I'm in college, and while I do rather decently in regards to grammar, I want to make sure I get full marks on my papers. So, after many years of never looking into it, I've decided to go try and learn more about this sort of thing. Mostly, hyphenated words are something I want to understand better. I never know when to use them.
I'm really ahead in English, my vocabulary is already in a 11th grade level according to many of my teachers and peers, but I find myself forgetting the basics of my native language. So here I am
I wrote notes for anyone who needs them .Full stop / period : makes the end of a sentence FE: Chloe went to the shop. She bought some sweets. ,Comma : indicates a natural pause in a sentence or use the separate items and a list. FE: Stacy went to her friend Amy’s house. She loves to go there. FE: Adam bought apples, bananas, pears and grapes from the market. ?Question mark: indicates the end of a question. FE: “How are you?”. Or “How long is the bus journey to London from Cambridge?”. !Exclamation mark: marks the end of a dramatic statement or sentence. FE: stop! Or Don’t run into the road! “”Quotation marks: indicates direct speech. FE:”I love to read a book” said Stacey Or “What did you do yesterday?” Asked Lucy. () parentheses (round brackets): separates extra information from the rest of the sentence or add emphasis. commas can replace them without changing the sentence. FE: On the weekends I visit James (my best friend). Or Yesterday (Friday) was the last day of school. [] square brackets: Used by the editor to indicate extra information. FE: The books states that “when climbing it[moutain], it is important to be very safe”. / Slash:forward slash is used to indicate the word ‘OR’ and can be used to separate the day, month and year. FE: please explain to the lawyer when he/she arrives. “In this case it’s use to replace the word ‘or’”. Or The date today is 01/02/2017. - hyphen : Used to join words or separate syllables in a word. - FE: She is very self-confident. Or FE: Her son is going to be four-years-old. -En dash: indicates a period, range of numbers or a distance. FE: She lived in London from 1999-2005 Or FE: The numbers range from 1-20 Or FE: the flight from Dubai-UK is very long. - Em dash: Long dash that can be used instead of a comma, colon or any bracket. This adds emphasis or enhances readability. FE: I can’t wait to see Amy - my best friend - on Sunday. Or FE: My parents are visiting tomorrow - I have missed them so much. … Ellipsis points : indicate omitted words or to add a fact to a sentence. FE: She walked into the shop… then walked straight back out. -> omitted words. (This is an example of where words have been admitted, admitted means where words have been taken out of the sentence). Or FE: “Sorry… I forgot my homework” said Adam. -> pause effect. (this sentence shows us where ellipsis points have been used to create pause for effect). Also FE:”I’m never going to be able to do this… “ said Stacey.

INCORRECT use of a comma at time stamp 1:28. If separating 2 groups of words which could be each a correct sentence on their own, use a semicolon, OR a comma with a conjunction, OR a semicolon with an adverb conjunction with a comma. OR Stacey went to her friend Amy's house, and she loves to go there. OR Stacey went to her friend Amy's house; furthermore, she loves to go there.
