Sola Melodica exists to uncover a glimmer of God in the art form of music. We focus primarily on hard rock, metal, punk, alternative, and occasionally outlaw country.
Good News and Bad News
Typically people want the bad news first.
The bad news is that we are all sinners. You are a sinner and I am a sinner. God’s creation was perfect. Our original ancestors, Adam & Eve, had direct access to God. He visited them and they would hang out together.
God is perfect and He created a perfect people.
Sadly, sin entered this perfect creation through an act of rebellion. That one act of rebellion threw everything into chaos.
A curse entered the earth and now every person born would be born under that sinful curse.
Many people will argue that at least they are not Hitler or Stalin. Most of us are not serial killers! We’re in relatively decent shape, or so we think.
It’s not that simple, though.
As Steve Taylor wrote in his song Jesus Is For Losers, “They don’t grade here on a curve, we both know what we deserve.”
I am guilty of sin and you are guilty of sin. “What sin?” you ask. Lying, stealing, envy, pride, the list goes on and on.
Each of which knocks us off of our “pedestal” of perfection.
If we boil this down to a court session we would be proven guilty. The prosecutor would present indisputable evidence of our misdeeds and transgressions.
Our "good works" don’t offset our sin.
Plus, there is no statute of limitations on our sin.
Justice demands recompense. The verdict would be swift and the judgment severe.
The Good News
God had a plan all along. True justice could not ignore these iniquities and transgression. The penalty had to sufficiently cover every sin that was committed in the past and any sin that would be committed in the future.
Yes, all of them.
As soon as the original sin
was committed God put His plan into motion.
Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, came to earth sinless and perfect. He lived His life free of sin and transgression. He healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the hungry, and loved fearlessly.
He was the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
A lamb without spot or blemish was sentenced to die a brutal death on our behalf.
Jesus was tortured without mercy. He was mocked, spat upon, cursed, and deserted by His friends.
The beating, according to Isaiah, was so ghastly that He could not be recognized as a human (Isaiah 52:14). He died a horrific death, gasping for air, nailed to a cross.
His death was only one part of the redemption story. The best part was death could not keep Him. He defeated death and conquered hell.
It’s written, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
The resurrection did not transpire until justification (justice), in the eyes of God, was achieved. The punches, whipping, cursing, crown of thorns, nailing, and betrayal were for you and were for me.
What Jesus endured was more violent and appalling than anything Quentin Tarantino could envision.
The price for our sins has been paid. There is no double jeopardy in the Kingdom of God.
Our sin is judged in Christ.
That, my friend, is Good News!
What’s our part to play in this Gospel plan? Not much, actually.
We acknowledge that we’re sinners and in need of a savior. We recognize that we’re incapable of saving ourselves and need a rescuer. We accept the atoning sacrifice and redemption that is found only in Jesus Christ and turn our lives fully over to HIM.
I encourage you to look up Psalm 51 and read it. It’s about a man who committed adultery and murder to cover his sin.
His heartfelt and sincere prayer just might be the inspiration you need to form your own prayer to God.

The cool thing that I noticed was when you mentioned the lyrics " I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to nail you back up." Your comment was that christ can only die for us once and it wont happen a second time. In another song by brand new titled Limousine it says
"In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah. He was bored and tired of my laments. Said 'I'd die for you one time, but never again.' "
That line hiits soo hard in that song.
that’s one of my favorite lyrics of all time
Love that you plug your son's band, that was such a wholesome moment! Made me smile, I'm sure they are awesome.
I'm non-religious but I've always appreciated the more spiritual songs like this.
I always felt the line about nailing Jesus back up was because hes afraid that when Jesus comes to him, he wont believe it and will want to crucify him for mistakenly feeling misguided or lied to.
That even with the proof in front of him he would still doubt his faith and that frightens him.
That's how I took it too!
Wow, that's interesting. I didn't think of that. Thanks for contributing to the conversation!
Another amazing song with biblical reference, of the same genre, is thrice “hold fast hope” which is a beautiful retelling of the Jonah story. I absolutely love brand new and this song. They are so strong lyrically. What I love a lot is the cynical and prideful talking to God, while also the singer speaks defeated and begging. It’s such a real emotional way of describing a believer’s struggle, while also showing hope and belief they can have.
Moving mountains by Thrice is by far my favorite. It follows 1st Corinthians ch 13, but from the perspective of someone who does all of the good deeds in the chapter . "Yeah moving mountains ain't no thing to me. I've faith enough to cast them to the sea, but I don't know the first thing about love."
Awesome
I always believed that this song was about someone struggling with the implications of human worthlessness at the core of Christianity, and trying to reconcile them with the idea that God loves human beings and has made a personal sacrifice to save them. Christianity, as I understand it, holds that all people are irredeemably sinful, and that they could never possibly get into heaven on their own -- but God sacrifices himself out of love on their behalf. If you really think about, it, though, that's kind of weird: the message is that, no matter how well you live your life, you're scum. You get God's love, but you could never deserve it.
So, you've got the narrator of the song: a profound believer who doesn't believe in *himself*. He's keenly aware of his religion's message about his sinful nature (for instance: "my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark") but also aware that God is, apparently, giving him a second chance. He's afraid of coming face-to-face with God and having to account for the fact that he's still a bad person ("I'm not scared to die -- I'm a little bit scared of what comes after"). What's more, he can't get the idea of Jesus' return out of his head: Jesus says that he'll come back subtly, and that true believers will know when it's happened. But what if the narrator's not good enough to know? What if he misses it, or worse, mistakes his Lord for an impostor and "crucifies" him all over again? These worries dominate the narrator's thoughts, and so, for all that his religion claims to offer him grace, it's only clouding his mind with pain and fear.
Wow, well done. Nice recap.
Enlightening. A few of the references I didn't know. Thanks
thank you casey.
One of my favorite songs and bands. God Bless!
Good reaction. I love Brand New they have really good lyrics
thank you!
I'm Chicago? Damn bet I'll def check your son's band 👌
Brand new is legit i recommend the whole album, one of my all time fav bands, top 5 even
This song is basically a musical incarnation of what the sins of despair and blasphemy of the Holy Spirit are.
U should take a listen to this whole album The Devil and God are raging inside of me. It's one of their best albums of all time. If you wanna have a sad experience, read the back story for the song Limousine before you listen to the song.
Yikes. I do like melancholy music. Thanks for the suggestion.
Definitely listen to The Devil and God are raging inside of me in its entirety!
Try reacting to Underoath - Some seek forgiveness, others escape !! This is 100% in your ballpark, I'd love to see you give it a go
Limousine by Brand New is also a recommendation. It's a true story about a little girl named Katy (or Katie, I forget) Flynn who was killed by a drunk driver.
The lead singer wrote from the mom's perspective, the drivers perspective, and his own perspective. Gut wrenching song.
Wow, that sounds like some potentially brutal lyrics. Thanks for the recommendation.
Here's what I get from beginning to end, I'm confused and I'm still confused..... That's where faith comes in
I’m pleasantly surprised you liked the line “ so what did you do those three days you were dead, cause this problem’s gonna last more than the weekend “
Most older folk I’ve gotten to listen to this song snark at that line.
Baptist problems 😂
Deciding not to comment. I love your breakdown, but I feel like there is a disconnect between what Christians believe and what they feel. How they reconcile those two is between them and God, but I do think this song shines a bit of a light on the struggle a lot of us feel. Love the song, love your breakdown, keep it up.
You should check out more brand new. Maybe sic transit gloria
Jesse Lacey was raised Christian or Catholic so this is rooted in religion. The underlying concepts are there
I absolutely love Brand New!
Would you be willing to do a reaction to ‘Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins’?
Couple more great songs are Wrong side of Heaven by Five Finger Death punch and Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Take care!
Totally agree. Those are definitely heavy hitters!
I’ve been an off and on atheist since I gave up on Mormonism at 15, but I think the analysis at the end is wrong. We aren’t turning out hate in factories figuratively. It is something literal and material when a whole group faces systemic abuse and rises up against it.
Sorry an added bit to this discussion is that this song made me believe in something at least a bit.
His lyrics are great no matter the song. One of my favorites is called "let's not shit ourselves (to love and to be loved)" I think you would like that one and others from Brand New.
I've been listening to brand new since '05 and have never heard that song.
I love Bright Eyes as well
Please react to Craig Morgan "The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost" he wrote it after the death of his teenage son.
Sounds super sad. I will check it out -- thank you for the suggestion.
No his reward was eternal life with his father
Can any words we use with any language describe God his will or even our own? Nooooooo
hmmmm....
So…I love the way that you were willing to listen to this song and take it as is.
I will also say that that the god of the New Testament is a truly horrible being. I used to be a hardcore Christian and then I read the whole Bible. Im so saddened by folks who claim the Bible says what it doesn’t say.
I'd love to speak with u
Really?Aww..wait, why? :)
Is you goal to justify the music yo hear or to understand it. Paying close attention. I'm rooting for you. Asking for a friend.
Great question and one I typically answer well at the intro of each video. I didn't complete my intro "spiel" in this video as I normally do.
I'm not trying to justify the music or songs - they are what they are. My goal is to interpret the lyrics through a biblical lens. There is a ton of music with biblical themes, references, inferences, and slight mentions.
I want to "mine" those songs and discuss them. I'm looking for a glimmer of God and redemptive qualities in the gift that is music.
"I have no use for cranks who despise music because it is a gift of God." - Martin Luther
I'm glad that you're rooting for me! Thank you!!
@@SolaMelodica A respectable response from a religious man to one who has found himself not to be in a sense. This is a breath of fresh air.
What did you do the three days you were dead.....not much said about this ever
Why the f did he not talk about how we "crucify" public figures
It’s funny how men of god have different titles. Jesus gave a few titles and if I’m not mistaken the rest are given by man
Shameless plug to this man of gods sons band
You are a criminal
The reason this song's lyrics might seem confusing at first is because he's kind of mixing his struggle with faith with his struggle with his own sexuality. The idea of pretty faces and being "put away" get darker when you consider he's been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct when they were minors and he was in his 20s.
Yikes. Wasn't aware of the accusations. Thanks for the heads up. We all are in need of grace and forgiveness.
It’s still relevant and relatable regardless of those accusations. Sin is dark regardless of the sin and cannot be in the eternal presence of God.
The fake ending is when Jesus Christ died and then resurrected
