      My husband and I planted 12 potato plants in a raised bed, we’ve been harvesting them as needed since mid June. Every week I dig up one plant and we get about 10 baby potatoes which diced and roasted is the perfect amount as a side dish with a little handful leftover for lunch the next day. It’s so fun to dig for them

    The reason your experiment didn't work well is probably that you planted the potato pieces right after cutting them. You have to let your potato pieces dry until the cut part has gone kind of gray and dry. Otherwise your potatoes will rot in the damp soil.
    Response to some who disagree, and that's ok.
    I guess it depends on how humid a climate you have where you live.

    One year we planted potatoes and covered them with hay. As the plants grew, we added more hay. We added hay several times as the plants matured.
    When it came time to harvest them, we just raked back the hay. We didn't have to dig the potatoes because they were just beneath the hay. It was the easiest harvest we ever had! The hay also served as mulch as it covered the entire area around the potatoes.🥔
    It's great when you try something and it works! Using sprouted potatoes is a great way to start a crop! You ended up with some nice potatoes and the sprouted potatoes weren't a loss! 😘

    I set my potatoes cut side down on several layers of newpaper put on top of my mounded dirt bed. Then covered all with straw. Kept adding straw on top as leaves got taller to support them. Waited til leaves collapsed then harvested the cleanest potatoes I ever saw. Yukon Gold and Red potatoes, both organic so no pesticides to inhibit growth.

  • @joesqudy
    @joesqudy Рік тому +5

    If you’re covering the leaves entirely, it may kill the plant. I don’t recommend that.😊 and there’s no need to layer because the stems will find their way out of the soil. Great job saving the potato. 😃

    We planted 50 potatoes into raised beds this year. Seems they weren't raised enough. The foxes and badgers dug up most and I doubt we got 5lbs of tubers out of the whole lot. Last year we planted 20 tubers and the resulting harvest saved us having to buy any for about 10 weeks. The creatures have watched and learned, but so have we. Next year our crops will be better protected.

    I bought some "gourmet" baby potatoes that I had set down in a storage room and then forgot about them. They were SHRIVELED when I found them again. Rather than throw them away or compost them, I planted the unceremoniously into my garden. I started with maybe ten tiny, dried up potatoes no bigger than a flat decorative glass blob like you get from Hobby Lobby, and ended up with probably 7-10 pounds of small, perfect, baby potatoes that were pretty good sized. I loved them! Having some more tonight for dinner, cut and roasted with baby carrots and onions, doused in olive oil and delicious herbs. 😋🤤😍

      That’s actually pretty dope! Around where I live a raccoon, possum, or some other wild creature would have eaten that but what a great way to learn about gardening 😊

    You'd have gotten more potatoes (and even bigger ones) if you hadn't burried them so low in the basket. Remember they're root bulbs, which means the more deep the roots go the more potatoes you'll have.
    What you should've done is first fill the basket with soil (all the way to the top), then plant the potato pieces. That would've allowed the potato to go down more into the soil and you'll have to add little soil from the top.
    Remember, there should at least be a foot deep soil below where you plant your potato.
