Maazel and the Berlin players perform this music as if they believed in it. And in truth, Furtwaengler extended the early 20th-century harmonic vocabulary in quite original ways that permitted him to capture the profound bitterness of his era with tremendous innigkeit. Great as they were, Strauss and Pfitzner did not tread into the smoking heart of hell that Furtwaengler explored.

The programmatic titles of the first three movements were written into the score by Furtwängler. According to a notepad found after his death he wanted to call the last movement (missing in this recording) "Der Kampf geht weiter" ("The struggle goes on").

Amazing. I did not know Maazel ever conducted a Furtwängler symphony. With the Berliner Philharmoniker, too! Is this performance on a CD? I'm a Furtwängler fan and collect his music.
I am also subscribing to your channel. No - thank YOU!

      Mikhail Dubov
I looked up the WF/Maazel recording. It looks like an unofficial "not-exactly-legal" release. It might be very hard to find, so your upload is very welcome!
I looked at your own performances. I am now a fan of Nikolai Kapustin - until your video, I did not even know his name. The good news: his music is available and easy to buy.
      No - thank YOU!

Late-Romantic, somber (though, Movement III is triumphant), lyrical Symphony; a bit of Tchaikovskian lyricism is noticeable in movement I. Enjoyed it !

HI Mikhail, and many, many thanks for uploading this rare recording of WIlhelm Furtwangler's Symphony no. 3 with Lorin Maazel and the Berliner Philharmoniker. An outstanding performance and recording. But very difficult to locate if not impossible.
Therefore, do you recommend a CD of this work other than the Albrecht and the Staatskapelle Weimar, which is recorded EXTREMELY low?
And do you know if Furtwangler's grand Symphony no. 2 is available on mono LP vinyl?
    Thank you!

I know of 2 other recordings of No. 3 - One by Wolfgang Sawallisch on the Orfeo label and and another by Alfred Walter on Marco Polo/Naxos. My favourite recording of No. 2 remains the Barenboim, but I would not be surprised if you can find the composer's own Berliner Philharmoniker recording of it on vinyl on the used market. The BR Klassik label has a mono performance by Eugen Jochum, who was a stand in for the composer himself (who passed unexpectedly).

Mikhail Dubov you are indeed right. According to the Jochum CD's notes, Fu passed shortly before the performance, but it was Jochum's concert.

The Albrecht recording is great for an impression of the last movement which is a tour de force. For the first three movements though, I think this Maazel pirate recording is as good as it gets. Keilberth is irresponsibly fast and sloppy, although the premiere with Berlin is a bit better than the Bamberg performance. The Sawallisch is also great, better than Keilberth, but perhaps too 'civilized'. I think these are pretty much all on youtube now.

Sure thing, but it's not a great performance by any means.

I keep asking around, can anyone confirm what if any influence Furtwängler the composer had on Pettersson the young composer when Furtwängler conducted Pettersson the violist in Stockholm.

Ehm... where has the fourth movement got to?

    • @joralemonvirgincreche
      @joralemonvirgincreche 5 років тому +1

The whole symphony with the fourth movement wasn't performed until 1986, according to wikipedia.

Wikipedia indicated that the fourth movement was incomplete when Mr. Furtwangler died. HE planned for it as a complete symphony, but was unable to complete last movement. TOO BAD!

The last movement was completed, but Furtwängler thought about to revise it. Because he died before he could do this, Mrs. Elisabeth Furtwängler at first thought of the piece as an "unfinished" work and did only allow performances of the first three movements. Yehudi Menuhin convinced her in 1986 that the fourth movement should be played as well.

Too bad the best performance of this symphony in my opinion is Menuhin's broadcast recording conducting the ORF orchestra in a centenary concert in memoriam of Furtwangler. The recording is available somewhere, but no one seems to be able to find it. I have a copy of it, but the recording quality is extremely poor and I could not manage to even remaster it. That recording is truly fierce and intense which is what exactly I thought Furt would have wanted. When I was younger, I listened to this symphony for the first time and fled immediately because of the depressive vibe it gave me. Then I got older, and this is no longer depressing anymore, because Furt has truly captured the bitterness and the struggle a man has to experience throughout his lifetime. Unlike other more "professional" composers who write for a living, for Furt there is no any other reason to pen any musical work other than absolutely necessary as the only conduit to vent his innermost feeling - this symphony is his life, viewed from the angle of an old man near the end of his life having experienced the most tragic two wars in human history, and our lives fighting our own daily wars no matter large or small as well.

@@ClassicalRaritiesChannelSWF emailed me after the passing of their former president that they do not have it, and I think they probably really do not know where it is, but I have seen a radio version floating around somewhere recorded by a Taiwanese Furt fan many years ago.
