This woman's voice and expression can move me to tears. I've been an involuntary opera singer all my life, though I certainly never had her kind of success. Part of the reason I probably didn't go further was a certain distain for over the top emotions, particularly in verismo operas. I also started late and didn't get early training so opera caused much bitter pursuit, but when I hear this kind of talent and singing, I wish I'd had people that trained me to appreciate such elevated wonder. The great and prolific opera composer Puccini may have written this note but Angela in this pre-eminent delivery gave it a verve, a life and a quintessential performance that the iconic composer may not have imagined possible. Kudos Angela, you are loved beyond measure.
Deserts? In New Orleans? This opera has perhaps the sappiest finish to any of Puccini’s operas, but with the usual gorgeous music, who cares. I’m pushing 86 years and have never in all of those years heard a performance of a single aria that knocked me over like this one, and not even heard by the public. There are several sopranos, (and mezzos,) that have a hard-to-describe touch of velvet, or pathos in their voices, that tear me up every time I hear them. Gheorghiu is at the top of that list. Others that affect me the same way are, Frederica Von Stade, Janet Baker, and Licia Albanese. I don’t remember ever hearing a recording of a Puccini soprano aria that I would consider equal to this one. (I’m not including the extreme power hitters required for Turandot, which doesn’t fit the typical Puccini lyric role.) (I got started on this trek when I was 19 and an usher at the SF Opera Co. for two seasons. It happened on a late season Sunday matinee and the house was half empty. The opera was Manon Lescaut and the principles were Albanese and Bjoerling. I bawled like an idiot through the last 15 minutes
Roy Thomas Always good to hear Björling mentioned in discussions about opera. A very happy sight for a Swede like me! I'm just in my 20s, but i too appreciate the richness of engaging with music and artists like these absolute peak performers. It just doesn't get better than this.
Right, Taurine. Scandanavian singers have made some huge bright spots over the years. I was very privileged as a youngster to see the incredible Kirsten Flagstad perform several times and can still hear her in my mind after 70 years....
Roy Thomas dear Mr. Thomas, Manon Lescaut was my second Opera in 1970, I believe , and it remains to this day as my favorite experience of an opera .Richard Tucker and Teresa Kubiak where the stars and though I knew some of the music beforehand, I was blown away that night and it always does. I've seen many operas since then including San Francisco where I live but that night was pure Magic for me and will remain in my memory as the best night I had at the Opera. I appreciate your comments very much and yes this is number one soprano Aria in regards to dying by Puccini

And fairly cheap tickets aren't impossible to come by either. :) Although I think their recent edition of La Boheme was superior over all, this aria had me swooning out of pure emotionin my seat.
Angela Gheorghiu is the best. Such a powerful and dark voice. Haven't heard a better performance of this anywhere (it's safer commenting that here than on a Maria Callas video!).
