
nice.. I remember when I first got this game back for my 10th birthday... I had bought a dodge viper within the first 45 + minutes of playing... I got the licenses really fast, raced, and saved up enough for a viper.
Fantastic game. I remember as a kid finally mastering the International-A license on a Saturday morning which I had previously thought was impossible and opening up the rest of the game.
Arcade Mode and Simulation Mode (Gran Turismo Mode in PAL and Japanese versions). In the arcade mode, the player can freely choose the courses and vehicles they wish to use. Winning races unlocks additional cars and courses.
My favorite cars were the Honda Prelude, the TVR Cerbera, the Subaru Impreza and the Acura NSX. It was also cool you could do a "racing" upgrade that would totally change the looks of some cars and was cheaper than buying all the parts. They took that option out.
WOW I remember playing this on my ps1 as a kid, it was one of my first games! Looking back at it now, the graphics are actually amazing for a '98 game. Im glad I grew up in the 90's the 90's Was Awesome!
I remember buying this game along with the analog controller at Electronics Boutique the day it came out. It wasn't called EBGames back then. I spent hours playing this game!
thank you!!!! it changed my life too lol! lets start a petition to get sony to remake GT for play station 3. keep the cars, intro, menus, soundtrack exactly the same. just redo the graphix. the rx-7 was my car too! had all three generations in real life. got the GT card and i was like a virtual millionare with more credits than i ever needed. had every car. REMAKE GT1!!!!!!!!!
I remember when those graphics looked 'so real'
I feel ya..

All that work for such a shitty game 🤔.
@@ThatGingerCuntFromTerminator2 Why is it bad? It's not up to par to the recent entries but it's nothing to sneeze at even today...

Yes. The reward systems in Forza Motorsport 8 and GT7 are nowhere near even Gran Turismo 1998!

This was one of the games that I would play with my father when I was a kid.
He passed away last year from cancer and watching this video makes me so nostalgic. Not only did it change my view on racing games, but it also left me with warm memories of my father.
I always liked GT1 the most out of all the games in the series. Nostalgia has a bit to do with that, lol.

I'm probably gonna end up buying this game since I have 3 others in the series so far :)
Not the first one, but I still play the second one like crazy. I think it holds up very well even today.
Gran Turismo is my childhood.

This was my first racing game ever. The beginning of pure awesomeness and a fantastic, loving relationship to cars in general.
I admire GT4, but handling is better in previous games.
The physics engine in the replays still looks great today. In 1998 it was from another universe versus previous arcade games like Ridge Racer, which was still fantastic to play.
2023, GRAN TURISMO 1 is now 25 years old.... Time really flies.
I still have the whole series,1, 2, 3 A Spec, Concept, Prologue 4, 4, Prologue 5, 5 & later today.... 6 😋

I still play this game all the time, and I have tons of racing games. Love the music and the replays!
GT2 best gran turismo game ever made
Agreed on this one. GT6 is on par with GT2 for me.
Yeah true. Gran turismo 6 is getting better updates.
