Yeah, but maybe she was fun and unique to him. She was probably different to the kind of women he was used to dating in the past. So it was a breath of fresh air to him. That's just my theory.
For me it was her interest in him that didn’t make any sense. Far too old and far too into himself. It wasn’t her he appreciated it was art and music, she just happened to be there.
It's probably been a long time, since he's been with someone that didn't share his passion and have knowledge in his interests and career. Therefore, as someone else said she may have been a breath of fresh air. He may have also been surrounded by people that acted sychophantic as his work heavily praised in the USA and France. Carrie saw him as a man first, unlike Charlotte who saw him as his art then a man second, so it may have been nice to be judged on who he is. It doesn't seem like Alexandr thought about this heavily, such as growing old together. I agree with someone else that he put her in a box like a doll and expected to lead while she falls in line with his way of life and choices. He didn't expect to compromise and this sometimes does happen when the male is older than the female and Alexandr is older than Carrie. The difference is Carrie has her own money, strong support network and verbalises her own needs. I think in this case opposites attract, Alexandr could never be with a woman who was exactly like him because she couldn't be there for him like he wants in a partner, she would discuss his sadness when she felt like it or dismiss it. Her work would also take time away from seeing him as much as he would like. I don't particularly like this character but I find it fascinating reading all these comments, I am definitely a minority, lol
The irony is that this episode ends with Carrie making him take her to McDonalds as that's her level of romance which is truly what's "icky" in this situation, not his romantic gestures.
I don’t understand why they had to make Alek a bad person. They should have had it to where Carrie realized they weren’t meant for each other but remained close friends. And she shouldn’t have ended up with Big, in fact, their last fight should have been the last time we saw him.
100%. They had him be fine at first and then turn into a giant dick to justify them not being together. It wasnt worthy of the show and it pissed me off bc it was lazy writing. The depth of his character highlighted the vapid nature of American culture. I'm in my mid 30's now and I'm married to an Italian in my same age group. We live in Rome and I have to say although we are a very modern, global couple, many of the romantic sentiments of this character are a part of my husband's sensibilities. My husband likes classical music and plays it on the piano along with jazz. He doesn't know anything about pop culture, he listens to music from Mali, Brazil, old 70's American R&B, jazz, classical, and reads classic literature like Greek philosophers, Russian writers and ancient Roman thinkers. We all get that the Russian was a romantic, but his gestures of romance didn’t speak to Carrie’s love language. Some people would love to have a person write a song about them, speak french, and recite poetry to them and that’s great. However not everybody wants that type of romance. What is seen as heartwarmingly romantic to one person can be extremely cheesy and overdone to another person. Some people are fine with just staying at home and watching TV with someone or going for a walk in the park or eating fast food with someone you love. I get how some people think Carrie is a little shallow, but I think she just kind of speaks to a lot of people who don’t need a romance from 1800s novel to feel loved.
Exactly, these comments talking about how Alexandr is too sophisticated for Americans only shows their ignorance and I'm not even American. Ladies aren't a monolith. It's not romantic to Carrie because he hasn't incorporated anything who she is and some ladies like me, like that. When my husband and I were dating he painted a picture of me all green inside a space ship surrounded by different constellations and him being pulled into my spaceship with a message saying "you abducted my heart". I love astronomy and spend my sundays nights looking through my telescopes. I doubt every woman in the world wants to be depicted as an alien.
Those who think that poetry and classical composition as a form of romantic expression are "1800s" are precisely those who will ended up courted at a MacDonald's. Carrie does not have another "love language"--she is shallow and without culture, period.
His idea of romance is pretty cliched though! He was dominant, selfish, made her decisions and ignorant to her emotional needs. He just used his money and cheesiness to try and impress.
Aleks would have been a great fit for Enid the more I think about it. He was too busy with his work for Carrie, but Enid made it clear that she has a full time job that is her priority, too.
And that was a brilliant point the show made. Aleks would never have even looked at Enid (the fabulous Candace Bergen!) She was too "old" for the hypocritical old letch. That he didn't want any more children (and therefore would have been perfectly suited to a more mature woman) never crossed his selfish little mind. And come on - Candace Bergen or SJP? Murphy Brown for the win!
Charlotte’s right. Their standards are in the bin that someone with genuine old fashioned romantic values is seen as fake. It didn’t make sense when Carrie took him to McDonalds at the end of the episode. She spends her time wining and dining at trendy restaurants and bars.
Now that you're older American, you mean... For Russians that's totally normal. It's called конфетно-букетный период. In translation something like ”chocolate-flower-bouquets stage”, when a man does grand gestures to win woman's heart
@@kinndah2519 hm, first of all I wonder how that is relevant in any way to the topic. It's like to say: - Pigs don't fly. - Yes, but cats are furry. Like... What?! Lol But if you want to discuss this topic for some reason, then no problem. But it's like to say, women are promiscuous in the States. Which is not true. But it's somewhat tolerated by society and there are those who are. Same could be said about cheating men in Russia. There's a huge amount of attractive women there. And a shortage of men who have much lower life expectancy. So it is also somewhat tolerated by society. And a lot of men are spoiled by the demographic situation being surrounded by beautiful females that outnumber them. And many women are willing to tolerate cheating. But there are also a lot of men who are monogamous. And a lot of women who wouldn't put up with infidelity. None of this would be relevant for a Russian person living in another country anyway.
@@user-xo5zt3ig6h Grand gestures to win a womans heart IS lovebombing though... It's bombarding someone with romantic gestures to convince them to be with you... Then once you have them you stop with the romantic gestures... That's not genuine. If you have to try so hard to get someone to be with you then maybe you're hiding something. There's a normal level of romance, and then there's a fake acted one. Often those who lovebomb are later on abusive.
I can't stand what they did to his character in the end. It was such a cheap trick. He was a very intelligent and refined man and she should have just left him on a good note. Yeah, he had his flaws, but they really weren't that bad. We forget, that he was preparing for a very important exhibit. His first in 6 years. He had a lot of pressure and had no time to keep her company. His work was his number one priority. Carrie should have just remained single. She wasn't equipped to have stable relationships. She was addicted to the drama and the chase. This is why she was so obsessed with Big. He made her chase him. In the second movie, she was rather displeased with their marriage, because the chase was no longer there. There really is nothing wrong with that, but she should have realised what she was like and settled for casual dating, instead of ended up with Big. It was a very delusional ending, in my not so humble opinion lol.
@@MsKira1313 Or maybe he needed a woman, who wasn't clingy and needy, like Carrie and had her own life and career. Not everyone has to be exactly the same or have identical values. I know a lot of you are giving Carrie crap about her reaction to his overly romantic ways but I agree lol. I do like romance but I also like just being with that person. It doesn't have to be disgustingly corny. Sometimes (a lot of times) it feels rather phony.
Only embittered and cynical women would call a man reciting or reading poetry to them "disgustingly corny". It is this attitude that has encouraged a world of text-message relationships and breakups on social media. No depth, no class
Baryshnikov! What romance, but with Carrie?! I get that this must have been a coup for SJP and a fun experiment for Misha, but it just doesn't work, even in the SATC fantasy world.
I’m with Carrie and Miranda on this one. That kind of over the top corniness would either cause me to burst out laughing or run to the toilet with severe nausea.

in this she is showing a distinct lack of class..he got the dress that was perfect for her..she whinges way too much about him..i would have loved that kind of attention lol
Carrie chose the dress, though. Earlier in the episode, she was admiring it in a magazine and said that the description of the dress was her kind of poetry. His gift is a thoughtful gesture to show he listens to her and respects her interests even if they are not his own. To read that as "patronizing" and "belittling" doesn't make sense to me.
Let's never forget how Carrie hated the engagement ring Miranda helped Aiden pick out for her. She was back stabbingly accepting of the next ring he chose for her, but then she wouldn't wear it and cheated on him

Charlotte’s right. Their standards are in the bin that someone with genuine old fashioned romantic values is seen as fake. It didn’t make sense when Carrie took him to McDonalds at the end of the episode. She spends her time wining and dining at trendy restaurants and bars.
He's going to give her clothes and she's going to fall in love
She's so predictable 😂 she got proposed to with a shoe later on btw
Well if you don't want him, can I have him?
Though he was romantic I think we can agree, now that im older that this was love bombing 🤷🏽♀️😂💯
Now that you're older American, you mean...
For Russians that's totally normal. It's called конфетно-букетный период. In translation something like ”chocolate-flower-bouquets stage”, when a man does grand gestures to win woman's heart
@@user-xo5zt3ig6h Yes but they cheat a lot there.
@@kinndah2519 hm, first of all I wonder how that is relevant in any way to the topic.
It's like to say:
- Pigs don't fly.
- Yes, but cats are furry.
Like... What?! Lol
But if you want to discuss this topic for some reason, then no problem.
@@user-xo5zt3ig6h I like you and your answer served it really well👏👏
@@user-xo5zt3ig6h Grand gestures to win a womans heart IS lovebombing though... It's bombarding someone with romantic gestures to convince them to be with you... Then once you have them you stop with the romantic gestures... That's not genuine.
If you have to try so hard to get someone to be with you then maybe you're hiding something. There's a normal level of romance, and then there's a fake acted one.
Often those who lovebomb are later on abusive.
...and at the end she chooses Mr Big? Please, please, please....
I love a passionate man!
Charlotte is right ...they were starved for romance.

Oscar De La Renta Pink Dress
It was so fabulous!
Had SJP had some work done to her teeth by this point? They seemed so perfect.
I love that dress 👗😍
If his work got in the way of his first marriage and any future relationships, he should just stay single.
@@MsKira1313 Or maybe he needed a woman, who wasn't clingy and needy, like Carrie and had her own life and career. Not everyone has to be exactly the same or have identical values. Carrie didn't present herself as needy in the beginning of her relationships. She always acted like a free spirit, which obviously confused the men later down the line. Aleksandr never promised her anything he didn't deliver. Did he promise he was going to be by her side 24/7? No, he did not.
@@sirbuffalo And that's why his first marriage failed.
@@MsKira1313 Well, not everyone finds the right person for them at first marriage. Some people take a lifetime to find the right partner. Especially people, who are unconventional.
He shouldn't have had her move to Paris, if he couldn't make time for her. That's where he was selfish.
So she didn't like the tune, but the dress was romantic enough. Materialistic af
This was just bad writing. Carrie who is a writer and supposedly this quirky free spirit has never dated any type of artist who created for her. She preferred a date at McDonalds to a night at the met. I would not expect that lack of sophistication from a would be journalist living in New York of her age.

Men are like that in the beginning of the relationship but it wears off fast and they are themselves.
Carrie ...one dimensional
Speaking from my younger selfish immature stance. I always believed that Petrovsky was too obsessed about his Art Career than to spare Carrie's feelings for happiness. My opinion have changed since.
Very sweet. Oh Carrie you lucky girl !
Most often women would be grateful to have a romantic companion like Aleksander but Carrie? No way!Her type was the tough unreliable one. The piano song is similar with a Greek singer's song Michalis Hatzigiannis :To soma pou zitas The body you ask for

why on earth is he wasting time on her?????///
She’s tight.
Aidan romanced her a lot, why is Carrie so forgetful? Or does Aidan mean nothing to her?
She’s always been way too in love with Big to give anyone else a real chance. As much as she tried he was the only one she truly wanted bc she couldn’t completely have him
Carrie was a hypergamist...when she coupled up, she wanted to be with a man who would raise her clout and status. The woman was a gold digger
And she preferred the utterly superficial, self-obsessed Mr. Big. No accounting for it.
When I first watched this I thought petrovsky was a snob & self centered. Maybe he is full of himself but I now realize what my immature 21 year old didn't was this man was brilliant an artist cosmopolitan pianist just another level of person he travels the world speaks different languages elegant refined mature not sure why he would be w/ selfish immature petty carrie. Shes not even some hot model that u could see a guy of this magnitude having some fun arm candy for a few months
Terrible way to handle this kind of romance
I had guys writting songs for me and they weren't Russian rich artists, just normal guys with their guitar. Why all the embarassment and drama around it? Why did they had to make him the bad guy so Big could look good? They could have just realized they weren't meant to be.
Carries whines about the Russian, because she just wants to whine and Talk about herself! She wants to FLATTER herself! She wants to Brag that she is loved by a man with Fine taste, an Artist, who knows beauty. She wants to keep talking. To Justify why she is going to live with a super OLD with a sagging ass.

Miranda stole this scene
I know a lot of you are giving Carrie crap about her reaction to his overly romantic ways but I agree lol. I do like romance but I also like just being with that person. It doesn't have to be disgustingly corny. Sometimes (a lot of times) it feels rather phony.
Only embittered and cynical women would call a man reciting or reading poetry to them "disgustingly corny". It is this attitude that has encouraged a world of text-message relationships and breakups on social media. No depth, no class

Listening to Carrie mispronounce French makes me wince. When she was in Paris, her French was so awful! It was painful to hear it.
Russian was so irritating
I would hate to have a dress bought and chosen for me. How patronising and belittling
