  • Meet Eli!
    A friend couldn't take care of Eli, a Brotogerias or Canary-winged or BeeBee parakeet! Cute little thing!
    Welcome Eli - what are my first impressions? You'll see his stool sample, which I took to the vet, his cage and meet him too!

    Glad to see that you got a Bee Bee Parrot. Now your flock will be complete once you get a Quaker Parrot, which is plentiful in South Florida, both in pet shops and in the wild. If you have a choice, would you pick a green, blue, or lutino Quaker?

    OMG! You got a little Brotogeris. Looks like a canary wing. Really adorable. Did you know Gloria B. (The Caique breeder) breeds them? She told me she was phasing them out and just concentrating on Caiques. I remember growing up seeing Babe’s in Woolworths. They were about $50.00! I begged my mother for one. She said no. I already had a budgie, Josephine Bonaparte, a turtle named Muddy and a miniature pinscher named Ginger. Of course being 5 you know who took care of the menagerie. I understand Bebe are sweet and affectionate. He is absolute perfection! ❤️

    Hello, I have couple of questions. Resently I stumbled over somebody who has wild Brotogeris chrysoptera, they have shorter tails, but longer more protruding beaks. The male was taken from a cat I think, which mangled its right wing and the female stayed with him, no matter what and couldn't be chased away so they took her in aswell. They are not shy climb on and search people for help, extremelly noisy and agressive in general. If they don't need you they'll run after you and attack you, they do bite and tear skin.
    Now the question. What do you feed yours to stay healthy, I sume they are similar enough.
    The person near killed them by starvation trying to feed them parrot food for lovebirds, which he thought they are, but they wouldn't ca't eat anything else than sunflower seeds and these just alittlebit. I gave them fresh apple, which they took pretty well and let them in the garden to observe them for a bit and they started hunting and vorasiously eating insects, worms andeven tryiedcatching small lizards. So apparently they need animal food too and happen they really like fish, mealworms and sugar in general. Now few weeks later they are in much better shape and the shine returned, however I didn't know that insects and worms are such significant part of their diet.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  11 місяців тому

      Yes, they can be a significant part of their diet. Like so many animals, they will eat what they can and what they find. In captivity they woudl eat pellets and fresh vegetables. The owners can try scrambled eggs and green, leafy vegetables.
      How cool that they rescued him and she came too! Awesome!

      @@ParrotBlissI sarted bringing a bit of scrambled eggs with some bird mineral+vitamins formula mixed in and they love it. Also daily fresh fruits and vegetables from local species, they do recognise them, instantly, however they are very conservative and wouldn't eat anything they are not familiar with. From the european fruits only apple, because they where "forced" to eat it the first timewhen I gave it to them, otherwise guava, mombins, sapotilla and other that growhere and they probably ate in the wild.

      Broto hybrid- I want to see a pic!

  • @motherlandbot6837
    @motherlandbot6837 2 роки тому

    This bird is either a White Winged Parakeet (Brotogeris versicolurus), or a Yellow Chevroned (Canary Winged) Parakeet (Brotogeris chiriri). Both are now established as escapees in parts of California, Florida, and Puerto Rico.
    BeeBee Parrots aka Tovi Parrots, Orange Chinned Parrots, or Dwarf Parrots (Brotogeris jugularis) were exported as wild trapped birds in large numbers to the US until the Federal ban on psittacine imports during the last century because of psittacosis. They have shorter tail feathers than Brotogeris versicolurus and B. chiriri, and have an orange area of varying size and visibility under the lower jaw (jugularis).
    After the ban was relaxed with the requirement of quarantine protocols with tetracycline treatment to eliminate Chlamydia psittaci, wild trapped Canary Wings were imported in huge numbers into the US as BeeBee Parrots. Canary Wings and White Wings were until 1997 considered different subspecies of B. versicolurus, and differ mainly in the coloration of the light colored wing area. As I'm nearly blind, I won't try to identify your specimen.
    I've never kept Brotogeris; I find their relatively elongated, rather forward pointing bills somewhat unappealing, and they are as raucous as small Aratinga species.

      I saw a breeder of Brotos this weekend- that was fun!
      She showed me an article that spoke about the Brotos you mentioned that escaped into the wild and have survived- and bred hybrids. It was a great article because it had pictues of the wings that clearly showed the difference between the Yellow-wing and white-wing vs the hybrid.
      Elon is definately a hybrid! (In case you are confused, I shfited his name from Eli to Elon)
      Elon is, of course, adjusting to a new home and environment, although he came with his cage. I'm glad he has one consistent thing for himself. Anyway, he's hardly made a sound!
      His beak has a funny curve to it- I wondered if it is because he's a hybrid. He looked funny to me, not quite like a Canary-wing. Now I know why!
      What species did you breed?
      Thank you for writing to me- losing your sight... not an easy thing, so I appreciate your writing to me even more!
