Colourpop calling themselves the “fast fashion” of makeup brands, doesn’t leave a good taste in my mouth. I feel like there are so many issues with fast fashion regarding the environment and treatment of their workers, that then makes me question the environmental impact of faster makeup launches.
Not to mention, if they’re going to go with fast as their business model, you’d think their shipping wouldn’t be so incredibly slow… You get your order and there have been two-four new releases since then!
I think the ColourPop worked well for old-school Beauty YoutTube when everyone was flexing overconsumption -- think Beauty room tours and giant PR unboxings. In the past few years, I think it's become trendier to be a conscious consumer and have more consideration for the environment (which is great!). Now, I think people are a little grossed out to see a giant PR box with a tv screen that you can't recycle. I think if ColourPop wants to remain relevant, they should focus on better quality, eco-conscious packing and formulas and give releases time to breathe. Otherwise, I don't think they will have the lifespan of something like L'oreal or Too Faced.
I have boycotted ColourPop because of their stupid long delivery time. I can get a shipment from overseas faster than I can from ColourPop. I enjoy their products but they're not the only makeup company in town. If they have everything on site there's absolutely no reason orders should take close to 2 weeks
@@monicamcdonald5474 unless you aren’t in the US and it still says shipping is 2-3 weeks (more like 4-5 weeks, have gotten multiple doubles/refunds because of that as they use the same shipping as other companies, haven’t done that with colorpop yet as I’ve only ordered from them once a year ago and had forgotten about my order by the time it arrived)
I like some of Colourpop's products but I despise the constant cycle of discontinuing and rapidly launching new products to replace them, as well as influencing other brands to imitate that fast fashion business model. I don't own tons of makeup nor do I collect or hoard makeup. I don't follow trends. I know what looks good on me and what works. I like to have staples in my collection that I can rely on and repurchase versus always looking for something shiny, new and better, i.e the neverending quest for a holy grail product. It's partially why the majority of my collection is mid to high-end products. Makeup lasts me months, even years, and that is with daily use. I'd rather invest in a few high quality items rather than constantly buying drugstore makeup in an attempt to dupe high end, thus spending more over time. I actually save money buying high end makeup because I am more conscious about what I'm purchasing and tend to buy less often.
It's too fast for even the collectors. I cannot get the things I want at all because they come out, sell out and discontinue so fast and now their prices are going up as well. I gave up trying to collect special things from them. I don't want to only be able to get one or two pieces from a collection.
I also prefer to have staple products versus following fast trends. Some of my favorite foundation has been from Este Lauder and Clinique. Not trendy brands at all, but I can get a spot on color match for my skin with both. I'm always willing to invest in a good foundation and a neutral eyeshadow palette. I think people forget, they don't need to follow trends all the time. I've also learned to buy things like mascara from the drugstore because it needs to be replaced every 6 months.
agree so much about colourpop! Just please take your time bc some releases are so well thought out and then there’s some I think they just release as if they are forced to release stuff each week. Altho (and this has to do with not wearing makeup on the daily/ my personal budget/comfort of spending) is that I usually purchase more drugstore- mid range. I don’t think price dictates quality and I think you can buy more affordable but still be mindful of what you are spending. I definitely take my time when buying so Itry not to impulse buy and and look up reviews while some drugstore can be hit or miss I think there is some great brands out there that I don’t understand why people equate a high price point to guaranteed quality.
I just can't stand that I can't rely on them to restock items. I hate when my favorite products get discontinued. I like to find my holy grails and stick with them, but you can never rely on ColourPop to restock anything. (And I do think they sacrifice quality over quantity most of the time.)
That’s my biggest issue with Colourpop. They never seem to bring back my favorite lip shades. And their makeup seems to expire more quickly than a lot of other brands, so you get even less use out of the products
SO TRUE! I absolutely loved the ultra blotted and ultra matte liquid lipsticks but colour selection is so limited now with other newer formulas which I find inferior. I'd see new products so hyped that its long lasting and moisturizing which is anything but when i try it >.
@@ari5200 glad i'm not the only one! my HG shade was ojai there but that was discontinued. Sad. Do you notice that their lip shades rarely have the warm red/orange-ish undertone?
I feel like since Colourpop releases so much that I can easily pass on 90% of them but they’re still bound to catch my attention 10% of the time- and everyone else’s, just a different 10%. Like if you throw enough darts one is bound to hit now and then or whatever the saying is
Totally agree with ya there! I do think unfortunately their formula has seemed to change. From their palettes I got just like 6 months to a year ago compared to a palette I got a few months ago, the formula seems different. I’ve talked to other people that say the same. But, then again, they do have some they release that still seem to be the good formula. The thing I liked about colourpop was even though they seemed to release soooo much and never be able to restock items, they kept their formula consistent. But, unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore!
I can easily pass on 90 percent of it because it’s warm toned. They are neglecting us cool toned people who can’t wear warm tones. I am a deep winter so I am Cool. Warn tones turn orange on me and I look jaundice in them. Of course they come out with a cool toned palette that sells out in minutes because it’s twilight uh I want it because it’s cool toned
I think part of the failure to restock is an attempt to create scarcity and encourage customers to buy as opposed to waiting because if you wait too long, what you want will be gone.
Cutting off their nose to spite their faces or throwing the baby out with the bathwater so to speak ... people are losing interest ... I for one have completely stopped purchasing for this exact reason and I hear a lot of people saying the same as me.
I honestly love CP. They offer good quality (with some inconsistencies) at a very affordable price. I mostly but through Ulta. I don't feel the need to buy everything. Yes, they dupe themselves, but I only buy what suits my collection, and I think the overlap in some cases works. There are only so many neutrals anyone can make, and some in each palette are needed. Different combos will appeal to different people.
My exact same opinion I always wait for the bigger collections like the collab collections from specific movies that I love from my childhood that’s collections I’m really interested and invested in with Colourpop cuz they always know the assignments of luxury or collab packaging on point, affordable prices, good quality, cruelty free and vegan, versatile & unique products and different formulas that never have been done etc. that’s why I love Colourpop they’re the first ever affordable makeup brand where everything has worked on my skin from foundation & concealer to setting powder, bronzer, blushes, highlighters, brow products, eyeshadows, eyeliners, mascaras, false lashes, lipsticks, lipglosses, lip tints & lip stains etc. to finally even skin care and I’ve never had that with a makeup brand that everything was worked on my skin I’m normal to dry combination skin and I’m very impressed with Colourpop but I only look out for stuff or color stories that really interests me at this point
I’m going to agree with you about how I like colourpop and I personally wait to have a bunch of stuff I want to order from them(since I don’t have access to ilya) altho I really agree with the criticism and wish they had less frequent and more thoughtful releases sometimes because it makes them less interesting to see them repeating themselves
@@koiwood Definitely a lot of brands don’t you that option or only release eyeshadow palettes only and then shades that have been done before like Urban Decay or Too Faced they only bring out eyeshadow palettes nothing more while Colourpop releases also other stuff within an collection I feel Urban Decay & Too Faced are going to be bankrupt very soon if they continue like that and don’t switch it up I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re leaving the makeup industry
colourpop isnt any more affordable than other better quality brands. It just portions its products to make them look more affordable, but youre getting less with shit quality for more cost, with enormous pressure to buy this or that limited release
I'm from the UK so buying from Colourpop means hefty shipping and customs costs so I've never purchased from them. I'm surprised they haven't expanded into other countries as I think they'd be very popular here
Same here. I have thought about buying as I love the idea of building a palette with just the shades I like, but the customs fees etc just put me off. I got stung ordering Melt before it was available via some of the UK beauty web sites.
There is no hefty shipping? It’s free over $60 and the tax is included at checkout so you don’t have any customs fees. I am in the UK and have bought from them loads of times.
Same here. Shipping isn't the issue, it's costums and it will take a while (which is good because it reduces impulse buying I think, if you have to ask yourself will I still be excited about this when it arrives in 2- 3 weeks?). I generally only buy when they are on 30% sale, then the 30% about add up to the costums. So I basically pay the regular colourpop price then. They are not worth more than that LOL I think they could have a European warehouse but they wouldn't be as quick with their releases there. They would be 2-3 weeks behind because of shipping etc. Also the prices would have to be higher but I still think they would do decently good. Idk if it wouldn't even be profitable for them to build a factory that does the same thing like the US one somewhere else
I love the super shocks and their glitters and the fact that they are so affordable. I do wish they kept some staples in a collection, but it is definitely my favorite eyeshadow brand.
for me personally, unless it's a super exciting collab, I have stopped purchasing anything from them at full price. I usually just wait until they have a good sale and then I may or may not place an order. This also allows me to take a step back and see if I really want something after the initial hype around it has faded.
I’ve only purchased One item of them but through Amazon. I literally have a countdown timer to their sale so I can make a big full order 😂 Cuz I ain’t paying full price
I like ColourPop, but I don't have the need or inclination to buy everything they launch. I can see how it can be frustrating to reviewers and retailers, but I just see the constant "new" as a benefit because there's always a color story I'm interested in if I want to buy from them.
I do love color pop because they list all of their ingredients on the website, which is helpful with all my allergies. They are largely gluten free too. On a teacher budget, i can actually afford them, but I’m working to be a more conscious consumer
I love the quality of colourpop products, especially their eyeshadows and brushes. As a matter of fact, I own 2 sets of brushes, you just have to make sure you do not get duplicates. I love their super shock shadows! Usually I follow Amanda from makeup for fun because she does a comparison when a new palette comes out, just to make sure I don’t all ready own a palette with the same colors
Idk if this brand has fallen, because they still put great formulas in their products and their eyeshadows are both pigmented and easy to blend. The color stories are also versatile.
Seed is such a clever name for a brand incubator company. Especially with Kelly talking about brands "popping up" Or maybe playing in my flower beds all weekend has my mind on a one way track. Good one Kelly 👍👏👌
I work as shipper for CP under the seed beauty name here in Oxnard and I can agree that it’s definitely not the same as it once was. We went from 50k orders a day to a fraction of that now! I also agree with the constant launches
I love Colourpop! A great value for an amazing formula. I don't buy everything they produce, but I can be sure when I buy, I'm getting a much better deal than high-end. I believe for that reason they will remain relevant.
Yea I regret many of the purchases I made with colourpop. I used to wanna buy everything but now I’m like nah…they’ll make a dupe of their own product soon enough I don’t need that. If they were more readily available at target or Walmart that would def change my mind. But spending $30 to get free shipping every time is not for me either
The shipping costs, plus no returns no matter the issue? Those are my beefs. If Target had them, and not just the limited products that Ulta has, I would be more interested. Also, I really do hate the ratio of glitters/shimmers to mattes in so many of their palettes. 3-4 outta 9 is plenty, kwim?
But you guys ,shipping isnt free .brands shockingly suck it up and pay for thousands of dollars of shipping .not all companies can be like amazon. Its shocking to me that people forget that
@@balayagesalon Just happened to be on when you commented. It’s (for me) not about the shipping costs in and of themselves,it’s that I must pay extra on shipping for something I’ve only viewed online, PLUS the no return policy. I don’t mind paying for shipping. I do mind paying for the product plus shipping when I’m gambling on something that might not be how it was represented online. I think they do themselves a disservice by not being more readily available in brick and mortar retail spaces. Which I think is absolutely a decision they choose. I’ve no doubt Target or CVS would jump at the chance of carrying such a popular brand. As is, I have bought and enjoyed a few Colourpop items, but strictly at Ulta, where the stock is super limited, but I can view the colors to ensure I’m not buying what won’t work for me, and I can return it if there is an issue.
@@balayagesalon I am not asking for free shipping. I just don’t have a desire to pay for shipping or spend $30 worth of products to get Free shipping if I really only want one thing
I feel the same about sigma bc I don’t wanna spend $75 to get free shipping and I don’t wanna pay $8 for shipping for one item. Now that they’re sold at target I’m more likely to purchase them there instead
I’ve always liked Colourpop, I even did my marketing final on the company back in 2018. I just don’t like how they are duping themselves and that pricing has gone up and quality is not as consistent (imo) as it used to be - also I dislike that they market themselves are a cruelty free brand when some products contain animal byproducts. For a brand that has colour in their brand name, they just seemed to have stopped creating colorful products which is what I loved about the products when I first learned about the brand. Also, I think they need to slow down with releases.
@@MyCleverHandle By animal by-products I meant the risk of cross contamination with ingredients such as Carmine. I don't know the correct term for this kind of ingredient, but they place warnings on the packages and not always on the palette. Have contacted Colourpop support about this and they said that they mention it with ingredients for pigment shades, which is why I try not to use those shadows because of staining and the chance of having an allergic reaction. I always check the ingredient list just in case. As for cornstarch and corn silk, those are not considered made from animals but most livestock in the US is fed feed with corn.
I fully agree with you, Kelly. My issue with Colourpop is that if they do an Anime Series like Sailor Moon then I want all the Sailor Scouts. Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus because Sailor Moon might not be their favorite Character. How many of us Learned the Planets from Sailor Moon? I also WISH they would do more Anime Related Makeup as well, because Magical Doremi was a popular one and also something is right up their ally. This also got me thinking of when the Carron Cakes came out and how quickly they sold out as well. It was more complex in restocking them because they were doing a different tech in spinning the yarn as well.
Ugh, I agree, the Sailor Moon collection imo was incredibly underwhelming and idk I don't trust them to give an anime collection the kind of magic and appreciation it deserves.
I used to be such a CP stan. There was a time a couple years after they launched when I would get every launch. I was obsessed with them because I felt like their formulas were so innovative and such good quality and price. Now rather than focusing on new innovative formulas they way they used to it’s just a bunch of eyeshadow pallets that I don’t need. And I hate the fast fashion mindset. They’ve always launched quickly but they’ve really amped it up the past few years and it feels like just a million boring launches.
ColourPop needs more innovative colors and formulations. I've stopped buying so much color pop and have switched to multi-chromes and duochromes which CP doesn't really make.
I‘m from Germany which means high taxes when I order from colourpop 😩 but I love the brand so much! As a minimalist I only buy staples and I challenged myself now to finish everything before ordering again. Plus I hope they finally open a store here in Germany or at Sephora/Douglas😍
I never bought any color pop products until recently lmao I just got my first product a couple months ago. I’ve always hated their business model but I’m shocked by how good their formulas are, they are good for staple products but I have no desire to keep up with every new launch
i’m so glad that you made this video. colourpop has definitely lost my attention because of the amount of products that they release soooo often. i will admit that they have some solid releases but their repetition drives me insane. i can’t wait for drugstore fridays!!! you look absolutely beautiful. 💖💖💖
Colourpop being created by people from business instead of makeup backgrounds makes a lot of sense if you think about the products that they release. They seem more focused on what's trendy, or filling the needs/requests of what people want instead of creating new trends or making new products that are really innovative and artistic.
I’d be so curious for Smashbox, I feel that is one that is v under the radar, at least in the online community. Also TOTALLY feel the heat situation here in Boston. I’m either melting or freezing.
I would love it if Colourpop did more collars with TV shows like Gilmore Girls or Outlander or Bridgerton. Looking at their previous work I know they would do a great job.
I fell down the colourpop hole in 2020 when we were all stuck at home. Lol. I have a few palettes , supershocks, some lippies. I have the 3 neutral mega palette. That said, even I get burn out from their releases. Hahahahaha. Love this series.
I used to LOVE colourpop, but in the last year I feel like they abandoned their quality originals and started to focus more on branded and gimmicky launches (which isn't bad, but their prices went up while their quality went down)
I wait for Colourpop to have their end of year sale and if there's something I've had my eye on and have checked back for it a lot, I will buy it during the sale. That's how I knew I wanted the Stone Cold Fox and Bare Necessity palettes
I have a really small collection and only buy makeup twice a year. I still love following all of Colourpops launches! It doesn't tempt me to spend money on the brand, if I like something I put it on my wishlist and just that action satisfies me lol. I really love their aestethic and I think almost everything they launch is pretty! I just don't wanna own it 🤣
I think that they used influencers to promote their products really well, and I think that was the key to their success! Makeup Geek just closed, and I think that although I love Marlena, but the whole drama of her not wanting to pay influencers to promote her makeup was a big mistake and then people stopped talking about Makeup Geek! This really hurt her business. Colourpop sends out lots of promotion to many influencers. I am not sure if they pay huge influencer because it seems a lot of mid-tier creators are the ones promoting their brand.
I absolutely agree , also feel bad for MG becs just pushing via influencers shouldn't determine the future of such a good brand. I'm sure that's a huge cost (even if it means sending free cosmetic items)
What I find interesting about colourpop is there isn’t a face to the brand. There’s no expert, no defining style or image mirroring a person. They do follow ‘themes’ of releases but it’s a huge variety of themes.
Colourpop & Elf are my 2 favorite brands. Great quality, great prices. My faves are the Colourpop eyeshadow palettes & the Supershock products. Why pay more when these products are so good?
I'm still interested in Colourpop, but my interest has continued to climb like it had been the last few years. So still excited but I've evened out a bit. Skin looking on point, really like this blush placement on you :)
Colourpop is also really unsustainable with all of its plastic packaging. The amount of waste they produce is staggering, when they release collection upon collection.
I'm so glad I found this video! I used to in love with Colourpop because of all the rave but now I hardly even browse their website. The ONLY things I ever really want from them are their super shock shadows, since I'm more of a cream and liquid eyeshadow gal, and colored liquid liners. But even their super shocks have gotten boring because its mostly just neutral glittery toppers. I'm sick of neutrals and I want more color. I was very young when they were made and growing but if they just go back to their roots and resell their bestsellers while actually keeping them in stock, their sales would skyrocket more since its clear they want money. AND THE FAST BEAUTY OMG they're ruining our environment because of the constant launches. I always hated the plastic packaging because of how difficult it was to work with AND because its bad for the earth. If they go a more eco-friendly route they'd definetly be respected more. The cardboard packaging of the eyeshadow palettes is so much better anyways as its eco-friendly, easier to work with and prettier.
Love this series, and I remember when CP was new and exciting and had collabs with Kathleen Lights and other youtubers and Hello Kitty! Their launches really did seem to go into hyperdrive at one point and that is when they lost me. I still enjoy seeing what they put out; however I’m a lot more selective now because they do release and then it’s gone.
I am excited about this video. I've never been a fan of colourpop. I know I'm in the minority. I liked their single shadows back in the day. For me though...the fall out on my face and the thin formula of the shimmers is a huge deal breaker.
Same!! I’ve tried a few of the palettes and they just are too inconsistent that I gave up. I’d rather purchase more expensive products that I know will most likely be better quality.
@@tinyprettymoon a slur against Asian people? Juvia’s Place had that controversy recently, they issued an apology after they pulled video from their social channels. Never heard about Colourpop having that issue. When did that happen?
I really like when YTers like Amanda do comparisons to show how very similar the color stories are between palettes. The new stuff becomes less tempting then! And lets talk about the slow shipping times. By the time I receive my box, I've forgotten what I've ordered!
I generally look at the new launches but don't purchase. Usually when I do order from them, it's because I'm getting skincare from Fourth Ray and throw in a couple makeup products too.
I still buy Colourpop, they get me with the collabs especially Disney and Star Wars. I have to talk myself out of certain collections since I don't need everything. But they do have one of my favorite eyeshadow formulas, and I love the pretty fresh concealer.
I'm the opposite, I don't care about the collabs but I do own some because I've loved the color story of some of palettes, e.g. the Star Wars palette. I agree with you on every other point though. I'm not buying makeup to collect it and I thought that would be a problem with Colourpop but I've adjusted my expectations. Eyeshadow lasts forever for me so I don't care about restocks. I wouldn't buy concealer or foundation from them but everything else? Sure.
Such an interesting back story, love this series Kelly! I feel like the fact they started Colourpop in only 12 weeks is very much a testament to how quickly they launch products now!!
This was a good video, Kelly. I first learned of Colourpop when they released their first Disney Princess collab. I really liked their Fame and Double Entendre palette. I find palettes that I’ve gotten from them in the last 2 years seem different in quality. The shimmers have so much fallout for me and they aren’t as pigmented when I use a brush. I still like to see what Colourpop comes out with, especially their mega palettes. I’m always hoping they’ll eventually release one with colors I like so I can use them as single shadows and create my own small quads or palettes.
ColourPop was my absolute favorite brand for a good while, but they've been getting on my nerves in the last couple of years. When I first tried them in 2017ish, they had tons of options for funky colors in eye *and* lip products, which I loved. I have a periwinkle lipstick from them that's so unique! I did their "build your own palette" thing a couple of times to create fun, no-neutrals-allowed combinations and have some straight-up neon Supershocks. The era of monochromatic nine-pans was great. Then they started releasing more and more neutral shadows, discontinuing all the weird lip colors, neglecting their BYOP singles, phasing out the colorful singles and SSS, giving each new launch essentially the same two blush shades, and releasing the same tired neutral palettes with tiny variations. Also it actually pisses me off that in their Pretty Fresh line, they either have barely any cool-toned shades or straight-up NO cool-toned shades. What possible reason is there for making lots of warm and neutral shades and then giving those of us with cool undertones either a shrug and a "lol sucks to be you" or just a sprinkling of shade options? I know some booty gurus like to use warm foundations even when they clearly have pink undertones but I prefer to actually match my skin, thanks. I do still follow their launches and buy stuff from them occasionally. The customer service horror stories and intentional scarcity bother me a lot and make me not want to order much, though. I don't want to have to buy a new item as soon as it releases to have any chance of getting it, like those adorable heart-shaped blushes. And if I love a product, I want to be able to recommend it to a friend without having to double-check that it still exists on their website! Ugh. >:( Anyway, this was a great video! I hope you're staying warm and comfy over there, haha.
Such an interesting video, thank you! I do agree that they release way to much, but I do also agree that they make something that is going to appeal to different parts of there consumers each time. So I take there releases in stride. I'm not on yt so old or new doesn't matter. I am always interested to see what each release is going to be, then I decided if its something I want and if yes do if want it now or am I ok with waiting until I want to do a larger cp order. There skincare line does have a staple for me which is the skin milks. So if I don't want the new release right away I'll wait till I run of skincare and if I still want it I'll get it.
What a good idea! I love this series and I hope you keep it going. I’m interested in brands that go from the original developers to becoming big name brands then are sold to a large beauty conglomerate. Philosophy is a good example; their OG products and formulations were changed and disappointed loyal customers.
I really like Colourpop, but I have sone issues. My biggest one is the inconsistency with their vegan offerings. They are perfectly capable if making any color/color story in any product vegan. They’ve made plenty of reds, purple, and pinks, the traditionally carmine utilizing colors perfectly well without it. But it’s a gamble each time as to whether it will be vegan or not. You can look at a preview and think: that looks like it should be vegan, and it won’t be, or the opposite. It’s incredibly frustrating. (example: the NBA collab: the greens/neutral Celtics and the blue/grey Maverick’s palette weren’t vegan, but the purple/yellow Lakers and the red/white Bulls palettes were. What?!) People don’t refuse to buy vegan products, (I don’t think) but vegans will not buy non-vegan. So why cut off part of your customer base haphazardly when you could just stick to vegan? It’s lost money. The second isn’t necessarily the duping or the speedy releases for me, but the frequent discontinuing and unavailability of shades. With their ability to create so much so fast, they also have the ability to keep things in stock should they choose, very easily even, but they don’t. Only exception would maybe be some collabs where there are contracts involved, but otherwise, no excuse. I get the whole fast fashion concept, but how hard would it be to have staple product pages with all shades easily available? You have people clamoring, ready to buy certain products who can’t. That just doesn’t make sense. Again, it’s lost money. Plus, although their customer service is doing better, their shipping is pretty terrible. Like awful…
@@vegforlife Yup…Neutral palettes shouldn’t need carmine unless they’re true reddish browns…. But neutral palettes are rarely vegan and neutral shades in other palettes that should be vegan often sink the whole palette. This has happened at least three times with green palettes that I would have bought AND The Mandelorian palette. 💔😥
Omg their shipping is the worst....the last launch of theirs I bought, I think, was the Lush Life palette and some astrology quads and I honestly almost forgot about them bc it took well over 2 weeks to get to me.
@@katelynnyangweso2961 It really is just horrible. I ordered my Darth Vader palette, and it shipped five days later, but still hasn’t made it to the DHL center. 😑 I’m going to have to contact them because I think it’s lost… SO frustrating! It’s slow to initially ship, then the shipping process is slow, and then the transfer from DHL to USPS adds an extra day or two. It’s insufferable!
@@flutemusic88 that is ridiculous. I ordered stuff from the Kaleidos launch on Valentines Day and just got it today, and that was from China so to be expected to take some time but Jesus, they're in CA!! Also I just think DHL sucks in general.
I liked colourpop when I first started makeup bc I could practice eye looks without spending so much money on pallets and feeling like I couldn’t use expensive pallets bc I was just learning. They have become gimmicky and the quality as gone down. I am disappointed how they seem creative with their collections but they only do the bare minimum. They could do so much more
It looks like they just rearrange all of their colors in different palettes and collections. U especially realize this when u watch a video where a UA-cam does their homework and finds an almost identical color story in an older palette. Haven't bought from them in a while and am actually starting to declutter some of their palettes. U explained this so well! 💖💖
I just purchased a pallet from colourpop for the first time in over probably 6 years. Which made me stumble on your video. I have to compliment you on the amazing research you’ve done in this video. Did you go to school for journalism or marketing? Such a thorough job. I don’t really buy makeup but everything I bought is starting to expire so that’s the only reason I bought something from colourpop. I still follow them on Instagram but never get excited enough to buy anything.
I personally love colourpop. There are a lot of eyeshadow palettes I have and love. Also some lips products and face products. I am a fan, at their prices you can always get something fresh and new.
So agree with you on Colourpop. I get frustrated with all the new launches and it’s overwhelming so I stopped looking at their website and moved on! Yes they did have some great products which I do own but how many palettes can I have in my collection???? Thanks Kelly great series very interesting and great for my college bound daughter who wants to get into marketing!!!
If only Colorpop could learn to pack eyeshadows so they didn’t shatter in transit. Just a little more bubble wrap to make it from Oxnard to Los Angeles. I’m loving this series. 🌸
I love your videos on marketing and business! You do it so intelligently and I feel like it’s something we really in the beauty space, to be more thoughtful about what’s going on around us. I hope that curiosity how the industry works leads to more transparency in regards to workers rights and the environment. When it comes to colorpop their strategy doesn’t really jive with me because it most often takes a long time, like months or years, from when I first hear about a product and become interested to when I buy it, so with colorpop it’s most likely discontinued by then
Yes I agree about the fatigue. Not interested in the newness, but more of quality and what I “need” in my collection. Lately, I’ve been enjoying more from their Fourth Ray line (especially their lip masks, balms, serums) since I have every color imaginable in shadows, blushes, lipsticks, etc.
Such an interesting chat today! I kinda thought it was just me - but I do feel a sense of 'too much' with the Colourpop and other launches sometimes. When you push out so many items all the time, the 'specialness' goes away. And let's face it, there are only so many colors you can create, and people are smart - you take away an old color and replace it with something new, it's not really new. Even if they change the color composition by a percent or 2, the outcome is so close to the old color. I think a lot of this mentality is because we have become such an instant society - with access to things so fast, we think we want a million choices and we want them right this second. But you end up with a sort of burn out feeling and all the new things being thrown at you just feel like oh yeah, here's another one, so what? I'm like you, Kelly, sometimes when there's too much coming out at once, I just don't buy.
I was out of the beauty market for many years and recently returned. ColourPop is still new to me as are many brands. In fact, the only reasons it caught my attention is that it’s cruelty free and the low price point. Charlotte Tilbury, ABH, Natasha Denona are all beyond my price range. I don’t even bother looking at their products or if they’re cruelty free because there’s no point. But ColourPop opened an amazing world of color and texture to me that didn’t exist before. Frankly, it’s more than a little overwhelming. I had never had to deal with pressed pigments or pressed glitters as eyeshadows. My glitters came in pots and the pigments in bottles. The concept of eyeshadows having to be named as something else to get around the FDA is new to me. And the sheer volume! It’s a lot to process. There have also been shifts in color naming. For example, mauve is no longer a greyed purple but a muted red. Taupe isn’t equal parts grey and beige. It’s now a slightly cooled brown, or not cooled at all. And what’s called out as being cool is often neutral or even warm. It’s taking a lot of adjusting especially because many more color families have changed. What color theory always defines as violet is now referred to as blue, blue is often called green, and purple is anything from a red-violet to a lavender. And the names frequently don’t match the colors. For example, in ColourPop’s Stone Cold Fox, they named a brown color “Obsidian” when the most common color for that volcanic glass is black. The name should have been switched with “Rock Bottom,” which would have been appropriate for a dark brown. And I’ve found dozens of such disconnects-not that anyone but me cares. The color is what counts, not their silly naming.
Thanks for this info. You're video popped up in my feed. I've been on the hunt for a new foundation to make a new staple as I started putting makeup on again when I leave the house. I bought a ColourPop foundation and I'm looking for something more permanent.
I used to be so excited for new ColourPop launches but ever since they cranked up their release schedule I've stopped trying to keep up. I still occasionally browse their site and some products still intrigue me, but it is rare that I will place an order. I will say that they do theming and packaging really well which can sometimes be the deciding factor on whether I buy something or not.
I still really like CP. I like their quality, I like their aesthetic and I think they always NAIL packaging. Like, their product design/graphic design team is lit. But the frequency of launches does overwhelm and bore me. I'm not interested in 85% of their launches because the colour stories are extremely repetitive.
My issue with Colourpop was when things would be out of stock for a long time but they were still dropping new releases weekly. How can you brag about creating everything in house yet the staples that customers loved like byop for example was always out of stock?
I recently bought some colorpop pallets for the first time and I love the products! They have really good color pay off and dont flake everywhere. The price point was good and I will purchase from them again in the future when I find something that I like.
I love that colourpop largely does something for everyone and follows the trends or makes them because then I can cheaply also follow them. They have excellent quality makeup at a good price. They're probably my favourite brand
Super interesting!!!! I really loved Colourpop when I first got into makeup but now I feel like their quality isn’t as great as other brands I love… I still get a palette here or there but I don’t love it like I once did :(
I almost exclusively only buy from colourpop now if they drop a pop culture collaboration I love. That way what I buy has value for me as a collector even if I find that the color story is repetitive or unappealing. I do not like the idea of “fast makeup” and “fast fashion” though I am guilty of buying from those brands in the past for the sake of affordability. I really, really hate that they actually strive to be a part of that because it suggests to me a lack of being in touch with the reality of consequences related to fast fashion and that makes me feel icky.
I will only buy Colour Pop at Ulta. I bought a palette on their website which came broken and after numerous attempts to get a replacement failed…I have lost interest. Thank go for the video!!
Wow I have the opposite experience. Ulta ships me a broken palette literally every time I order from them, but I've never had an issue with Colourpop coming damaged since day 1.
I love CP, but I am so over the constant releases, the duping themselves and stuff going on sale 2 weeks after releasing, oh, and the staple things we want neverrrrr being in stock...that said, I still will buy them, I'm just being much more aware of if I really want it or just am attracted to the hype
I used to LOVE Colourpop! Unfortunately they just come out with so much stuff that it’s hard to keep track and is super overwhelming. I still buy from them every now and then but it’s typically only face wipes and sometimes a concealer.
I love doing alt makeup and ColourPop was the brand that helped me build my collection of bright eyeshadows. I love Fourth Ray Beauty as well because their formulas don't irritate my sensitive skin. However, I do get annoyed when things either take forever to restock or never restock at all. I also don't buy as much from them as I used to. I'm not inclined to buy every single launch bc they're not always interesting. And some of the collabs feel like an afterthought. The Darth Vader palette, for example, felt more like someone decided to make a neutral palette and then stick a bright red in so they could use Star Wars packaging. The imagination is slowly dying.
I still love Colourpop and most of their launches. I do love how good they are at creating cohesive collections and that they always have full bundles and several partial bundles - that's a great business strategy. I confess that if I add up the prices of everything I would buy individually and there's something I wasn't going to buy, a bundle might sway me. Like, if all the things I want are 60 bucks but the bundle is 62, why not throw in the extra 2 and get the entire thing? But one thing you didn't touch on was that part of their appeal used to be how inexpensive they were. While still on the affordable side, their prices have jumped. Probably so they can do more sales, but I definitely notice that there's nothing at the 5 dollar mark anymore. Also they did used to restock quickly when something sold out, but not anymore. Now it's months if at all.
I‘ve only tried ONE product from CP ( the og lippie stix , i had 2 or 3 colors ) in 2016 I think and... I’ve never tried anything else cause it’s really expensive to import makeup from the US , i think isn’t worth for me to spend 50% more on Colourpop because taxes ! Those prices aren’t ok for me , it’s supposed to be an affordable brand and for us in the majority of EU deff isn’t ! I’m always waiting for an European store but at this point i’m almost spiteful about their choice to ignore our market , i think isn’t very smart from them anyway !
@@rutealmeida3331 they also made some collection ‘not available’ for EU shipping like the Sailor Moon one , one of my friend was so upset about it after waiting the launch for literal hours ...
I absolutely love Colourpop's products, but they need to slow down a bit. When I first got into makeup I thought I had to buy every palette they released..now I know what I prefer versus just pretty packaging and colors I won't use at all. I got so overwhelmed with their releases that it actually made me run to other brands. I'll still buy from them every once in awhile just nowhere near what I used to buy from CP.
I don't love the fast fashion model but I wish they were making an effort to be more sustainable if they are going to continue with that. Please do makeup revolution and all it's crazy branches next lol. I feel like they have a turn around time similar to colourpop.
I love Colourpop but I just got worn out from every palate having some type of glitter in the palate so it got to where i would pass those glitter pans off to my daughter for her to use for some crafting ideas she had. . I love the gel eyeliners though. Smoothly applies every time.
I still love Colourpop and reach for the palettes I do own quite frequently. That being said, I don't necessarily keep up with their launches, but I try to snag them when I see one I really like.
I like Colourpop as fun makeup, like the recent Limelight release. Their crème gel eyeliners are great and I’m enjoying the jelly much shadows and a few lip products like the lip oils.
I remember colourpop’s ultra matte liquid lipsticks being the first makeup product I got that were my own my stepmom bought me three red lipsticks for my birthday and I wore them every single day so they have a special place in my heart but their launch schedule does not work well with my shopping addiction so I try to stay away from colourpop news for my financial safety
I love this series. It’s fascinating to hear the history of the brands. Im not that into Colourpop anymore. Other than a select few SS shadows, a few brushes and one palette, Ive decluttered all other CP products i ever had. I was usually disappointed in the items when they arrived, so ive just given up on the brand and saved my money.
I'm still a fan of ColourPop. I look forward to new launches, but don't just jump on them without looking at what I already have in my collection. I like the quality of their shadows. I like their lip products as well. And, being 71 and on a fixed income, I really like their price point!
I have 3 CP palettes, 1 super shock eyeshadow, and their foundation in the regular packaging, not the tube, which I enjoy. I’m just very particular about what I buy from them. They really do overwhelm me with all their products. I’m also going 59 and keep my collection very curated and minimal; much more so, the older I get. My focus is more on skincare products, now. Great video👍🏼 My husband is a machinist in Camarillo, Ca., and has made many of the molds for their packaging over the years. So they do outsource some of their production.
Colourpop calling themselves the “fast fashion” of makeup brands, doesn’t leave a good taste in my mouth. I feel like there are so many issues with fast fashion regarding the environment and treatment of their workers, that then makes me question the environmental impact of faster makeup launches.
I agree
Not to mention, if they’re going to go with fast as their business model, you’d think their shipping wouldn’t be so incredibly slow… You get your order and there have been two-four new releases since then!
Yeah, I always thought calling Colourpop the "fast fashion" of makeup was a dig. Fast fashion... is not a good thing lol
@@bustopratbag which is hilarious because their the ones who came up with it
It's always up to the consumer.
Whatever brand, Whatever reason (s), we get to *VOTE with our dollar $$* ❣ 💯 💖
There are still plenty of youtubers that do huge pr unboxing and makeup collection tours
I have boycotted ColourPop because of their stupid long delivery time. I can get a shipment from overseas faster than I can from ColourPop.
I enjoy their products but they're not the only makeup company in town. If they have everything on site there's absolutely no reason orders should take close to 2 weeks
@@monicamcdonald5474 what?? I live in Hawaii and my package came 4 days later.
That's fucking dumb
@@Ash-nk8lk but people dont watch it like they used to
@@monicamcdonald5474 unless you aren’t in the US and it still says shipping is 2-3 weeks (more like 4-5 weeks, have gotten multiple doubles/refunds because of that as they use the same shipping as other companies, haven’t done that with colorpop yet as I’ve only ordered from them once a year ago and had forgotten about my order by the time it arrived)
I definitely take my time when buying so Itry not to impulse buy and and look up reviews while some drugstore can be hit or miss I think there is some great brands out there that I don’t understand why people equate a high price point to guaranteed quality.
even the things that i thought could be in my staple from colourpop have been discontinued and that’s such a hassle! i like reliable supplies.
@@sairvinginthestacks shouldn’t mascara be replaced every 3 months?
I just can't stand that I can't rely on them to restock items. I hate when my favorite products get discontinued. I like to find my holy grails and stick with them, but you can never rely on ColourPop to restock anything. (And I do think they sacrifice quality over quantity most of the time.)
I agree. They are constantly launching new lip formulas while they don’t restock old stuff at all.
@@raincraze I feel u 😭 I love the ultra blotted lip and want to get a backup for the shade halo effect but they discontinued it
@@ari5200 glad i'm not the only one! my HG shade was ojai there but that was discontinued.
@@onewhisper22005yup! The new eyeshadow formula sucks. I like my palettes from years ago way better
I can easily pass on 90 percent of it because it’s warm toned. They are neglecting us cool toned people who can’t wear warm tones. I am a deep winter so I am
Cool.
I agree. I also like that their palettes are magnetic and you can easily pop the pans out and make your own palette/ travel ect.
@@lidyaaandstuff I think it was better ffor Aria wallet to not know this, lol
They are not worth more than that LOL
I think they could have a European warehouse but they wouldn't be as quick with their releases there. They would be 2-3 weeks behind because of shipping etc. Also the prices would have to be higher but I still think they would do decently good. Idk if it wouldn't even be profitable for them to build a factory that does the same thing like the US one somewhere else
Absolutely agree . I'm from England and I thinks so too.
I do the same!
Same, but the sale also has to coincide with me needing to replace/refill base products (tinted moisturizer lol).
Same
Same!
Same!
Me too!
Especially with Kelly talking about brands "popping up"
Or maybe playing in my flower beds all weekend has my mind on a one way track.
Good one Kelly 👍👏👌
see that makes sense
As for cornstarch and corn silk, those are not considered made from animals but most livestock in the US is fed feed with corn.
wdym stopped creating colourful products? every single one of their palettes has non boring, non nude shades
I'm amazed colourpop is this fast and abundant with eyeshadows and we still haven't gotten any single indigo in any of their palettes lol
I love this series. You are so enjoyable to watch and very well spoken.
i’m so glad that you made this video. colourpop has definitely lost my attention because of the amount of products that they release soooo often. i will admit that they have some solid releases but their repetition drives me insane. i can’t wait for drugstore fridays!!! you look absolutely beautiful. 💖💖💖
I still like colourpop. However, I will just wait for a sale and if something is not available that’s fine but I will only buy it on sale.
Ooh good thinking!
I own one palette from smash box their Smokey palette and I love the formula.
I don't know why but I know that Lilly singh did alot with smashboxs and that boosted their popularity. I wanna try them tbh
I would love it if Colourpop did more collars with TV shows like Gilmore Girls or Outlander or Bridgerton. Looking at their previous work I know they would do a great job.
That would be cool!
I just don't wanna own it 🤣
I really enjoy this series of behind this scenes. I’d love to see more about the makeup industry, beyond just the products themselves
Honestly Kelly, I love when you're holding your mug in videos, it feels like I'm sitting down with you at a coffee shop and just chatting 😊
I only just learned about Makeup Geek because it is going out of business. :/
I absolutely agree , also feel bad for MG becs just pushing via influencers shouldn't determine the future of such a good brand. I'm sure that's a huge cost (even if it means sending free cosmetic items)
I haven't heard people talk about makeup geek in a long time and honestly had no idea that it was shutting down.
I do love colourpop. I don't buy everything they launch. I just purchase products I'm interested in.
I kind of still love colourpop. It might not be trending but it's good product at a good price point
Ugh. >:(
Anyway, this was a great video! I hope you're staying warm and comfy over there, haha.
I love your deep dive series and rise and fall series !! Thanks for all the work you put into them Kelly!
Thank you so much!
Great video! I love these behind the scenes looks at the beauty industry.
Like awful…
Yep. Still waiting on a neutral palette and they’ve released like 4-5 since I started buying from them. 😒
This was very interesting! Thanks for the info, Kelly! Love these videos!
@@MyCleverHandle LOL
Sydney Grace. Seriously. Really good quality shadows across the board. Great range.
I really loved Colourpop when I first got into makeup but now I feel like their quality isn’t as great as other brands I love… I still get a palette here or there but I don’t love it like I once did :(
Hey .. they sell radiator oil filled heaters on Amazon that you can plug into the wall and they work AMAZING! Just fyi... In case you didn't know.
I like ColourPop. As a Gemini I am drawn to colorful things and constantly changing makeup looks. It is more suitable for me than for other brands!
Love Colour pop on the whole! Decent quality and prices overall!
Omg yeah, as a portuguese I refuse to give them money, they clearly don't care about their european costumers
@@rutealmeida3331 they also made some collection ‘not available’ for EU shipping like the Sailor Moon one , one of my friend was so upset about it after waiting the launch for literal hours ...
@@giuliagallus8883 wth is their problem man
This is such a fascinating series, well done.
They really do need to slow down
I don't love the fast fashion model but I wish they were making an effort to be more sustainable if they are going to continue with that.
I love these series so much!!
I love their products buy all the time! Great prices and quailty, you can not beat them.
Understand the radiator life, it was 80 in VA yesterday and 54 tomorrow. Yesterday windows open letting the breeze in, today got a space heater on 😅
I like Colourpop as fun makeup, like the recent Limelight release.
Radiator struggles was like 30% of how I fell in love with my husband. Nice to have a boyfriend with central air! 💕great video.
I'm so excited for this!!
