I've thought about this too! I'm working on another book of essays, but I think that an essay about this project might fit right in. Thanks for the encouragement
@@HannahLouisePoston you should definitely!!! I feel like the time is ripe for something like that to be published in large publications. And I would love to read it as well!
0:04 Kind of crazy that the marketing strategy of sales parallels so perfectly with trying to break away from a toxic relationship that so many of us can relate to..
I'm SOOOOOO guilty of this! I buy clothes and place one order for $150 and then a week later I'll buy more and place another order for $90, At the time $240 initially seems ridiculous but broken up into two orders...that's ok. Or so I tell myself. I am so glad I found you Hannah! You have given me so much food for thought and perspective on my shopping. I love your videos about your no buy. It's helping me so much!
Hi Elle! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I just checked out your channel & subscribed, it looks great. I'm right where you are with food (eating tons of fat, feel amazing, shocked about the lies we've been told). Can't wait to watch more!
I'm not tempted by the Sephora sale at all but I think this is great advice that relates to all sales and similar promotions. I realised that when I shop at sales, it's usually NOT that I buy something I need at a cheaper price, but that I buy things I wouldn't have bought at all, if I hadn't been tempted by the 50% off or 75% off sticker. PS I think you should seriously consider doing a no-buy LIFE. You already have so many products. Just replacing them when you run out already constitutes more purchasing than most people would do. And I think that constant buying might not make you as happy as you think (it doesn't for me and I'm very prone to it). Thanks for this thoughtful video!
Yes, it totally relates to all sales! The Sephora sale is particularly insidious because so many beauty junkies are addicted to Sephora specifically, so even 15% off is enough to trick us into spending FAR more than we usually would. But it applies everywhere. I think it's ok to buy things on sale, as long as you genuinely believe it's a good idea for you to buy them, and you would have bought them full price. Re: no buy life, I'm already starting to think about what will happen after this year. I'm not sure that my current super-strict rules will follow me into 2019, but with the spending habit thoroughly broken, there are a lot of other options that I didn't have before. Stay tuned! :)
Terpsichoral Tangoaddict You're absolutely right, it does relate to all sales. I'm not a make-up junkie, but I do overspend on clothes, jewellery and toiletries and during sales I go into overdrive. I'm now doing a no-buy 2019 to break myself of this habit.
Love the song to go with your recommendations - so apropos and yet whimsical. Laughing while I watch. I find myself drawn into your videos. They are real, and messy, and on target for what I need to hear. Thank you for sharing!
I know this video is older, however the wisdom is timeless! I am not at all a shopaholic, and rarely spend much money on makeup, or any other items except when I very much need something, (haha, I’ve been unlucky enough to develop different vices which are equally challenging to overcome, so I totally get it-I am generally a no judgement zone), but I adore your videos and in the month+ since finding your channel have been blessed with being able to watch and thereby catch up with most all of your videos. In today’s “acquisition of things”-driven-society, many people DO fall prey to these common tricks companies use to separate people from their money, and I adore that you’re out here educating others to the tricks of the consumerism junket! You’re doing good by humankind here, and I plan to refer friends with a need for this valuable information to this and other of your videos!!! ❤️❤️ P.s. I want to add that I find it so invigorating that a well-educated, very well read and spoken young woman, with a vast knowledge and understanding of proper use of language, in both speech and writing, as well as a great handle on introspective thought is doing quite well for herself here on “the You Tubes”😉... it’s precisely what has been missing and we all could use hundreds more individuals similar to yourself, creating content and widening horizons for other, younger people. That all is to say I truly appreciate you and your channel, Hannah!❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻
This is an older video BUT so helpful for me right now. My shopping addiction has been fuelled so intensively in the recent few weeks and I’ve been buying with no end so I have started a no buy. Anyway, thank you for inspiring me Hannah this video is filled with so much hard truths and wisdom ❤️
Rewatching this whole no -buy year...seeing it in another perspective...and enjoying it. Love your work Hannah. You really inspire me. Long time watcher, sending positive vibes from the Czech Republic 💕
Hannah, your videos truly have changed my life. I have watched this one and several others multiple times to remind myself to keep my pennies. Thank you for all your time, talent, and thoughts going into this channel
Yes! I kept saying “yes” during this entire video. I buy what I intended to buy: skin care and makeup that I like that’s already discounted and that I know is now even less (discounts and sets of my favourite brands). But it does not make me buy more. As far as backups, I only buy an extra if it’s something I go through in less than 6 weeks and it has been a constant repurchase over the last 2 years. I never want to have a bunch of product on hand, only to discover something I like more! And powder products last for...YEARS!
I just came to this after seeing your current VIB Sale "Recommendations" video. I don't find this preachy at all, actually. Very fun, reasonable and smart perspectives on why there isn't much reason for most people to spend $ at these sales. When I had my ultimate, final "breakup" with Sephora, I had been finding it harder and harder to find stuff to buy during the VIB sales, even though I had been frantically trying to find stuff. Sephora's *asshole* policy of waiting for a VIB member to give the discount code, without having been asked for it, turned out to be a good thing for me actually.
I saved this video to watch so I can keep my resolve during the sales for my upcoming no-buy year. Thanks, Hannah! These behaviours are definitely reflected in myself. I did small orders during sales weeks, convincing myself they weren't that bad. I also did a last minute "panic buy" order. I want to change these habits and that's why I'm excited to do my own no-buy!
Hey Hanna! Your video was really great, as usual!!! I almost agree with everything you said, except for the backups. I truly think that sales can be a good thing if you know yourself. For exemple, if you know what's your holy grail moisturizer, and if you know how it takes for you to use it up, i feel like you can take profit of sales to buy enough of it, and be OK untill the next ones. That's why, for me, this year is not only a "no buy year", it's also a year during which I want to find exactly how long it takes for me to use up everything I use on a daily basis. So that I can be smarter in the future, and enjoy sales without buying a bunch of stuff I don't need. I am happy to see that your no buy year changed you the same way it changed me :)
Hi Priscille! I can totally see what you mean about backups being a good investment if you REALLY know yourself and you've taking the time to learn exactly how long it takes to use something up (especially if you take into account the expiration date of the item). If it's very carefully considered, it could work. But in 99% of cases, when I hear people talking about backups, they've stocked up obsessively on more skincare and makeup then they can ever go through. So I mostly wanted to speak to that. Who knows, maybe by 2019 I'll know myself & my products so well that I'll be buying a backup or two at the sale :) Thanks for commenting!
Great video! I've never purchased a single thing from Sephora, so this sale doesn't call to me. However, I'm currently fighting the urge to buy ALL the new Ordinary products. AHHHHHHH!!
Just remember that The Ordinary recommends that you don't layer more than 3 products at once! So if you already have 3 or more products in each of your routines (morning and night) there's no room for more :)
So many solid points, Hannah! I've always tried to play the thought game of not buying something on sale if I wouldn't buy it full price, but all your other recommendations were spot on as well! This video also helped me be okay with not going hog wild on a yarn sale that's currently happening, since I can't afford it anyway. :)
Especially when the sale is only 15%....it's like, basically still full price? It helps if you were going to buy it anyway, but not as a reason to change your mind. Thanks for watching!!! Good luck resisting the yarn sale!! xoxoxoxo
New rules, love it! I have a small list (3 items) and I’m not deviating to spend money on stuff that I don’t need. And if I don’t get them, I will be fine! To me, 15% is not a good sale. I did buy items from the Ulta sale. 50% off is a sale. I was very much in control with what I bought, which was not a lot in my opinion. There were more items that I wanted but I told myself nope, you don’t need it. And I was fine with that! Since starting my low/no buy, all of my purchases are very thought out. And I like that my thought process is extending into things outside of make up and skin care too!
sounds perfect! It's awesome to hear that your low-buy is having such a noticeable effect on your life. I'm glad you are able to take advantage of the sale with a few well-thought-out purchases. xoxo!!!
Also, why is this sale so popular? 15% is infintisimal unless you spend a large amount of money. Skinstore had 30% off last week and I snapped up my Good Genes and was really excited about it because I save $30 on a product I use and love. I can get easily tricked by the frenzy of this sale. Again, thank you for this level headed and thoughtful video.
that is such a good question. Perhaps a lot of makeup buyers are not only addicted to buying makeup in general, but also addicted to shopping at Sephora specifically? (I think this is/was true for me, actually.) There's something about Sephora. But it BLINDS us. Also...Good Genes is everything. I've been back on it for about three weeks now and the change is so obvious. I will definitely check Skinstore when I start running out. Thanks for watching and commenting! xoxoxo!!!
Yeah, I agree that it's specific to Sephora. Isn't this like the ONLY sale Sephora ever does? The fact that it's only once or twice a year is a huge factor.
I totally do this when my favourite clothes shop has sales- multiple shops, only buying in the sale, wanting to buy more after the sale... im on day 8 no buy thanks to you and have ignored this year’s sale. Many thanks x
I don't agree on the first one. It happens so often to me that I choose not to buy a product JUST because of the price. Some things I hust can't afford to buy. Therefore, if the price goes down that's when I buy the thing. I do this with my everyday body cream (sol de Janeiro): I only buy it when it's at least 20% off. Ps: sorry for any mistakes, I'm not a native speaker. Edit: I don't agree on the backups as well. I will buy backups for things I ho through extremely quickly (mascar, moisturizer, micellar water) because I know I will use them up before their expiration date.
OMG! You just described what happened to me at the sale! I got THREE highliners (different colors, though), placed 2 orders, combed the store, went like each day of the sale (my work is right by the mall), bought backups, and on and on and on. I am so glad I found your channel and started my no-buy year in May.
hah, that's so funny that you got three highliners just like my example! I feel like it's easy for me to predict because all I have to do is look at my past behavior. At least you know you have enough eyeliner :)

I also love MJ Highliners and yes I am ALWAYS tempted to buy them, thanks for the video. Even 20 dollars is too expensive for an eyeliner and I already have 3 colours in my vanity
I love the way you describe how little you save with the sales, especially with your eyeliner example. One thing I've noticed is because I get numbers mixed up in my head a lot, a $19 item feels more expensive than a $22 item, because 9 is more than 2. Noticing this has been important in spending less :D
You could do look of the day with items from your previous purchases. You could do videos, if u did not yet, of pursuits u were able to follow because of saving $ and more free time
Im slowly working through your videos and watching this at such a good time because black friday is coming so soon. And this is the crazy thinking going on: Ive been lemming so hard for em cosmetics sets (great value and emily noel talked about the glosses) + you've sold me on faded clementine, oh look there is a rose nude, that muted rose shade looks great too. Which i totaled up, is going to cost me over a 150 dollars (local money) and then since they dont do international shipping, ill have to pay around 30 for a forwarding service. Then i might as well get some bite lip products if im using a forwarding service. I wonder if pat mcgrath is doing a sale, if im doing a no buy next year maybe i should get the mothership 4 ($180), ohh or the new blitztrance duo (about $100) and their international shipping fee is about $30. The absolute crazy thing is that i already have a good amount and by the time i get around to them, they will already be old!! I have 4 pat mcgrath lipsticks that are just swatched, new hourglass lippies and charlotte tilbury. I have older lipglosses that i want to focus on earlier next year and knock out to keep my lip stash fresh. I already got 3 beautiful holiday palettes that i love a lot, and already feeling a bit overwhelmed. It's crazy the urge to buy when the logical thing is to wait for next year, when i actually have a lot less so i can actually get around to using what i buy 😂 it's probably the feverish nature when channels keep doing hauls and reviews!! Time for me to unsubscribe from some ahh
they will all wait for you! They will all still be there! Trust me, if you do a no-buy year, you will be SO glad you didn't buy these things (rather than being glad that you did). If you do buy them, partway through the year you will wish you had held off and wish you could have that money and space back, I promise.
God so much of this is me. I have backups LIKE CRAZY. I don't know why I am so worried about not having a backup, but I have an entire closet shelf in my hall closet (a HUGE ONE) filled with my stockpiles. I don't know wtf is wrong with me. I also have some kind of irrational fear with losing the ROUGE status, that red card. Ulta's platinum is much easier to attain, and has better rewards. But the idea that I might not be "Rouge" and get that "special treatment" that doesn't even exist is such a weird mental thing for me.
One of my goals this year is to lose my Rouge status at Sephora! I'm actually starting to think that JUST buying skincare replacements of totally empty categories (my only rule-sanctioned purchasing) is going to keep me Rouge. It adds up so quickly. I'm trying to think of Rouge as a mark of shame (for me...I don't judge other people about it, because everyone has different circumstances, different financial constraints, etc). But for me, being VIB Rouge so many years in a row is just a sharp reminder of how much money I've spent on things I don't need. And you're right, there's not really any special treatment...it's a trick, just like the sale. If I lose my Rouge status, I will be so proud!
It IS a trick and I have been suckered for years by it! I told myself this year I would MAYBE make Rouge. And I would maintain Platinum, and that's about halfway for both already, surprisingly, after returns. Last year I was both by March. I think I was Platinum last year before January ended. I don't know why I can't break it but I am determined to. THANK YOU for replying!
Given that you are a writer, this year can turn into an excellent book. Memoirs or short essays. I'll buy it.
I've thought about this too! I'm working on another book of essays, but I think that an essay about this project might fit right in. Thanks for the encouragement

hah, that's so funny that you got three highliners just like my example! I feel like it's easy for me to predict because all I have to do is look at my past behavior.
@@HannahLouisePoston aww thanks so much for your always encouraging and always lovely comments. Yes i will stay strong for my bank account!!
Omg I needed this....thank you! You are very inspiring.
thanks, Ashleigh! I have a feeling I will go back and watch this in 2019 every time there is a sale.

Aw, thanks! xo!
Great video
Thanks! It's my personal favorite :)
