Exactly 💯. Till this day it hurts whenever reactors react to it and give credits to other members for that triple high notes and Army's are the ones trying to correct them.
A little behind story of why ARMY are so salty about the Ellen Show having too many shots of the audience: There was a big controversy at the time, because tons and tons of ARMY were lining up all day to be in that audience, a diverse group of people of different ages, genders etc. as you might expect. But apparently (according to multiple accounts) the Ellen Show staff walked down the line and picked out specific fans they wanted put at the front, and prioritised who was even allowed in to the show. All the people they picked were the youngest, prettiest teenage girls, and anyone who didn't fit that description was left out. People were understandably furious! It was a huge drama on twt for days. Not only did loyal fans get shut out, and people were discriminated against based on looks, but the show clearly did that because they wanted to portray a certain image of fans as only being excitable young girls. Of course the girls who got picked weren't at fault, so I don't want us to look back negatively at them. I'm sure they were having the time of their lives! But that's why that particular performance gained this very bad reputation with ARMY. I actually was just watching that performance a while ago and found one of my old comments from the time, with a thread of replies, and it reminded me of the whole issue 😅
She's just a bad person in general... There have been multiple guests who've been mistreated by that woman including the stuff that makes her, her money.
I think that it was plain SABOTAGE. Nothing else. BTS was superior even in 2014 and so cold big 3 were trying to stop them from gaining new fans ruining their hard work.
I'm glad you had a "JAIL" category, because some of that camera work was definitely criminal! That last one is one of my favourite performances, but I've never seen it from the event - only the BTS recorded versions, and I had no idea why they recorded it three times. Thanks for the back story! When BTS works so hard at their choreography, it needs to be shown and appreciated properly. Thanks for this!
The mbc gayo one is iconic. Imagine bh staffs calling everyone just so they can film the performance again type of petty. I honestly dont expect anyone other than BH or some cameramen to shot a great shot of their performances. I honestly believe thats why they came up with dance practice videos.
As soon as I saw this title all I could think of the was BTS' Fake Love performance at the billboard music awards where the camera missed JK's ab flash.
the fact that bts uploaded the danger choreo on yt so that we can see it nicely shows how hardworking and damn savage they are... they taught those bs cameramen well!!! THATS WY WE STAN BTS!
I clicked on this so fast. Camerawork and the super dark lighting is the bane of my existence especially on award shows. My other issue with Idol 2019 is that they pulled back to a wide shot just in time for the high kick that happens towards the end. It’s a big choreo moment that was completely missed.
Am I the only one that gets nauseated by pretty much all of the Inkigayo performances? The unhinged camera work messes with my eyes/equilibrium to the point that it really does make me feel physically sick. And yes I can understand the thought process of wanting to get audience reaction shots but I couldn't care less about seeing the audience in these videos, I want to see BTS...that's supposed to be the point.
Inkigayo 2017 was a definite “JAIL” entry for me. If I can’t even look at the screen for fear of a migraine or nausea, then that’s jail-worthy camerawork!
Yes I definitely notice! Especially when a main part of the choreography is cut off just to show the crowd. Sometimes I feel like less is more, I don’t need the crazy zoom ins all the time.
OK! Adding in the "Anpanman" and "Fake Love" performance at the 2018 Mamas in Japan! There were weird shots in the Anpanman performance and it was so frustrating to just see a member barely walking by then a switch to an empty stage then back to the members. There were also the weird zoom in and zoom outs. For "Fake Love" specifically, it's the first of I think 2 times they performed the "Fake Love" Marionette dance break, and for 2018 it was completely in the dark. It was so dark we could barely see it. But I think that might be more a lighting issue than a camera one.
I just wanted to mention this too, the fake love marionette dance is so good and creative but you couldn't see it. Also on the iconic 2019 MMA J-Hopes solo dance... thanks to BigHit for uploading the dance practice otherwise we wouldn't know what a world class dancing that was.
Exactly! Fake Love 2018 MAMA Japan is always top of mind for me. Only two official videos available: Mnet's, which cuts away from choreo so many times, including the peak of the dance break (?!) and BTS' Bangtan Bomb which has a nice steady shot but awful sound (and it's missing the staging). It frustrated me so much I edited the two vids together, it's here ua-cam.com/video/MZzFqPF8OIc/v-deo.html. But it never shows up on search because it's an inactive channel. 🥲 Not much I could do about the darkness but I tried to brighten it as much as possible without ruining it.
2 pieces of camerawork that pisses me of is Jin's tripple high note at their concert in Japan and the camera angles at their performance of Tricky at some award show way back when, thank god for a fancam we actually got to see Jin's iconic high notes in Crystal Snow but that Tricky choreo, what the hell was wrong with that cameraman
@@boracitymagazine I was eating dinner while watching this and the Inkigayo clips literally made me feel nauseous. Terrible. I was still a fetus Army during JKs Seven promotions but I remember his performance there as the worst I had seen. Just let the performance speak for itself, less is more when it comes to good camera work in my opinion.
OMG I love this! Yes, I do notice bad camerawork (background with dance, when the choreo or stage blocking isn't filmed properly it distracts me SO badly). And actually the moment I immediately thought of isn't here! The Music Bank performance of "Am I Wrong?" - on that ICONIC high note and spin to wave move that Jimin does, the camera CUTS AWAY FROM HIM to just randomly film Jungkook!!! I love Kookie as much as the next ARMY, but I remember when I first watched it I just yelled at the computer like "WAIT WHAT? WTFRICK CAMERA WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" 🤣 You have to go see it!
I can't remember which shows it was, but I remember JK saying that only one show filmed the hat illusion move that they do in We Are Bulletproof Pt.1 right, the rest of them filmed it from a side angle so it looked weird. He specifically thanked the one show who did it right.
I know I’ve yelled at the camera shots when I see Bulletproof Pt1! WHY film that from the side? I’m sure they were told or saw them rehearsing to know to get the shot from the front…… can only think it was deliberate at that point. But I loved BTS showing how the choreography SHOULD be filmed afterwards….
Bora, because of you, now watching BTS performance on UA-cam, I can’t stop focusing on the camerawork.😅 On the other hand, now i can appreciate good camerawork 😂🎉
Yes! Sometimes Fan-Cams gave a better overviews than the actual performance video. And I am so glad there are a lot of BangtanTV Uploads with better versions from their own staff. I am glad it got better and better over the years.
I remember so many of these moments!! Honestly I would put most audience shots in the "jail" category for the reasons you mention, but also because they take away from me seeing BTS XDDD It's crazy to see what incredible performers BTS are, specially when facing so many drawbacks, like small or poorly maintained stages, bad camera work, etc. Great video!
When they filmed hobi digging for gold during Hangsang at his lollapalooza performance could be included in both the jail or the kind of iconic tiers 😂😂
OMGosh, I've never seen the 2014 performance and only the one that BTS prepared. I had NO IDEA that is why that video was created, lol. I love the "subtle" shade! Your list was absolutely accurate. I also have trouble with American award show camerawork. I really don't want to see the audience unless THEY are doing something iconic otherwise it's a waste of film. I appreciate your videos as always.
I haven’t started the video yet, but I’m STILL salty about j-hope’s live Arson performance on that awards show. Such an amazing stage and iconic performance, probably my favorite, and the camera ZOOMS OUT on the dance break where you don’t even see him!!!
oh yes and was pointed at the gas bottle that was supplying the fuel for the fire. yep I don't know what happened did the camera person faint or something.
The cameramen falling over at YTC was iconic to me, it was so funny and made me feel it was really live. Argee with all your other choices though, especially the jail tier. I guess this is also the reason that the boys are now more involved in choosing the camera angles, like we can see in the bangtan episode of hobi's 2022 mama performance. They have really learned how angle's work the best and they make sure their performances are well captured.
I actually had a problem with another part of the 2018 IDOL performance. I remember being irked when they were coming up on the very intense and challenging choreography on the lifted platform and, just at that moment, the camera went to a super wide one where you could barely see them would start to zoom in and then back out again.
I just found your videos few days ago and been streaming one by one everyday. When I saw this video posted just 2 hours ago, I don’t know why I feel excited. I love all (just a few more to finish watching all of the it) your videos. I’d say your analytical views and opinions made me assumed that you are a mature and older (maybe not older (by comparison with a 20 something fan)) fan. I’m a 44 yo baby army of 1 year and 3 months old. That Danger camera work is definitely the worst of them all! And I too do like it when the camera takes a reasonable amount of shots of the audience. If “reasonable amount” is too subjective, then just take 3 “good timing” shots.
I totally agree with your assessment. I'm still pist off about the way the American cameras shot their performances. Thankfully, they've learned how to shoot BTS and their Grammy performance was perfect.
I admit, I get the teensiest bit pissed off whenever they cut away from that iconic moment at the end of "Fire." In my opinion, that should always be shot head on with Jimin focused in the center until that sequence is finished and THEN it can cut away. Same with the final dance break in "Idol" again, with Jimin in the center. Both of those are such iconic choreographies.
Excellent summarization. Your "jail" category had me screaming POLICE during each video snippet and explanation 🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Bora...you should be covering BTS as an on location correspondent every time they are out. Please apply to work at HYBE/BigHit
This is so funny-there were some Inkigayo performances where the camerawork gave me motion sickness. 😅 SO bad and truly unwatchable. Thanks for this analysis, because truly, some of the camerawork really pissed me off over the years!
Great video as usual, thank you so much! I would like to add a big WHY to why they film performances upfront when there is a big pixeled LED screen behind the members. The footage will always get blurry so why do it on Sowoozoo, Fanmeetings, or Musters where they can prevent this from happening??? It really disturbed me a lot.
You're videos are always fantastic! As a younger ARMY, I had heard about the bad filming at the gayo daejeon 2014 but I have never heard the whole run down and I didn't realize BTS posted three different videos. Thanks for making this and sharing this part of BTS's history 💜
I immediately thought of the huge wide shot at the end of the 2018 MMAs. The beginning of that show is so stinking good but then they pull out way too wide and you can't see the dancing at the end of the performance, and Idol has some of my favorite choreography that BTS has ever done too
YES! DNA AT THE AMAS! I WAS SO MAD!!!! BUT NOT AS MAD AS I WAS AT THE BBMAs 2018! It was the FIRST PERFORMANCE EVER! And we couldn't see the choreography at all! I WAS SO MAD! And that stupid girl was at both concerts like wtf!?
As an SNL ARMY, I totally agree with you. I went on a “hey, they are amazing! Who knew? I wanna know more! What are their names again?” UA-cam binge & emerged literally FOUR hours later a fan. Thank god it was a weekend, cause I seriously lost track of time watching MV after MV, explanation videos & etc. bad camera work or not, that 2019 SNL performance will always be iconic to me.
Hi Bora ! Hi Bora sister...this is epic...i love the "jail" category...omg i nearly fell off my chair laughing when u expained this category...yup the cameraman has to go to jail...😂😂😂😂. Also, tq for the back story abt BTS having 3 videos with also having hillarious titles...😅😅😅 Love your analytic styles and please continue....take care Apobangpo 💜
Former live event stage manager here - oh hell yes I notice when the the camerawork is off. I wince at the missed throw from JK in that otherwise amazing performance of Idol every time I see it. And I was watching the 2018 Billboard performance and losing my mind that I couldn't see THEM. You could tell the production team were just surprised anyone knew who they were! Inkigayo makes me nauseous, it's utterly unwatchable and lazy. I knew that famously messed up Danger would be on your list. Those bad Korean TV shows just look like they are trying to undermine them, and the bad American TV shows are just arrogant and xenophobic.
I hate when they do wide shots excessively and you can't see the artist performance like I don’t want to see the whole stage and crowd 100 times within 5 seconds. I agree with fliming the crowd when they are having fun or singing along for a fews shots. When it is too excessive I think "I want to see bts not the fans"
My guess for inkigayo is that they are using all of these crazy shots, because they think it will make the performance dynamic. What they fail to realize is that it fails spectacularly, when you try to apply this to a performance that is already dynamic. Then it just looks like a shaky mess.
For me the Inkigayo 2014 and 2017 must be in jail with the gayo dajeon 2014 and ama 2017. They make me sick, I can’t watch.🤮 It’s difficult to find good camera work for choreo. And on korean award shows or music shows, they are not good at all. Thanks for this video. 💜
The first bts thing i've watched was their AMA DNA performance. My reaction was "ok another bland boyband" and now i know it's all because of the camera work 😬 fortunately i discovered more a few months after that....
Thank you for finally providing me with some context about those title cards because it's stumped me for years why BTS chose to use those title cards in their UA-cam video. You're right, the production and camera work was offensive.
Bora thank you so much for this video. The last one I knew the backstory but never saw the one filmed on the show, but I can imagine how heartbroken and frustrated the boys must have felt...this was a sabotage and I think fully intentional downplay. Shame on those people!
Wow that 2017 inkigayo mic drop was literally unwatchable for me. I thought I was going to start getting a headache. Just overwhelming. The 2017 AMA video was infuriating, too. I have a love hate relationship with performance videos, compared to dance practices or MVs, because I often feel like they cut away from the moments I'm most excited to watch or see. If the camera moves too much or zooms in and out to much or they cuts between different angles too much it really ruins the performance for me.
The one that stands out to me isn’t on this list and maybe it doesn’t bother anyone else. Let me preface that JK is my bias, so this isn’t about a biased person wanting their guy on camera all the time. Now to the event I am talking about. During Dionysus at the 2019 MMAs starting at 33:06, after Suga’s rap, then JK and V dance we behind JHope, then it is Jimin’s part. During Jimin’s part we got to see him just long enough (1 second) to know that he was ON FIRE, but they cut to the group. IMO, as much as I loved seeing all of them, I think they should have kept it on Jimin at that time.
@Imme_begin YES. They cut away too soon. I highly recommend watching his individual fancam from that performance. It’s cool to see some of the things you usually don’t (including him almost falling off his chair in exhaustion once the lights came down).
Exactly! Fake Love 2018 MAMA Japan is always top of mind for me. But it never shows up on search because it's an inactive channel. 🥲 Not much I could do about the darkness but I tried to brighten it as much as possible without ruining it. (I'm replying to everyone who mentions this performance specifically, haha).
@Nilaratna i wonder who decided the darkness level, if it's BTS team or MAMAs. And I am sure they did a rehearsal for this. But maybe they didn't do a full one with the lighting, etc. I could be wrong, I should watch the bangtan bomb for this event. It's disappointing coz the added moves (before the song itself and the ending part) were really great!
@ I’d like to know too… I think producers in general tend to veer towards drama and theatrics… hence, camera movement and quick cuts and trying to get all these different angles that we, as TV viewers, don’t need. Dark lighting is meant to give extra drama - but we end up not seeing clearly, especially when they wear black-on-black! 😅 Yes, I couldn’t agree more. It’s disappointing because each performance - especially this version of Fake Love - can only happen once, essentially.
Even before watching this vid I'm triggered lol. Cameramen messing up their performances and not showing the incredible footwork and synchronisation, or doing crazy sweeping shots, or close ups of the wrong person etc etc have been a major frustration of mine for years. Grrrrrrrr.
Ugh! Inki gave me motion sickness gurl... But there are 2 other performances which is not bad camera work but mostly bad lighting and that rubs me the wrong way- MAMA 2018 Fake Love & MMA 2019 medley Jhope's stage. Both were so dark that you could hardly see the choreo. Some focus lights would have been better. But thank god for the BTS choreo videos!!
Totally agree!! 💯 I don’t mind a little audience but not excessive. Also do t like when they don’t capture choreos. The close ups are good but why can’t they do full body close up especially while they’re dancing & singing! Inkigayo do have bad camera work. I get so frustrated watching that I don’t even bother. The 2014 MBC was the worst. That is one of my all time favorite performances. American award shows is just awful, I don’t need to watch the audience but a few times. It’s like they can’t appreciate a group that actually can sing & do amazing choreo 😡 anyhu thank you Bora for another great video. Appreciate all your hard work & hope BTS sees your videos!! BORAHAE 💜💜💜
2025 ~ I totally agree with you. They should fire that unskilled cameraman at the Inkigayo events - that's a very basic thing one learns in live photography class and obviously he is not qualified.
I never knew the story behind the intro performance trailer video and its now my favorite piece of Bangtan lore 😂 that level of petty and shade is aspirational
14:23 This was my first time watching them performing, and I remember feeling so angry for the camerawork that wasn’t showing them properly and instead focused on the audience most of the time, but at the end of their performance I felt completely in love with those 7 boys till today 🙋🏻♀️💜
Any of the Dionysius performances on either award shows or music shows who just refuse to have the camera anywhere near Jimin when he does his little solo dance part slightly separated from the members. They just show the other 6 members and do not want to show Jimin doing one of his iconic body rolls. Maybe they think the camera will combust from his power? 😉 Love you list and totally agree that it needed to be the top of the Gaol list. All the Inkigayo ones give me motion sickness.
Me encantó este video, original, diferente y completo. Gracias. Definitivamente el trabajo de cámara es super importante para no estropear una excelente interpretacion.
yes i always notice bad camera work it annoys me so much especially when they don't film the person singing (i noticed certain program don't seem to film one particular member seemingly purposely) and when they make a mess of filming the choreo like why can't they just to a good shot of the middle of the stage if they aren't sure..... they'd cover everything.
Inkigayo camerawork is the camerawork definition of "graphic design is my passion"
Looks like an attempt to sabotage them, to me.
😂😂😂😂😂
Inkigayo camerawork can make someone to have epilepsy attack even if that person don't suffer from epilepsy.
😅🤣😂
Te apuesto que esos camarógrafos eran pasantes.
Geez, I don’t even get motion sickness easily, and but inkigayo 2017 actually made my head hurt and eyes cross lol
That was the one I was repeatedly saying jail as I watched this, because anything that could make me get a headache while watching BTS is a crime.

I haven’t started the video yet, but I’m STILL salty about j-hope’s live Arson performance on that awards show. Such an amazing stage and iconic performance, probably my favorite, and the camera ZOOMS OUT on the dance break where you don’t even see him!!!
Straight. To. Jail !
the camera work makes me so upset for that one too
oh yes and was pointed at the gas bottle that was supplying the fuel for the fire. yep I don't know what happened did the camera person faint or something.
Bora... Thank you so much! I really and truly appreciate your dedication
Bora, how the hell did you edit this? I’m not even halfway through and I’m getting sick with these inkgayo clips, lord help me
Same. I was getting nauseous for real. I hadn't seen those performances before and man she wasn't wrong about the 2017 one being even worse.
I haven’t admit I wasn’t sure about this topic but wow did you do a great job explaining the importance of good camera work. I had no idea!
All of them... All of them must get a life prison sentence honestly.
And this is why I like to watch the dance practice where there is only one camera facing the group : then we can appreciate the choreography !
SNL was my first live performance that also left me wanting more immediately!
Thank you for putting this all together, it must have been a lot to watch and edit!
this is such a fun (and frustrating) video lmaooo thank you boracity 💜 i love your more light-hearted videos
5:40 oh sh*t I got motion sick from watching 🤢 how did you edit this girl you are a legend. I 💜 u keep going
Seems like a part 2 is in order. 🤭
Now will have to rewatch some of the performances and the behind the scenes. 😊
The AMA Butter performance, where the camera chose to show 2 girls in the audience dancing, instead of focusing on j-hope's iconic dance break.
Inkigayo uses the kind of distracting camerawork designed to hide mistake and flaws… counterproductive with BTS.
The shaking of the camera just makes my eyes burn and I have to blink a few times to avoid a mild headache everytime 😢
Always so impressed with the amount of research you do!
I immediately thought of the huge wide shot at the end of the 2018 MMAs. The beginning of that show is so stinking good but then they pull out way too wide and you can't see the dancing at the end of the performance, and Idol has some of my favorite choreography that BTS has ever done too
To all those terrible camera work videos “Keep it simple and let them shine!”
I still remember the entire twitter feed talking about the camera work during some of these😭🤣🤣 Mess, mess, to JAILLLLLL
I really admire your insights on BTS. Your videos are one of a kind. Good job! 👏👏👏💜
I am so excited to see this!!! There are so many bad camera performances that just made us so mad!!! I can't wait to see what you put!
Hello, so happy to have a new video, i like your work a lot, thank you
2018 BBmas fake love performance still pisses me off till this day XD the camera work was just not ugh
Hi Bora ! Hi Bora sister...this is epic...i love the "jail" category...omg i nearly fell off my chair laughing when u expained this category...yup the cameraman has to go to jail...😂😂😂😂. Also, tq for the back story abt BTS having 3 videos with also having hillarious titles...😅😅😅
Love your analytic styles and please continue....take care
Apobangpo 💜
That Inkigayo shaky camerawork makes me get motion sickness.
Thank you for making this video! I can't stand a lot of the camera work when they perform live!
Thank you for making this type of video! It helped me a lot with my research.
Inkigayo camerawork is making my head hurt.
They make me sick, I can’t watch.🤮
It’s difficult to find good camera work for choreo.
Great video essay Bora! As always! 💜
inkigayo giving me more motion sickness than most vehicles, AND IM STANDING STILL
Wow that 2017 inkigayo mic drop was literally unwatchable for me.
Boranow officially I'm addicted to you don't even think to stop 😅😅😅love you 💜💜💜💜
1:31 two seconds of this performance and I already got a little dizzy, wtf was that 😂😂
The one that stands out to me isn’t on this list and maybe it doesn’t bother anyone else.
I feel dizzy watching the inkigayo part.
queen posted!!! the last one was literally a CRIME
MAMA Fake Love in Japan. it was too dark, you cant see whats happening
This was a super interesting compilation! Thank you for sharing ! 😊
BORAHAE 💜💜💜
Yes, I definately notice bad camerawork and it's always infuriating. I agree with your list, bora
Thanks for Your work Boracity you are simply amazing!! Borahae 💜💜
I get really bad motion sickness whenever I watch the Inkigayo ones!
For the 2018 mma idol, the iconic kick from Jimin was missed cos they did some sort of aerial shot😢😢
😂 I didn't know the story behind the last one, I love it! they are so iconic 💜
Love you list and totally agree that it needed to be the top of the Gaol list. All the Inkigayo ones give me motion sickness.
i would send inkigayo 2017 mic drop to jail 😂 you're too kind
Me encantó este video, original, diferente y completo. Gracias. Definitivamente el trabajo de cámara es super importante para no estropear una excelente interpretacion.
I read lots of times that Inkigayo is a standard for bad camera work and other technical issues.
yes i always notice bad camera work it annoys me so much especially when they don't film the person singing (i noticed certain program don't seem to film one particular member seemingly purposely) and when they make a mess of filming the choreo like why can't they just to a good shot of the middle of the stage if they aren't sure..... they'd cover everything.
