  • In today's video I am discussing the Celine Fall Winter /Autumn Winter 2019 collection. Hedi Slimane is the creative director of Celine having worked at Dior Homme & Saint Laurent Paris previously. Hedi Slimane is criticised for turning Celine into Saint Laurent Paris 2.0, but is he changing?
Do you still want Pheobe Philo back at Celine or are you enjoying this sudden progression from Hedi Slimane?

Hedi should just create his own label, but I do like the AW19 collection.

I don't think Old Celine and 1970s Celine is the right comparison. It's great he's going back to the archives but that is not related to Philo's work. That's not what people mean by 'old Celine'.

i feel like the 2019 fw line should have been the first line he made when he joined celine in my opinion. to be honest i really like the line.

Hedi actually did the same with Saint Laurent by going into the archives in the fall 2014/2015

Jireh X Philo stepped down. Hedi was appointed. Phoebe Philo is not Celine. Celine has had designers before and will continue to do so after. Celine does not have concrete codes and heritage like many others so each designer who has taken over the house has made their own individual stamp. It is not a designer’s job to continue on from their predecessor. Phoebe Philo and Hedi Slimane are entirely different designers with different styles and references, so you can’t expect Hedi to seriously change his vision to fit anothers (which is the polar opposite) at a house with little to no heritage. I think people should be more optimistic for Hedi at Celine and if not search for a Philo alternative such at Bottega Venneta.

    It's interesting...
While Celine has always had an identity which was Bourgeois, Parisian and slightly conservative...It has never had a clear aesthetic.
When we look at Celine before Kors, during Kors and even after Kors, it has always had a very bourgeois, comfortable parisian aesthetic. The thing is that every designer had their own version of that aesthetic. Unfortunately, nobody really made it successful because i think, timing is key in fashion.
    Phoebe changed everything!
It's like Gucci by Tom Ford. Gucci was really different before him but he defined it in a such way that is still modern today that it will forever be Gucci. Alessandro Michele is doing wonderful things but if you ask someone when were the best years of Gucci, he will tell you: The Tom Ford years...
And it's the same for a lot of brands. I was thinking about Lanvin...The Alber Elbaz years were the best ever for the brand, no matter how successful the new designer will be.
    About Hedi.
This is just one collection. At the end of the day, you look at the website, the stores and all...It's still very Hedi and so, in a way, very Saint Laurent.
I don't think Hedi is changing because i believe that he is the type of designer who is going back to what he loves. He is not a Karl Lagerfeld or a John Galliano who was/is looking forward.
I loved the modernity of Hedi's work at Yves Saint Laurent (in the beginning of his career) and the evolution of his aesthetic at Dior Homme. Dior Homme started really modern, inspired by the french electro music scene and slightly evolved into Rock. His obsession went from Berlin to London/LA.
Is this collection really different? No, it's just a cleaner, simpler version of his Prefall 2016 collection presented in L.A.
But this collection shows that, at least for one season, Hedi can adapt his limited vocabulary to the identity of the house. This is his version of bourgeois parisian dressing.

Just wanted to say before I leave my response that I’ve seen you have left a few well thought out comments on various videos and as someone that likes engaging in serious fashion discussion I appreciate you taking out the time to leave such responses.
      Anyway, in response:
1.) You are very right, though Hedi Slimane has shown in this collection that he can translate his aesthetic into the archives of Celine, everything else about the brand does scream SLP. From the campaign photography style to the Instagram curation it’s all a rehash of his time at SLP.
2.) Phoebe Philo’s time at Celine was certainly my favourite Celine moment but then that’s the only Celine era time I’ve really grown up on. When I got into fashion it was also about Phoebe Philo whether it was about her bringing the Stan smiths back or just making amazing collections. I’m just not a fan of this narrative where people say garments that don’t look like hers “aren’t” Celine because like I said in the video there have been designers that came before her and I have taken time out in the past to go through Celine archives and understand their collections.
3.) I do agree with you saying that with certain brands there’s always that designer we remember. Like you said, Tom Ford at Gucci, Phoebe Philo at Celine but one I also think of is Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga. I think when Demna leaves there will definitely be this thing of the person coming after him not being good enough. Especially after the terrible Alexander Wang Balenciaga tenure.

@@FashionRoadman What is interesting about Hedi is how he has changed what was required for a designer and also how the love of his younger fans has shifted the whole thing.
In general, in fashion, it's expected for a "truly talented designer" to be versatile. That's why having a "style" was so important. Phoebe's work for Chloé was different from her work for Celine. Karl's work for Chanel was different from Fendi. Galliano's work for Margiela is different from he used to do at his own line or Dior....And the list goes on.
Hedi is obviously not a versatile designer and tbh, it's on him but i think he has that arrogance that people just don't like.
About the designers we remember, i'm glad you mentionned Demna.
When Nicolas Ghesquiere left Balenciaga, it was a huge thing. Maybe people don't really realize it today but Nicolas and Riccardo really changed the way people dressed from the mid to late 00's. Like with Philo, it was impossible to imagine Balenciaga without Nicolas because he was pushing fashion forward each season.
Wang was just bad! How someone who has copied Nicolas since the beginning of his career could have been great for the job?
Demna changed the dynamic because he had a clear aesthetic. He mixed that with classic Balenciaga and his own interpretations of Nicolas's work. He is doing good.
For me, a designer is at his best when he can let his ego go away. When you aren't able to do it, it's better to have your own brand. Look at McQueen...His Givenchy was too much about him. He failed but he learned a lot and it made him better...
Look at Raf at JS. He totally understood the spirit of the brand and the collections were great...Unfortunately, once his ego got big, he failed like at Dior and of course CK.
And thank you! My responses are just the result of your in depth topics. Your passion is admirable.
People usually like fashion or say they loves fashion but it's generally superficial. You really loves fashion and it shows.

To your point about "Old Celine" I feel like they really just mean Phoebe Philo's Celine. I don't know why, but for some reason it's almost as if Philo era Celine has become a litmus test for "in the know" fashion people, and although she's really talented I think it's just become excessive.

Love your channel, always a good discussion. Hedi is great at appropriating and then creating archetypes. I think you are spot on about him courting publicity with the stunt in his first show, the fw19 collections (both men's and women's) seem to be a clearer vision for Celine. We shall see if it holds 😅
