The trombone? guy going nuts!! that guy is AWESOME! Love this song one of my favorites of all time, the song that switched me to metal. Funny enough gateways was made with the orchestra in mind where the Mourning Palace was written way before they ever thought about that possibilty.
There was a lot of open feeling to this song, because originally it was only made with a keyboard, guitars, bass, drums and a vocal. There were no classical instruments involved. This allowed them to create a good orchestral backing to fill up that open space. You're were on point there sir, but I think the band history is what you didn't know. This was their 3rd album released in 1997, but it was the first one where the majority of songs were in English, as it was aimed to target audience outside of Norway. The first time they implemented classical instruments was in 2001, but some songs had more some had less. Then in their 2003 album, they used an actual quartet (i think it was it was one bass, one cello and two violins) but for their 2010 and 2018, they went full symphonic orchestra and choir.
Dimmu are great, and I really like your reactions! :) If you are looking for another band that made a live gig with orchestra, try "Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands". Skálmöld is a viking metal band from Iceland. The videos from this concert are all great - band, orchestra and choir are having lot of fun together while playing live. :) I would suggest the song "Hel", because there is also a female guest singer like in Gateways from Dimmu. But the whole concert is worth watching!
Dimmu Borgir - Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny (live video - High Quality) best lineup, Nicholas Barker drums, ICS Vortex Bass background vocals, old but best :)
Nice to see you checking out some good old borgir! This was one of the first songs that got me in to metal like 20+ years ago. I would suggest you check out a band called Wolfheart! Maybe try their song The Flood ( ua-cam.com/video/kyKC3nYFi_k/v-deo.html )
One more song that fit with the orchestra is their self titled song from the same concert, its fenomenal!!!
I've been in this crowd.. I'd go again anytime, it was amazing

Orchestra is trash when compared to VORTEX. Seriously.
ICS Vortex was bad ass when he was with them.
