Finally! I really wanted to like the other pickups so far but all of them left me wanting. This pickup does it for me. Great sounding. The best so far! Also, please go back to the black pickguard. It's much better, IMO.
This pup sounds killer! I think this one may be the best so far. It has killer growl with good top and bottom end. I really like how it is not a super hot pickup as well.
4:08 stock parallel 4:30 delano parallel 4:58 stock series 5:21 delano series Usually I prefer the parallel sound but in this case I have to admit that the best sound is Delano with series mode!
This pickup shines with another pickup configuration..J, P or another MM pickup on the "neck" with the Single oil option... but again..Love this preamp...Cheers Lobster 🤗
Been waiting for this one. I have a Cort GB74 GIG and this has the same type of pickup in the bridge position but it’s a Cort designed pup. Been looking to swap this pup in it but didn’t want to shell out the $ until I could hear a sound sample. Very impressive. Thanks Lobster. Your channel rocks.
it’s cool checking watching this vid , I have the ulyate hybrid mm pickup which is the same configuration from years back which has sounded really good on my musicman sub bass
Definitely the darkest/least bright pickup so far. Really like the tone though, but I think that the Turner Multicoil is the best balanced one so far. It had a good presence without being too bright.
As usual I auto like every video you release. This series is one of your better ideas. In 2017 or so, EB Stingrays were still about $1400/$1500. Then a few years later, $2300 and now, $3K. I think it's ridiculous. There was no reason to go so far. Even the Ray34's are now $1200+ new. No thanks. So this series of yours gives a great look into ideas for people wanting a badass Stingray sound for a cheaper Stingray style bass they still find comfortable and can set up well. I'll never be a EB customer again and I am incredibly disappointed that they chose to eliminate the weekend warrior working man earner from their roster and pretend everything they do is 4K+ worthy.
The sterling sub bass is phenomenal. The neck is indeed more narrow and thin than a ray34 and EBMM. The neck here is more in the jazz bass territory but I like it. Satin finish on the neck is smooth, truss rod works great, frets are not sharp. Upgrading electronics is a must though to make it a serious bass. Thankfully bass is inexpensive stock and is a perfect platform to mod. If only albridge would restock their MM style bridges as seen on all of lobster's SUBs.
I'd love to move the jack socket to the side and install a four way rotary switch. That way you could get jazz coil / mm coil / series / parallel selections....maybe even throw in a dummy coil to make the single coil selections relatively noiseless
I ❤ your channel and the honest reviews . I can’t appreciate enough your work . After watching your „code red“ video I build a Bass-Body and out some emgs in it .
Ooooh, you're missing out by not checking the J setting! This pickup actually has a proper J coil which is tapped when in MM mode. So the J coil alone is much higher impedance than the MM coil. In MM mode, only part of the J coil is used and wired in parallel to the full, lower impedance MM coil. So you get both very convincing J and MM sounds. I have it paired with another Delano J pickup in my Clover Apeiron 5, and I love it! It has a switch to change between passive J mode and active MM mode. I changed it to a 3-way switch to also get an active J mode. Luckily Delano provides wiring diagrams so I could figure out how to do it.
Hey! Could you please share the wiring diagram you used to add the active J mode with a 3-way switch? I want to do that exactly on a project bass with a J neck pickup and Delano Hybrid bridge pickup, but haven't been able to figure out how to do it yet :(
@@pennyscissors8385 Sure, it's on page 13/14 of the installation guide on the Delano website. With a 2-way switch, in passive mode, it's split, J/J with passive tone blend, in active mode, it's J/MM with EQ. If you use a 3PDT or 4PDT on/on/on switch, you can add an active J/J mode - it's the same wiring then, just make sure to use the right pins on the switch to split the pickup (6 bottom pins in the diagram) and keep the EQ (3 upper pins in the diagram) in the middle switch position. Based on the PDF, active passive J/J mode is this: *1-2* 3 *4-5* 6 *7-8* 9 Active J/MM mode is like this: 1 *2-3* 4 *5-6* 7 *8-9* And active J/J mode would be this: 1 *2-3* *4-5* 6 *7-8* 9
I have a Delano AL/V4 in the bridge position and an FE/M2 in the neck position on my Copley. I love how they sound and have always been curious about this one. And it sounds amazing for it's relatively low output.
I have 2 basses with this pickup - a Cort GB74 and GB94. I want to mod the GB74 further by routing space for a P pickup instead of the J neck pickup. I know you haven’t featured it in this video but the J bridge coil also sounds good. A P neck pickup would give the 3 classic bass sounds in 1 bass.
Hey Lobster. Another interesting video. Good job. I'm a huge fan of Delano. but I understand your comments on it. 1 ~ being it's being used out of its normal context for design. And 2 ~ it being a little lack luster on the tone. One thing for sure is, it's a big improvement over the stock pickup. Which is really harsh on the high end and lots of extra harmonics being picked up by the coils. Until we groove again 🦞🎸✌️😎👍🎸🦞
Very impressive, though I agree, not as impressive as some of the others I've heard so far (i.e. Turner Multicoil). I purchased a similar MM hybrid PUP from a company called Proto Guitars. Perhaps you could get your hands one of those for comparison as well. I love mine.
I'm not super impressed with the tone, I prefer the Nordy ones so far. But the fact that with this one it's possible to get a "parallel" tone out of its series mode is a big advantage for those who want the treble bite but without the hum. So I think it does have a cool appeal for a certain audience.
I have a 6 string bass, is there any noticeable drawbacks about using a 5 string model with 5 poles on it? The actual dimensions of the pickup is the same and it does fit same as other Delano pickups that are actually advertised for 6 strings like the MC series. I'd love this hybrid desing for the bridge position, does anyone know for sure if that's a good idea?
I thought that most MM-style pickups are wired in series with some of them (like the Delanos) having the ability to be switched between those 2 modes and single-coil. The exception is the Aguilar MM that is hard-wired in parallel and can't be switched to other modes. It is logical that a "parallel" setup would give less output than 2 coils in series.
I gave my sbmm ray4 with the pbass pups in the neck to my niece for her 16th birthday but I still have the body of the pbass and some extra pbass pups do you think this would be suitable in the bridge instead of the usual j bass (I prefer long scales anyways) if you ever got the chance could you compare a jazz pup to that side of the Delano for us?
That's actually because it shouldn't be wired like a traditional humbucker. The J coil can actually be tapped, so in MM mode you wire more or less half of the J windings in parallel to the MM coil, which gives you that classic StingRay sizzle, scoop and punch. In J mode, the full J coil is used (which has a lot higher impedance than the MM coil), giving you a very authentic J sound. I have it in a Clover Apeiron, paired with another J single coil and the matching Delano preamp, and it comes closer to both a Music Man and a vintage Fender J than any other hybrid bass I tried. It's only a bit tighter than a StingRay because the pickup is closer to the bridge.
You used the wrong pickup as the Hybrid is intended to be used along with the JC 4 AL/H, to be used alone as you did. You should have used the Delano JAY-RAY 4 which has been designed to be used alone, in the way you used. I think you should read the specs before doing some reviews about something you used in the wrong way.
Finally! I really wanted to like the other pickups so far but all of them left me wanting. This pickup does it for me. Great sounding. The best so far! Also, please go back to the black pickguard. It's much better, IMO.
Thank you! Hahaha yes I HATE this tort. The stock pickguard was slightly misrouted and I had this one handy lol
@@LowEndLobster Imo the tort guard makes the black pickups easier to see on camera.
This pup sounds killer! I think this one may be the best so far. It has killer growl with good top and bottom end. I really like how it is not a super hot pickup as well.

Gotta say I prefer the sounds of stock pickup, across the board. Sounds more raw / less polite and refined. Like a Stingray should IMO
Very nice sounding, probably the best series/parallel combo yet.

This pick up has the most girth. Not too trebly like the others. My favorite so far.
i've been looking to replace the pickups in my harley benton mp4 enhanced, especially the mm pup, and this series is just perfect. thanks, lobster😋
Like this pickup, I do. My favorite so far.

This definitely sounds more tame than the Nordstrands and less trebley than the stock pickup even, but it still has a nice smooth, round sound.

This is the first time EVER where, to me, the stock pickup wins...hands down. I'm totally shocked.
Delano makes one called a Ray Jay (or Jay Ray?) that's basically a Hybrid pickup without the fact period-correct switching options
I prefer this one to the others so far 👍

Very strange pickup, wired in series, it sounds brighter than in parallel (and as bright as the stock pickup wired in parallel)

No, the original Stingray sound is the pickup wired in parallel. That was how Leo Fender originally designed it.

Can I have a link to the bridge you got for this?
man ive been waiting since june to get my Albridge bridge for my sterling project, anyone heard anything?
Are any of these pickups Bebe approved?...if not they aren't the best! 😻
That doesn't sound like an ernie ball bass anymore. Def doesn't have as much punch and sounds too muted in the upper mids? It feels very boxed in.
That's how I felt too. It's really interesting to see the opinions and thoughts of others with all the different flavors we're showcasing
That's actually because it shouldn't be wired like a traditional humbucker. When comparing these pickups, stock vs options, is the preamp the same?
yes
"It doesn't sound bad" lol
Stock.
Nope. Stock pickups win.
