    KiwiRail run ferries because they needed a rail ferry to carry trains between the two islands. Then they started carrying trucks and cars and found they could make more money from them. Today KiwiRail has only 1 train ferry left. 6 February is a public holiday in NZ, hence why the Platform 9 3/4 dry cleaners was closed and probably why the ferry was so full. As a kid my family would often take this ferry to go on holiday. My parents almost always buy club lounge access these days because it is less crowded, quieter abd the fiid and drinks are good. ❤ the video.

    Beautiful day to cross between our Islands, welcome to the South Island, my little slice of paradise. Have a fab time making memories.
    As an aside, the wording on your pie-packet No.8. is a Kiwi phrase dear to our hearts, means if anything breaks down and needs a temporary fix until next pay-day or saving up, just use the No.8.Wire. "she'll be right, it'll do", endless possibilities.
    Began back in the day from our commonsense, no nonsense Farmers. Xx

      Thats how I felt when Kuga came to Aus and sampled our trains. Rickety old piles of junk compared to the mighty Shinkansen. It was embarrassing.

    In Tasmania which is just across the Tasman Sea from New Zealand we are getting our new ferries linking us to the rest of Australia, so you might like to catch the Spirit of Tasmania before the new ships arrive .

    Kiwi rail is government owned, and the crossing is treated as being part of the state highway network (I believe the Kiwirail ferries are counted as being part of state highway 1, the highway that starts at Cape Reinga in the north and goes through to Bluff in the south).

    Great trip. Correct me if I wrong, the Cook Strait known as one of the most dangerous waters in the world.

    • @sambaker3233
      @sambaker3233 16 днів тому

      Yes, the roaring forties wind blows directly into the channel making crossings dangerous. There are also deep channels.

    • @PaulSmith-bb7lv
      @PaulSmith-bb7lv 12 днів тому

      No, the Cook Strait is one of the WINDIEST crossings not one of the most dangerous. But it is only about an hour and a half when you are exposed to the open sea. Many passengers get seasick when the seas are rough but that is because they are not used to the motion of the ship. So the reputation of the Strait is (in my view) undeserved. Any competent sailor can manage it very safely. Just watch the weather and use a bit of common sense. I have sailed in lots of seas that have been more threatening. Try the North Atlantic or the North Sea in a storm. Not just 90 minutes there - more like three days for the Atlantic and one day for the North sea. Sorts the men from the boys. Great video Kuga.

    Always interesting seeing your home country through another's eyes. Yeah, it's a shame our ferries are having problems and the current government canned a contract that would've seen Kiwirail/Interislander get new ones. Ah well.

  • @JonathanButler-zd8qt
    @JonathanButler-zd8qt 16 днів тому

    Wow, Kuga must be wealthy to afford all of this.

  • @canadagood
    @canadagood 14 днів тому

    I get the idea that Kuga really doesn't like talking and interacting with people. I have watched many ferry videos from Kuga and others who were travelling long distances in Japan and Europe. In those videos the dining rooms, corridors and public areas rarely have a few people visible.
    I am personally used to taking ferries on the west coast of Canada. The ferries to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands operate like public buses. They are often crowded with reservations recommended for travel anytime close to a weekend or public holiday. With few trips over two hours in length, the first action of most passengers is to rush to the cafeteria to grab a meal. A big lineup ensues but generally everyone has time to eat.
    $86 NZ for three-hour lounge pass seems outrageous to me but then I enjoy watching people travelling in crowds.
