Hey Gail, look up some old episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore show from the earlier seasons. She uses the manual Chemex to brew coffee in quite a few episodes! Very cool!
Seattle Coffee Gear If you have access to the Sundance channel, they show a marathon of the series every Thursday morning. :)
Is it preferable to the manual method?
You brought up temperature and flavor in the video and I think you should do a video about it. I find I don't like the coffee "piping hot" out the brewer and prefer it when it has cooled down a little toe very warm. Also, does a brewer like this, which is like my brand new Bonavita, make drip coffee or is it more like automated pour over coffee?
This is SO cool! I remember my parents having an original Chemex on our the stove back in the day. I was too young to enjoy coffee back then, but seeing this brings me back! Thanks! :)
It looks like the original equipment manufacturer for that 1970s vintage Chemex Automated was Philips (known as Norelco at the time in the USA, as Philips could not use their own branding in the country because of Philco).
With exception of the color, the Chemex Automated looks virtually identical to the Norelco Dial-a-Brew drip coffeemaker from the early-mid 1970s. But, of course, the Chemex Automated has additional features suited to the Chemex carafe.
The Norelco brewer does not have any control knobs and switches. It also doesn't have the wetting cycle and will likely have a faster brewing cycle than its Chemex Automated counterpart. The Norelco also doesn't have the water spray head that the Chemex Automated has. And the Norelco will heat the water to over 200 degrees Fahrenheit and is rated for up to 1500 watts of power consumption at 120 VAC.
Where can I find the video of the 'Automated Chemex' entire brew process that you mentioned?

Thank you.
I do however think that this video was uploaded after my comment/question.
As a big Chemex fan this was a great video. A great way to start my day
I thought ideal brew temperatures fell between 195 to 205 degrees F? Should these machines have brewed hotter? If you brew another pot by hand at the recommended temperature range, how does the taste differ from the chemex machines brew job (in a side by side comparison)?Very neat to see the old machine and box, and in such amazing condition. Thanks for sharing!
I've found that warmer temps (as opposed to brewing cool like 180 or so) accent acidity.
How neat!
I'm kinda interested in buying a 3 cup Chemex would like to see how you brew with one of their unfolded filters. :3
Niebędziecie Chłopczykról
You brew roughly the same w/ the 3c as you do a 6c
Check out Stump coffee (big beard guy) for a good 3c tutorial
Not sure if that retro one was fitted with a warming base but if it was that would explain why it remained hotter! :) Gail forgot to turn that off lol
hopefully these newer high end machines will last as long!
I've seen these on eBay before
I take it you weren't in the coffee game back then, Gail?

The new machine looks like a cheap one, but the older version is kinda solid machine.
