Jeez i love The Smiths! the band of my life
Johnny Marr is an incredibly underrated guitarist!!!!
I think it’s about how (in some families) home violence creates dysfunctional kids & sadly they become abusive parents
Andy Rourke's bass line is studied in collegiate music classes.
Such a great bassist
You can hear the funk influences
Morrissey is saying at schools in Britain the students were abused by teachers- "A crack on the head is what you get for asking and a crack on the head is what you get for not asking"- either way its a crack on the head. Keep reacting to the Smiths! Say hi to Lex & Jack!
But the lyrics are 'lasting' ie having the last word, getting above ones station, ya know. A commonly made mistake. But I guess it was a Lancashire thing.
Rourke and Marr - Simply brilliant in this one.
This is a banger live version! That bass really stands out as funky. And a very young and skinny Morrisey.
Discovering the compilation album - Louder Than Bombs my high school freshman year of '87 introduced me to my favorite group of all time.
RIP Andy Rourke
This was from an 80s tv show called the tube and it featured several different bands each week, usually the less mainstream bands than those that appeared on top of the pops which was just a top 40 charts show. But yes by this point they were already very big, at least in the uk and europe.
Flower-ass Morrissey, my favorite!
The clip is from a live music TV show called the tube which featured a number of bands from the time who all played live
Thanks. Great song. Great band.
I think shows like this had them sort of crowds - some just there to look cool and indifferent with pockets going nuts. I remember seeing an earlier Smiths concert where basically everyone just invaded the stage at the end!
Taken in hand = dealt with
yass
And the 2nd asking is actually 'lasting' - as in having the last word etc.
Pink Floyd "Another Brick in The Wall" more or less deals with the same subject matter. "Barbarism Begins At Home" features on their breakthrough album Meat is Murder. We almost covered the song in the band I was in back then, but opted for Bauhaus instead along with a cover of "This Charming Man".
it was very violent in the 80's in british schools
Great song thx
its awesome isnt it
Unfortunately or fortunately there’s is something in music popular or traditional ( folk) music. It is social circumstances and local geography ( before it turns into global). If we all understand it we will comprehend in depth what the poet means…..
"Taken in hand" means kept under control or disciplined.
While obviously Andy Rourke's tour de force, Johnny kindakillsaswell. The other two, less known blokes, aint bad either...
What you can’t figure out what “Taken in hand” means in a song titled Barbarism Begin’s at Home and has lyrics that say unruly boys and girls must be TIH (have their @&$ beat) and then goes on to say if you ask or don’t ask for something you get a Crack on the head
Even someone with a limited understanding of the English language could figure out it’s about children being abused
Which in no way shape or form is a light subject
Especially when you consider this is a Smith’s song where a lot of their songs have heavy song lyrics backed by funky bright music
Or after all their songs you reacted to you still haven’t figured that out yet🤷🏽♂️
Lord help us🙏🏾🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cmon on young man you’re killing me🤣
Just another rockabilly dance song about child abuse
Andy Rourke was impeccable. What an unforgettable bass player!
