When it comes to sports Jamaica does stand out. It is impressive how such a small country can compete with countries what have a GDP per capita that is 10 times that of Jamaica.
(They are not great at winter sports though😋)
It would be interesting to find out why. Much of it is cultural I'm sure, but I would wonder if many of its citizens could trace their ancestry (if they could, most can't because, well you know) back to certain populations in West Africa which may generically predispose them to be very good at certain track and field sports.
This is interesting. I would encourage anyone looking into this to read Ralph Mann’s book on sprinting & hurdling mechanics.
Hurdlers based on physics don’t get over 9m/s horizontal velocity (75% speed of elite sprinters). Horizontal velocity is not necessarily a predictor of hurdle performance. The comparison/weighing to 100m sprint performance may conflate the goal here.
Why not use weight or BF%? A huge different in hurdles is the Vertical Force needed to clear the hurdle. Smaller, lighter hurdlers have an advantage here as not needing to produce as much vertical force. They can generate the required force quicker if they are not heavy.
I think Japan’s beating the odds will be less impressive when you realize they probably have far more healthier people that fit the perfect hurdle height criteria 😅
