Chad, I absolutely love your videos. I subscribed over a year ago. During the C- virus. I had 2 strokes a month apart. Was in the rehab hospital for almost 2 months and pretty much binged on your channel as well as a few other automotive channels. At that time I had pretty much given up ever wrenching on anything again but every episode brought me memories and joy. MLS.. has a strange way, but now it makes me smile. I love this project you're on now. I've watched you struggle physically from time to time but you always keep plugging away and always getter done.
I've relocate to Thailand now. My wife loves your channel. We watch it every week. She loves how it makes us laugh and me smiling sharing stories of my old project vehicles. She's been encouraging me to buy an old project vehicle over here to work on together. Your videos have not just been entertainment but also encouragement that with patience I could put something together. Today at the end of your video... the wife did the usual...blurrblub... laughed and said " Let's Go Do Something" haha.. she wants to build an old Isuzu truck together.
    I believe we will soon.
    Thanks Chad...more than you know
    See you next week

Years ago I bought a wireing harness for a '57 Chev from JC Whitney. It was Chinese made and ALL of the wires were light grey. I had to ohm out every wire. Fun Fun Fun.

My Best Friend got ahold of set of auto meter water temp oil pressure and volts brushed silver aluminum triple guage panel, and a replacement blower motor for a 71 Chevy c20 custom trim truck he bought that got a rebuilt motor and rewired, and one of the other issues is the stereo would lose the ground and quit working when you turn the wipers on?! Well i go to install the gauge panel set and every wire under the dash is dark blue 14 guage wires, and pull the stereo out to fix that and it was the same way, and the ground wire was tapped out of the wiper ground on the connector pigtail off the wiper motor and so was the blower motor fan for the heater, and i unhooked all of that, went over to one of my square body parts trucks and took the junction block off the firewall and added it to the 71 Chevy c20, and the amplifier 10 to 8 guage distribution block was added to the truck for the ground lugs, and then i ran my own 14 guage red for pwr, and the black ground wires for the guage panel and the blower motor fan which then worked fine and didn't need replaced, and the other junction block power stud got the 12 battery wire for the stereo and the ground wire was attached to the bottom of the metal dash?? Wow what a concept lol why they didn't do that for the radio and the heater blower motor fan when the factory switch went bad in the first place i don't understand.. but in my opinion and what i told my best friend id be extremely ticked off if i paid someone to rewire my truck and the blue wires running everywhere under the dash and nothing being labeled is what they did, someone would probably be losing some teeth...

I have the exact same harness you've got. Yeah, the instructions are worthless but I just used common sense and it's been working fine in my '47 Ford sedan. The circuits that you don't use, snip the wires short and put an insulated female end on the fuse block side so you can still use the circuit at a later date and not have to store the extra wiring under the dash. I love wiring !

I'm going to suggest that you take the ground wire off of the alternator, I believe that is for boat applications and not automotive, a friend had ground his in a 66 nova and he had to disconnect the battery to keep from killing it overnight, we removed the ground wire and everything was fine, it might even fix the problem with the light on the turn signal switch and the voltage meter not working with key on, great work and information on the wiring harness, I'm not far from putting one in my 47 and your information gives me a heads-up for what to expect, thanks Chad

    • @ThisNThatGarage
      @ThisNThatGarage  9 місяців тому

Alternator has to grounded somehow or it won't work. The brackets are painted so there's a chance it won't ground good thru that and the painted block. If his battery ran down then he had the wires backwards like I spoke of in the video.

The center light on your R/L turn switch should go to the head light switch. That light is only on when the head-running lights are on. The running lights must be separate from the blinking lights. When the light is hard on it will not bling. The running light will blink if it is wired through the R/L turn switch. Draw a simple wiring diagram and determine the switched input-output of the turn switch with your ohm meter. Ron PTL USA

Hi Chad. My guess regarding the continious power on the remote turn signal switch is you have the unit wired with the flasher unit after the turn signal. The intermittent signal never applies to the indicators integral to the switch unit.keep at it you will figure it out. Isn't wiring up older vehicles FUN!!! Looking forward to your next week's video.

Hiya Chad, get a coffee, my name is Chris, and im watching from the UK. Whatever you do, don't stop, because everything you do is the same way that i would do, in getting a vehicle to start and run!
I have heard the rain coming down on your garage roof, and it must be cloudbursts!
The problem with wiring is the fact that you don't do it all the time! I find that if you do it more often, the less of a drama it becomes! I watch from the UK, like i said before, and your common sense is on a par with mine, so we see a problem and work our way around it.
The only thing that i would advise against is, where you have put self-tapper screws, i would put nut and bolts.
Im not working at the moment, but at 64 years old, i only have 1 year and 9 months to go before retirement. Most of, if not all, of what you do is right in common sense, and mechanical knowledge!
MLS is a fallacy, that is what is known as trial and error! You have to dry run stuff before you actually build it, to make sure things work, and fit!
I have watched from the beginning all of your videos, and agree totally on the fact that you are a one man band, working, editing , shopping , real work, that brings the money in, and resurrecting stuff that we in the UK would only dream of running (Dude, for a start).
Im a firm believer in, if it works, keep it going! Most of your subscribers, if they leave, will come back to you, because they know what they get from your channel!
All the best in the future, Chris.
P.S. I don't normally message UA-cam entreprenours, as you have enough stuff on your plate dealing with normal shit messages from keyboard warriors telling you that you have done something or other wrong, but how many of them actually have a UA-cam channel which is bringing revenue in??

Awesome work watching this project come along. Love watching your videos. I’ve done a lot of wiring and the best advice I can give is use tesa tape to wrap the wires together. Works better and looks cleaner than plastic wire loom. I still use the loom in places. I’d probably wrap the wires with tesa tape going up through the a pillar and back. Awesome work.

Hey Chad, nice work. Someone might have mentioned it in the comments, but the white exciter wire to the alternator needs to have a diode wired in to that wire, or, an idiot light wired in series ( idiot light not grounded). This will block any back feed from the alternator into the electrical system. Oftentimes, back feed will not let you shut the car off.

I love wiring, maybe it's cos i started working on cars with late model everything's electronic stuff. The most important piece of advice i've ever been given for wiring and i follow to this day, is break it up into smaller diagrams (make your own) and start with the place with least wires ending with the most and make everything a connector.

I think if you swap the flasher wires it will correct the power issue. Signals should only work with key ON, emergency flashers should work with Key off or on. Looking good.

Put LED bulbs in your blinkers, all you need is a washer and the small LED lights

I think the reason your emergency flashers wouldn't work without the key being on is you have them swapped with the turn signals. Hazards need constant power, signals don't, they use keyed power. That might be part of the issue with that light being illuminated on the turn signal assembly. Swap flashers, see what happens. Just a thought, good luck buddy. Enjoy watching your videas.
