  • This is Part 4 in my Bits Series. We are talking about solid mouthpieces, and how to choose a bit for a horse carrying a kid or a rider lacking in confidence.
    Solid Mouthpieces
With a solid mouthpiece, you don't have the ability to TEACH lateral softness like you do with a broken mouthpiece, so the horse really needs to understand this first. With a solid mouthpiece, you should really be riding one-handed, guiding with the outside rein and outside leg. Shorten the reins to take the sloppy bounce out of them because the horse will feel that in his mouth. If you encounter an issue that needs correcting, don't use the bit to correct it. If you NEED the bit to correct the problem, you'll need to go back to a snaffle or lifter bit that has the ability to give you the lateral softening.
    Bits for Kid Horses
I like to put horses in a correction bit when a kid is riding them. The theory behind this is that a kid will learn to pull and fight against a snaffle since they don't have enough leverage. If you allow them to learn with a leverage bit, however, they learn to ride with light hands, they have enough control to stay safe, and they can be confident as a rider.
