I like the "only apologize if you want to" because I've definitely made some fucked up jokes, just trying to be funny...and I really hurt the feelings of someone close to me. I 100% apologized, because I felt bad and it wasn't funny.
The whole "never apologize" concept is wild to me. Just don't bow down to peer pressure to do so.
It's not even just jokes. I know so many regular people who refuse to ever apologize because they think it's a sign of weakness. That's such a horrible trait to have. I'm 35 years old and I don't think I've heard my mother apologize or take accountability for anything more than a handful of times.

Shows the difference between individualist society where you don't care how your decisions affect others.
I like what he said about how many people lose their livelihood if you're big and selfish.

In a free society we specifically want and reserve a special right for comedians to have the legal freedom to explore all topics regardless of the level of taboo. Without any consequences other than gaining/losing fans due to the funniness of the joke. This is similar to a MMA fighter. They are legally allowed to fight in the cage even to the point of serious damage. Other people who are not fighters don't get to complain about a fighter who is very aggressive and exploring different ways to hurt. If we don't like a particular fighter style, then we don't have to watch his/her fights. The same way we allow fighters to spar to get more effective, we must allow comedians to riff and explore all taboo topics to get funnier.

I think with offensive jokes they actually have to be funny. A lot of offensive jokes are not funny, witty or well-crafted. A lot of comedians rely on shock factor but there has to be more substance.

Never apologize for being "offensive" but if you are NOT pulling off edgy material because you have no craft or cleverness, that should be apologized for.

The time to apologize is to apologize for apologizing for a joke
