The Homeless Firefighter Hey bud, good on you finding early on what really matters in life. 30 yrs EMS/Fire Svc and 35 yrs Military Svc as well. I work the same fire shift you do, so I totally relate to the Sub/Swap concept. I once sub/swapped almost two whole months to $$$ double dip for military leave. As far as the nice nest egg that you have accumulated, please find, watch, like and subscribe to The Crazy Framer. He literally frames up an entire multilevel home by himself. The money you have saved will easily pay in full for a plot of land as well as the material to build a small modest comfortable dwelling. Learn to frame a structure and go from there. You will not have to give up your freedom to roam!!! The thing I learned from our line of work: 911 has enabled us US Americans to be fat sloppy lazy and self absorbed!! (not all of us) But you def know what I'm talking about. I noticed that despite all of the traffic chaos in WW Nam, nobody seemed to be road raging over the road!! I wish you well friend!!!!

That's a GREAT idea! You will never regret it. I'm retired Army and got rid of a house and all the crap that went with it. Now I live in a 30ft travel trailer in Ft Myers Florida. Close to the beach and fishing. Just me and my dog. Enjoy life and screw the hassle of regular life. Only two things I won't get rid of. My church and dog.

God I wish I had a job that provided showers at work.I'd NEVER EVER pay rent or mortgage again.
If anyone knows of a relatively inexpensive gym with showers that have warm water, I might consider it still. hahaha I own basically nothing and wouldn't have it any other way.
funny, how the US became the US because Europeans killed off the primitive natives, and so many are ditching materialistic bs for what really matters.

I’m from Walnut Creek and Modesto CA, but lived in Sacramento for two years before I moved to Saint George, UT. Miss California but don’t miss the rent prices. I had a 650 sq foot apartment that was pretty much 1000 bucks a month as well. Anyways, I’ve been thinking of moving out and travel more myself. Friends and family think it’s weird and they class me as “homeless” but I see a lot of benefits out of it. Especially when I work 3 12s at the hospital.

I will be remodeling right now I’m no longer home free, mainly due to the weather, as it is in the 25-40 degree ranger. I plan on taking the knowledge that I’ve gained to remodel and go back at it. Hey Sam, I randomly stumbled upon this video and am indeed glad I did.
I’m currently a senior in high school as well as an explorer/cadet of almost 4 years for a combined Fire/ALS department outside of Tampa. Last summer, I took a trip to Colorado and Utah and fell in love with the area. In addition to being an explorer, I’ve found a great hobby of doing professional photo work for departments around the country of their apparatus for their websites, annual reports, etc. While in Colorado, I met many members of different departments specifically in the Denver metro and almost immediately got the thought “Man, I wonder if I could ever get on with a department out here, this place is gorgeous!” Fast forward almost three months from being there and I’m still dead set on doing everything I can to get hired out there at a good department.
Moving to Colorado from Florida at a young age with career in mind would be a daunting task, especially with most departments out there requiring you to go to Medic school before hire/finish before end of probation. I suppose I could get my Certs in Florida and test for Colorado before moving there, however I have to research what carries over a bit more and make sure that would go smoothly.
I know the cost of living out there is sky high (average rent close to/above 1k, lowest average around $800 from what I saw) so, I’ve considered taking my Ford Ranger out there with me and living out of it until I get stable enough to either pay rent comfortably or, as you stated, save up enough to put a down payment on a house.
It is relieving to see that someone in the fire service with the unique shift schedule can live comfortably out of their truck, I’d never heard of anyone here in Florida doing this.
This type of lifestyle and the changes that come with it would be hard for me to get used to but is something I’ve always wanted to do, whether that be for overland trips or just day to day living in general.
Thanks for making this video! Hopefully somebody else in my position will stumble upon it too and find it helpful.
Stay safe and keep the faith!

    • @TheHomelessFirefighter
      @TheHomelessFirefighter  6 років тому +1

Chris thats awesome you're pursuing fire, its a great and rewarding career. Colorado is a beautiful place, I played rugby there a couple of times in college.
The shift schedule definetely allows for this type of lifestyle and im enjoying it so far. Keep me up to date with how the interviews and the whole process im general goes.

Simple, frugal and admirable way of living. Props to you for making your own way and choosing what looks/sounds to be a fulfilling lifestyle.
A few months ago I purchased a Tacoma that came with a Flippac camper shell. It’s been stirring in my mind to finally take the leap and live in it, and like you choose to not throw thousands into insane rental prices.
Most of all, there is just a simple blockade of fear to plunge through. Life is full of unknowns, there is no such thing as absolute security, gotta just do it!
    Keep on keeping on man!

Looks great. I am doing a similar set up in my pickup. I am retired and just want to be able to get out and travel occasionally without the hassles of of pulling a camper and trying to find places to park it. The truck will be perfect. I plan to do some camping and a little hiking in my favorite mountains this summer and if you go to Yellowstone you will be close by and should check out the Wind River Mountains. I normally go in at the Upper Green River Lakes Campground/Trailhead just North of Pinedale. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world and is extremely peaceful and relaxing.

I know that this is an older video and I am late to the dance, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that putting your mattress on a flat piece of plywood will cause it to mold underneath unless you are constantly flipping it. If it's a non flippable mattress, you will still need to flip it and air it out at least once a week. That's what slats and / or box springs do to protect the mattress on the bottom

@@TheHomelessFirefighter very interested. Looking at vanlife and there is no perfect van so I'm thinking about a camper shell for my truck. I'm a more urban traveler and am worried about jumping in to sleep and being seen. A van has a pass thru so you just go between the rear and driver's seat... There are a lot of folks doing it in a truck and they don't seem to have problems, but a lot of them are in BLM or Forests. I'm sure the police don't care if you sleep in your car, but if a resident calls it in they have to investigate so the "stealth" would mean not having the neighbors see you climbing in to sleep at night.

I have been too Mexico, Japan, Europe next destination would love to visit Australia.

Most people spend far to much money for far too much home and then stay broke trying to sustain that. I spent 9 years living with 248 sq ft of dry warm living space and I was totally happy with that. It was comfy with a couple friends over, and not too crowded with 3. Yard space for my dog, 2 cars, and an 8X12 storage shed. You don't need more and you're pissing your money away paying for what you don't need. It's all in how you do it.
You can totally live in that truck, and live better then most people do regards quality of life. You can go where you want when you want without packing. You've got no extra utility bills, no lease or mortgage to tie you down or to worry about paying. Freedom IS quality of life so pack light and be free.

Doesn't it cost money to travel? Yes, I agree with you I've lived in my van for a year now and, I've really enjoyed it, I do have all of my nice clothes, I do have a storage wearer I have some things and, some clothes in there! I went to IKEA hot a perfect size rug for 19.99 I got a wooden framed twin futon with metal legs. I've hung some clothes up on my van, using a shower rod hanging I used the handles above the back seats I also super glued the ends because when I turned it would slip LIP out and, my clothes would be everywhere. I went to Big 5 and, got a 70.00 ice chest which I keep food and, drinks in.
