The scene with Pancho and Numa crying together, to me, is one of the most beautiful and intimate scenes in a movie that had nothing to do with sex or romance.

Please don't say it's a remake because it's not, it's a version much closer to the real events. As a Latin American, I grew up listening to this story, reading about it, and I find this version beautiful, realistic and respectful. Several of the survivors make small appearances in the film.
Es cierto, hay tres pelícuas y ninguna es una remake, son recreaciones mas o menos fieles del caso real, yo nací en el 77 y cuando era niño en los 80s todavía se hablaba del caso (realidad mezclada con mito, como todo relato de boca en boca). Vi la versión del 93 cuando se estrenó y me encantó, tiene sus errores y omisiones, pero no deja de ser una versión respetuosa que contó con el asesoramiento de los sobrevivientes durante el rodaje, salí del cine muy emocionado y leí los libros y vi muchas entrevistas y documentales y aprendí mas detalles, como la segunda avalancha que no se mostraba en la película y otras tantas cosas que quedaron fuera o se cambiaron. La película mexicana es la mas floja, pero no estuvo del todo mal, aunque su presupuesto era muy bajo y no pidieron permiso, cambiaron los nombres para evitar problemas legales, aunque también gracias al bajo presupuesto se siente cruda y realista y sin tanto adorno como las versiones mas caras. Y esta última, que es la mas fiel, está bien documentada, cuenta con tecnología y presupuesto, y al tener actores uruguayos y argentinos se siente genuina, además tiene un tono entre documental y ficción, es la mas lograda, aunque también tiene sus detalles. Todas aportan un punto de vista, pero inevitablemente dejan mucho fuera y hay cosas que no pueden mostrar y todas están un poco idealizadas o romantizadas (lo que no está mal, al fin y al cabo son películas para entretener y no ara traumatizar o incomodar al espectador, a pesar de la tragedia real que narran), la historia real no entra en una peli, ni siquiera en una serie o documental, para quien quiera profundizar lo mejor es leer los relatos y las múltiples entrevistas para enterarse por propia boca de los supervivientes, hay muchísimo material y gracias a internet está disponible, solo hay que dedicarle tiempo y estudio. Es un caso fascinante y vale la pena.

And because it doesn't make sense talking about remakes about a true story. Every movie about WWII would be a remake.
The film is a cinematic masterpiece, not only because of the aesthetics, art, photography, make-up or script, but because they managed to tell the story as real and truthful as possible, to the point that the survivors actively participated in it and say that when they see it they relive in their minds everything that happened. It is wonderful the way in which Bayona manages to show the harshness of what happened with an artistic touch and a strong emotional charge and for the first time not only highlighting the figure of the survivors as heroes but also those who died and did not make it out of the mountain, which is why Numa's voice as narrator is so important. Each of the actors met the real person they were playing and most of them managed to create a bond with them, moving from interpretation to reality and giving the importance it deserves to what each survivor felt, because as they have already said, each one remembers the mountain in a unique way.
Anyone that has gone hiking in the mountains, mountain climbing or snowshoeing know that it is really hard on the body and you can get tired fast. The fact they did it in the middle of the Andes after more than 2 months of starving is what always surprises me. The amount of courage those 2 had to go into an unknown path into the mountain versus staying at the crash site for a sense of safety just shows how much determination they had to survive.
And that's why it's the greatest survival story!

To add some context the pilots thought that they had already crossed the andes (by passing Curico) so they head towards north to go to Santiago.
But they were wrong and crashed as they were still in the middle of the mountains.
Even after the crash the pilot thought that they passed Curico (hence the scene with the pilot) leading for passager to think that they crashed really close to the edge of the Andes
When the 3 guys reached the top of the first mountain they were convinced that there would only few days would be needed to reach the plain.
You can imagine their surprise when they discovered that there were still in the middle of the Andes with at least a week of hiking to reach the civilization.
At the end during 10 days the traveled 53.9 Km, climbed 839m and descended 1425 meters, very impressive.
How could a pilot make that mistake?

@@user-wn6hh4dy8c Everyone do mistakes even pilots (hopefully they are trained so it is rare).
Most of the time pilots have no visual evidence and have to fly on instrument.
Here they underestimated the headwind leading to an overestimation of the distance travelled. It is a strong mistake that cost the life of many people.
I am genuinely mad that this movie couldn't compete as best movie for the Oscars that year and I am even more sad that it didn't won the best foreign movie Oscar.
It is an incredible movie, one of the best of for years.

It debuted at a very important film festival (Festival del Mar del Plata), got an standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and swept the Goya Awards away. The showings were always full, at least in Uruguay Spain. It is currently the #2 most watched non-English movie on Netflix, with 98,5 million views. I would not say that “nobody saw it”

But we all know that the jury isn't unbiased.
It literally costs millions of dollars to campaign your film in order to get nominated for the Oscars. It's not a free badge of honor that goes to the most worthy film, as many would like to believe.

14 out of 16 survivors are still alive and helped make this film. Mr. Methol died a while back from cancer and Coche Inciarte died last year. They managed to show him the film before he passed.

Ive been with this story since reading the book "Alive" back in 1976. Here is a comment I've posted elsewhere on updates on the survivors and some trivia from the film. Please forgive if it seems some information is weird in that you didn't ask that question.
The film was partially filmed up at the Valley of Tears where the fuselage actually came to rest. JA Bayona went up there and filmed things for the backdrop of Mt. Seler (named by Nando Parrado in honour of his father), plus the surround for the Andes. The sound mixer also recorded things like the wind and how the snow sounds up there to be used in this film. So it is by and large authentic to the experiences these boys went through.
As for Numa Turcatti. Numa was the one righteous man we see once in a lifetime. He was a law student who was about to take the bar to become a lawyer. His arguments against eating the dead was based on both his spiritual beliefs, and his studies in law.
The four days buried was because in tandem with the avalanche, they were also experiencing gale force winds and a four day storm. That was why the shelter of the fuselage was better until the storm was over.
Arturo died of pneumonia. His lungs were full of fluid. Usually antibiotics could help, but up there Roberto and Gustavo had nothing. As for them being clean shavn, not all men grow bushy beards. Some may have tons of head hair, but very little if no facial hair.
The actor playing Numa is Enzo Vogrinzic, actually lost about 50 pounds during the filming. He went from 150 to 103lbs. All the actors were on a closely monitored diet to fully depict the trials the actual men went through up there. As one's body begins to diminish, they become somewhat old as they no longer have the suppleness of the muscle they had. The protein in the bodies gave them nothing but lean energy, but not carbohydrates we all need to sustain us.
As for Numa dying. He was the voice of the dead, the ones who didn't return. The ones who survived are still close to this day. There are 14 left as Javier Methol (the man who lost his wife) died in 2014, and Jose Luis "Coche" Inciarte (the one who needed help walking) died in 2023. They still gather on rescue day, or as they call it "rebirth day." They have all gone back up to the crash site many times since 1972. One of them, Eduardo Strauch, is part of an adventure team that takes sivilians up to the crash site. All that remains up there is wreckage as the remander of the fuselage was burned and the bodies buried in a communal grave.
Roberto Canessa (med student) and Nando Parrado (man who lost his sister and mother) have been called exceptional in what they did. Mountaineers and alpinists from Ed Viesters (summited Everest five times) and others have called what they did as amazing considering they had no equipment and no training. Also not to forget their physical condition.
As for the long-term effects of what happened. Many of them do suffer from a form of PTSD, but with the other survivors they have help and support.
The one thing I have to say about these boys. If you remember from the beginning of the film, Numa's voice over stated many of these boys had known each other when they were young. Many of their fathers knew each other as many played rugby for Stella Maris College as teens/young men. These men formed lasting bonds that have survived to this day due in large part to their faith, and their love....always love for each other. And at the end of this story as it still is 52 years later, it is all about the love they had for each other and the love they had for the ones who didn't return. This story is about the power of love. Could we all wish to have the same spirit these men had and have today. I've been with this story since reading "Alive" back in 1976. I have followed these men since then. The one thing I have learned from them is not to squander away your life as you might not know what as Roberto Canessa has said, "When your plane will crash."
Some info about where they all are today. Roberto Canessa (med student and one of the ones who made the walk) is now a world reknown pediatric cardio thorasic surgeon. He operates on fetuses inside their mother's wombs in order for them to be born healthy and life their lives as they should. He has won many awards for it including many in the United States.
Nando Parrado (one who lost his sister and mother) is an vintner, and former race car drivier and who is now a motivational speaker.
Many of them indluding Gustavo Zerbino (other med student) and Adolfo "Fito" Strauch have become long term associates for Stella Maris College in the rugby program. The same one they came from. Javier Methol (man who lost his wife) was a tobacco grower and successful buisness man. Moncho Sabella lives in Argentina and is a successful agriculturalist. A lot of the others have gone into other things including public speaking as has Carlitos Paez (guy whose father was looking for him.)
Some trivia: Nando Parrado can be seen in the airport opening the door for his "family" and his portrayer, Agustin Pardella. Roberto Canessa can be seen aiding his film portrayer, Matias Recalt when they get to the hospital after the rescue. Coche Inciarte can be seen directly behind Numa Turcatti actor, Enzo Vogrinzic, in the pub scene with Gaston and Pancho. Ramon Sabella can be seen in the airport as an extra. Carlitos Paez (guy who made the sleeping bag) played his own father, Carlos Paez Vilaro who didn't rest until his son was back safe. Juaquin Turcatti (Numa's actual brother) is seen in the night outside the home Numa grew up in. Those were Numa's actual books he used to study from. Gustavo Zerbino is seen at the beginning as a rugby coach.
In summation, this film was made to remember those who died. This is the first time the names of the dead have been used as the relatives of the dead refused to allow their loved ones names to be used in other productions: "Survive" 1976, and "Alive" 1993. This film is a dedication from the living to the dead. It is their voice Numa speaks for.

It must have been unimaginable relief and joy they felt when the chopper landed on that grass. Hugging your loved ones and taking it all in, as if it was the last and first time they were ever gonna hold them. That's what made me cry.
Filmed above Granada spain just above and to the right of the top ski runs and the radio telescopic. Someone I know who is a guide worked on the set keeping the cast and film crew safe . When iwas up there climbing I watched the crew goto and from the fake crash site .
I would definetly give permission for people to share my peach to survive xD

You aren't wrong, it is possible to go 30 days without food, but I think most people could only do about 3 weeks, especially if there is any kind of physical activity. I think most of the people who have gone 30 days without food have usually largely still or meditating during that time.

Fun fact the pictures and footage that is shown is real footage and the man saying the names of the survivors on the radio is one of the real life survivors and one of the doctors you see in the scene where they are going into the hospital is also a real life survivor of that plane crash.

His are playing his father in the movie
The accident was basically human error... frist they flied even tho the climate was not good, second, remember that scene where they explain the rout in the piece of paper? well they were flying on instruments alone tru that mountain pass, they calculate their position based on the speed, time of flight and direction.. but, the copilot failed to account the speed of the wind against the plain, have he done so he would have know that they were still 6min of flight from reaching the end of the pass, so since he didnt do that calculation, he though the plain had cleared the pass and the pilot turned the plain north, thats why the pilot thinks they had passed the city of Curico.

I can't agree with the assertion that only the strongest survived. Some of those who died during the crash and in the avalanche were just as strong or more so as the 16 survivors. Call it luck, fate or divine providence. Strength was important, but there were other factors, like faith, determination, compassion, will to survive, resourcefulness, wit, courage, solidarity, team work.

The reason the urine was black was probably due to severe dehydratation compounded with malnutrition. At high altitude the body loses water faster than at sea level. They were always thirsty. Not to talk about the lack of oxygen, the constipation that they all suffered and became a serious problem. Only the survivors really know the full extent of all that they went through. Even a movie as accurate and beautiful as this one can`t fully capture the extent of their ordeal, although it comes close.
Hello, in this movie, several of the survivors made cameos. In the airport scene, the person who opens the door for Nando Parrado and his family is the real Nando, the person who reads the list of survivors is the real Carlitos Paez playing his father, the artist Carlos Paez Bilaró. In the hospital scene after the rescue, the doctor behind Roberto Canessa is the real Roberto, today a great pediatric cardiac surgeon. If you are interested, on UA-cam you can find some of the conferences given by both Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado or reports that were made to them in the house of the mule driver who found them and the press conference they gave when they returned to Uruguay. Chile is in the southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed.
So 30th October i s the middle of Spring, whih was good for them I guess as it was warm enough during the day but it leads to avalanche as the snow above them was melting.

As to your question...honestly it's a survival situation, you eat what is available, I would, and if I died I would expect them to use my body. No judgement, its not ideal but you do what you must.

Es que en los 70' las personas leian y no solo veian tiktoks y youtube, por eso es que sabian de todo un poco.
También eran jovenes educados, universitarios, que además trabajaban en los campos de sus familias en verano (por eso, por ejemplo, sabían faenar).

A few facts:
Nando made quite a recovery because even when his head swelled with the impact, it was facing the cold metal of the plane when he was left outside because everybody was thinking he was dead or about to die. The cold served as a very cold ice pack to heal the swelling in his head and make him better. Diego Storm (who died during the avalanche) was another medicine student thought after the first night it was a good idea to bring Nando to a warmer area inside the plane.
They really tried to make a fire but the winds were very strong and keep putting it down. Also, they didn't have much to burn and it would burn instantly, so instead they gave up the idea to make a fire and instead putting as many layers of clothing as possible.
The idea Nando had to want to eat the bodies came out of anger that the pilots' negligence got them to be stuck in the mountain helpless. Let's not forget he lost his mum, sister and 2 best friends. Nando's anger it's what pushed him to want to get out of there no matter what.
They were peeing black because of severe dehydration, the snow took ages to melt and the ice was burning their mouths and gums.
Numa, when Marcelo died said: they have been waiting for a moment like that, a moment of peace. Marcelo after finding out the government stopped looking for them got very depressed and kind of lost hope. Some of the survivors say that they think when Marcelo was trapped in the snow during the avalanche he let himself die because he could not fulfill his promise that rescue was coming and all of those people were in that plane because he planned the trip. The guilt and despair kill him, the avalanche was just his way to let go of that burden.
Fito was the one who thought of making water, glasses to protect their eyes from the reflexion of the sun in the snow and also chose the bodies that would be eaten along with his cousins Daniel and Eduardo. Fito was called the inventor. The cousins how the call themselves were those who carried the biggest burden of all, to know which friend they were eaten and cut that friend to be eaten.
Carlitos, the young person who crashed into the suitcases with his car at the airport, was a spoiled child who came from a wealthy family. He was very spoiled, he even had a nanny, after this trip his perspective of life absolutely changed. In the plane, he was in charge of making sure there were not drafts in the plane or reduce the possibility of drafts using the suitcases and plane seats, he was very good at it. He also was the one who made the sleeping bag that Nando and Roberto used to protect them and sleep during their walk to Chile.
They had so so so so many cigarettes because in Chile cigarettes were scarce and Javier Methol, the man who lost his wife in the avalanche, worked in a Tabaco company so thought it was a good business to take a lot of cigarettes and sell them in Chile. In those years if you went to Chile with a few dollars or had some out of the market products you were a millionaire. Chile was going through a horrible economical crisis.
Numa did not get injured like that in the real events, someone walked on his leg by accident because of the lack of space in the plane and because he was not eating his body did not have much strength to recover from the bruise. He was the last one who died and his death pushed Nando and Roberto to say fuck it lets do this, let's save ourselves because no one else is going to. The others 14 left in the plane also had a plan b in case Nando and Canessa did not make it which was putting together another team to hike the mountains.
The actual survivors loved this version more than the 1993 version, because it doesn't idolise the survivors as the heroes, instead recognises and considers those who died and their memory. In the alive version some families did not give permission to use the real rugby player's names. In this versions all the families were happy and satisfied with the way the story was told and gave permission.
Reporters kept digging in a very nasty way how they survived, what did they eat, etc. The survivors were very secretive for respect to their death friends families, also ashamed and worry their families friends and the country would judge them. They had a press conference were they answered to reporters questions ONCE instead that addressing the situation 100000 times to every reporter who asked. They asked the reporters and people for respect of their choices considering the very harsh circumstances they had to face. Pancho Delgado (Numa's best friend in the movie was they one who spoke in this conference) He said that Jesus gave his blood and body to save the world so the survivors took their friends bodies and blood for them to be save. Pancho also asked the reporters to please not spoiled with yellow press and judgement an act that was sacred to them and something that was done for pure survival instinct.
The actual survivors made a Kameo in the movie Nando, opened the door to the actor who played him at the airport, Roberto Canessa was one of the Drs in the Hospital when they got rescued, Coche Inciarte reading a newspaper in the bar Numa and his friends were, Daniel Fernandez in the church, Numa's real life nephew passing by Numa's house when he was entering and Carlitos, who read all the survivors names, were is different scenes. The house shown as Numa's house in the movie was actually his real house back in 1972.
The reason why Zerbino would not leave without the suitcase it's because he hoped that tokens from the death people, like personal belongings such as jewelry, rosaries, ID's, letters written before dying were taking back to give to their families. That actually happened the real survivor refused to leave without the suitcase and when back home he personally went to each of the families homes of the passengers that did not survive to give them something that belonged to them, so the families even when not having their bodies back they could have something to remember them by.
In the movie isn't shown but the rescue was in 2 stages. They had to rescue one lot of people that day and the next lot the day after. Some survivors had to stay another night waiting for the other helicopters to arrive. Those left behind the first day were left with food and a team of rescuers. A survivor said most of the rescuers were scared of them after seeing all the human remaining all over the place and made sure the survivors knew they had a gun. Also the smell and dirt was unbearable. Only one rescuer Sergio Diaz, I believe he is called, stayed in the plane with them that night, ate with them and advised them about what they were going to face after everybody knew they have eaten human beings.
There is a man who was part of the search team that were looking for the plane during the rescue missions. His name is Claudio Lucero and he had made quite strong arguments in the media about how he believes the 27 people left alive in the plane after the crash planned and plotted maliciously all the events that happened to them to gain fame. He states they could have left the mountain days before the day they got rescued, but chose to stay longer and go through hunger and lost to become famous and earn money.
The 70s were definitely a great time for cultural zeitgeist. Well, it was definitely interesting and charming. It had its bad things (and NO, I do NOT mean disco! Disco music does NOT suck), but it was a very interesting and eventual decade.

Esta es la tercera película que se hace sobre el hecho. La primera fue mexicana, la segunda estadounidense y ésta última, que es una coproducción entre España, Uruguay y chile, con actores uruguayos y argentinos. Todas están bastante bien dentro de sus posibilidades y respetan la historia dentro de lo que una versión cinematográfica puede hacerlo en cada época, pero lo mejor es leer "Viven" y "La sociedad de la nieve", si quieres la historia mas completa y con detalles que el cine prefiere o necesita omitir. Por ejemplo todo lo que pasa fuera de la montaña, las historias de los familiares durante la bùsqueda, el trabajo de los rescatistas, la prensa, etc. También los momentos tensos, los enfrentamientos, las tares desagradables y la marginación, los momentos alegres, etc. el juicio moral de la sociedad, las preguntas de la prensa, todo lo posterior al rescate, etc. es una historia que no entra en una película, ni siquiera en una serie. Hay material fílmico original, filmaciones del rescate, los rescatistas que se tuvieron que quedar a dormir el primer día del rescate (no fue inmediato) y les daba miedo dormir con los sobrevivientes, debido al escenario que te puedes imaginar y que no se muestra. En las entrevistas de los sobrevivientes cuentan que la película es una versión realista pero "endulzada" de los hechos, la realidad fue un verdadero infierno.

They peed black because once the body has no more fat to consume, it starts consuming proteins and when the kidneys filter those proteins they make the urine come out black. Nowadays here in Argentina, from Mendoza, trekkings are organized to reach the place where the remains of the plane are... the place is called the valley of tears.
Although most commented that urine being black is dehydration, it was more likely a combination of dehydration and rhabdomyolysis.
Due to starvation and the extreme cold plus the crash injuries muscles cannot heal and the body starts to "consume" the muscles, potentially damaging the kidney.
They needed food to get rid of the black pee, they were already melting water. So it's probably rhabdo, although one of the ways to treat symptoms is fluid intake fto flush the kidneys.
Want to visit the Southern Mts of Chile/Argentina. Places that are very similar to Austria but still more wild. I've hiked in heights like where they were, only in Canada in the Columbia Icefields. Hike up Athabasca into them and then across.

I watched the 1993 movie "Alive" about this tragedy. It was a really good movie. I'm sorry, I just didn't have it in me to watch this, considering how intense the subject matter is and I've been through it before. No. Alive was written in 1974 as a rushed effort from the survivors to have an official version of the story (the yellow press were inventing whatever to sell). Although it is a good chronological telling of the story, the portrayal of personalities and inner thoughts of the survivors left a lot to be desired. Piers Paul Read even apologized to them later because he felt he misinterpreted them. The 1995 movie, Alive, was authorized by the survivors, but not by the families of the victims, and neither of them like it very much.
The book this movie is based on is Society of the Snow (2008), by Pablo Vierci, who is Uruguayan, and it includes how all 16 survivors felt about what happened after 35 years. The story is a lot more difficult to follow, but you can get to understand the thoughts and feelings of all of them, plus you get to know how the accident affected their later lives

Haven't seen this version, but saw _Alive_ (1993) [Ethan Hawke] at the theater. It was really good. But I know this new version was filmed at the actual crash site so it may be even more authentic.
I also remember as a child in the early 1980s when I first heard about this. My dad made some offhand comment about having to eat people like the soccer team in the Andes. I asked if that was really true, and he said it was. I still didn't believe him and brushed it off. I figured he made it up just to mess with me. Boy was I wrong.
No scenes were filmed at the actual location, they took footage of the scenery to build a realistic set and Background in a hanger.

This has echoes of "Alive" from the 90s. I'd recommend that film, but it may just be an "Americanized predecessor" to this film.
"Alive" put me off from ever flying again. I won't do it. And then that 9/11 stuff just cemented my aversion to flying.
I might do a small private plane or jet, but no more big commercial airliners.

There se many causes for dark urine, but, in this case, it’s likely because of dehydration, since snow on its own does not really have enough salts in it to be properly absorbed by the body to be used as water.
Other causes of dark urine are kidney failure of any kind, cholestasis, blood in urine and traumatic and inflammatory muscle breakdown.
