Social shyness is a huge barrier for me in joining meetup groups - I can't do small talk, and hence don't do well with strangers. Great topic - really miss you on Game All Night!
These kind of groups are usually very inclusive and conversations are centered around a passion that unites us all, so I think even without small talk you won’t be out of touch. You don’t have to talk a lot too, as the most experienced players will take a lot of place in discussions, until you become that person one day! Pick up the courage to show up once and nobody will judge you if you end up not liking it and leave! :) there’s no really worst case scenario there
Great tips! My Meetup group led to me finally making friends after moving to a new area and I encourage anyone out there who's curious-but-cautious to listen to tip #4 already!
Watched your other video about joining game groups and found it helpful, especially with meetup. I've since joined a couple of local meetups thanks to you. Keep up the good work
I've been to a couple conventions, most recently a local one with one a small number of people but it was great. Seeing the same faces for three days in a row made it more intimate and was a great setting to play in. Thinking about starting my own meet up for the summer which is why I watched the video in the first place. Great tips!
I'm pretty much an introvert so the idea of joining a meetup group kinda scares me. If ever i do pull the trigger there, I'm sure these tips will come in handy. :)
Great video, Gary! I've been part of my weekly group for almost three years and it's been awesome connecting with people (now friends) who share my passion for board gaming. As you said, I think it's important to 1) just get out and go, especially more than once, since game group dynamics can change from week to week and 2) be open to playing others' games. I've been fortunate that most of my group makes an effort to play each others' games. We all bring a few each week and most of us get at least one of our games played.
I went to my first board game night last week, really enjoyed it but definitely agreed with what you said about having different lengths of games. Thanks for the video!
My first experience at a meetup went great and it gave me an opportunity to try the different kind of games, instead of just the one type I was used to.
Being open to games that I personally didn't prefer definitely helped in just meeting people that I would eventually play the games I really wanted to play down the line.
Totally agree with the yes person tip. You have got to be willing to play other people's games and understand that this isn't the only chance to play a game, there will more games and meet ups in the future
I was trying to play to play board games with friends that I played D&D with. They were to focused on other things, it just never worked out. I played games with family members and some just didn't want to play, rather just sit around and talk. My sister in law, shout out to Gina, suggested Meetup. I was glad there was a Meetup group close to my area, well half an hour where I live. The Dice Tower was also invading Connecticut that same night at the store called The Portal. Where the Meetup was held. The folks at the store are friendly and play so many games of all type. I go every other Thursday, due to work schedule. I'm glad I'am part of the group.
Yes, I stepped into the Portal. The description also states "Cake not included (unless you want to bring some ^_^)". So I brought Stop & Shop cookies. Nobody ate. I forgot the "cake is a lie" quote. LOL
My SO and I just got to board gaming recently and are still learning the ropes. I’m watching a lot of videos and am friends with another couple that are already deep into the games, so we learn a lot from our meetups. We’re fortunate for that. Personnally, I picked up a couple of DnD/Pathfinder podcasts over the last few years and found the whole concept very fascinating, but my complete inexperience prevents me from wanting to burden a stranger’s group, especially if I end up not liking our chemistry, it kind of scares me a bit. I just wish my closer friends were into that so I could try it out. I must say the time investment needed is pretty worrying to me too!
Do what my friend does and go out to board game nights for the sole purpose of finding ppl for personal things like private game nights and DnD sessions. You can get a decent grasp of how people are after a couple games to attempt inviting them out
I move around a lot for work and meetups have allowed me to keep playing regularly wherever I go. I agree about not letting one or two experiences turn you off, it took me almost a year to meet my main gamer group simply because we didn't go to the same events.
Lived in my area for a year and a half and havent really organically met anyone in to board games or tabletop stuff. Definitely should go to a meet up and finally find some people in to the same things I am.
I've yet to join a meetup but am hoping to do so in the near future. I have a decent play group with family/friends but they occasionally all stop playing so I think that's when I'll try branching out in the future. Thanks for the encouragement :)
I liked the one meetup I went to. Was open to play stuff, others were open to teach, but get there on time! If you show up late, you will most likely be stuck out b/c everyone already waist deep in a game.
Messaging the people beforehand helps way more than you can imagine. It's one of the reasons why I got active, and why I try to create conversations before every event to have newbies more likely to jump in the conversation.
I actually had an experience that backs up point 4. I went to a game night with some friends of my family and they played trivia games all night. I got invited again, and I almost said no because I didn't want another trivia night. Turned out, some of the players like modern games, and it was an off night when they did all trivia. Had a great time, and would have missed out if I hadn't gone.
Lol you are a better person than me, if I walked into a trivia night I would not have thought in a million years that they were also into modern games (even though I go out for trivia nights lol...but that's besides the point)
I've had similar experiences with Meetup groups -- made some great friends even though it took a few sessions to click. Thanks for the helpful and entertaining vids!
One more hint to those considering going to a Meetup event -- try joining several different meetup groups for different topics. Either you'll see some familiar faces, and can make conversation about how you have not just one but two or more common interests, or you'll see different people, and can decide if you prefer the dynamics of one group over another. But as those can change depending on which subset of members show up, definitely give them all multiple chances, unless they're strongly led by an individual whose personality doesn't fit what you're looking for. (In which case, there's probably another group for the same subject that you'll feel more comfortable with!) Watching how others lead successful gatherings will be helpful for you when you eventually start your own meetup, too!
I did not regret my first meet up as it was a friendly local game store that just opened up. Met new people. Shame it had to close though and life got in the way and I do not see them any more.
Late To The Table I really lik ed the scene transitions from outside to inside, it kept it visually interesting. I also had an audible laugh during the tony the tiger stuff.
One caveat here about Meetup: because many men use Meetup groups as a way finding women for dating (Meetup groups are NOT actual dating groups) they can get dropped from any group if there are complaints. It seems most women who attend the events don't want to be hit on by strange men nor do they want to get messages from men they haven't met.
My first meetup was kind of neat, even though when I left it, my girlfriend and I were the youngest people there. It was neat to introduce people to a different world of board gaming, and I even met someone from BGG there! It was neat to watch as some went from non-gamer to gamer and I sorely miss 2 of the couples there. My first time there was similar to what you said. The host of the group wasn't there that week (she sent her boyfriend as she had something to do and had to bail) and we had only one other person there. In the end, it just got better with every visit.
The funny thing is, when I moved a bit north, I couldn't attend my first meetup group anymore. Which may have been a good thing as the group dynamic changed, as well as the selection of what was being played. The new meetup group I found a few months later, were made up of late 20 to mid 30 somethings. So my girlfriend and I ended up being the OLDEST people in the newer group. :-/ Fun was still had either way. Both groups actually met up in bar like locations - Old group met up in a place that sold craft beers, new group met up in a brewery)
Spoiler Alert: But I was so soured from my experiences in this video, that I ended up hosting my own game night for months before giving another night a shot. Luckily I ran it within the Meetup group so I didn't abandon it completely lol
So.. I never pulled the trigger to go but tonight there's one. Do you just go to a group of people who are already playing and ask if you can watch? If you get there and there's nobody playing yet what do you do?
Thank you, Pope sensei. I definitely should check out the local comic book shop because they have a giant table that people use for board games/Warhammer 40k.
It's hard for me to go to meetups, partly because I don't like meeting new people, and partly because it's tough to go anywhere on weeknights since I don't have much "free time" between work and sleep. I went a couple times to a meetup that's at my work, but now that I take the shuttle, and the last one leaves at 7, I can't really go to that meetup either.
That suckssssssss, this idea doesn't work for everyone but if you join a Meetup you can ask the people in charge if you can host a game night at your place that will work with your schedule. After those 2 bad meetups, I actually did that myself for like 5 months before I tried going out again lol.
That's a good idea. We were actually thinking of starting a meetup in our city on a weeknight that works for us, but just haven't gotten around to planning it!
Great ideas! I am curious about your tips for hosting a great meetup. When a large group shows up we get stuck playing party games because people don't want to split the group to have 2 games going at once.
For myself personally it was simply that people were not comfortable without me (the host) acting as the glue for the group. Find large group games that you can enjoy and eventually they wont mind breaking up once they are more comfortable. 7 Wonders Room 25: Ultimate Edition Rising Sun Codenames Red Planet Dark Moon Game of Thrones: The board game And any other 6+ player long game works well.
Lorex888 hi hon,☺️ so much for all your help and support you have to have quality time your available to have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New year to
THOR! What a beauty. Also, those slow-mo dice rolls.. I'll take credit for the inspiration of that ;) Re: meetups, I joined a local meetup.com group months ago and have yet to be available to make it out to join the group! Shame shame. Edit: If my memory serves me correctly, I think I saw a r/boardgames thread from you about meetup.com which led to me searching out and finding my local group. Thanks Gary!
I really enjoyed this video! I’ve just started getting into this hobby and I don’t have all the money to buy a ton of games just to try. Do you find that gaming groups get annoyed with teaching a game to a new person?
Hello! Thanks for the great video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially agree with the piece of advice that one should visit a meet-up more than once at least. So now that that's out of the way, I'd like to point out that unfortunately, Gary, you have been mistaken! I was excited and suspicious when you were holding the box of this game called Mask of Moai and saying "a VR game from South Korea if I'm not mistaken." I'm South Korean myself and I could see the characters on the box were all Japanese. So I went to BGG to check things out and it seems that you were confused because one of the publishers listed on BGG is Card Castle, which seems a Korean company. But since it was designed by a Japanese designer, illustrated by Japanese artists and the original publisher seems a Japanese company, I think it's safe to say it's from Japan rather than South Korea. I'd say this was a terrible mistake on your part, especially considering the fact that your dear friend/arch-nemesis Christian Kang is Korean-American, who I have no doubt is just as offended as I am. Christian, my Korean board game superhero! I need your help to punish Gary for this dire mistake! Help!! X-D
I'm sorry about that! Speaking of Christian I brought up that game last night while we were playing Star Realms and he pointed it out to me as well. And because I recorded this video like a week or so ago I forgot to edit in that it was in fact Japanese. I did not mean to offend anyone, and I'm pretty sure that the reason I thought it was Korean was around the same time I was actually ordering a few other foreign games from the area and assumed it was as well.
People should always support the venues. Especially if they become regulate. Deadbeats are the worst. Also, Meetup costs money so it is nice to give something to the organizer if they don't charge anything.
Great tips! Especially the one about destroying your opponents at these meetups. That usually keeps them on their toes and wanting to play you again. #teamgroinkickgotrobbed #chairfart
I made a little video like a year ago on how to find more players. But to keep players is a whole nother story. 1. Dont be a dick 2. Put others before your interest 3. Rinse wash and repeat for like a year lol Id also just suggest joing the other group and running your own nights.
I definitely get this. The problem I had is that I started to make a friend there, and the guy turned out to be kind of... Well he was kind of sexist. He started arranging the female heroes of the LOTR LCG into hot and not hot the second the game hit the table. He'd made some awkward comments before that, but I figured it was just him being awkward.. I stopped going because I didn't want to see him.. Also, those games look pretty sweet!
Late To The Table sadly he is. It was so awkward because he literally just said "hot" or "ugly" as he made 2 piles. It was kind of surreal. We had showed up early so no one was around. Other people in the group were pretty chill though! I'm just a quiet type so I have trouble making boundaries lol I'll have to get back out there. There are also other meetups that I've been too nervous about going to, but your video reminded me that there are always setbacks! Can't hurt to keep trying :)
Note: I forgot to mention I'll cover only the first $20 of shipping if someone wins overseas!
Great video my Friend.
I still have to work on my shyness before I do my first meet-up, but videos like yours are pushing me to go and try. Thanks for the advices
Social shyness is a huge barrier for me in joining meetup groups - I can't do small talk, and hence don't do well with strangers.

Oh wow that was like one of my first videos from over a year ago, glad it helped a ton!
I've been to a couple conventions, most recently a local one with one a small number of people but it was great. Seeing the same faces for three days in a row made it more intimate and was a great setting to play in. I love the positivity of this video. I rarely play with people I don't already know but this video is encouragement to branch out more.
Solid Advice! Found this channel through a reddit post. Thanks for being a positive member of the greater board game community! Best of luck to you!
Love your videos. Good tips. 4 is very important. I find myself placing meetups on my calendar but not making the time to actually go. Thanks again.
I'm pretty much an introvert so the idea of joining a meetup group kinda scares me. If ever i do pull the trigger there, I'm sure these tips will come in handy. :)

Really enjoyed the editing and style of the video. Talking about going to a meetup while going to a meetup is a neat idea.
Thanks! It was actually the 2nd time that I recorded the video and I figured doing that was a million times more interesting lok

I'm so envious, i used to have a travel job and didn't knoe abouy Meetup at the time lol. Way too many night just bored in a hotel lol
Meetup groups are a great way to find people to connect with to do smaller scale board game events.
Great tips. I agree; it can take a few tries before you find a good experience at a boardgame meetup.
Great video Gary again. Really helpful advice for those starting out and establishing their own gaming group.

I've been going to a meetup for the past few months and really enjoyed it! Great video :)
Great tips on the meetup group. I have been going to one bi weekly and have loved the people and games I have played.
Love almost all my meetups! So many people, so many games. I go at least twice a week and I organize my own private ones too.
I actually had an experience that backs up point 4. I went to a game night with some friends of my family and they played trivia games all night. Nice video! I've been thinking about heading to a local meetup and I might just try it out now
I've had similar experiences with Meetup groups -- made some great friends even though it took a few sessions to click. Thanks for the helpful and entertaining vids!
Yeah taking a few sessions is pretty key lol. I run into too many people that only give it 1-2 tries before quitting and it sucks to witness that.
One more hint to those considering going to a Meetup event -- try joining several different meetup groups for different topics. Either you'll see some familiar faces, and can make conversation about how you have not just one but two or more common interests, or you'll see different people, and can decide if you prefer the dynamics of one group over another. Insightful and helpful that this video popped up as I am heading to a meet up tonight. Wish me luck.
Ohhhhhh let me know how it went!!
Late To The Table there was some growing pains but optimistic about going back for sure
Digging these videos! I've got a gaming group but they don't want to play quite as much as me, maybe I'll look into finding a meetup sometime.
Whoa Gary, the editing and style were great on this video, you really kicked it up a notch!
Thanks that means alot! I moved recently so my old setup is non-existent for a while so I decided to mix it up lol
Late To The Table I really lik ed the scene transitions from outside to inside, it kept it visually interesting. I also had an audible laugh during the tony the tiger stuff.
Good tips. Definitely the best thing to do is to actually go and get involved.
Thanks for the tips! It can definitely be tough to build up the courage to join a new group.
Did we learn nothing from the Lion in Wizard of Oz?! Lol but yeah you just gotta dive in head first and hope for the best.
Another great video! There is a huge local meet up every week in my town. I never go and really need to try it out.
You should definitely give them a chance! You never know what can come from it.
Saw your post on reddit. I like the channel so far.
This was really helpful since i just made a meet up account. I was wondering what the typical meet up etiquette was so thanks for the guidance
Glad it helped!
Something that helped my own group get younger players was hosting bar nights! Most people over 35 don't want to deal with the noise lol
Fun was still had either way. Both groups actually met up in bar like locations - Old group met up in a place that sold craft beers, new group met up in a brewery)
Was just thinking about going to my first meet up tonight! It's reassuring to know if I have a bad experience, not to be soured by it.
Three hours of indecision must be a record. Excellent tips, ggggrrrrreeeeaaatt! video.
I wish I made up the story or was exaggerating...but yeah....3 full hours lmao
Thank you, Pope sensei. I definitely should check out the local comic book shop because they have a giant table that people use for board games/Warhammer 40k.
Thanks for the tips. That last tip is great lol if you don't go, it's not gonna happen
It's hard for me to go to meetups, partly because I don't like meeting new people, and partly because it's tough to go anywhere on weeknights since I don't have much "free time" between work and sleep. 7 Wonders
Room 25: Ultimate Edition
Rising Sun
Codenames
Red Planet
Dark Moon
Game of Thrones: The board game
And any other 6+ player long game works well.
I guess I'm lucky. The first ever meetup I attended was great, and is now my weekly game group.
Its not bad for everyone but as an organizer I try my best to not have people go through what I did lol. It still happens but no one is perfect lol
Lorex888 hi hon,☺️ so much for all your help and support you have to have quality time your available to have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New year to
I'll be hitting up a meetup this weekend. These are great tips and well timed for me. Thanks!!!
Went to one meet up before. Think I'll try it again!
Thanks for the tips! Too bad the meetup near my house is on a night that I work...blah. Keep up the great vids!
Still have never made it to a meetup but thanks for the tips. Might sack up and try this week!
Great video Gary. Hopefully I will get the courage to go to a few meetups soon.
Good video. Thank you. I really like games and I don't get play as often as I would like. I think I will try this.
Signed up to join my first ever board game Meetup after watching this video. Thanks for the positive tips! 😀
THOR! What a beauty. Also, those slow-mo dice rolls.. I'll take credit for the inspiration of that ;)
Re: meetups, I joined a local meetup.com group months ago and have yet to be available to make it out to join the group! Shame shame.
Edit: If my memory serves me correctly, I think I saw a r/boardgames thread from you about meetup.com which led to me searching out and finding my local group. Thanks Gary!
I....AM....EVERYWHERE!
Good tips. I’d really like to get more into board games but I can’t find any friends that are into them.
You should definitely try them out! It was probably the best decision I made in 2016
I really enjoyed this video! I’ve just started getting into this hobby and I don’t have all the money to buy a ton of games just to try. Do you find that gaming groups get annoyed with teaching a game to a new person?

Hope you keep making more awesome videos!
Enjoyed the video! Definitely agree with number 4
I like the different places you shoot this video :)
Great tips, I really need to go out and find a group.
People should always support the venues. Especially if they become regulate. Deadbeats are the worst. Also, Meetup costs money so it is nice to give something to the organizer if they don't charge anything.
As someone who now runs one you are one of my favorite types of members lmao
I might start my own meetup at my local library and see how it goes... a bit nervous...
A friend of mine The Boardgame Librarian from Dice Tower Board Game Breakfast does it and its an awesome event every time. I say go for it!
I wish I had attended a meeting years earlier than I did.
Great tips! Especially the one about destroying your opponents at these meetups. That usually keeps them on their toes and wanting to play you again.

I see you managed to find the hidden tips sprinkled throughout the video.
I had good luck at a local bars board game night.
Bar nights are some of my favorite kind of events
Nice vid! There only seems to be one meetup group in my area. Any tips for starting a group?
I made a little video like a year ago on how to find more players. But to keep players is a whole nother story.
1. Dont be a dick
2. Put others before your interest
3. Rinse wash and repeat for like a year lol
Id also just suggest joing the other group and running your own nights.
Nice video with great tips!
Video starts at 2:40
I love meetup! You gave great tips!
i want to try a local group, but i am too painfully shy to put myself out there
Messaging beforehand is by far the most helpful thing you can do!
Great video dude! Keep it up!
Oh man, that's an instant boot in my group. We just have been lucky to not get weirdos like that as far as I'm aware. Hopefully he isnt a regular lol
Great list!
i finally figured out the name of your channel Gary Pope! lol took me a little while... totally me though. love the end montage :)
So I know local locations definitely matter too
