@@evankim2406 Is it though ? They basically just changed the engine from Renderware to Unreal. Would switching the engine of 1965 a Shelby Cobra to some 2024 Tesla junk make it a 2024 car ? That's highly debatable. Had Rockstar added new weapons, swimming abilities or extra mission/gameplay features, that would have been another matter.
6:29 Yakuza: Kiwami is the perfect example. It's a remake of the first Yakuza game on the PS2 era, it fixes a lot of issues, fixes some plot holes, improves the gameplay drastically and adds a lot of modern Yakuza features. It made old fans happy, and brought new fans to the series. The map is pretty much the same (with few extra additions), then again, most Yakuza games share the same Kamurocho district layout. Some shops and areas change between games. But the layout is pretty much the same.
I hope they keep updating these games, there is still so much to improve and fix. I think they should focus on fixing character models, adjust or fix gaps (roads and grass), and camera controls. After that I think it will be truly "definitive."
These games will never be "definitive" until they reimplement the cut songs back into the soundtrack, but that would be asking for too much from them apparently.
@@TheHudsonPhoenixnot as simple as it sounds lol. Rockstar asked most of the artists/record labels that own the rights to the songs that were omitted and most of them declined and didn’t want their music in the games.
I think the models and textures would have to be entirely remade, as well as lighting actually put effort in. No matter how much ray tracing or vibrancy you throw at something, it won't make a pleasing to look at image. The originals, while immensely dated in graphical fidelity, had a consistent aesthetic. With every neon light, with every AI upscaled and changed texture, with every mischosen model material, the visuals keep the same hit or miss look to them that makes it difficult to accept as anything more than some random guy's "remaster" modpack.
@@TheHudsonPhoenix Thats literally impossible lmao. The rights holders for Michael Jackson songs are literally aholes that dont want to sell the rights to restore it. It's not rly just Rockstar's fault.. At least on PC we got mods
A man's dream: remake one of each trilogy at a time with standardization graphics, art, mechanics across all games of with quality of life and modern features + additional content, fixing some pacing issues. Hell might as well remake all the side games like the Stories series, I'd pay a whopping $100 for that in total...
It's a sad world where even something as basic as wanting a stock gta VCS pc port is a fever dream considering the chances of that happening. And the only tangible excuse is some dumb music licensing, because rockstar is too poor to pay the lump sum of money to label companies that charge immense amounts of money just to use a song.

@@Buzz956 that game specifically is more messy though as Phil Collins is an actual in game character related to the story which would cost more to renew.
Renaming your studio Grove Street Games and not being able to properly render said Grove Street in the game is the actual dick move. That being said, I am glad I still own the original trilogy both physically and digitally. I thank the old me for buying the PS2 emulated version on PS4 back in 2018.
The sorting issue with rain, and water at release was one of the most obvious problems, i mean its right at the start of GTA 3, did they not playtest the first game in the collection's very first mission lol!?
Don't you miss the days when game developers weren't lazy corporate sell outs and actually built a functioning game before releasing it, not relying on patches which makes people have to go online bleeding them through their wallet
I think the biggest obstacle for a proper remake would be the motion capture. They likely don’t have the original recordings, and even if they did, those older captures aren’t as advanced as current motion capture technology. Trying to sync the already recorded voice lines with new facial movements would be quite challenging, and automated systems wouldn't yield results on par with the ones used in GTA 4 or 5. So... yeah, it would be a tough job.
@@nickrustyson8124 the funny thing is originals have less compressed sounds that defective edition (even though they are still compressed), idk how they fucked up so badly
@@nickrustyson8124yeah, and they can't really bring a dead voice actor back, like Tommy's voice actor, the remake will either just reuse the audio files or hire a new voice actor, maybe even with the technology nowadays they can use A.I but would we want that?
Love your content Badger! One thing to say about a remake - a thing I don't see mentioned often is that if you were to keep the original voice performances to "save time", it would add tens of thousands of hours of work to get facial performances on par with body performances since back then they were not capturing face data; all of that would have to be hand-animated using reference footage - think The Last of Us' remake which had the same hurdle. That's best-case-scenario too, I'd imagine any reference footage Rockstar might have is low quality.
They could probably get most of the cast from 3 and San Andreas back but Vice City would be very difficult considering Ray Liotta has passed away, the guy from Smokey and The Bandit that voiced Avery hated working with Rockstar and that a lot of the cast are famous actors.
If you'd asked me the Definitive Edition shouldve include all ps2 era new improvements because thats what everyone used to say "man im to accustomed San Andreas to play GTA 3."
9:00 tbh I doubt it was Rockstars choice, it was probably Take2. Wouldn’t surprise me if the DE was created during Covid after delays to V’s next gen patch.
I'm actually totally fine with not having a bunch of modern features. A big part of these old games is experiencing how games played before everything went "standardized".
I did read recently that the only reason the Remakes even exist is because Rockstar didn't want to pay EA royalties for the Renderware engine anymore, hence the removal of the original on Steam too.
They were either the cheapest option or Rockstar wanted them to do the remasters because they were based on the mobile ports and they thought GSG knew what they were doing. Tbh even if these are very old games i don't think it's that easy to port full games to a whole different engine and expect everything to work like the original one. Rebuilding 3 whole games in 2 years might be a bit too much for a small mobile game studio
@@nickrustyson8124 The biggest gap was between VC and SA. VC only took 9 months to be finished because it was based on GTA 3 with a few improvements. SA was built from the ground with new engine and stuff so yeah...
There was more glitches added though in gta san andreas where all phone calls from girlfriends are nonexistent, a glitch were if CJ is silent during a date then the date can't be ended, cutscenes has missing dialogue, and caligulas is destroyed. The games still have a long way to go but im glad these games never got a remake.
They should of added beta and removed content back into the game, like having the option to have LCPD vehicles in the original NYPD based livery (only the helicopter kept it in the final game).
4:06 that VCPD helicopter is the wrong colour, its supposed to be green and white, i did play before the update and it definetly was not blue like that, is that a new bug?
5:56 Disagree. We had remasters of the old Tomb Raider games which were much more older than the GTA games and the devs there did a phenomenal job. The age of a game has never been a barrier to how well its can be remastered.
I read somewhere that the map in GTA 3 was only about 3 miles but back then we didn't know that, we were like HOLY FUCKING SHIT THE MAP IS HUGE MOM GET ME THAT FOR CHRISTMAS.... yeah, none of us were old enough to have a job yet..... oh wait, that's the year I got my first job and it was that same month so after getting my first paycheck I went straight to Gamest- Electronics Botique, showed my ID and got the game. That along with MGS2 and some Gundam game.
Thank you Badger for this video. I have followed VadimM for a while, but since you have done some great voice over work, I have been aware of your solo work and I love it. Great video Badger
One theory i have for why they went with wardrum studios is that they thought that considering that they worked on these games before the mobile ports that is, then they might be a good option, even though they did a piss poor job of porting those games before, but they may have figured that since that was years ago that they must have improved as a developer by now but of course they wouldve been dead wrong if thats what they thought
Yes, but with the massive cuts in music, these versions are VASTLY inferior to the originals. Much better to play the classics with the community patches.
I miss the days when a fully functional game at release was the industry standard. I miss the time when art-direction was more important than graphical fidelity. And when bugs were fun, like the swingset glitch in GTA 4, but didnt make the game unplayable. Rant over. Good video.
A few months after this collection initially came out I was at a Walmart and someone I guess had put the case in the wrong spot behind that glass, and it had 30 dollars listed under it. I had to talk to like 2 different managers to convince them to sell it to me for the price shown, but I walked out of there with a copy for that cheap. I *still* couldn't imagine paying 70 for it even after this enormous update. It's better now, obviously, but getting all 3 games for 10 bucks a piece was so nice.
Considering that the originals could be had for under $6 all three on sale before they took them down, so even $30 was too much especially with how awful they ruined the atmosphere of each and all their problems.
@@AJ-po6up I got the game amidst the controversy when everyone was selling their copies to get some money back for it for $15 on eBay. $7 of that price was shipping.
They really need to add a colored transition to the thin rings around the mini-maps in GTA 3 anf especially GTA Vice City. The pink, single colored ring is offsetting. The transition from blue to pink as in the weapon section looks great. The ring needs(!) to look similar. In GTA 3, I'd recommend a gold-shiny effect. The HUD is way too flat looking. San Andreas is looking completely fine and fits the cartoonish setting of GTA SA.
In San Andreas, the traffic poles falling to the ground, the fire truck's water (it was better before update), the mirrors in the tattoo shop, the cars getting pushed by us running towards it, the safe door in the Breaking the Bank at Caligula's mission, need fixing...and in Vice City, the rainy weather effects and haze are the only things that require a fix...
How about the music? A lot of what I like from vice city and 3 is the music on the radio. Is it the same as the original? I heard that they didn't bother to get permission to include the same music on the radio.
I believe the main issue is the Bad use of Specular and Ambient occlusion. There is a big missed opportunity in using those two artistically. Instead they are just there in there default unreal engine settings.
to be fair remakes are not necessary. the next gta is set in miami ( Vice city) and after that again in liberty city. the old mission structure from gta 3 doesnt aged well imo to many lame missions with time limit
8:30 Grove Street Games sent the entire files of the whole games to a bot farm in New Delhi, India to remaster the game entirely by automated scripts and AI enhancement. If you buy a DE on steam while you have the originals, does it replace those? A few things would be nice to see is to sprinkle everything with dust, so the whole world doesn't look so bright and shiny. Make cars less reflective and make lights look like lamps not modern LED.
for Vice City, they could have used some of Vice City Stories' sunset patterns and atmosphere, and for 3, they would have made it as dark as it originally was but this comes close... (almost forgot about swimming for Tommy, since VC's water is hella clean, from VCS)

Why would they do that?
Rockstar shouldve known better to make some indie company remaster 3 games that are 20 years old
I don’t think Rockstar want to even acknowledge them let alone an easter egg
Being able to moving around with the weapons in vice city and 3 made me very happy as a long time GTA veteran since 2006 or 07

Would switching the engine of 1965 a Shelby Cobra to some 2024 Tesla junk make it a 2024 car ? That's highly debatable.
Had Rockstar added new weapons, swimming abilities or extra mission/gameplay features, that would have been another matter.

Yakuza: Kiwami is the perfect example.
@Stana999 That's certainly possible. What source did you hear that from?

I really hope they continue the updates, the VC movement while shooting is such a good addition!
Idk if you could even call the Stories games "side games", imo they're better versions of 3 and Vice City.
@@coments101 i mean in how they're treated they're definitely spin-off like, even though they have everything and more compared to the games they're based on.
This game is cursed from the beginning by starting with the mobile version of the game

Character models still need work and it will never be the "definitive" collection until the full soundtrack is restored.
Which is never going to happen, music licensing if whole another can of worms to get into
@@nickrustyson8124Not really. They're just being cheap and won't fork out for games that clearly deserve nothing less than the best. They just don't care.
@@robertharper3114 I bet if they had actually made perfect remasters and also included all the original music (even if they couldn't renegotiate or renew them legally and just paid the fines by adding them in without permission) that Rockstar/Take2 would've still made more profit this way as its what the people actually want lol.
Lol rockstar literally didn't port gta vcs to mobile or even pc because they didn't want to pay Phil Collins again. You seriously think they will pay to get back a few tracks in their old games when they treated vcs so badly for this reason 😂
@@Buzz956 that game specifically is more messy though as Phil Collins is an actual in game character related to the story which would cost more to renew.

I'd be surprised if they update this game again, they pretty much ported and improved features from netflix version
Also speaking of voice lines they still stink of early 2000s compressed mp3s, like I was playing SA earlier and god the guns sound awful in this game

@@user-db6kq7bl5clmao damn yo
Still a turd except it doesn't smell that bad now.

I find it funny how the leaked HL2 Beta from 2003 feels like a more complete product than most games that come out nowadays

I'm actually totally fine with not having a bunch of modern features. A big part of these old games is experiencing how games played before everything went "standardized".
Then go play the originals
@@BigSmoke-ew5td I did.
@@danin900 Then go play them again
These remasters might still get updated, but I highly doubt they will ever get on the same level as the originals as far as details and nuances go.
I did read recently that the only reason the Remakes even exist is because Rockstar didn't want to pay EA royalties for the Renderware engine anymore, hence the removal of the original on Steam too.
Hi
Huge step to get a real Definitive version of these games, have a nice day Badger
I've been waiting for you to talk about this. Thanks for your opinion!
I’m glad it’s fixed. Decided to buy it while it was on sale on the PlayStation store
Hell the fact Rockstar made these games within the span of 4 years back then is crazy
@@nickrustyson81245 years but yeah. I miss the days when games used to come out regularly.. waiting a decade plus for a new release is ridiculous!
Not gonna lie I didn't know you had a funny side, you had me laughing real good at a few jokes and digs you took at the game. 😂
5:56 Disagree. We had remasters of the old Tomb Raider games which were much more older than the GTA games and the devs there did a phenomenal job. The age of a game has never been a barrier to how well its can be remastered.
Badinfos did really great videos on comparing original DEF. edition issues and fixes. Comparing bugs and which ones got fixed that he found
I read somewhere that the map in GTA 3 was only about 3 miles but back then we didn't know that, we were like HOLY FUCKING SHIT THE MAP IS HUGE MOM GET ME THAT FOR CHRISTMAS.... yeah, none of us were old enough to have a job yet..... oh wait, that's the year I got my first job and it was that same month so after getting my first paycheck I went straight to Gamest- Electronics Botique, showed my ID and got the game. That along with MGS2 and some Gundam game.
SA stilll has the bug where street lamps fall through the floor but VC and 3 have fixed it.
Doesn't matter now. We won't forgive, we wont forget.
I WAS PRACTICALLY WAITING FOR YOU TO TALK ABOUT THIS •_•
Thank you Badger for this video. I have followed VadimM for a while, but since you have done some great voice over work, I have been aware of your solo work and I love it. Great video Badger

I'm still so glad I never deleted the PS2 ports from my hard drive. Can't even get them on the store anymore even if you owned them before.
What the hell! Really?!!
Bought it for less than half price the other day. Completed GTA 3 and had no problems so far.
Haven’t tried Vice City or San Andreas yet.
I still hate the fact that the GTA Trilogy Remaster looks more like a cartoon and not a realistic game like before
One theory i have for why they went with wardrum studios is that they thought that considering that they worked on these games before the mobile ports that is, then they might be a good option, even though they did a piss poor job of porting those games before, but they may have figured that since that was years ago that they must have improved as a developer by now but of course they wouldve been dead wrong if thats what they thought
2:20 still didnt fix the cheetah carmirror glitch
Yes, but with the massive cuts in music, these versions are VASTLY inferior to the originals.
Much better to play the classics with the community patches.
GTA 3 is supposed to have a black/grey tone to it. Adding all that color takes away from the atmosphere
Badger’s voice reminds of Kazuhira Miller from Metal Gear Solid. I kept waiting on him to say, “They played us like a DAMN FIDDLLLLLLEEEE!”
I miss the days when a fully functional game at release was the industry standard. I miss the time when art-direction was more important than graphical fidelity. And when bugs were fun, like the swingset glitch in GTA 4, but didnt make the game unplayable.
Rant over.
Good video.
Does this mean that Asuka's lazy eyes in the definitive edition has also been fixed?
Thanks for the reminder that I need to see if the Switch version fixed Caesar's hot dog fingers were fixed
Did they add the missing soundtrack songs?
This has gotta be what’s kept San Andreas VR held up.
Perfect time to pick this up for Black Friday/ Cyber Monday
Im glad the stylists at petco were knowledgeable not only in trimming badger hair but in gta as well.
Thanks to the scrutiny in the definitive remake, there’s a vast chance GTA 6 will be as good as we promise
Don't get your hopes up.
Only thing missing is the ability to be able to play the game in a top down 2D view like in GTA 2
I hope they remaster LCS and VCS
8:30 Grove Street Games sent the entire files of the whole games to a bot farm in New Delhi, India to remaster the game entirely by automated scripts and AI enhancement. A few things would be nice to see is to sprinkle everything with dust, so the whole world doesn't look so bright and shiny. Make cars less reflective and make lights look like lamps not modern LED.
