We love your videos but these last two with your wife discussing your family needs have really struck a chord with us and resonated with our thinking too. So fantastic, thank you.
We bought 20 year old Aussie made VAN. Couldn't justify the price of new Chinese made caravans. I've upgraded the battery system, suspension and installed bunks for the kids. Amazing memories made and more to come.
Comfortable camping vs compromised caravanning vs mobile moteling.... you're 100% on stages of life and your personal needs. It's the nature connection for me and also the travelling compromises, where you can and can't take them, mega steps in fuel use reducing range & sheer size differences. Really depends on were your happy place is hey, what you value as important and being honest on where you're actually going to be going. Any decision someone makes, enjoy what you have!
Gday Harry and so nice to have you back Sam - we’ve missed you!! We went from swags in a tent with 3 boys, to a full 22’ VAN with en-suite and bunks!! Boys have since grown and we’ve upgraded to not include space internally for them!! So what suits you NOW, but my advice, what ever makes the entire process easier while you’ve got babies the more you’ll get out and enjoy. You can always downgrade as the boys get older. My 2 cents worth, go the full van ‘for now’. And yes, I’m the wife that drags husband away!! He introduced me to camping and 30 years later I’d prefer to be away full time 😳😜
Hi Mate we have a family of 4 and we have gone from soft floor camper to full van with tinny I don’t do 4wd with the “VAN” that’s for swags. it’s so good to do a jumping holiday where your not staying long. It’s so good having everything at your fingers. Van life is awesome👍👍
The older we get the more comfort we want. It is a progression though life from tents to camper trailers to caravans and then perhaps motorhomes. We still have tents and camping gear but we are using it less and less. The thing we miss about tenting I guess it that feeling that you are closer to nature. Caravans and motorhomes really remove that close connection but as my joints get worse and worse and old age starts to bite, having the additional comfort is no longer just something I want but something I need.
Always entertaining!! We love our camper trailer but would consider upgrading to a van one day. Laughed out loud with the “wet tea bag as a pillow and a hessian bag” comment. 😂
Great ep Van vs Hybrid vs Camper - I can see what you mean and think different stages of life bring different needs. Also quality. Having broken a cheap import I see the value in a good Aussie made product.
Your spot on guys, weve had a camper trailer for 10+yrs enjoying nature and just getting away from it all,but now getting older and fed up with setting up/down in rain so its time to go hybrid for the next part of our lives...No kids so more room in a smaller van as its just to sleep in not live in,outside is for living lol.We are looking at $60k as anything above that you might aswell buy a caravan. cheers for honest review
I just got back from a 6000+km trip in my 105 Cruiser towing my nearly 40 year old Jayco 15ft caravan (Met you in Brisbane, I was the one from Tassie!) Admittedly, its had a fair few mod cons added (Solar, hot water, diesel heater, toilet) But my mid 30's self and my mum weren't left wanting for anything, stayed in a mix of free camps, hip camps and caravan parks. Total value of my set up would be under 30k, So was very much a smug mode engaged parking next to 300k setups!
A Van is always a compromise and you hit the nail on the head, not only the price difference between them all plus the modifications required or replacement of your vehicle. The big one is what you are using it for and how often you use it. Fantastic episode n love your insight
A basic hybrid beds only inside everything else out side 13ft follows along well through bush and still has the basic things good solar fridge freezer diesel hot water and heating a DVD player for the kids the best compromise we found when upgrading
We had dreams of renovating our old Viscount Van (1970's) and realised we'd spend more time (and money) working on it than getting out and exploring. We opted for a camper trailer and it really suits our current situation. There is no perfect setup - it just depends on what you want to do, where you want to go and who's going with you. I can certainly see us in a hybrid van in the next few years. I appreciate your perspective on this.
I agree with your summation, we started wish tents, "TheTaj Matent" my wife called it, then whenever we had one child we bought the Goldstream Off-road Storm Camper trailer which we loved until with a new 11 month old in Tassie it was bucketing down and I had to set the trailer up on my own in the dreadful thunderstorm, when back in NSW at the next van and camping show we went for the off-road poptop with shower toilet combination and have never looked back. I am on my own now in my 60s "except for my little Rat terrier" lol and am still enjoying caravaning and spoilt nowadays with Solar, Diesel Heaters, Inverters, Ensuite and Induction cooking, love you Channel and have bought a few extras I have seen on it like your fire wind guard/heat reflector. Keep it up please. "Van"
I got my scout partially based on your reviews of the frontier. As a solo traveler I love the fact that I can have a comfortable sleeping space set up within 5 minutes
I lived in a Van in uni and know what that can be like, but I am intrigued by the hybrid. I’m 58 now and still using a swag for solo camping and a tent for couples, but had avoided vans until now. You simply can’t go as far and it’s a big investment unless you get out there often enough. ROI. But I would certainly consider a hybrid as part of my retirement. Great Ep from both of you, the ex-chef and butler.
Agreed a really decked out camper trailer ticks the box. Once you have to dry even the smallest bit of material before longer storage then the size doesn’t matter. Don’t ever get a van though, that would annoy any group over two
This is an awesome episode, we were looking at the cub hybrid at the caravan show recently two separate reviews from you both were great! Showing how much easier it is with your little ones also shows it can be used as a couple or FAMILY! Harry I’m sorry we didn’t make it to meet you in Brisbane but.. baby showers are important too 😅
Good insights. Was great catching up with you in Brissy. I think from the chat we had and this video it really cements in for me that a frontier is a great point for me and my tween kids, with the older one moving out into a swag soon. Then once we've done all the really difficult tracks and want to take it a bit easier on main roads we'll look at the C16 van. Hopefully by then there's a few floating around second hand
Really enjoy all your vids but great to see your family and how you fit them into everything else you do with a van or otherwise, this is the dream. Thank!
great video. need to remember you are comparing a hybrid with a small caravan that's only slightly bigger. Cubs do well in keeping the vans narrow. it will be a different experience in an average size 20ft full width caravan. thanks harry
I met an older couple at William Creek park and had a long chat about this comparison. They started with swags and worked their way up to a Tri Axle caravan. They have worked out the best is a 14ft Off Road Pop Top caravan with shower and toilet. When the boss says they are sick of travelling they set up camp where ever they are. After 10 years I have settled on a 15ft Off Road Pop Top caravan with shower and toilet. 🙂 So he was right.
We picked up our VAN last week and taking it for a spin this week back to my home town for a visit. Headed off around aus for a few years mid next year.. thanks for all the great info and keep up the great work 👍👍 can't wait to get stuck into some of your recipes on the road
It’s great the way you explain things and show the pros and cons. We had a nice Hybrid Van but it was too big to get into certain camp sites so we had to down size….
Was great to get the thoughts of both of you on each Van each having there own different needs has given me something to think about as will be retiring in the near future.A great one with kids around.👍 Cheers Wombat 🐾🐾🤗🐻🐼
we are going through the "what to choose" aspect now.....I am totally over the tent camping. my kids are 13 and 8, so camper trailer looks the way to go......
Gday Harry. Firstly, love the videos. I want to thank you for taking the time to talk to us at the Perth show on Sunday about your Cub Frontier. Everything you said was taken into consideration and having gotten a quote from them on the day, we decided to sleep on it. Well its been nearly a week, and today, Friday arvo, ive gone into ORE here in Perth and put a deposit on a new Cub Frontier. I know you took my name down so you can make a case with Cub for an upgrade 😉, so just so you know, my name you wrote down has transferred into an actual sale. Thanks again mate, love the content, keep up the great work!
The new so called off-road full height caravans which are all around $100k & up (say around 19' to 21') weigh an absolute ton to tow and are way too tall in total height for wind resistance & are top heavy. So many people are taking on debt to finance these vans which is madness. We own a 2001 Coromal Seka 535 pop top dual axle/independent susp van and they are lightweight/ low height for towing and and a dream to tow & easy to set up in very quick time. The H16 40sec time to raise the roof we can do that in like 10seconds by hand whch is so easy. We owned a full height 18' Roma caravan which are wide & tall, but the Coromal is a breath of fresh air to tow and added bonus it can get into most offroad campsites
Great vids on the hybrid and vans… have been looking at these for a bit alongside a few others… found your thoughts and inputs very useful! Thank you!❤
Harry summed it up nicely The weather has a lot to do with the enjoyment of camping so short planned trips can avoid this so a camper trailer is ideal Longer trips where you can’t plan the weather a van is a better alternative and if you prefer remote camping away from parks a for extended periods a hybrid would suit provided you don’t have a big family Long trips on the bitumen is more suited to larger vans All these options come at different price points from 10k to 300k so that is usually the main driver I tow a boat to remote places for extended periods so these options don’t apply It’s a tent or swag for me and I’m fast approaching 70 Still very comfortable
It's a cooking show mate its his job but the camping side off things is changing for him as his family grows he's just looking for the right home on wheels when their out and about so he can make more cooking shows comfortably 😊
Another great video! Interesting to see your views on the different types of towable homes. We just went nuts and brought a 23.6 Royal Flair Aussiemate and wouldn’t look back. Truly a joke away from home anywhere! That said, really needs a heavy duty American truck to tow it lol!
Personally I thin a small old style Rear Fold would do me very well. Something very light to tow with basic sleeping and 12v to charge phones, watch TV if the weather is bad, listen to music etc. The wife when we take a tent likes to sit inside and read but she will do the same outside so a small rear fold would give her room to do that and I would be outside unless the weather is bad. As much as a Hybrid of full caravan would be nice I don't thin we would need it. It would just be the 2 of us or maybe me alone lol.
Plenty of great info/perspective in this one .. getting to the time for us to consider stepping up from the camper .. might be time for the ‘VAN’ life 😊
We're got a few different tents and swags. We also have 2 kids (one the same age as Hugo, met him todays 4wd show. Enjoying these reviews as just when you think something would suit you bring up some practical points on what's good. Van 😅
A great review of the Hybrid “VAN” Harry, well done again. Although only briefly, it was a pleasure meeting you at the show last Friday (we asked you about the Minlaton thermal blanket). Love your work Mate, Mark and Cathy
Sorry, Harry mentioned another channel. Have a look at going overland, ev overland video. 1 year ago. Future of camping. I have the same camper, storage for batteries to extend the range of your camping. By plugging in and running the car.
What's it like with an indoor kitchen in the van versus the slide out in the hybrid. Did you still cook outside when staying in the van? Did you miss an outdoor kitchen?
I really need a VAN or something more comfortable than a tent at least. The missus would enjoy it more than camping. Something I could pretty much pull up to anywhere and it'd be set up in under 15 minutes instead of trying to put up a rubbish tent.
Currently tossing up between a camper trailer, a hybrid "van" or a caravan and many good points here, cost, comfort, storage and not modifying my car...not sure I am any closer to a decision 😆
We love our drifter & would love to upgrade to a h16 if it was a triple bunk option just lose the bottom storage under the double bunk put another window & you have a triple bunk 😉 code work Van
Ahhhh....bring back the cooking bra!! On the sponsor slippery slide? Stop showing all the goodies I can't afford...lol...keen to see what you got up your sleeve next.
Avan started making a new range of vans, starting with the Bvan, Cvan, Dvan, but they stopped at I. It got awful reviews for being "Ivan the Terrible".
How’s the doability of the frontier for a family unit similar to yours ? Baby and toddler, mumzy and dad? Do you guys setup the second bed with the baby in a portacot and the older lad on the mattress ?
Cool Ep Guys, But it all comes down to money for us, We have a 1983 Jayco Lark Windup van we rebuilt we love it owes us 5g we tow it everywhere our 4wd can tow it,

I'm not really a "van" fan, but watched it to the end to support a wonderful and loved UA-camr. Thanks mate for all your episodes

I’m stoked to hear that Andrew! You will absolutely love it mate. So much more living space and convenience and still unreal offroad.
We love our VAN, wouldn't be without it just gives you the home away from home

Longer trips where you can’t plan the weather a van is a better alternative and if you prefer remote camping away from parks a for extended periods a hybrid would suit provided you don’t have a big family
Long trips on the bitumen is more suited to larger vans
All these options come at different price points from 10k to 300k so that is usually the main driver
I tow a boat to remote places for extended periods so these options don’t apply
It’s a tent or swag for me and I’m fast approaching 70
Still very comfortable
Awesome outlook on the options. Don't worry about the level of cooking vids, We will love all of it so just keep doing what's relevant to your journey
It's a cooking show mate its his job but the camping side off things is changing for him as his family grows he's just looking for the right home on wheels when their out and about so he can make more cooking shows comfortably 😊
For us 'oldies', van is the way to go.
They're impossible to reverse when encountering an adult bull elephant in musth. Dome ground tent is best
As an oldie still in swags and tents, I must admit I’m intrigued by the hybrid.
Another great video! Interesting to see your views on the different types of towable homes.
We just went nuts and brought a 23.6 Royal Flair Aussiemate and wouldn’t look back. Truly a joke away from home anywhere! That said, really needs a heavy duty American truck to tow it lol!
Yes I agree different horse's for course's.. Van vs camper depends on alot.
As always, informative and entertaining!!
Great reviews on the VANS, thanks guys
We took a toddler into the Central Kalahari game reserve in a tent, was interesting with lion’s roaring outside…
Personally I thin a small old style Rear Fold would do me very well. great to hear your views on van life
When you consider most of these options can be rented for around $100/day. 99% of people are better off hiring these for their 2 trips per year.
Love your review of all " Vans " , you made simple sense.
Good one, love the C16...
Sorry, Harry mentioned another channel. Have a look at going overland, ev overland video. 1 year ago. Future of camping. I have the same camper, storage for batteries to extend the range of your camping. By plugging in and running the car.
Awesome round up on cub set ups...Van
Great overview thank you! We’re not at Van stage yet, but looks like a camper would suit us perfect with the 2 young kids.
Good advice. Code word Van. Cheers C
About to tow the “van” across the Nullarbor and down through the south west. Cannot wait.
thanks found this very useful, great break down.
Like your thoughts, definitely depends on where and for how long you intend go for, Van for the long road trip but we have gone a hybrid for now.
Great breakdown! Van life one day, for now camper trailer is the upgrade we’re looking at.
Great breakdown of the Vans'
What's it like with an indoor kitchen in the van versus the slide out in the hybrid. Did you still cook outside when staying in the van? Did you miss an outdoor kitchen?
Was looking forward to this episode as I thinking of buying a hybrid camper
Code word Van
I really need a VAN or something more comfortable than a tent at least. The missus would enjoy it more than camping. Something I could pretty much pull up to anywhere and it'd be set up in under 15 minutes instead of trying to put up a rubbish tent.
Currently trying to figure out if we want a trailer, hybrid, pop-top (like the Jayco Swan) or a full-blown van. This was helpful. Thanks!
Van. Great video. Would agree with most of your thoughts to the different set ups & usage.
Currently tossing up between a camper trailer, a hybrid "van" or a caravan and many good points here, cost, comfort, storage and not modifying my car...not sure I am any closer to a decision 😆
That river campsite in the camper trailer looks mint! Open to share a location?
We love our drifter & would love to upgrade to a h16 if it was a triple bunk option just lose the bottom storage under the double bunk put another window & you have a triple bunk 😉 code work Van
Van! Great video good insights camper trailer for me!
Caravan is the answer , buy an old one little reinforsment plus solar plus good matress you are golden, then use the car for offroad.
What a great Van comparison 😅
Van comfort, hard to beat.
Great summary. What is that location at 4:10? Looks nice!
did australia with a 3t 22 foot van. Something around 19 foot and closer to 2t is ideal.
I’d love to know the campsites shown in the vid.. they look amazing!
If your caravan, camper is using gas and solar it can be called hybryd, combination of things
The more room you have the more tempting to carry more things.
Van life would be so much fun travelling the country. That would be my wish if i could afford it.
Ahhhh....bring back the cooking bra!! On the sponsor slippery slide? Stop showing all the goodies I can't afford...lol...keen to see what you got up your sleeve next.
1:16 yes don’t review your partner 😂. I’ve tried this with mine and it ends badly.
Avan started making a new range of vans, starting with the Bvan, Cvan, Dvan, but they stopped at I. It got awful reviews for being "Ivan the Terrible".
Curious to know how a hybrid compares to a full caravan re weight.
How’s the doability of the frontier for a family unit similar to yours ? Baby and toddler, mumzy and dad?
Do you guys setup the second bed with the baby in a portacot and the older lad on the mattress ?
Van’d be nice as woulda hybrid but no dice for the price packet for me.
The frontier works well. We set up the porta cot and bassinet on the 2nd bed
We have a van, but the hybrids do sound interesting.
VAN life compared to camper trailer life chalk and cheese but both are still awesome
Taking any of these to VAN diemen's land?
If im going cruising around Australia for hopefully many more years id want the same comforts i had in my house
Just back from travelling in a VAN to FNQ!!
Me and my wife and daughter need a decent van to make it comfortable for the girls
Cool Ep Guys, But it all comes down to money for us, We have a 1983 Jayco Lark Windup van we rebuilt we love it owes us 5g we tow it everywhere our 4wd can tow it,
VAN is nice but we’ll stick with the camper trailer for the moment
still sitting on the fence to van or not to van is the question
If you go van, will you go back from there?
Best kinda Van is the kind named Dennis
would love a new Van, just can't justify the coast of them.
Van. we have a hybrid van. it is great.
VAN Damme that was good
To be fair
