Konica Minolta Booklet Finisher Options

- Briefly share my experience with three of the available Konica Minolta bookletmakers. These machines create a saddle stitched book or booklet. They gather, staple, fold and trim the paper. They all have their pros and cons.
As someone who cut their teeth in the industry in the early 70's and hasn't been involved since the mid 90's it's amazing to see what can be done now. Thanks for showing this.
You bet!
Wow I'm a km tech..I must say those must be the cleanest finishers I've ever seen..20 years in the game and still learning..thanks alot
You bet!
Hello. Let me know if you are available to phone service a Konica Minolta c1060L printer with finisher, like on the video. My finisher is not folding and stapling.
Thank you, sir.
Booklet makers are a special kind of torture, but inline punches are demons incarnate! Thanks for sharing!
LOLOL! I guess its a good thing that I don't do much punching. Hahaha!
I completely disagree. Our GBC punch runs non stop till it needs waste dumped or until it needs a bit of oil. Drastically more reliable than the Ricoh it's attached to.
working in a print shop and getting used to 3070, your videos are a GREAT help thanks a lot!
Thank you!
That sheet rotation system is very clever. Thanks for the great explanation.
You got it!
We just picked up a used machine and it came with a plockmatic square edge booklet maker. It does the page flip a bit differently and only 35 sheets. It's pretty cool because it will work offline. The page flip is fascinating, never thought to run it with the covers open. :-)
Oh yeah, running machines with the covers open is my favorite!
Love your channel. I ran a printshop from 1987 to 1994 and printed a publication. Repaired and figured out a Pittney Bowes 30 bin Ferris wheel collator. Amazing tech for back then. I just sold my AB Dick 360 because my Konica 951 is amazing. I can push the button and go to bed. However, I am trying to print a simple booklet of 32 pages on letter size and only four sheet will print when I try and use the folding/stitching settings. It works on a straight print.. where I have to fold and staple it manually. I have tried every setting and have 12 books here with all kinds of sideways printing and as I say, four sheets.. not the 8 I need in a 32 page letter folded in half. Pulling my hair out soon trying to find the answer. Using InDesign CC 2022. Also tried making a pdf and printing from Acrobat. Same thing. Using booklet printing. And the Konica printer setting booklet and fold and stitch. It's probably something simple. HELP? I can't find anything online to sort this out.
The printer might not fold and stitch thick paper. Could it be the paper gsm setting on the printer? Try a thinner setting.
Good video. Some additional info: (1) Konica doesn't make the FS-612 finisher anymore. It's not an option on any of KM's current production machines. (Thank God.) (2) The SD-510 option for the FS-532 can fold and stitch up to 25 sheets *by spec*, but at 20# bond/50# offset, the spec is 20 sheets. (3) Great segment on the SD-506, which is a workhorse, but there is also now an SD-513, which also does face-trim, but there are options for it to do top & bottom slit (to get full-bleed booklets); for squareback (rolls out the spine fold); and for creasing. Think of the SD-513 as the economy version of a Watkiss or Plockmatic.
Some additional thoughts: (1) It's important, when talking about bookletmaking, to discuss its impact on productivity. The more a machine "thunks," the fewer finished pieces you'll get out (the print engine has to wait on the bookletmaker to do its thing). (2) It's also important to mention the impact of paper weight (and coated stocks) on the number of sheets it's possible to stitch.
Bookletmakers are a careful decision, and any sales or technical conversation should include a discussion of limitations as well as capabilities. Always ask to see detailed specifications or the Customer Expectation Guide.
Great points! Always grateful when someone can add to my impromptu videos! :) Thanks!
Great value in this vid,
My workplace just purchased an SD-510 inline booklet finisher along side Konica's new TU-510 Trimmer unit and this really gave me a good idea as to what I'll be dealing with regarding the SD-510 which looks to be comparable to your SD-506.
Thanks
Glad you liked it! Some of the newer Konica finishers do a three side trim. That would be awesome!
Commander Happy, you probably mean they got an SD-513 booklet finisher (the one that can make full-bleed booklets). In combination with the TU-510 trimming unit, the optional internal trimmer for the bookletmaker is not necessary, as the TU-510 takes over the top and bottom slitting. (Not to mention all the other things that it can do.) It's a great combination. Good luck with it!
tuesday i will get the new konica minolta c4080 with finisher .. i can't wait to try it .. great videos as always thank you !!
Exciting! Have fun!
I have a 4080 with the 506 it is doing a great job. Still trying to learn how to make the adjustments on the 506 but when get it right it looks great.
Missing the SD-513. It’s an upgrade to the 506, and it can slit, crease, face trim, and do both standard & square fold.
Full disclosure: I do work for Konica Minolta as a Service Engineer on the Production line specializing on the C3070 & C3080. Before working for KM, I owned and operated a print shop for 15 years.
Yes, I forgot to mention the newer finishers. I need to get one of those!
How is the C3080? I am about to get one. Can you tell me whether you needed a 3 phase or just a 1 phase electricity set up? thanks!
Love the videos. Do you know if the KM C3080 needs a 1 phase or 3 phase electricity setup? Thanks.
Of note, the SD-513's on our Accurio c6100 and 6120 are pretty awesome! You can perform inline square folding and 3-sided trimming which comes in handy for customers looking for something that lays flat with bleeds and is bookshelf friendly without going the perfect binding route. My only cons: (1) it performs the top-and-bottom trims before folding or stitching the books, which can lead to a skew or jogging problems on some coated stocks and odd-size books; (2) it definitely slows the machine down; (3) you need to pair it with one of Konica's post-insertion units since it doesn't feature a cover feeder; (4) its creasing function requires a technician to adjust if things skew. It may sound like a bunch of cons, but they honestly don't present too many problems in the day-to-day. Plus, we were spoiled by Plockmatic bookletmakers on a previous machine lol.
Agreed, those new Konica finishers are nice!
Cool - But no print to the edge in the inline production. Vi have the Xerox Versant series, and they have the opportunity of trimming all 3 sides and then remove the bleed. Also squarefold option.
It’s pritty nice with it all as inline. Just paper in one side and finish booklet out end the other side. But it often takes a lot of time to produce that way - especially if you want a cover with heavier gsm..
Yes, most of the new finishers have a full bleed option. That would be a must for me on my next one.
I work on most of the konica finishers. The SD-506 works well when it works. The $35,000 dollar price tag scares away a lot of small shops with a limited budget. You may want to mention the SD-513 which does side trimming. It is a bit smaller than the Watkins. Trimming boards are a consumable item with the SD-506, show a video on how to change those sometime.
The SD-506 is never sold for $35,000 unless they see you coming.
Yes, those new Koinca booklet makers are very cool!
Always watting for your vedio love frm 🇮🇳🥰
Awesome! Thanks!
Love the Channel , Can you send a Link to this Visual Configurations for the printer . there is not much info about the options
i saw this page in 6 Min And 22 Seconds i would like to look at it
Thank you for your The Info you are sharing
Where can I buy the horizon SPF-20A Stitch & Fold?
I have the budget one that you described and the final (centre) page is not dropping into the stapler fast enough meaning that sheet doesn't get stapled in the centre. Have you any idea why this happens?
Thanks for the explanation. Does the 506 finisher do the face trim off line(thru the inserter)?
The 506 will do the face trim inline. Its located on the bottom left side and occurs after its folded.
Hi Dan, love your channel. Slightly off topic but can I ask you a question about your KM 3070. I use the same model and I have a strange problem. Basically, I only print greeting cards and when I print a design that has a lot of magenta within the design - I get a terrible issue with static sticking sheets together. Now the static does not cause an issue during the printing process but I use a Duplo card cutter creaser (superb machine) to finish my cards and the static causes multiple double feeds during a run. If the design is not 'magenta heavy' then I never have a problem ... weird! Any ideas as I know your are a genious with these machines. Thanks and regards.
That is weird. I am not a genius! LOL. Not sure why it happens with just magenta. maybe try stacking face up instead of face down. So it images the opposite side first? Could also put some anti static tinsel somewhere. If static is a problem I can sometimes resolve it by fanning out the sheets on the cutter table to neutralize the static.
@@justaprinter Hi Dan, thanks for your time with my question. This is deffo a weird one. I tried the tinsel with limited success. I'll have to persevere with this. Thanks again, really enjoy your channel.
4x9 booklet maker options or solutions? My booklet maker on my Iridesse does not seem to go smaller than 4". Am I wrong to think inline booklet makers do not trim 4". It seems 4.27" is the lowest I can go. anyone out there can share their experiences?
Excellent video!
Thank you!
Another nice video! Isn't the biggest question online or offline? How do you look at this, isn't a finisher if you have offline finishing equipment a bad investment, also because inline is always friction?
I would agree that a finisher is a bad investment if you have offline finishing. In-line is convenient depending on the job though. It's also good to have options. I can be making booklets inline while printing and making booklets offline. I also bought the inline sd506 before I had the collator.
Does Konica have the option for a Plockmatic? I work with Ricoh machines, but we have the Plockmatic and it can square up the spine so almost look like a perfect bound book. Pretty nice.
No, Plockmatic and Konica currently don't play well together. :) I doo like the look of those square back books.
Nice video!
I learned hard way about that entry level booklet maker finisher. I was started to looose my mind because it didn't want to print in main paper output. I find out that it prints on upper paper output by accidnt (🤣)
Same here!
stupid question: is there a staple finisher with 2x center staples? i want to make booklets up to 50 sheets (from A4 paper, black/white print), but without folding, so they are flat for shipping. i have a low budget (1000 eur), so im looking at used Konica Minolta bizhub 363/364 printers with FS-534 Staple finisher.
currently i do manual finishing from 4x Brother HL-L5100DN printers, which is too slow / too much work.
I have never tried that but I bet the Konica finishers would do it
I have the smallest finished because I want advised right how ever it’s a slow workhorse it gets the job done mostly I’ve run small to large runs on it from 10 booklets to a few thousand though the sheet count is 20 after 15 sheets of 100lbs gloss text the fold doesn’t sit as flat any more.
Yes, that is a downside that the booklets are not flat. I typically find if you pack them tight in a box, by the time they get to your customer they are flat. :)
@@justaprinter depending on the quantity of booklets I normally take 2/4 at a time and put the paper cutter clamp down on them for a few seconds
Great!!! like always. I'll still stitching offline, because does finisher use to be so expensive and take so long to recover the invest.
Hugs..
By the way Dan, do you go to print united exposition in october?
Thats smart, don;t do it unless its worth it. I'm not going to exposition. It had been many years since I went to one.
@@justaprinter ok. So, see u next.
Could the hole punch be reconfigured to put in a single centre hole in a booklet on the opening side. A booklet calendar with the hole punch providing the hanging hole inline?
No it cannot. That would be very handy though!
Great Video! When I use the KM SD-506, I noticed a lot of static and pages sticking together. Any idea?
I mostly run uncoated so I don't see much static. Having the RU-516 does a great job too.
There is some factory modification on sd 510 with electrostatics....there is now frames with white rollers to prevent statism.
You can try to adjust the electric value of antistatic option to see in negative or positive value if it change something....
It s in advanced paper configuration, last page setup
We cant get the machine to staple past 4 sheets. Is there something we are doing wrong? We have the FS-532
I’m guessing the weight would be more important there may be something in the adjustments on the machine . Check the setting under finishing in the fiery imp file
Hi! Dan, Do you bone the fold after they come off the finisher to get them to lay flatter?
No, I find that if I pack them in the box tight, they flatten out quite a bit.
May i ask you about Epson new inkjet work force printer the say it's chipper than lizer and faster
What do you think about that
They are cheaper and faster, however the print quality is not as good as laser. There is currently a place for both machines depending on your needs.
Awesome, awesome, and some awesome!
You rock! Thanks!
Would really like to get a nice kM with a booklet maker But don't know where i can source one of those machines
CHeck ebay
@@justaprinter thanks man been doing so. Thought there was another place. Thanks much
Another great video! Thank you!
You are welcome!
I'm running an older C6000L with the finisher(FS-612) that has the option to fold, however, I'm having a hard time to figuring out how to make it fold. The option is usually just greyed out.
Hmm, maybe there is something to change in service mode? Not sure.
@@justaprinter I do understand that there will be differences with the older command workstation 5 that controlls my konica, however, would you mind including your software setup for something to be folded in one of your videos?
What do you do for a booklet that has say 100lb cover? Do you have a machine that will do both cover and text inline or do you just print them separately so you can score the covers
I have done them inline without a score and they turn out ok. Typically 80lb cover is the highest I'll go for that.
Thanks for valuable information
Absolutely!
Hey Dan, I've had FS 532's and have never been impressed with them, my current 3070 has one and I can't even run a 8 page on 100lb gloss book without at least one sheet skewing every 5-8 booklets. Do you actually run gloss book booklets without issue?
Konica service engineer here. Those saddle stitchers have always had issues with static. Konica released a new mod kit for them recently that works very well. They can be tricky to install but I’d recommend getting in touch with your countries service dept about it. The mod consists mainly of a replacement guide for the stacking section that now has rollers to reduce static binding.
@@marklynam6320 Thanks but I don't think static is an issue....I also have issues with 60lb offset. Only issues with 8.5 x 11 booklets....8.5 x 5.5 run well.
I typically only run 60lb text for inline booklets, and only a few pages. I do see on thicker booklets with gloss cover that the fold isn't always at the stitch. Could be dirty rollers maybe? But most often I run that off line.
Thank you Dan
You bet.
Love your vides
Thank you sir!
Hi, can you guide me how to replace the Conveyance Guide Plate /1 A04D700401. thank you
Sorry, my printers dont have that. Not sure what to do.
Aqui en Santo Domingo da mucho trabajo encontrarlos y cuando lo encuentras cuesta lo mismo que la impresora.
Parece que las máquinas fuera de línea serían mejores para ti.
Excellent!
That's a lot of pages. Our 'lil Xerox Booklet Maker doesn't get more than like 10 sheets? At least for stiching. It can split up folded pages so there's that, at least.
Still using it for a lot of things, trimming it by hand on the guillotine. Then again, booklets are more of a rare thing around here these days.
Agreed, thats a lot of pages. I should really try a 200 page booklet sometime.
Thanks, you do oem printing for jd? 🫶👍🤠👍👍
I have a xerox 95 with a booklet maker, but I do not use it, I like to do brochures with plockmatik bk 5030 more.
Hi from Ukraine.
Hi from Pennsylvania!
Thank you for showing us the integrated booklet maker on your KM printer. As my experience is with conventional fold, stitch and trim processes, I stand back in horror at these "amalgamed systems"! The sheet path from the end of the printing section into the booklet maker station looks like a real nightmare.
It breaks the basic golden rule of the machine processing of paper - "Shortest Sheet Travel". It must be difficult to control and keep accuracy within the collated sets of sheets with all of the changes of direction before stitching and folding. I tip my hat to you sir! I
I did work for a company who operated two Duplo collate/stitch/fold systems. The stitching heads each used a cartridge (shaped like a snail shell) which contained a roll/strip of flat lengths of wire. Theses wires were formed into staples, driven through the paper and clenched to form a stitch. What kind of system does your KM use for wire stitching? Thank you again. Stay safe and well.
The KM stitcher uses the exact some type of staples in a snail shell roll. Interesting.
Please see our machine. It will square paper perfectly and best with productions.
Will do!
Watkiss and plockmatic are great for booklets.
Agreed!
super good
Thanks!
You need the SD-513!!!
Yes, that is a nicer finisher for sure. I'll add it to my list.
As a consumer of printed things, I mistrust machines that stitch then fold. There are few things worse than a booklet that's stitched just that far from the fold line that you cannot open half of it.
LOLOL. You are so right!
@HenryLoenwind. You may already know this. You need some weight in the fold rollers, held by strong springs/bearings within substantial side frames to fold accurately along the line of the stitches on the spine. All machinery has a "compromise" somewhere in it's design and build. The KM is no exception!
Our FS532 keeps jamming when folding papers... I'm so disappointed
Clean the rollers. I bet there is something you can do
Plz share your location
The new AccurioPress C4080-C4070 and C7100-C7090 have better inline finishers but I'll go with Plockmatic finishers which are compatible with most production press printers like Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Canon, Xerox...
Check this booklet maker : ua-cam.com/video/fAueMHEaFRU/v-deo.html
Nice! I didn't know Plockmatic would link up to Konica. Those new finishers are nice!
