wow, chester's acting skills are as amazing as his singing skills...and that was one of the best clips of his i've seen...i thought it was a shot from a full length high production film...i really got to appreciate the guy's talent...i'd pay to watch his movies, if he were in any...yeah, i wonder why he isn't on tv or the theaters yet...
This was one of the most powerful and beautiful thing I have ever seen. really. I literally watched it two times and in every time it left me with an open mouth wondering what just happened. well done. I could not love it more then I do. I got no words.
He subconsciously creates people to talk to because he didn't have a lot of friends. He went crazy because he started realizing that they weren't real. Now, he talk to them but also knows they're not there. Imagine your best friends being there your whole life and then realizing you made them up the whole time. You still want to talk to them but you know they're not there, but you still talk to them as if they were. That's enough to drive anyone crazy.
I'd really love to see more about this... a movie based on this project would be seriously amazing, but anyway this was done incredibly... gonna watch it again!
This is an amazing clip. He (both the charater and the actor) is completly convincing that he is sane and that he has a grasp of reality until the very end. Plus he touches a very deep subject about the dead penalty, which is do we (as a sociaty) apply it as punishment, a solution to a problem or as a no rehabilitation situation. I rather think that its actually a mix of all those thing, but which one weights more i can't tell. This is more important than it can seem to be since as a punishment dead penalty might not be much of punishment, as a solution it might be seen as correct (if though of coldly) and as a no rehabilitation it can also be seen as correct, depending on who's analizing. To me personaly its hard to think that no case has a rehabilitation possible, as punishment it can have mixed results (the convict might not fear dying, plus does it really stop others from doing the same?) and as a solution its hard to detach myself that its still a persons life on the line. Also to note that i doubt that this evaluations are done in one session, although i have no experience in the matter. Still the script is brilliantly done and brilliantly acted. Well done.
When I watched this a year ago I failed to notice that Chester is putting his hand in his own shoulder imagining that it's someone else's. Well played, Chester!
this is just SO GOOD. still as good as the first time i watch this two years ago! watching, for the first time, #shutterisland yesterday made me this of this!!
The title alone says hes insane! Alienist... French aliéniste, from aliéné meaning INSANE, from Latin alienatus, past participle of alienare meaning to ESTRANGE from reality, from alienus...
I've come back and watched this probably 10 times and I think it gets better every time. I would venture to say that this is one of the best that is on youtube at least as far as drama goes.
At 3:20 Chester responds to a remark his imaginary pal says. If you take that remark away from the original recording, you hear what the observers heard. They heard Chester responding as if something was said when in actuality NOBODY said anything. They heard Chester say, "I don't feel insane." And then a few seconds late they heard him say, "...but by that definition, wouldn't that make everyone insane?" If I were the observer I'd be like, "Wait, what? Something's clearly not right here." But nope. It completely goes over their heads. 5:04 - Chester says, "Don't tell me to calm down" as if somebody told him to calm down when in reality NOBODY at any point told him to calm down - nobody who is ACTUALLY in the room, anyways. And yet the observers didn't take note of this. It seems they are more incompetent than the "insane" man they are observing. 6:28 - What the imaginary guy says is actually accurate. It IS obvious he's suffered some kind of dissociative break with reality or whatever, as evidenced by the fact that he keeps reacting and responding to stimuli that aren't actually present in the room. But the fact that they can't see it given what I've made clear previously proves they are exceptionally dimwitted and are in no condition to be conducting such an investigation of any man's sanity.
For 3:20, it's possible that Chester himself had said what the lawyer said. "I don't feel insane...but by it's very definition, an insane person doesn't know he's insane. But by that defintion, wouldn't that make everyone insane?" Same goes with Calm down, perhaps it's from one of the inspectors.
I don't think he's insane. I think he knows the lawyer isn't real, and simply imagined him out of loneliness. Hence why he says "there's nothing you could've done anyways." Think about it.
Carson McDonald There's the possibility (i say possibility because we don't really know) that he's schizophrenic however knows that he is imagining the lawyer etc. This is why he says that there's nothing he could have done. He is "insane" or "crazy" but he knows this. Also, when he says that he doesnt have any mental illness etc, it could be because he wants to die. He wants to get out of the hell it is to live with schizophrenia. Just a thought
OK, before I start this, I am about to say something I do not like to say at all. "WHAT THE F**** WAS THAT?" Why in the world aren't you acting? This makes me want to see more of this!!! I was completely bumfuzzled and now I have really come to appreciate you even more. I truly admire you muchisimo. And to those 355 people who do not like .... WHATEVER!! This is like America not liking the 20th Century Taylor Dayne = Anastacia- "You'll Never Be Alone", "Cowboys and Kisses", "One Day In Your Life", "Boom", "Paid My Dues", "LEft Outside Alone", and the list goes on and on... Also Chester, I would love for you to do "You'll Never Be Alone" and "Everything Burns" her ft. Ben Moody from the Fantastic 4 soundtrack. PLEASE. Thanks .. You have some mad skills, Bro!
1. They may have and due to his slander not cared and put him down for death anyway. 2. It's possible that they thought he was saying 'Don't tell me to calm down' pre-emptively, expecting them to tell him to calm.
It's their job to assess him properly, the point they were making in this vid is that they had already made up their minds and were just getting it over with.
I'd say part of the point was "reality" and "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone" And "cultural relativism" ie, "Why should we let another's obviously disastrously wrong moral code stay?"
okay i literally watched this skit like ages ago and was shocked af by it i started watching it again and i forgot how it ended just got shocked by it again SO GOOD SO SO GOOD also "don't tell me to calm down!!!" -- he was so obviously talking to the other guy...
AirUpThere14 did you delete your comment?? because now there's a "show comments removed as spam" option but your comment isnt there anymore o.O before there was only one of your comment though.... #youtubeglitches
***** Hahahah..Ohh well.My reply wouldn't appear the first time due to some "error" and it showed a "try again" option which I clicked on and it sent the reply, but I guess it sent it twice.
*Spoiler alert* Really liked this! Only thing that makes me twitch is a potential slip in the script where his schizophrenia could have been realized by the two persons asking him questions when he says "But by that definition..." (3:16 - 3:28). If you listen to just Chester talking and ignore what the imaginary man said, the two asking him questions should have thought "... what definition?" Nobody, but the imaginary man gave a definition. They could have asked him "What definition?" Chester would play as confused/irritated by the question and gesture towards to the imaginary man and say something like "The definition of insanity he literally just stated." The two would look where he's gesturing and see nobody, thus concluding his insanity after further questions regarding the imaginary man.
Anyone can gesture any direction to form themselves better to make any others believe that nothing is entirely wrong. How often do you ever find yourself where your eyes and posture differ than the direction it's usually supposed to be? If it's never, then I applaud you for being able to do that. But generally, most people end up turning a direction during a conversation while they run their responses. Due note, he didn't fully look towards his Lawyer. A small enough gesture towards the lady than him.
I understand what you're saying, but it wasn't that he made a gesture towards him that made me twitch, it was him saying "But by that definition..." when the only one who defined anything was his Lawyer. It wasn't what he did, it was what he said.
This is the best thing you've ever made, I mean I keep watching and re-watching it and every time I go to remove it from my fav list I just click on it to watch it.ONCE.AGAIN
From what I see, the old man protecting Chester can be interpreted as the general idea of protecting the insane from death penalties. Such idea, aptly represented by the nature of the old man, is imaginary. Flaws of one's thoughts, "insanity" being the extreme, can only be pointed out by thoughts of others. However, such thoughts may again be considered flawed, hence creating a paradox that makes any judgement invalid. The fact that "insanity" is subjective and only exists when being compared with other people itself shows that being able to label someone as "insane" is an irrational concept, let alone deciding on whether a death sentence should be carried. As rational as Chester may be while he explains this, irrationality/insanity is present in Chester shown by his hallucinations. Yet, his hallucinations are not detected by the Alienists; their judgement becomes invalid and flawed, pointed out by the thoughts of us as viewers who are able to last scene that the Alienists do not see. In the end, the protective mechanism to spare the "insane" from death fails to function in a rational and "sane" way. The fairness assumed in such system is indeed imaginary. Meanwhile, huge respect to this thought provoking 8-minute clip, not to mention Chester's incredible potential to be a great actor!
The interviewers saw that he was still in touch in reality when he committed the crime but due to being in prison and no cellmates to talk to he had created a figure to talk to which is his 'lawyer' (though he knows that its just his imagination because he said at the beginning that 'there's nothing you can do anyway'). Chester knew that the he is responsible for the crime committed and the 'lawyer' was just playing the part of being his defense mechanism. There's still a part of him who still hopes and that's the lawyer and chester being still rational doesn't succumb to the idea of the lawyer because if he succumbed that will make him truly insane (excessive use of the denial which in turn may lead to delusions)
He seriously deserves way more fame than he has he is way better than so many of the actors we have and he is definitely way better than so many of the singers we have!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!
i found a huge plot hole! when the lawyer talked about the definition of insanity, chester replied with "by THAT DEFINITION" and the psychiatrists didn't ask him what he meant by "that definition" so it indicates that the psychiatrists heard what the lawyer said about the definition of insanity
Lack of a reaction can't be taken as empirical evidence. So, there's nothing that indicate she heard him. However, on could imply that she did (which is what you did). However, there are many possible reasons as to why she might have ignored his phrasing: she considered it a parapraxis, she thought he was back-referencing the description of his current emotional state (confusion, fear, unawareness of insanity)...
Chester said by that definition that would make every one insane. The lawyer had said that would make him insane by saying that he wasn't insane. (Chester said he wasn't insane) and of coarse the psychiatrists heard what the lawyer and Chester said they were in the same room...so i guess i don't understand where the Plot Hole is...
karly paige wow u really don't understand what this video's about do u? the lawyer isn't real, he's just imagined by chester cause he's actually insane
Ikmal Rozlan Plot Twist: We're insane for thinking that the lawyer was just an imagination. At one point in the middle of Chester's rant he just screams out, "Don't tell me to calm down!" and they didn't question it at all. The one who told him to calm down was the lawyer. So either the video is simply making us question what's really happening or they just messed up.
When it comes to Chester, you don't know whether its a comedy or a music video. Then he turns it around and comes up with something so philosophical and brilliant. You don't know where he is going with his videos. Only that wherever he IS going, he'll get there. Keep up the good work!
Chester -- so talented. Great job. I love getting to see all this for free but I fear the day will come when I will have to pay for tickets to see you in concert and at the movies. Your star is rising!
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! What's awesome about that is it's not just well produced and casted, which is pretty common from hollywood and a few youtubers, it's brilliantly written. Bravo. Slow clap for you sir.
I watched this when it first came out and I just got assigned to analyze a piece of media. This is the first thing that came to my mind. It's so well done in every aspect, I love it!
That was fucking fantastic. Shit like this belongs in full fledged movies.
That belongs in a movie. One of the best monologues I have ever seen.

''You God damn right'' #Heisenberg

This and Crush the Skull are my two all my all time favorite videos on UA-cam. The plots are crazy awesome! I rewatch them again and again. :)
why hasn't chester's career taken off in a big way yet....😢😢😢
Not enough luck, I guess. But then again, he is able to earn a good living doing what he loves. He got more luck than most.
I think this totally redefines reality, amazing acting and story.
Totes agree!!!
Awesome job, Chester!! Had to go back through the video and I just couldn't stop watching!!
Every time I watch this I am so overwhelmed with how fantastic this is. Argh it would make a great movie
The end gave me the chillsss. Damn he is good, this was good, all is goodd
I don't understand the end. Chester was telling himself there was nothing he could do, and I don't understand why or anything

PLEASE MAKE A WHOLE MOVIE
Whoa!! I was amazed I thought Chester was just a singer but he is a flipping amazing actor too !! Should make a movie ♡

Still my favorite video on UA-cam to this day :)
Sometimes I come back to watch this video just to remind myself that I'm not as crazy as I think I am...
omg that was awesome. i actually think this couldve been a movie
totally! i was thinking the same thing!!
This was just awesome! I'm speachless!
That was amazing!!!
Whoa, plot twist!
2:50 gave me the chills
That was the best short film I've seen on a UA-cam account. Props for getting to the heart of an issue people don't pay enough attention to.
At 7:04, when Chester says “l know…” l was expecting the vid to finish with a “CHESTER KNOWS!”
Now that would’ve been funny
4:19 Chester Knows!
Speaks volumes about the American justice system. Whooooooooooo!
was just about to say that...
THAT WAS DEEP, BRO!! No but like seriously, this is just amazingly clever and the end, irony just like slapped me in the face
Chester!! this was absolutely AMAZING! you kind of reminded me of Moriarty for Sherlock in this. well done! 😊👏🏼👏🏼
The title alone says hes insane! Alienist... French aliéniste, from aliéné meaning INSANE, from Latin alienatus, past participle of alienare meaning to ESTRANGE from reality, from alienus...
Yes because everyone knows their French and Latin roots. How fucking obvious.
Holy wow!...Damn. Good job, man.
I've come back and watched this probably 10 times and I think it gets better every time. I would venture to say that this is one of the best that is on youtube at least as far as drama goes.
that was soo gd !!! so he was insane !x

I don't think he's insane. I think he knows the lawyer isn't real, and simply imagined him out of loneliness. Hence why he says "there's nothing you could've done anyways." Think about it.
biggest plot twist
He maybe wasnt insane of knowing that. But he's insane of acting like it exists
I think he is really insane but know how to talk right.
Carson McDonald There's the possibility (i say possibility because we don't really know) that he's schizophrenic however knows that he is imagining the lawyer etc. This is why he says that there's nothing he could have done. He interacted with the lawyer serveral times in a quite visceral reaction; like when he screams "Don't tell me to clam down!"
This is honestly, in my opinion, one of the best pieces of cinematography I have ever had the pleasure of watching and re-watching.
OK, before I start this, I am about to say something I do not like to say at all. "WHAT

If that bold guy only was imagine how could he close the door? or drag the chair forward? D:
They had to take some liberties to make it work or people would have guessed it immediately.
The chair was imaginary? So the image that he and not a police man closed the door xD?
When it comes to Chester, you don't know whether its a comedy or a music video. Then he turns it around and comes up with something so philosophical and brilliant. You don't know where he is going with his videos. Only that wherever he IS going, he'll get there. Keep up the good work!
this... is so incredible. the acting, the story line itself, the twist. the way the pieces fall together so perfectly.. this is so amazing.
This is what originality is all about; short, yet twisted! FAVORITE VIDEO EVER.
This was my first favourite video in my fave box! This really needs to win an award! it has a really strong message!!

This should really be made into a TV show! It was amazing and I'd watch the show all the time!
I watched this when it first came out and I just got assigned to analyze a piece of media. This is the first thing that came to my mind. It's so well done in every aspect, I love it!
