No need for patches, this should be introduced as field only kit and not authorized in garrison. So you say it makes no crunchy noises, does it make any typical swish noises when rubbed together like Gortex? Also how does it shine when wet?
In recce we never wore rain gear unless we were static for a long time.
Downside to rain gear when operating is breathability, you have a tendency to overheat and usually the rain coat will give you away because of the reflectiveness or sound.
This definitely looks like a better field product than anything we ever had. 👍👍
Anything light you can shove into a small pouch is a win. All rain gear the CAF have is garrison gear or for static positions, not really designed for the ground pounder.
    Cheers

Hi, so nothing has changed since the early sixties? We did clothing trials when I was with the Brit Paras and the kit was disastrous in the field. Too much theory over practical, smocks had insufficient underarm and shoulder construction so that when in a parachute harness you could not reach your chute risers. As you mentioned, clothing noise and reflection, inability to breath out moisture etc etc etc. In New Zealand the Defence Ministry in the seventies asked the advice of the hunter and tramping organisations and we finally got clothing fit for purpose. For 20 years of soldiering I have had to accept crap that was issued. After leaving the Army I kited myself up for hunting and back country fishing and have progressively got better gear. Just as well, at 84 I feel that I deserve it. Cheers mate. Harera

What looks to be a grey like texture in their version stands out quite a lot. Extremely noticeable tbh. If they'd change that up I'd deff buy it.

hmmm CADPAT clones don't use the same disruptive pattern since it's pattern is owned by hyperstealth I believe. So by nature this item has no backing to it's camouflaged capabilities at night. It sure looks the part during the day but if I'm buying my own kit I'd want it to be branded as being CADPAT and certified as such.

It's a balance between the two. You can either have it breath but not be as waterproof or you can have it be waterproof but not breath great. You can't have it all.

An absorbint layer underneath or something to create offset between you & jacket. Easier some times of the year than others. I find the uniform shirts makes this harder.

@@Punisher9419 The perpetual 'smock vs rain jacket' debate. Before retiring in 2018, the rain jacket was my principal outerwear. However, care was needed as over-heating was common and unless sedentary, the wearer becomes drenched in sweat. I was lucky to nab a Drop Zone smock. Unfortunately, it was too late in my time and I was out of a rifle coy by then. I wanted to use it more frequently, but couldn't justify lugging around both garments. Being on the West Coast in the end meant the rain coat usually won out. I was too cheap to buy a stealth jacket.

@@Daeva23 Same here. Goretex sucks unless it is -7 celcius or colder and gets more breathable the colder it gets outside. I too like it for an outer wind breaker up to about -20 celcius it allows much thinner inner insulation layers because its so good at blocking wind

They should make something like this but for pants, the standard issued one is too warm. It would he very handy for goretex boots and also when you have to sit your ass in a swamp for the ORV.

The biggest question does the Softie still fit under it?

  • @groundcontrol5365
    @groundcontrol5365 Рік тому

Is it just made out of nylon or does it have a membrane?
I prefer non rainproof smocks for general use because it barely rains in 90% of Canada. Even in hot locations like South America i have been in heavy heavy rain for 4 hours straight, got soaked, and wasn't that bad. Dried out in a few hours after it stopped. Was more comfortable than being hot under a rain jacket AND wet from sweat.
Rain gear is almost always the wrong choice. A poncho usually does the trick for the 30 minutes of heavy rain a few times a year.
The only time i like goretex is when it is -7celcius or colder and it blocks wind allowing a much thinner insulation layer. Goretex also breathes better the colder it gets outside.

I'm not a big fan of the waterproof zippers in lieu of a regular oversized YKK zipper with a storm flap. The waterproof zippers tend to delaminate after a season or two of use and don't operate as smoothly in icy conditions.
That being said, the Tempest does look like a lighter weight, more compact and more affordable option to an ECWS parka.
