- usually 50% to 60% of the planted buds of sugarcane progress to germinate under our farming conditions. Sowing methods, nature of seed/variety, seed rate, soil health, soil texture, sowing time and weather forecast conditions determine the germination percentage of sugarcane. Sugarcane germinates better at warm conditions. In this video, we have suggested to plant sugarcane when upper levels of temperature reach from 28-33 degree centigrade. It may be during early February in south, end February in central and mid March in the rice zone.
In addition to proper sowing time, application of Porus FMC @ 400 liter per acre either at sowing especially in case of heavy, clayey, salt affected soils or within a month after sowing has also been suggested. Moreover, seed treatment with 3% solution of Topsin M-Arysta, use of additional seed rate according to the environmental conditions, delayed application of 2nd irrigation to the planted crop of sugarcane has also been suggested in this video. Instead of sowing at temperature higher than 37 centigrade, the September sown crop should also be delayed up to October for better germination. Bud method of sowing has been proposed for 90% and trench method for 70% germination.
