Great question! Here is the follow up video: ua-cam.com/video/hd2LrBLEBYs/v-deo.html and the next one after that: ua-cam.com/video/8WKom2wVytY/v-deo.html They did take longer than the cardboard I usually put in but I think if you put in a little bit each feeding you can build a string of progressively decomposing magnolia leaves. This way it's not a huge mass of slowly breaking down magnolia leaves all at once that don't give the benefit of bedding right away in the worm bin (moisture absorption, ready to eat carbon etc that cardboard gives) I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

I just released a video on making my next round of worm chow: ua-cam.com/video/gl094ZjkOp8/v-deo.html Thanks so much for asking a great question & thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Thank you!! The results are still in progress. I'm hoping to see some significant break down at the next feeding within a week to 10 days as the cardboard I use usually shows serious signs of consumption by then. I've heard waxy leaves are not ideal for a worm bin so I'm hoping to find out 1. if they ignore them and go for the cardboard 2. if they produce darker castings 3. if the central and little veins in them become long term sticks in the bin. I will keep updating with every video and show pictures of the progress. Thanks so much for watching!! Sorry I wasn't able to have it all in one video!🪱🪱🪱
Sorry for the confusion! When I harvest castings out of this bin, which is almost every time I feed it, I like to release the worms that get caught in the sifter at the end to watch them go down below the surface. About 50-60% of my Outdoor Worm Bin videos have a time lapse at the end. So that was supposed to be different from the main theme of the video which is the beginning of a long term experiment with waxy magnolia leaves. Thanks so much for watching and passing on great feedback to help me improve!!🪱🪱🪱
Great question!! I did my first partial harvest 70 days after starting the worms in this outdoor bin. I didn't harvest before every feeding at the beginning, like I try to do now, as I was trying to bulk up the bin and get used to how much the worms produced. But now that there are so many worms and I can feed them big feedings; a harvest like you saw here is the norm!! Thanks for the great question and thanks for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱
Great question!! When I make their soil I use about 15% worm castings (about 5-6 handfuls of soil to one handful of castings) Occasionally I add a little to the top, but I also make worm casting tea, which I try to water in a least once a week. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching my videos!!🪱🪱🪱
I have been exclusively using chopped up leaves from last fall as the bedding instead of cardboard. I chopped them up rather small with a leaf chopper I bought on FB cheap ( ua-cam.com/video/SuOWuSGEzdo/v-deo.html ) and add them when I feed them. They are great at controlling moisture and the worms seem to really like it based on how much is gone from week to week.
That is great to hear!! I really thought I'd be using more leaves when I started back up vermicomposting but I just had soooo much cardboard & newspaper scraps. The leaves, I would think, are better bedding when it comes to the nutrient value of the castings especially when you can get them super small like you do!! Thanks so much for sharing the link and letting us know how you use leaves in your worm bins!! And of course thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Worm castings are the nutrient & microbial rich worm poop the worm excretes. Worm eggs are usually called cocoons although they are more like eggs with babies inside! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I have another question Sir. What's the purpose of a cocoon nursery? Do I need to create that or can I just leave them in with the rest of the worms 🪱.
No, you do not need a cocoon nursery. You can leave them in with the rest of the worms. A cocoon nursery is just a way to try to get as much of the worms back into your worm bins. You will find that your worms will reproduce so much that you don't mind trying to capture every last worm for your bins. If baby worms or cocoons end up in your garden they will eventually migrate to a place with lots of dead material life leaf piles or a compost pile.
I had been holding off on the magnolia leaves because of how waxy they are so time to see if keeping waxy leaves out of a worm bin is another wurbin-legend!! Ironically this bin seems to have a little darker castings than the VermiHut & tiny wormbin, but they may be because I add in compost occasionally...but when I add them all to storage they appear to be the same color!! I've heard using leaves gives a darker "richer" color to castings so it will be fun to see if I notice a difference! Thanks so much for watching Rick!!🪱🪱🪱
Good morning, Patrick, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱 I will be interested in your success with Magnolia leaves. I wonder if you put some in the NutraBullit and made a powder how fast the 🪱 would process 💩 it?
Good morning Peggy!! I knew that tree would be an issue when we bought the house 17 years ago as I watched a group of magnolias grow sky high in a giant cement planter at Disney World as a kid as I was growing up. I hated to get rid of it but my driveway & walkway were lifting and I knew my pipes were in an danger from the roots as well. If the had just planted it away from the house it would have been alright! As you know they drop their leaves all year round so I won’t miss that…they also seem to take forever to degrade, I’m assuming from the waxiness. That is a great idea to blitz them since they are bone dry…but a lot of work for my tiny blender😂 thanks so much for your insight and for watching & supporting me!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost I was thinking that you could run the mower over them and break them up a little. We closed on this house Sept 7th 2007. The developer planted a Live Oak tree 4 feet from the driveway and right over where our waterline was laid. How stupid. 6 years ago we had it removed because our driveway was lifting.
@@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 It seems like they are just looking for the quick esthetic instead of what is best for the long term esthetic and health of the homes!!
@@Vermicompost Windermere is a "Tree City" and as such any builder MUST replant a certain amount of trees per acre. This was old orange 🍊 acreage. Every lot was required to have 4 trees. We had 2 live oaks in the back yard and 1 in the front. And 1 Crape Myrtle in the front. The Myrtle is still here and I planted an Elm in the swale for shade. In the hot months it shades the front of the house. It drops in leaves in Autumn 🍂 and allows the Sun to warm the house in winter. Developers are selling houses, not necessarily efficiency.

I have snails in the bin that I put leaves in. :(
Oh man, that is my biggest fear...hitchhikers making their way in the bin!! Sorry to hear about the snails!! But thanks so much for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱
What's a casting? Is that a worm egg?
Worm castings are the nutrient & microbial rich worm poop the worm excretes. Worm eggs are usually called cocoons although they are more like eggs with babies inside! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@Vermicompost Thank you sooo much. I received 1,000 worms from Amazon yesterday, and your video have really helped me prepare for them.
I have another question Sir. What's the purpose of a cocoon nursery? Do I need to create that or can I just leave them in with the rest of the worms 🪱.
Awesome!!
It will be interesting to see how they do with the magnolia leaves. Also wonder if the castings will turn a bit darker. 🤔🪱💩
Good morning, Patrick, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸

I will be interested in your success with Magnolia leaves.
Exactly!!
Great job worms. 🪱
They won worms of the month this month! Thanks for stopping by AJ!!🪱🪱🪱
