Oh WOWSERS what an absolute STUNNER of a Fero, I absolutely LOVE it so much, those spines and color of the spines are BEAUTIFUL, I really LOVE the big size Cacti, and your new Fero is an AWESOME looking specimen, Oh my GOSH haha, Hans and I are drooling over this new beauty, and its going to absolutely thrive in your backyard with your wonderful sunny warm Climate, you have repotted it so beautifully in the Terracotta bowl, thanks so much for sharing your incredible new big Fero cylindraceous with us Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a super Sunday ahead XXXX
Thank you, Lyn. I am so thrilled to have this ferocious fero! 😄 I hope it will like its new home in my backyard and that it does not mind a little TLC from now on. 😉
Hi, Thanks for sharing this beauty! What is your soil composition on this? I just got one and would appreciate any hints on your soil mixture. Like how much organic material did you use? Is there any diatomacious earth, fertilizer or something special in there?
Awesome looking Ferocactus, Ana. Edith has a small one of these in SG. Looks great in that pot with some nice lava rock top dressing 😊 It’s good they save these plants in the areas they’re developing rather than just destroying them 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜☕️
I love your new cactus, Ana! 😍 Such a gorgeous specimen. You had to have 2 cups of coffee for the adrenalin! That one is huuuge! 🤣 Awesome purchase. Looove loooove the red spines! ❤️🌸🌼🌺💚
Thank you. I must admit I kept seeing those yellow tags here but never bothered to dig deeper as to what it means. Until now. Haha. Because of UA-cam. Now I’m on the lookout for more yellow tags. 🏷 😉
OMG 🤩👏👏👏! What a specimen 🏆👌💯💕! I'm happy to know that desert government protects their flora. Looks pretty in that pot and the lava rock makes it even better 😍. I have a problem now... I need one😅!...but in my terrace (I find it dangerous for my tiny patio 😁)🙈.
I so enjoyed this video! That is a wonderful fire barrel. Many years ago, travelling through the Mojave, I collected one of these from private land. It was much smaller and of course it couldn't survive here in western Washington even with protection. They are such an icon of the mojave I just had to try. They are incredibly beautiful when growing thick on a hillside with the setting sun behind them. Then they truly appear to be on fire! I am in love with your gloves! Those are going on my list to Santa this year. Please keep us updated on this cactus.
You described this cactus very well! Backlit by the sun is when it is best to look at them. 😍 The gloves that I’m using is my favorite. As you can see it is dirty as I use it a lot. It is not 100% proof against spines but it is the one that best deals with them among my gloves. Link to this gloves is in my video description. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine Thank you! I'll be using your link to get the gloves. I've used welding gloves but they are a bit too thick and don't protect your arms as much.

I use clay 'Akadama' as my soil mixed with river sand, and a soft soil called 'kanuma'. I use 10% potting mix to add a little nutrients like Nitrogen. I add manure pellets when I repot👌just like you recommend🤲💞It's terrible when native cacti have to be taken from their habitat, but it's nice to see them survive and get a home🌟Thanks for the video. Does your manure pellets give off an awful smell? That is the only reason that is stopping me from using them. Between my dog and those manure pellets, my neighbors might complain! 😷😁

Honestly for something of this size and age, I have no idea how big it can get. But usually cacti here in the desert don’t grow deep roots. They spread on the surface to have the most access to the very little rainfall we get.
So amazing that they actually are making sure they dig up all the protected cactus before they would get destroyed...especially since many are of great age too... so lovely you got to buy and give one a good home, I hope it lives many more years! Cactus are just so magical! Great video Ana! Mixing the Soil was a really good Idea. They actually love Clay. Since it lost so much Roots ( i think they cut the big Ones when they dug them up) ,i would transplanted him into a Pot that is a few cm bigger than the Catus itself and really shallow to help the roots getting water and not staying too wet for too long but i think thats just my climate here in Germany. Good Job :)
Thank you. You are correct. I have to be careful with this one when watering it. I used this pot as I don’t want to keep moving it to a bigger pot as it grows. It is heavy as it is now. Hopefully, this can live in this pot for many years before I need to move it again. 😉 Cheers! 🌵☕️
@@CactusCaffeine I believe this Firebarrel found a Home for life ;D and a Pot for life since even though he will outgrow the Pot in prob 10 Years repotting will never be necessary because they like sitting in a ,,tight fit Shoe´´ I wish you the best Flowers next Year :)

It is cold hardy and can withstand occasional snow when mature. Here in the Mojave desert, it will get snowed on but only for a few hours then the snow melts quickly. 🙂

Speaking of the soil, I would rather keep the entire original soil - actually it looks very good and the only thing that I would add is about 10% of organic matter and some coarse sand for better drainage.
Yes, it is outside. The pot is too heavy to move it. So far, it looks fine. Although I don’t see any visible growth, it has not shrunk in size either so I take that as a good sign. I cover it with freeze blanket whenever our temperature goes below freezing.
It's good that there's a system to protect the wild stock. Recently there has been a whole load of cacti from Mexico that have been made illegal to trade in, not even if they have been grown from your own seed 😮 Would you like me to send you the PDF that lists them all? Some of mine are on the list which means I can't sell any of them 😯
Would love to see that list. Please email it when you get the chance. cactuscaffeine@gmail.com Why would they ban it if it is seed grown by a grower? 😮
@@CactusCaffeine Message sent 🙂 Theory being that the grower shouldn't have the seed in the first place as the plant it came from was taken without a permit 😮
I just planted a packet of seeds of ferocactus acanthodes along with ferocactus glaucescens on 9-11, when the moon was in Scorpio. They sprouted within a week. Now I know what my plants will look like maybe 15 years from now. I remember back in the sixties when I first started growing cacti, every dime store had a rack of Crosman seeds and one of the varieties they offered was barrel cactus, Ferocactus acanthodes. The picture on the packet wasn't that attractive, so I never bought any. When I found out how attractive they were, I put them on my wish list. PS. Yes I plant by the moon sign. I learned a long time ago that seeds sprout much faster when you plant on the recommended days. Some people say that the water table is much higher at those times. If that is true, why does it work even when you sow your seeds in a pot on the sixth floor of a high rise with no connection to ground water? My personal theory is that since plants are geotropic, they can feel the relative position of the Earth, Sun, and Moon and respond to it. I use Blum's Garden Calendar and I get good results. (I also get a recipe for a delicious meal every month.) If nothing else, it lets me plan and have my equipment and supplies ready ahead of time.
I’ve read about how our ancestors would use early astronomy to time their planting and harvesting. I like how you apply it to cactus seed sowing. It is interesting. Good luck to your seedlings! ☺️🌵🌵🌵
What is this lava rock? I mean, exactly, I've searched this but I never found nothing about. I need to know this specifically because if I wanna buy it, here in Brazil, I have to correctly translate it. For example, it easy to find expanded clay pebbles (even granulated), perlite, coarse sand, charcoal granulated, but I never saw this lava rock ou even the pomes
It is called scoria. It's a vesicular basalt, which means it is a foamy form of basalt with a lot of air bubbles. It is formed during volcano eruption, when the gasses are released and basaltic lava came out in a foamy form (just like opening a bottle of a Coke after shaking it vigorously). It is red because of iron oxidation.

Is this lava rock literally lava solidified? I mean pyroclasts?
It is called scoria. It's a vesicular basalt, which means it is a foamy form of basalt with a lot of air bubbles. It is formed during volcano eruption, when the gasses are released and basaltic lava came out in a foamy form (just like opening a bottle of a Coke after shaking it vigorously). It is red because of iron oxidation.
if i were to buy a cactus like that here in germany id have to spend at least 400€, you're lucky to get them for that 70$ 😅
😮 Really?! Ok, you just made me feel less guilty spending that much. 😁 Thanks for watching. Cheers! 😊☕️
Jak dla mnie żywcem wyrwane z natury , ferak tej wielkości przy tym stanie korzeni marne szanse na dalsze życie.
