A Historic Salt Furnace in SW Arkansas

  • This summer at the Arkansas Archeological Survey/Society Training Program we uncovered the remains of a historic salt furnace. Watch it being excavated and Dig Director Dr. Carl Drexler explaining more about it and what a surprisingly interesting find it was.     There is an illustration of another historic salt furnace in the video and this is its full citation: The map is from S. Allen Skinner (1971) Historical Archeology of the Neches Saline, Smith County, Texas, page 27. This version had the labels clarified by Jennifer Hatchett for her 2008 thesis “Archaeological and Historical Investigations of Site 41AS95, a Mid-Nineteenth-Century Salt Works on St. Charles Bay, Texas” where it appears on page 34
