I say mirabel actually has a magical gift but none of them realizes it. I say it is similar to her mother’s gift. There is healing physically but there is also something called mental healing. And that’s mirabel’s gift she had it all along. That’s why she didn’t get a door. It needed to be shown first.

I am also very thankful that Mirabel did not get a gift but I still think she has one. But not in the traditional sense. Her power is her heart. However, Casita/the magic couldn't physically give her that as a gift because it was something she already had. I also think this means that Mirabel is going to be Abuela's successor as the one who gives gifts to the family. As she fully understands what it means to be a member of the Madrigal family. It's not special gifts but the love the family has for one another.

I'm in the ballpark that Mirabel is to become the next matriarch of the family, hence why she has no outward powers like Alma. Seeing as we are very early in this lineage, perhaps down the line we'll see a pattern of every third generation someone will be chosen to remain giftless. Then this person will become the next head of the family

Regarding your question at the beginning, the movie is not really depicting ONE particular historical event. Colombia has a very complicated history in which, long story short, there have been internal conflicts between different factions to have political control that have resulted in basically in millions of people in rural Colombia being forced to flee their lands due to violence, and Colombia is actually the country with the highest number of internal refugees (aka "desplazados") in the world. It doesn't really matter who exactly the men in horses with machetes are, be it the conservative and liberal party in the first half of the 20th century, or the far-left guerrilas, or the far-right paramilitaries, or even the government and military itself during the 2nd half and into the 21st century, Mirabel's Grandma's story is a very common one. Many women have ended up alone and having to be strong and take care of not only their kids but also their entire communities, and the trauma of it is not only something that affects the families involved but I would say it's a collective trauma the country has. In many ways, the Madrigals can be a representation of Colombian society as a whole, always trying to get better despite its history but not always understanding and fully processing it in a healthy way.

From what I saw I think the house/magic believes whoever is in charge of the candle can't have powers. Imagine it as a reverse X-men where instead of Professor X being in charge, a trusted human was. Allowing those with powers to focus on helping others. I believe the magic knows the heart of the owner and that Abuela Alma was pure before becoming obsessed with her children's special abilities. I think the house wanted her to remember that side of herself and decided to not give Mirabel powers (also Alma's getting old and a new matriarch will be needed soon). But granny screwed that up by being a jerk and making her granddaughter grow up feeling like crap. Thanks.

Alma's gift was the mountains that protected everyone, Casita, and the magical blessings for her family. From what I've read, an ancient pagan nature god was probably who heard her prayer and answered it. Mirabel is exceptionally empathetic, giving, and intelligent. The house didn't give her a power so she could observe the family from "outside" and save the miracle from inevitably being lost from the pressure being put on everyone to keep doing more to satisfy Alma and the village. Mirabel is the perfect foil to Alma. Her tenacious drive to solve the mystery of Bruno's vision and help her family make her able to defy Alma and make her see how unhappy the family had become. The miracle is ended, but Mirabel is granted a new miracle that is better for everyone, and that's the gift that she really always wanted.

Being latino this movie feels far more personal than what it can seem to others, even though it is quite deep and impactful on its own. I didnt experience it personally but I know that just due to our culture there is a lot of pressure to be successful, and if you arent then you are failing the entire family. I know that is something a lot of people deal with normally, but in some cultures that is a big deal, and I know we do it very passive agressively. Of course that can vary, but I feel the movie displayed that specifically. That immense pressure to do what is right for the family, not for yourself. Casita is the embodiment of the family itself, it is the love that holds everyone together and protects them all. And slowly because of that pressure Abuela put on the family it started to fall apart bit by bit. Mirabel did what needed to be done in the situation. Sometimes what is needed is to say what needs to be said and have everything come crashing down to build things up again. Like how when cleaning and organizing you usualy have to make a mess to have everything be put back where it belongs, often better than before.

I think the movie was good. I liked that Mirabel’s gift was that she would take over as the glue holding the family together after Abuela. I can’t help but wonder if Abuela sensed that subconsciously since she defines herself for that role and Mirabel easily understands her family better than Abuela did.
I do kind of think the plot felt a bit flat, I can’t put my finger on it but it didn’t really hit a lot of emotional highs in the middle, but I still really loved it. Especially Mirabel, I think she is my favorite CGI Disney female character so far. She had such a cool design and I love how kind and compassionate she is in spite of her “perfect” sister and abuela constantly putting her down.

Omg also, I think Mirabel's powers is to be the next "matrona" of the family, the next "abuela". Both of them have an especial connection with the Casita that no one else has. Maybe she had her talent later in the movie because she had already learn how to keep her family together (the way Abuela did) and, only by learning that, she gets the power of being in charge, cause Abuela is not going to be there forever, so somebody has to take care pf the magic itself.

My thought since I first watched Encanto is that Mirabel did indeed get her magic power which even she doesn't know because she didn't get a "room". Mirabel got as said repeatedly empathy/love and the reason her door vanished is because the ENTIRE house/valley is HER "room".

While it would normally bother me that certain aspects of the magic aren't explained, that IS a hallmark of magical realism, a style of literature popular in Latin America and made specifically famous by Gabriel Garcia Marquez of Colombia (you can see homages to him in the yellow butterflies). Part of it is that magic is part of the natural world and aspects of the natural world are exaggerated to as magical to highlight the themes of the story and the characters. That's what I'm seeing in this film.

  • @AtarahDerek

I loved Encanto because it fixed what I felt was a glaring mistake made in Coco. Imelda needed to be called out for starting her family's generational trauma conga line, and she never was. When I expressed my frustration at this, the overwhelming majority of the responses I got said that one does not simply call out a Latino family matriarch. Then Encanto came along and said that it may not be simple or easy, but one does do it if one must. It was cathartic for me as a Cocoloco. I felt like Alma's redemption was Imelda's redemption.
Also, Bruno is just below Héctor on the list of Disney characters most in need of all the hugs.

I'd always thought that Mirabel's gift was empathy, which can't be symbolized or expressed by a single door or room. She does eventually get a door, the main door to Casita. She helped the others learn to open up and really express themselves, revealing their true feelings.
Also, I think Isabela's song "What Else Can I Do?" has the same energy as "Let It Go" from Frozen. Both Elsa and Isabela have to suppress their emotions (the Madrigals live in an era where women were often taught to suppress their emotions; never show you're angry or sad) and thus their powers. Once they go super saiyan on their powers, there's no holding back.

I think abuela also didn't have a power but she had a room since she was the keeper of the candel. I have seen theories that say that the candel (maybe Abuelo's Pedro soul?) didn't gave Mirabel a gift and insted choose her as the next keeper of the Candel and the miracle so she would be next head of the family one day like her abuela was. It would make sense that the candel choose Mirabel as the next family head since she was always so optimistic and kind hearted that she would be perfect to take the place from her abuela when the time comes, since she is the one that kept her family together and make them feel that they didn't need to be perfect or put themselfs at last to help others.

One reason they could have not explained exactly how the candle came to be and how the house is alive or if it was Pedro or God or just a merciful power from the spirit world is that a major genre in Spanish culture of storytelling is magic realism (I only know this from Span 200) which is basically unexplained/accepted magic in real times and situations or just more realistic stories. Hope you are feeling great and I hope we see more movies like this from Disney.
Not to disregard my own point but I think that the reason the door disappeared is that the Candle realized it was the wrong door, that that door was meant for Antonio and Mirabel deserved one of her own. I dunno.

Hey, a colombian here. Pedro was killed (most likely) because:
    A) Desplazamiento forzado: i don't know what the name is in english, but its when a village, town, etc, has to leave everything behind in a life or dead situation. It may be because of the guerrilla or paramilitary groups. In both situations, the people lost everything and have to start again in a new place. Colombia, sadly, has one of the biggest (if not the bigger) cases of "desplazados por la violencia" inside the country. Thats kinda like an exile you have to face, but in the same territory.
Or B) There was a time in History when Liberales and Conservadores (the two biggest political paties) had the country split in two. Someone of the other political party, could come to your house and kill you, torture you, and a million of horrific things I can't write here. Its a looooong story and I'm not doing it justice here, but is a general idea.
I think what happens in the movie is more like the A option (Desplazamiento forzado), honestly. It is a hard reality for a lot of colombians, but it makes me happy that Disney approached the subject the way they did. Because even when things are better now, we can't forget how strong the campesinos have been, and how unfair it was to leave everything behind because of violence. I think Alma and Pedro, and the people who walked with them to the new village, were an amazing representation of real colombians. The love, the support, etc. Its a sad story, but there is also a lot to be thankful for, and one of those things, is family, something really important in Latinamerica. I loved Encanto.
Please excuse me if I made a mistake here, english is my second languaje.

There are two ways to interpret the gift in regards to Abuela. Either she doesn't have a gift because she was already past the age to receive one by the time the house came about, OR the Casita itself is her gift as her pain and her love manifested the house. A safe place for her children away from the horrors that tore her husband from her. A place that grows over the years as she has new family members to love. And a place that seems to reflect her own thoughts and feelings towards her family members.

The only thing with the theory about her becoming the next head of the house... Maribel isn't a child anymore and she still doesn't have her own room. Did the house really expect her to just not have a place till she was a grown adult... I think there is more to it and I feel like it was the first sign of the house cracking. Yes more kids got powers after but that wasn't exactly about her since the house wanted to give her a door. It wanted her to have powers. Bruno left the family broken by the trauma of being a bad omen and the house might not have been able to hold in all of that pain. Breaking that one door might have been the only the house could keep it together for the years to come.

I don't know about you, but seeing Mirabel not having powers and going to fix the magic, reminds me a bit like Kiki from Kiki's delivery Service that doesn't know or learned any spells and magic abilities from her mom *(Who is also a witch)* , all she knows is flying and talking to Jiji. Then when she loses the ability to fly, talking to Jiji, and her mother's broom is broken, Kiki feels like she isn't one anymore until she realizes she needs to mature as a person *(And a witch)* and figure out her own purpose that is different than anyone's. (You can correct me if I'm wrong)
But yeah you are right, Mirabel doesn't need to have powers to prove she is great, she is great for who she is. She just needs to show it to everyone else who did have it by saying: You can make a difference even when you don't have a gift.

And I’m pretty sure that Abuelas pure grief is what caused the candle to come to life to protect her and her children. It reminds me a lot of Wanda in wandavision

Someone mentioned this in my Twitter feed and I can't get it out of my head. I think Abuela made Peppa have another kid because Antonio was born when Peppa was probably 45 or so. I can't imagine that Peppa wanted to have another kid so late in her life but I can see Abuela put pressure on her daughter because she wanted to fix the blight on the family. Also, if you notice, Abuela always wears her mourning shawl during the entire film...until the end when she talks to Mirabel and processes her grief.

Honestly, I believe Maribel did get given a gift. But it wasn't in what the family and Abuela saw as the norm. For as Bruno stated near the end of the movie, she was the Gift. She didn't need a special room for herself, for her gift was being herself and being the one to be able to see things through ways no one in her family would be able to. For her being without powers allowed her to be willing to see and do things that having a gift wouldn't have allowed her to do without one. It allowed to her to be willing to go out and figure out what the family needed to be able to help save them. I would go on more, but I feel I could be here all day discussing this idea and concept.
Basically I believe Maribel's Gift was having no Gift, to allow someone in the family to see things in a different way. Cause if you remember from the movie, the phrases "Open your eyes and see" and "I see you/me" is used frequently throughout.
Hope that wasn't too long, if so I do apologize.

Love your take on the movie. I agree with your take that Mirabel’s side of the family (Mum and sisters) received these powerhouse gifts that could really improve everyone’s life.
Powers on the other side of the family are more a hinderance and can be used to spy on people and exploit, just as easily as help. Dolores can warn about incoming danger but can also deprive town and family of any privacy and exploit the secrets she heard if she wants to.
Her brother’s shapeshifting skill to pose as whoever can only have negative uses as far as I can see.
Pepa’s gift doesn’t seem like a gift at all, since it’s out of her control as her emotions are. She is constantly trying to push down her feelings to avoid rain and clouds.
Antonio’s skill is the only helpful one for community as far as I can see.
My only big issue with the movie - I don’t see grandma awakening as a result of Mirabel’s words that quickly.
My guess is Mirabel’s serving Abuela truth would result with further scapegoating of Mirabel and blaming her for everything. Abuela has no proof what exactly made house crumble. Especially since Mirabel’s delivery is very attacking and blaming. I don’t see that quick awakening realistic to human psychology without more time passing, more conversations, just more plot. Ego defences would have kicked in big time for Abuela. If her go to mechanism was to blame Mirabel I think she would have doubled up on that as a knee jerk reaction after being attacked and losing her home.
My fear is kids watching this will believe this kind of abrupt change in a family member is possible and will be met with hard reality and further blame if they approach with truth any of the family members with strong control or narcissistic patterns of behaviour.
That said, I see how Abuela had no evil designs but was operating on wrong assumption that the cost of keeping the magic was to serve community with every ounce of magic. While in truth the magic was a gift of love, and love and mutual acceptance was powering it, not service to community. It’s apparent when day after Antonio’s gift ceremony she mentions at breakfast that they will discuss how he can serve the community with his gift the same evening. He’s a 7 year old boy and before he’s given a chance to enjoy his gift, explore it and play with it, he is roped into service into using it in a specific way designed by Abuela. That scene on the rewatch made me feel even mote empathy for Luisa and Isabela who probably received the same treatment.

I agree with 99% of your comment except that the shapeshifting gift can only be used negatively - we literally see him using it to give a mother a break from her needy infant (not a negative statement about the infant just observation) and use it to do things outside of his body’s physical limitations like decorating etc in the movie.
I can also think of other positive options - helping dementia patients, posing in family photos for absent people, modeling clothing, etc. saying that shapeshifting can only be used negatively is very short-sighted and unimaginative tbh.

I liked Encanto. Mirabel stood up for herself and called her family out on how they treat her and each other. The door to the house being hers showed that her empathy gave her the power to make her family feel at home after a long time of feeling like the house was a place where they had to keep up their facade of perfection the most driving them apart. Though as a joke while I was watching it with a friend we noticed none of the musical numbers happened without Mirabel around so maybe she has a talent for Jem and the Holograms style drive by music videos

My interpretation about the movie is as follows (spoiler alert):
Mirabel's power is to restore magic through family bonding. I feel that everything began to be damaged when each of them began to exclude Bruno, to think badly of him because of his visions, and Mirabel was in charge of fixing that by building the family relationship from a new foundation, something that she would not have been able to do if had a gift like the others, the fact of not having it prompted her to investigate the cause of the cracks to make her family proud, to be useful to her family. Finding herself in the position of being excluded, she was able to better understand Bruno's situation. Something interesting is that Mirabel along with Abuela are the only ones who talk to Casita.

The visuals, the soundtrack and the acting were AMAZING! The only issue for me was really the pacing of the story and I feel like there were too many characters and not enough character development. We had to rely on a musical number to explain the issues the family was having. The songs are bops, don't get me wrong, but I wish things had been shown more than told.
There was a lot of information to just take and not ask questions about which was frustrating. Still I agree that Empathy and compassion and Mirabells gifts, and that she'll take over for Abuela as the family head one day.

I have been watching Encanto videos and I think the whole family has empathy, even Alma (Abuela). All their powers could be various aspects of how they want to help, but Mirabel's empathy is the broadest and least specific. I think Abuela Alma's empathy was that she wanted to protect everyone, but was damaged by grief and fear, so it is also the source of instability, contributing to Alma's narcissistic tendencies and hurting the family through expectations.
Alma protected the family (and the village) in a physical way, Mirabel protects the emotions of the family and heals their emotional problems, by listening to them and, well, being empathetic.

I haven't seen the film yet, but the trailer made it clear Mirabel didn't have powers. I honestly thought you'd come up with a theory that she's adopted and that's why she didn't get a power (like men who marry into the family didn't). Like her adopted mum was busy with an emergency when a single mother went into labor and there were complications and she died in childbirth but the baby lived. Julieta felt so guilty she adopted the baby and swore the family to never tell her the truth.

I get the feeling that Mirabel did actually get a magical gift like the rest of the family (contrary to what everyone in the movie believes), only hers was in the form of Empathy. It is implied in the movie that each Madrigal family members rooms are tailored for each person to help them develop their powers in a safe space.
However, the thing with having a gift like Empathy is that it can only grow when you immerse yourself with other people. You cannot learn or develop empathy by sitting alone and isolating yourself in a room from the rest of the world.
Therefore, my theory is, that instead of giving Mirabel a magical room to work on her gift of empathy, the house instead gave her access to a much bigger space to work on her gift, which was the entire house where she had to interact with the rest of her family.

Man- I have so much to say to you on the symbolism behind Mirabel and her gifts; but for now- just started your vid, so I'm watching. Her powers/ "gifts" were "hidden", less obvious, & easy to overlook/misunderstand/dismiss. Mirabel's powers grow over time, and involve "seeing" the unseen & helping others see more clearly- not as flashy as the other powers- but nonetheless: a gift as special as she is. She does in fact open eyes; strengthening her home, family, & community; making her family proud. She had no bedroom door because the future of the family rested on her- and her door disappeared, because she was always meant to see & fix what was broken, healing & strengthening the family, renewing the miracle itself, & ultimately inheriting the Casita. This movie is so rich with beautiful symbolism.
The entire Encanto and Casita were Abuela's gift- the new home she needed, with Pedro himself watching over, providing for, & sheltering his family through the generations as Casita. Their gifts reflect their natures and their needs.
(And I made it to the end of your video. I've noticed you like that. I have really appreciated much of your take on the abusive dynamics at play in Encanto & Tangled. Thanks.)

Abuela gift is to give a gift; she has a door where it her holding the candle. Also, I noticed that before maribel touched the door, she touched the candle and then wiped her hands on her dress. I think that's why it didn't work because she had wiped away the candles' blessings from her hands. Because when you see Antonito get his gift, he didn't wipe his hands, he touched candle, and then he touched the door. Also, what would happen if abuela died, who is going to be the one to give gifts? So many questions!

Here's something I've been thinking about ever since I first saw Encanto: What if Mirabel's empathy is her gift? The triplets, Mirabel's cousins and her sisters all received gifts that were obvious. However, empathy in itself is a gift, so what if it was magically enhanced the day Mirabel was supposed to receive her gift? It's possible that her door vanished because she's meant to be the next matriarch of her family and because her actual gift isn't meant to be an obvious one like the rest of her family. Coming from experience, empathy is something that's inside a person already and could be magically enhanced in the world of Encanto. If that's the case, then it's no wonder why Mirabel's empathy is so powerful compared to most empaths.

One of the aspects about Mirabel that people sometimes seem to forget is that, despite 10 years of getting nothing but the cold shoulder from Alma, she still LOVES her as her Abuela. The whole movie is about her not just trying to make her family proud, but more intimately regain her grandmother's affection. You can even tell how after her snapping at Abuela, she has a genuine look of deep regret over what she just said. In her eyes, she's still the grandma who raised her from her childhood to her teen years.
Some people think her "forgiving" Abuela at the end was too rushed, but it really isn't if you take this into account. She never wanted to be at odds with her and like with Isabela, always had that deep-rooted desire to reconcile with her.

Her manifestation of this fear was Mirabel not getting a gift, thus forcing Abuela to face her fear, only she didn't. Which is why the cracks grew and why the gifts went away. I guess Mirabel did get a gift. She's a natural born therapist. She helped all her family figure out that they aren't perfect. Which is ok

One, the ‘flag’ on her sleeve was probably snuck in by an animator, or else they would have made an unnecessarily big deal out of it. Then again you missed the gay couple dancing at antonios gift ceremony, which they also didnt mention. (so did most people)
Also, i get the sense that any food prepared or fed to a person by Julietta would restore full health to the one who eats it. it just happens that what she feeds to mirabel and papa, for a cut from a shingle and bee stings respectively, is arepas con queso.
