Great shoot Daniel and Marissa, but having worked as a car journo and occasional (B-grade) car shooter for 20 years, one of the first rules of car photography I learned is to turn the front wheels so the wheel not the tyre faces the camera (yes, I know this is a portrait shoot). A little 'right hand down' on the steering would have improved this great shot. And a black car on a bright day is murder! :)
Wouldn't it be great if car rental companies also offered the option of an attractive model with the car?!! Seriously, great shot, nice angle and wide lens perspective. I love when you can use a strobe, but match it perfectly with the ambient light to where it doesn't scream flash. Marisa wears her usual glamour as good as it gets. Coincidently, a few years ago I visited my young son in SoCal, and rented a black Mustang convertible to take him cruising. It was a blast!
Driving through a beautiful desert in a Mustang convertible, and casually stopping to photograph Marisa in a red dress. Tough job, but somebody's got to do it. :) Marisa can be Glam-O-Matic when she wants to. The shots look good. Well done, you two!
I would envy you less if you said Marissa was a terrible person and a terrible travel companion. Otherwise, got out of the city, beautiful day, camera, model, paycheck, who could ask for more! Thanks for the lesson and reminders of what we can do to get out of the box.
Daniel, what is your experience with CP filters for lighting conditions like this. Living in the SW, a CP is my go to adjustment for controlling reflections off automobiles and bringing out the rich blue skies... but, have never tried a CP with off camera flash. Learned a lot from this video. Cheers!
I use HSS for shooting all of the Cars I shoot. HSS works amnazing for shooting White cars! It keeps the body lines from being all washed out and you are able to see them. I use a Godox AD600BM and two TT600 speedlights controlled by the Xpro controller so I can adjust the strobes straight from the camera!
Hey Daniel, do you have issues with laptop/lights overheating in hot conditions? Ive just done a test shoot in my back garden on a sunny day and both fans are working hard. I had the laptop under a cover too. Makes me think I'll just need to test the shot initially then turn the laptop off. The light will have to suffer i guess? Using Ellinchrom studio lights. Cheers, Col
Wouldn't you like to be able to turn down the sun by one or two (or 500) stops sometimes? How easy it would be in certain situations... but the rest of the world would be pissed!!! Thank you Daniel and Marisa. You guys be safe!!!
Marisa is baking in the sun, right? But you have a wool cap on??? Salty s weat would've poored down my face and into my eyes negating the whole reason for stopping LOL
Adel Tayee Nope, that would be backlighting, against the sun is used when you are using flash to overpower or match sunlight - vs as a fill for instance.
I need to save this vid for later. When people say “I only want to shoot with natural lighting” 🧐 I can show them this. I don’t feel so awkward carrying two speed lights in my hiking pack now 😁
We all do. The first manufacturer that produces it will sell them for $30k a pop. When traveling, they will save your back, but on the other hand, they would destroy your marriage..
Another great video. Dream team right here.
Marisa always looks so beautiful.
Two beautiful subjects, Marisa and a Mustang.
Another fun Daniel / Marisa shoot! Thanks for showing some of the post process stuff as well. It's "cool cool cool!"
JDS thanks

Nice!
Thank you!
Good info and video, Looks like a fun day out. A friend of mine in Belgium uses Profoto B1 units for his car shots. Thanks Daniel and Marisa
Cool

Mike James thanks Mike!
much better than studio shoots
Thanks Daniel, stay safe.
Thanks!
If you look long enough you will see a car in these portraits 😅, Marissa is the best
Nice work and i like the The Landscape. I invite you Daniel to come and take pictures of Israel's landscapes with sports cars and luxury.
Loved it. great Video .
Thanks!
Thanks Daniel. I've been wondering if an unmodified flash would work in similar circumstances - and you've done the heavy lifting for me. :-)
Shane Baker cool
these new godox/flashpoint oncamera flashes are pretty powerful
I do love these location shots. You are welcome to come to my neighborhood. Thanks for another great demo!
Patty Mattes 🚗
“And I been through the desert on a horse with no name...”
All I could think during this 😂
Sweet vid as usual. Quick question. Would a flag on the flash camera left have worked well enough to stop that hotspot of light reflecting on the car?
Hi Daniel, great video as usual !! Marisa looks fantastic
Off topic: why are metal detectors are prohibited over there ?
This I do not know

Good morning from a sunny England, great video :-) can i ask what focal length/lens you were using please ?
djb7uk It was the 24 to 70 zoom lens
@@DanielNortonPhotographer Thanks Daniel :-)

Sure a CP would have been great to have, unfortunately I did not pack one on this trip
great stuff! It looks like a 40 hour drive from new york to nevada
if you don't hit any red lights!
Why not use a ND filter, instead of taking the aperture so far down 🤔 im a beginner so I would like to know the thought process
Just matter of choice.
I would remove or desaturate the road above the hood. Or I’m just to much picky. Love your training videos

Nice! I felt the deep focus worked better here, but of course, HSS is a good option as well
I mean, everyone knows that already, but
Damn she's beautiful!
brilliant
Thanks!

Col Morley I have not had that issue
To remove the reflection of the stand and flash from the car do you use the same procedure? Thanks.
Sure

Haha, yeah with every photographer making their own small adjustments! lol
Awesome
Thanks!
A question. Did u slightly underexpose the background in the early part of the video, so that the model would pop? Best. William
WILLIAM PERRELLIphoto com yes the sky was less exposed at the beginning
Daniel, why are not in focus these shots? When you go close to the eye, the image appears blurry for example here 4:41... :/
The computer screen capture was just slow - the images are sharp
@@DanielNortonPhotographer ohhh ok 👌 ☺ thanks for the answer and for the content! Also to Marisa!🤗
or maybe a bit diffraction blur from the small aperture?
Marisa is baking in the sun, right? But you have a wool cap on??? Salty s weat would've poored down my face and into my eyes negating the whole reason for stopping LOL
English isn't my native lang but i thought shooting "against the sun" means that sun will be in the subject background?
Adel Tayee Nope, that would be backlighting, against the sun is used when you are using flash to overpower or match sunlight - vs as a fill for instance.
Daniel is this photoshop apart of capture one or is it its only software ?
Cody Burton Photoshop is a separate piece of software
What lens did you use Dan?
How much did you underexposed the ambient?
The aperture was f/20... that’ll do it most of the time...
I need to save this vid for later. When people say “I only want to shoot with natural lighting” 🧐 I can show them this. I don’t feel so awkward carrying two speed lights in my hiking pack now 😁
For sure!
Daniel, Your flashes don't go up to 11?
What program are you running on the MacBook, which you've tethered to your camera?
Capture one
Capture One
What does your shirt say?
Lorraine FreelyKirk That’s the concert shirt from our size matters video
Should have turned the wheel to the right more so it is square on to you, less dusty treads in image then ;-)
Craig M unless that’s how I wanted it 🤷🏻♂️
Ho Daniel Daniel , what are you doing with a great car and a great woman in the desert? by the way who drives ?
I'm doing a tutorial video... :P
Well, I would have taken care of the flash reflections on the car in post.
Well show is all what you would do on your youtube channel..
Good to know
Whose car is that?
I can say we did not steal it if that's what you are asking ;)
did you use manual or TTL for the strobes?
Manual, I set them at full power
f20? Made my day. Lol
:)
Can't you just move the light stand out of the scene? And maybe the car forward to get the sign out of the way? Instead of photoshopping it?
I could not back the light up any further and get the power I needed. Mostly this has to do with the camera angle, not the position of the car

Gotcha. The problem with speedlights. I like them, but I always want more. Wish they had a 3200watt speedlight.
We all do.

Isn't Nevada hotter than hell? And still he wears a beanie 🤣
it was maybe 60 degrees
@@DanielNortonPhotographer
Thats either very hot in Celsius or very cold for a desert in Fahrenheit
