Hey Jay! If I had I waited to do things the traditional way, the way "people" said I was supposed to do them, I wouldn't have two indie features under my belt. You inspire with your bravery to say this out loud. You bolster the journey of countless kindred souls. Be strong. Be clear about what it means to be successful FOR YOU. Then chase that sh*t like there's no tomorrow. We are right here with you, sharing the struggle to be seen and relevant as creatives that effects the world for the good. Hugs, M!🙃

Hi Jay, I totally get it, I myself go through annual waves of feeling the same way, mostly after results of screenwriting contests, but I try and keep strong, I feel like I’m old too but it’s a dream that keeps on giving. Ultimately family want what’s best for you even though it might not come across in the moment, but they don’t want to see you struggle or be upset, which is how it feels with trying to get success in writing. I know I sometimes look to family as the bedrock of my support but sometimes things get said and it isn’t meant to hurt, it definitely comes from a place of love not destruction. The apartment situation is not helping and I’ve been there with noisy neighbours, it can be soul destroying trying to exist in the space that is supposed to comfort you. I think all of the comments are great and should fill you with a sense of pride that there is support for you to keep going!

Jay, I only feel the way you do when I reread my stories. I'm like is this good enough? Then I watch a movie and say this was crap. How did this even get made. Then I'm inspired all over again. Write about a man that can't write because his upstairs neighbors...his the unalives them...I've been what you are going though.

Jay, I hear you, and I just want to tell you that everything is going to be okay, as corny as it sounds. Life is tricky, and you are going through a not-that-easy period. That only means one thing to me: you are not stagnating. which is what matters the most. I am 100 percent sure you will get where you need and want to be. Hugs and love from Sofi Du.

Hey, Jay. Sorry to hear you're going through a rough time. Ever since I first met you way back in elementary school, I've only wished the best for you. You've been an inspiration to me for literally almost my entire life. Keep your head up.
As far as that dog upstairs goes, we have a squirrel that has made its home underneath the metal eave of our front porch and I can hear that sumbitch in there scrambling around all the freaking time. It sounds just like that upstairs dog, just with a metallic scraping noise thrown in for good measure.

OMG, that dog sound gave me PTSD!!!! Please tell me you are not in the same situation with another loud upstairs neighbor (which is coincidentally how I found you 😂). I'm the upstairs neighbor in my new place and I feel like GOD!!! 😂😂😂

Martin Scorsese is 81 and still hitting it out of the park. I know, it probably helps if you have banks full of money. But his passion is still there, and he is making new content. Keep making content and good luck!

First, how does one define success? I always remember some friends of a friend I met once. They were like my friend musicians. (I learned in school to read music and have some inherent musical ability, but I am not a musician.) At one point in the conversation they said, not even to me, "If you can earn a living and pay your bills doing music, you are a successful musician." I extend that to all creative fields. If you're paying your bills and doing what you love, that's success even if it's not fame.
Second, if you in the end decide anyway not to work in the movie industry, you can pivot to other forms of writing. I don't know your actual writing work but you've done enough that you've been interviewed about how to write. That's how I became aware of you. Give yourself credit for all the things you have done.

I feel you brother. This is hard. As soon as I heard the ceiling sounds in the start of the video I immediately felt your pain. I lived in an apartment under a couple with a kid. While working in a call center (which is also mentality taxing). I was sleep deprived for 6 months straight. I am also getting old for my industry as I work in IT. Yet I can't find a job with a decade of experience.
Don't give up. You've already made some progress and you can make more. it sounds like you have thought about route you're taking isn't working, and you're trying to break out of your box to see possible other routes you can do. If you give up, that's it - you come back back to it again.
You have a story to tell, and people will listen. It's matter of finding that thing that lets you tell it.

This is heartbreaking. And Dude. I can’t imagine being without my mom and I know it will happen someday and I won’t have that guiding light anymore. I’m so sorry to hear about this experience or phase you’re going through. But dude, how could you not just think about what your mom would want during this time? Man don’t say if it hasn’t happened yet it won’t happen, everyday is a new beginning, a brand new start, you’ve only been learning more and more and if you got what you wanted way back then, you wouldn’t know how to appreciate it the way you’re going to now. I once heard a substitute teacher (*edit: 18 years ago) suddenly yell out of nowhere Never Never Never, Give Up. So I say that to you now. And I tell you this, if there’s one true thing in this world, and even in that small town, it’s if you do what’s in front of you the best you can, with your whole heart and focus and care, and willingness to ask why not instead of why, if you just do what’s right here right now as well as you can, everything else around you will fall into place. It may even begin with the small measures as I call them, the little things you pass by everyday in your house or car that you need to fix or clean etc. just start doing what you see thats in front of you that you know you need to do, and they’ll all get done, even finding the right set of eyes on that work in progress. Thats what I say at least. Bless you man, amen.

You inspired me to start producing my own animated series. We're working on Episode 2 now. Episode 1 has 227 views. And yet, my creative partner and I still gain so much genuine joy from watching it together.
Maybe you just need a mirror, someone to bounce your passion for storytelling off of. He reflects back at me the exact same level of enthusiasm I carry for the story, despite him doing little to no writing, and primarily focusing on the 3D animation side.
The show is our baby and we love it. It doesn't need to find an audience, it exists as an expression of joy.

Jay, you know I'm there for you, gimme a call anytime you need to talk, my dude. 3 quick reactions: 1- you're not breaking in. You're a gifted writer who has written novels. You're already in, so it's leveling up. 2. ya just moved, big transition, new place, etc. Give it time to normalize. 3. That dog. Yeah, it's a giant puppy. Try to see it as an opportunity. The people up there need a thick carpet. Say hi, bring em cookies & a dog toy, introduce your charming self, suggest a thick carpet, maybe they are in the film biz too, break the ice, etc. Get to know em & the pooch. 4. You look great on camera and have a gift with lightning/audio mood. Oh shit is that four things? My bad. ;-)

Maybe Mum was trying to help in her own way, sorry to hear she is no longer with us.
Hard business to crack, just need to be ready when luck leads you to an opportunity. Feel you, at 42, I stop and wonder what I’m doing once a month. Stay strong brother, hoping to see you put up a video one day of a big sale or new (good) management taking you on. 🤞🏼
    PS: That Dog, 🤬

Perhaps finding success in the traditional sense is not for you, why wait for someone to give you a chance. You have a cool camera, a few buddies and a UA-cam Channel with 1k subs, make your own movies. Maybe they won't be as big or as expensive as mainstream cinema, but that's fine. Don't make movies your idol, the pillar of your happiness.

I completely agree. Make you own films. I’m in a similar place although I haven’t put much of my writing out there but I think people want to see completed polished pieces that can guarantee some returns. Try to put that dream team together and see what y’all can accomplish with minimal means. Shorts I think are good warm ups and make some of the shorts proofs of concept for your features. Don’t give up man, please don’t give up!

Hey Jay, Hope you keep at it with your screenwriting, but if you choose not to, you probably should move back to New York'cause if you stay in LA, you'll always be bitter because you couldn't break the ice.

So many comments. Too bad Mom was the only one that believed. Can’t imagine what this comment section would look like if there were more people that cared.
The fact that you are considering quitting means that something is right there. Remember the guy in the picture digging for the diamonds that was a few strikes away? Don’t be him. Age in the industry is that still a thing? People want to make money period. If you got something that will make them money they don’t care if you are 2 months old or 2 toes in the ground.
Imagine if I told you, “Jay I’m about to give up”… yeah you sound silly saying it too 😑
