Looking forward to the next chapter in my life! Have you had any major changes, what helped you move forward? 👋🏼😍
My mother decided to downsize after 35 years and change city for better weather, and to be closer with us.
She was sick at the time so I did the declutter and decided everything. She now has 5% of the books she had, and I kept all the photos and sentimental items that could fit in 3 boxes.
Why 3 boxes? Because that is what can fit in a car if she will ever move again.
It took 3 months and lots of colourful post it note: yellow for trash, pink for "keep", green for "donate", orange for "gift to family and friends".
You stick the post it note once and will not change your mind ❤you

Both owned and rented. We will buy an apartment (as we already did for both of our kids).
Well my two sons and daughter all left home have children of their own but they all live near we’ve not downsize
But I can understand how thrilling to look at your stuff and only keep must haves. While going on your adventure 😙
We lost our home to a fire in December 2023. Spent several months living with relatives while sorting out insurance and looking for house to buy. We've been in new house since last fall. I have been trying to be very mindful of what I bring in. But now that we've lived here awhile I'm ready to reorganize somethings.
Hi Diane. Don’t know if you will see this, but want you to know that I and many here are sending you love as you go through the aftermath of your mom’s passing.
I’m sure returning to videos is the last thing you need to deal with as you try to cope with it all. But please know you are VERY missed. If you decide to come back we will all be thrilled.

I’m seeing some comments about “what about family gatherings, please think of your kids” and as kind as those sentiments are, I would love to chime in as a child of parents who are in their retiree years. We don’t care what house they live in. We don’t want them to live in a house for us to maybe one day live in-we want them to love their lives and have fun! ❤❤
Completely agree! My parents frequently make reference to us (grown children) in their decision-making and I try to convince them to make decisions for themselves and use their current resources for their current lives, not with the thought of us in the back of their minds all the time. I imagine it’s difficult to break out of the parent-as-provider role, but most well-adjusted grown children would far rather see their parents enjoy the fruits of their labor and live with the freedom they deserve after sacrificing so much during our childhood.
Also, Diane is an adult and can make her own decisions, she doesn't need Internet people trying to tell her what to do 🙃
You can always get your family members a hotel room for family gatherings, which is always the most comfortable. Their own space, their own bathroom...
Yes. And maybe the adult children could take turns hosting family gatherings!

Big moves can be fun, and hard. We downsized from 2000 sf to 950! It was a big adjustment, but we got creative with storage solutions. We are seriously downsizing again because we are in our "Youth of our Senior Years" - Our lives are made up of 3rds. 1 - 30 (Youth), 31-59 (Middle Age) 60-90 (old age) - those thirds are divided again... i.e. 60 - 70, the youth of your senior years... 71 - 80 (middle age of your senior years), and 81 - 90 is your senior years of your senior years. You are now in your "senior years, of middle age" - it is a very freeing, yet a bit scary... Happy Birthday Diane! Marlene in Canada.
Love the way you have divided your senior years! Hubby and I are in the same age bracket as you! Have some big decisions to make about what our next season of life will look like! But, we're optimistic and eager to make plans for whatever that might be!😎🇺🇸

Our home of 32 years is 1,400 square feet, so it was easy to decide just to stay put. And now our grandchildren get to spend nights in their parent’s old bedrooms, which is special for us all. We love our deep roots, but I understand why others may want to escape the responsibilities of home ownership. Enjoy the adventure!

Totally with you Diane. I am 10 years older than you but running a successful business from the huge historic house which we have loved for over 20 years. But - it is largely empty of clobber, although colourful and personal, and we enjoy the space and the dimensions of our beautiful home. We will move when we need to but that is not quite yet.
I have been a minimalist for as long as I can remember but one can always have less. To be a minimalist frees the mind to enjoy the important things: family, fulfilling work, enjoying life.
Enjoy your move, one should always move before one has to / is forced to.

Hello, Diane! What a great adventure! I decluttered our 4000 square foot home, when I sold my home of 33 years. I moved into a 2200 square foot patio home. I got rid of over half my DD husband's and my things. I got rid of 2 beds, 4 sofas, a big oak table and chairs, and 4 sets of family china! Half a to of documents, and many books, Hummels, etc. What helped me get going was having a family member spend a couple of hours going through things with me once in a while. You're already on your way! Looking forward to this journey with you!🎉❤😘🩷
My husband and I recently moved out of our 40+ year suburban home and moved out to the country. We downsized the square footage of the home but upsized the property to 5 acres. Less time cleaning, more time outdoors! We’ve now got a huge garden, some apple trees and chickens - we love it! I say go where your heart and the good Lord leads you, and you’ll find happiness and contentment! Looking forward to following you on the next phase of your journey.

My husband and I sold our suburban home of 20 years and moved to the city(chicago) in 2017. Over the next 3 1/2 years we moved 4 times for all different apartment reasons. Every time we moved more things were decluttered. We had so much fun in the city until the pandemic. Living in a rental felt unsettling to me. Last year we bought a house in a walkable suburb west of the city. I am very aware of the increase in space but also determined not to just fill it. It’s really exciting to try new things and it’s also exciting to feel like you are home. Thanks for all the motivation and happy birthday!
It's very exciting Diane. We did a similar thing after 34 years of marriage. I never regretted our decision. I made another big decision in 2020 to let go of our apartment in Wales. Although I miss my darling husband Spyros very much since he passed away in 2023, I don't regret simplifying my life. I did go a bit mad with giving most of our possessions in Wales away but glad we were able to bless others with things they wanted and needed. Happy Birthday! The things you talk about really resonate with people who are looking to the next stages in life. After vacation time it's back to decluttering again. So many things taking up space that we really haven't used in 10 years. Some of them were gifts, but they aren't adding any value. One tip about using plastic boxes as you prepare to move: they can shatter. Maybe not so risky if you are taking the boxes in a car yourself.... but we were told not to use them and some did shatter in a long haul move. Safe travels!

Many years ago I lived in a beautiful apartment near the town centre but I really missed an outside space even to drink my early morning coffee. Having built a new house during the pandemic, I declutterred so so much to he extent that my new home looked empty and almost soulless but I think I’m finding the right balance now. Good luck.

I am looking forward to decluttering alongside of you. While I am not at the same stage as you, I lost my husband to cancer about 8 years ago (when he was 45 years old). I am now ready to make the house we shared, my home. Moving forward in my own new chapter. Onward!

I’m excited to follow and join in with your turbo-charged decluttering journey! We live in a large house that I’ve been careful not to overfill but, like you, I’m conscious that at some point in the future (fairly distant for us but closer than it used to be 😂) we’ll down-size too. I figure it’ll be kinder to us to routinely review and clear items gradually rather than be faced with a nightmare in the end 💐

Happy Belated Birthday! We are nearly birthday twins, 1 year apart. I turned 58 on June 20. Looking forward to following your excitement and planning for your next phase! And it's a good kick-in-the-pants reminder to me that I need to reboot my own decluttering. I'd made a lot of progress, then had this pesky cancer diagnosis and my whole routine fell apart for awhile. But no worries, it was VERY early stage, and I am one year post-successful-treatment already. I had my first of 2x/yearly scans to check for recurrence this month (NONE! Woo hoo!), and I'm so ready to find my way back to NORMAL. Thank you for always being a bright light here for us! You are a gem. 🥰

Happy birthday! Enjoy your visit with your mom and your trip to Korea. My house is just under 1,000 sq. ft. and all one floor so it is a perfect home for me to retire to. Even so, I am "downsizing" my household items. Because I have had to clean out a few family homes over the last 5 years, I decided to practice "Swedish death cleaning" habits so my son doesn't have to deal with the stuff. LOL

I sold the house a month ago, but have a long exit strategy due to having some aged pets. We are not moving but are completely redecorating (paint, flooring, furniture, fixtures, etc.) the house we have had for 11 years. It is exciting and scary. Packing up a lot of items to get out of the way, decluttering, and lots of decisions.

🎉🎉🎉 Three years ago I was in the same exact boat. I spent several months ruthlessly decluttering to prepare for a downsize. And that made it possible for us to make an offer immediately when the right place became available. The moving process was SO EASY because things were easy to pack and move and I didn’t have too much for the much smaller new place.

How exciting for you! I’ve been working on my house for years now in hopes of being able to move somewhere completely different once my youngest finishes school. It’s amazing how much you accumulate while running a household. All the items you keep ‘just in case’ or for using maybe once or twice a year. Our youngest is 19 and he decided to live at home and go to college locally (Michigan, USA). My hubby is disabled so it's nice to have my son here with us. I personally have been getting excited to take my daughter's room to use as a guest room/office and even a quiet reading place. Her move has me thinking about decluttering all the extra bedding as I set up a guest room.

I really admire these qualities and I really admire you too. You've built a beautiful life for yourself! I am putting myself in your shoes right now, and I can feel how you must be feeling right now, as you mentioned, from Scotland to Luxembourg in the European Court of Justice, meeting your husband there, moving to Denmark, starting a family together, buying a house, making it a home, and now, your kids becoming independent and flying from the nest, and you too moving into another phase of life. It will be a great adventure. Last year, we sold our home in CA and moved across the country to a FL city we’d never been to, to rent a house based solely on photos. We’ve since bought. Best life decision and we’re both very happy.

Inspiration as always. I went and got a new library card last week. I used to use the library before I moved because the van came around the valley so I didn’t really have to make an effort. I’m gradually getting rid of tools and things from my studio that I don’t really use now. A friend is buying my big kiln next month and that’ll create a great space. There are lots of tools to sell too that I wouldn’t want to take when we move. I’m grateful for your inspiration and encouragement. I’m planning to clear and clean over the next two years so when I reach my big 7 0 it will be easy to move forward (hopefully somewhere without stairs)

Looking forward to seeing your journey. As well as following your advice on Zone cleaning and decluttering, the best most effective advice has been to declutter as if we are moving 'If you won't move it to another house.....you don't need it'. We may or may not move.......but it's empowering to know that it would be less onerous if we do.
The other best strategy is to get 100% everything out of a room. We got everything out of our shed the other week to sort it out in the garage. We managed to rehouse everything we needed into the garage, got rid of the rest and saved £££ replacing the shed as we realised we don't need one. We did the same under the stairs and now it's so much easier.

How exciting for you and this next season of your life! We had the exact same feeling when we downsized from 5,000 to 2,800 square feet. We ended up with a huge garage full of stuff. We made up our minds that this stuff was NOT going to clutter up our beautiful new home. So, we hired someone, and she and I worked five days a week for five weeks just decluttering the garage. When we were done, 99% of it was gone. Now, our house has some areas - like the top shelves in cabinets - that have nothing on them. We LOVE that.

I am so proud of you for going this next step and going further into the decluttering process. Our family has lived pretty minimal for the past years, but whenever we go see my parents or the in-laws, who still live in the houses, we grew up in, we see the mountains of stuff that have collected over the past almost 30 years and we dread the day, we as their children will have to declutter everything. I have been slowly starting in my parent's house, but it is a long road...

We will be complete empty nesters by the end of summer when our recent college graduate moves into an apartment with some friends. Although we have a 4bedroom home and will eventually downsize it won’t be for several years as the area we want to move to would be further away from our current jobs. However we will take the opportunity to do some major decluttering when our son moves out and work on small projects in the coming years for an eventual sale. So very happy for you. We moved to our summer cabin 7 yrs ago (still working full time) downsized so much and it is so lovely. Even with our small space it is amazing how much I’m still able to declutter 😊

We moved a year and a half ago from our home to a small apartment. It wasn’t until we had moved that I found UA-cam channels about declutterring. The move was stressful, but now, I am so happy we downsized! I am finally finding things that I haven’t seen in years. I am letting go of so much and enjoying more of what I plan to keep. I found that doing this stage of life was exhilarating, as you are projecting here. It made me smile and feel so good about where we ended up--hah, now 12 years ago! Very few things made the final cut in our new place; they simply didn't fit, so were de-cluttered. Glad to see you enjoying it all; it's a wonderful time!
