  • South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) on Monday denied claims that the head of the spy agency General Akol Koor Kuc is plotting to assassinate President Salva Kiir Mayardit in order to come to power and warned that adversaries are plotting to set the two men against each other.
WhatsApp groups have been circulating an audio message attributed to General Akol Koor saying that he has set up a team of traditional doctors to get rid of Kiir in order to replace him, claiming that the head of state has failed to bring development to the country and has instead led the country into war that has brought suffering upon the people.
But speaking to reporters at the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters in Juba yesterday, David John, NSS spokesman, denied the claim and warned that those he referred to as adversaries are trying to create rifts between President Kiir and General Akol.
“The public is hereby informed that the Director General is not in the country and does not know of such evil acts directed at harming the person of the President, his reputation, and integrity. Adversaries of the Director General, who want to create a rift between him, and H.E. the President concocted the media propaganda,” he “We implore you all to not take part in such harmful propaganda as it not only threatens the safety of our president, but also undermines the stability of our country. The ISB is dedicated to protecting our great country and will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the peace and harmony worked so to attain,” it added.
It warned that the agency, which is previously accused of human rights abuse in the past by international organizations, is working to bring the people behind the recorded audio to book.
“However, anybody found engaging in such harmful propaganda against the integrity and person of the president and that of the Director General of the internal Security Bureau (ISB) shall face the full force of the Law if apprehended,” it said.
“Equally, the Service will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of justice, and we will ensure that those responsible for spreading harmful propaganda are held accountable for their actions, and currently, the institution is thoroughly conducting its own investigation, and the public shall be informed in due course.
“Therefore, the National Security Service appeals to the public to refrain from such harmful acts, which constitute a grave crime under our Laws and cooperate with our investigating team and report any suspicious activities immediately.”
