I dig your channel, so I want to know. I would have expected a different response to this track, but I appreciate that thus isn't attractive to you. What moved you back then?
If you want more aggressive "jazz-rap," then check out The Roots' first two albums, "Organix" and "Do You Want More??!!?" The rapper in that group actually scats on some of the songs and the music is mostly live instrumentalists playing and harmonizing... Also, you should check out Freestyle Fellowship... they literally freestyle with a jazz cadence on much of their songs and they play live instruments, too. Digable Planets mainly used jazz funk samples. The predominant sample in "Rebirth of Slick" is Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' "Stretchin'" The bass line part is slowed down a lot.
I always thought they were more lo-fi hip-hop than anything else. But,if you want a little more traditional funk, check out Digital Underground, they said rapping over Parliament Funkadelic was impossible, they did it though.💖💖💖💖
This group hit hip hop and did well because of their originality. Us 90s fans loved original authentic music. That’s why our era (the 90s) is still so prominent today.
Your reaction to this has solved a 30+ year curiosity that I had. I needed a jazz musician to critique this and you delivered. Thank you. Sidebar: I found your channel today and have binge-watched like 20 of your vids…and subscribed. Keep up the great work!
Well, I think Ima have to disagree here. I love this song and it is very jazzy! But that is the beauty of music, everyone gets to enjoy it how they want.

Binged a good amount of your videos. Love the piano and the mix of passion with the theory stuff. Anyway i wanted to make a suggestion that could be rather interesting. Chino of Deftones side project Crosses. Specifically Bitches Brew or The Epilogue. Those 2 really put me in a weird trance. Some sort of feeling im very unsure of. Anyway yes those are my recomendations.
YES! Soooo glad you’re doing this within hours of my mentioning it!!!! Too bad you didn’t like it-I think you’re the only person I’ve ever heard that doesn’t love it, and it def won a Grammy, etc. And no, they’ve got other good songs (“Nickle Bag of Funk,” for one.)
Wu tang clan - gravel pit And we need more dance gavin dance! They're so technical and I like hearing your breakdowns of their music in depth. I understand the controversy though.
They sampled an actual Jazz song. How is it not Jazzy enough. Hilarious.

Their sophomore album Blowout Comb is pretty good. Much better than the album this song is on. It's more freeform and flowy
Agreed. Blowout Comb is their best album- hard pressed to remember a song on that album I didn’t love!
I totally disagree. Their first with Rebirth of Slick is amazing! Saw this trio in 1993 Lawrence KS and it was amazing!

It's a great song, but it's still not jazz. It's jazz-inspired hip hop. They looped a break beat and samples.
