    I loved watching this as a teenager. At a time when cgi has taken over effects; we tend to forget the magic that these people created .

    Thank You for documenting those Wonderful times, with groups of talented people materializing everybody’s dreams, taking the challenges and producing those models .
    And for many of them:
    “ cheers in heaven “

    Believe it or not this is surprisingly ambitious for a tv show.. motion control technology by this time was at its best but big sound stages designed primarily for exploding star ships was unheard of even for Star Wars productions

    The narrator for Movie Magic was Neil Ross who voiced characters like Keith, Pidge, Jeff, Chip and other characters on Voltron: Defender of the Universe, hook, slag and Springer on Transformers G1, Shipwreck on G.I. Joe. He’s also the announcer for the Press Your Luck revival in 2019.

      At the same time as "Movie Magic," another network (TLC, perhaps?) ran a rival series called "Hollywood FX Masters," hosted by Christopher
      Reeve. It, too, is well worth a look...if you can find it anywhere.

    DS9 was not actually in Federation space (at first) since Bajor did not join the Federation until sometime in the last couple seasons. Sometime while the Dominion was occupying the station, actually according to Memory Alpha.

    ..I remember this program and this episode because ds9 had either just premiered or was about to. Seth McFarlane is being laughed at because he wanted all of the orville to be a model, not cgi except for minimal needs, but all the detail and beauty shots is an old fashioned model

    What an unbelievable effort in terms of money, tools and material compared to 3d graphics today 😮

      In actuality, CG effects houses, the good ones that is, can be many times more expensive than a model effects workshop.

      3D requires a LOT of work. Just because a computer is involved, it doesn't make it as easy as pushing a few buttons.
      I'm making a no-budget film right now. I need a rat monster creature for it. I've dabbled in 3D modelling and animation for 15 years - and still I've opted to build a rod puppet for the rat creature instead. As complicated a process as it has been, I think it would be way more difficult to get a good result with 3D graphics on my own.

      @@djphilter Keep me posted Jeremie! I spent last week making 'clouds' and no joke... They look better than clouds on the screen!
      Here's what I did: One of my many girlfriend's came round to visit (it's France 😂🤣) , I showed here my filmed 'sky' on the TV... Her remark was "Beautiful... What film is that from?" Then I showed her the 'set' which was a roll of old chicken-wire and an old pillow, and she didn't believe it, frankly neither do I!!
      I think one of the secrets is a camera with a small sensor though I am no photographer much less a cinematographer... But I am the King of making do 👍⚒️🎬

      @@nigelcarren That is fascinating. Indeed it is really cool that we can make things look so real when in reality, it could be nothing more than some scrap junk laying around the house! I'm currently trying to make a cyberpunk style night city, with lights, fog, cars, ads and all kinds of stuff. My main inspiration has come from the film Slice of Life on UA-cam.

    • @nigelcarren
      @nigelcarren 3 роки тому

      @@djphilter Me too!! My first challenge is a TOTAL rework of my UA-cam channel showing all my miniature armour coming to life. The clouds are for above a castle which is at the end of my channel trailer. I live in a sort of ruined Manoir, and I wanted a transition from the model castle to one of the Arrowslits where I live.
      I built it all... Twas a thing of 500 LED's, but the colour was way off (I wanted warm welcoming candlelight), So in the end 2.5Volt torch bulbs solved the problem, but A) Try finding a box of those and B) They get hot which melts the model!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr

    I was hoping for Star Trek Voyager effects. DS9 is stupid.

    • @HarmonicWave
      @HarmonicWave 2 роки тому

      Voyager probably hadn't started when they filmed this behind the scenes, especially if they're showing the pilot episode of DS9 (filmed in 1992). DS9 is far from stupid, it actually requires intelligence to really get the most out of it.

    • @skylx0812

      As much as I liked Voyager, having a woman with smoker's voice as a captain was a stretch. One of the reasons Genevieve Bujold bowed out was because they asked her to wear a padded bra.
      They eventually got their shapely space babe when Jeri Ryan joined the cast.
