This is FANTASTIC!!! Tyne Daly is easily the most human and relateable of all the actresses who have played Mama Rose, which makes everything all the more heartbreaking.
I saw this production on Broadway. Of the three versions of Gypsy I've seen - the others were Lansbury (London) and LuPone (Broadway) - this was by far the most deeply satisfying as a cohesive job of storytelling, and I thought Tyne Daly was magnificent... and it was all the better for the show that although she was clearly the star, it was NOT a "star performance," but one seamlessly woven into the entire production. No video can reproduce the electric effect she had in the theater, but it's great that this is preserved. Thank you!
I have seen Lansbury, Peters, LuPone, Daly and I think Delores Gray was by far the best overall. Daly's acting was superior to the others, LuPone's final moment was heartbreaking and Lansbury's Some People was the best of the lot.
So beautifully said!!! I saw Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone and Imelda Staunton I felt privileged to be in these PHENOMENAL ladies presence!! They all blew me away!! If I had to pick 1 lady as my favorite Rose, Imelda Staunton was raw and it was like watching a volcano erupt!!!
TD has always had a natural easy and realistic way of delivering lines. Her performace here is just brilliant. Lupone: YUKK.... Peters: so so... Landsbury and Daly, win by a landslide
I saw this production and Patti LuPone’s at Encores in 2007. Ms. Daly showed vulnerability that Ms. LuPone didn’t. Perhaps because her wonderful belting got in the way. Ms. Daly’s performance is probably closest to Ethel Merman’s. Combine Daly’s acting and LuPone’s voice and you have something like the whole Merman package.
Also, does anyone have the video of Tyne Daly in the concert version of On the Town with the London Philharmonic? Her performance as Hildy is nonpareil. Audio is on cd; but the video was issued on laser disc only. I never should have gotten rid of it.
PBS very much wanted to record this production with Tyne Daly. but the owners were holding out for a big commercial production to bring them greater royal. Too bad.
Is this after they moved to the Marriott Marquis? Or still at the other theater. Only asking bc I knew Susan Cremin and wondering if that's her as Baby June.
I saw this production, Tyne was fabulous..the video is a pleasant reminder of this great evening of top notch theater.
Loved it! Twice pre-Broadway In Boston🎉❤
My first Mama Rose I saw, and still my favorite-and I saw Patti, Bernadette, Imelda, and Rosalind.

I got to see an evening performance pre-Broadway in Boston and loved it so much I brought a friend to the matinee the following day!

My cousin was in this company as one of the Hollywood Blondes and June’s understudy. I’m so glad to see this here!
So your cousin is Teri Furr?

I just love Tyne Daly in this role!
