According to a video Geno Samuel made about the Sentinelese, Chau also tried to speak to them in the South African language Xhosa for some reason. He seriously expected that the population of an isolated island thousand of miles away from Africa would understand it just because
@@pablocasas5906that's certainly odd. When the linguistics courses were mentioned as part of the preparation, I'd thought he was learning the language of the local Andaman areas or the like since I heard their language was (thought to be) similar.
@@pablocasas5906I’m not a an expert in linguistics, but if people migrated from Africa to other parts of the world thousands of years ago, wouldn’t it make since that this isolated group might share commonalities with African languages similar to how the language in Iceland is similar to Old Norse.
Apart from the danger of visitors being killed, I've heard it's also for the protection of the natives themselves that the island is off limits. Being isolated for so long, it's expected that they don't have immunity to a lot of diseases that the rest of the world does. If a visitor were to unwittingly bring a communicable disease with him to the tribe, they could very well be wiped out.
Yup. I watched a documentary about tasmania once. The UK would send prisoners ect there....they brought things as such as the common cold, and it wiped a big part of the community. This, paired with the violence they imposed on the people, pretty much made it mass genocide.
That’s likely why they are so hostile. When foreigners came in the past it lead to mass death of the tribe. It seems fairly obvious why they don’t want anyone to come
I just want to take a moment to point out that the Sentinelese thought Chau was so dumb that they used the opportunity to teach their children how to shoot. If being target practice for their kids wasn't going to get through to him, nothing would.
Regardless of the eventual fate of those two crabbers who were killed, getting blackout drunk in a tiny fishing boat out in the ocean is one of the worst ideas imaginable.
What more scary is the fact that they never retrieved Chau’s body. The fishermen who smuggled him to the Island said that they saw how the tribesmen dragged Chau’s corpse inside the jungle

Or would you be selfish and never go and tell them? And what if a friend thinks youre lying, wouldn't you attempt to drag him to the oasis even if it meant hurting his feelings?? That's what missionaries do. Christians believe they have found the creator of humans. He has a purpose for each human and died for every single human (including you). So if you believe in him and accept his free gift of salvation, you will spend eternity with him in heaven after death. I found this amazing news not by my own goodness... Not at all. There is a joke that seems similar to the John story. There was going to be a big flood in small village, everyone was escaping, except one priest who sat silently on the church stairs. When people asked him why he's not going, he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Everyone just shruged and fled town. Several hours later a rescue boat appeared, swimmed to the priest who was now on the first floor of the church. The rescuers asked him to go with them but he replied with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers tried to talk him out of it, but with no avail, so they went searching for other people. Several hours later the waters started to reach 3rd floor of the church, the rescuers swimmed again to the priest, asked him to go with them, but he again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me", so they went away. At night, the rescuers tried one more time, the water was so high the only visible thing around was the top of the church tower. Clinging to the cross at the top was the priest. Rescues swimmed to him, and begged him to come with them, because if he stay here, he will drown. The priest again declined with "I trust God, He will spare me". Rescuers swimmed away shaking thier heads. At midnight the priest fell asleep and fell into the water where he drown. At the heaven gates he asked St Peter "Why the God didn't spare me, I had all the trust in Him!" and St Peter replied "You moron, three times He sent the boat for you!"

He didn’t make a mistake, he knew the truth. “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? I've heard of this story before. They are very hostile and deadly whenever they see outsiders who are unfamiliar. Safe to say they will probably stay isolated for a long time.
kidnapping actual children with some adults, and then returning them alone to tell the most horrific tale they ever will tell probably played an important role towards their hostility
Exactly. That's why I can't specifically blame the people. They also see something flying in the sky, a most likely loud machine that is coming towards them, ect (and not forgetting about the people kidnapping Sentinelese two children). They would probably be hostile for also that reason. The Australian Indigenous (I'm making an example) killed 50 British colonists in protection, so they are not the only ones.
This reminds me what happened after people climbed Mount Everest for the first time. A perfect definition of the phrase "Just because you can doesn't mean you should"
A lot of breakthroughs in science, which have helped or outright saved billions of lives, were done with the mentality "eh, I'll see if I can". You're using bad logic, is my point.
This just reminds me that this is the true culture of black people if white people never got involved with them. Asians never wanted anything to do with them. I guess there's a reason why Asians have the highest intelligence score in all races.
I think if they’re chucking spears at you, it should be enough clarification they don’t want you around and people need to respect it. It’s like a spider, you know it will bite if you annoy it and it will bite you, if you do annoy it.
One thing vaguely mentioned by Sunny and often theorized by many specialists concerns the 1880 British expedition (when they had the brilliant idea of abducting the children and the couple). I, like many others, believe that this was a breaking point in establishing friendly and lasting contact with them. But why? In addition to the whole incident of kidnapping kids (which is already very bad), they brought them back to the island apparently very sick. Just like the natives in the Americas during their first contact with the West, it was an epidemiological disaster. Unknown diseases, to which the natives had no antibodies, massively killed them. Unfortunately, the sentinel kids may have transmitted and created a huge epidemic on the island. I suppose that, for generations, the Sentinelese pass down the belief of a curse brought by strangers from outside the island. You can see them burying many of the outsiders' gifts as a reminder of the last time these gifts brought them diseases. Even though the anthropologist in the 90s did manage to establish some form of contact with them, it was only possible because of the 20-25 years of regularly bringing them supplies. And even then, some of them threatened him. Unfortunately, I think it is culturally accepted among them that the outside world is dangerous and that people will try to kill or hurt them...
Makes you really wonder what would have happened if the 1800’s expedition didn’t kidnap the kids? I’m not saying we’d have a perfect relationship with them, for all accounts it seems even before the kidnapping they were hostile towards outsiders but maybe they’d be less aggressive towards random passer-by’s and people who end up there accidentally, hell maybe they’d build boats and see where the people beyond the island come from because in that timeline they wouldn’t have the mind set of “bad stuff happens to people who leave the island”
@@mrcritical6751 Exactly, quite an interesting idea to consider if things worked differently. That's a rather complicated theory compared to the more obvious answer.. They're still living in a tribal community. IF you hear hooves coming at you.. You think it's a horse.. Not a zebra. Why choose the more complicated answer when the simple answer is the more obvious and logical answer. They're still living in a tribal mentality so they fight off invaders.. For those people they took from the island, that is 100% what it would feel like for one of us to be abducted by extra terrestrials. Crazy to think about.
Not only that but the kids they brought back carried deadly diseases that are believed to have taken many lives. Those people don't have the same immunity to pathogens we have acquired a strong resistance force. This must have felt like a curse was brought upon them. No wonder they now don't want anything to do with anybody from outside the Island
I had the same thought. They were taken to a place that would feel entirely alien to them. Sadly though, this has been the case throughout history. This is just the only recent example.
Yes and that story was probably passed down from generation to generation on that island as being the worst thing that could ever happen to them… and they probably train every day to protect themselves from the next “alien invasion”. There’s no relationship to be made with these people - either leave them alone completely or conquer them completely and put up a 4 seasons resort there. There’s no in between

It's almost like he believed speaking an unknown language, waving his arms around and repeatedly invading their land would somehow get them to all of a sudden convert to Christianity, start attending church and speak perfect English. How 'bout you chose to leave while we are asking nicely." Pretty polite, when you think about it.
The Sentinelese prefer isolation so much because they have observed that whenever the island made contact with an outsider for longer than a short encounter like with the anthropologist, disease ravaged their community (since they probably have no immunity to the diseases of the outside world). Such observations must've been carried down orally, each generation warning the next to not let an outsider stay, lest disease follow him and rip through their community. And since the island is so small, even a handful of deaths is their equivalent of the Black Death. Thus, generation over generation this belief has only been reinforced: "do not let the unfamiliar man stay, for Death himself accompanies him."
Imagine how much inbreeding would be going on there though. By space year 2050 anyone on that island will be a creature from something from a horror movie.

North Sentinal island is such a fascinating place. It's like a brief glimpse into the distant past. A jungle island completely untouched by technology and a tribe so primitive that their technology doesn't stretch far beyond simple construction and spears. It's a precious location that should absolutely be left alone as it's one of the only places left that really reminds mankind of it's roots. The Sentinalese want to be left alone and we should respect their wishes.
Sentinelese are most likely not that primitive, fire is a pretty old invention that is universally known by humans, not to mention it's been found they have used the metal from a wrecked ship to make metal arrowheads, so they most likely know how to work metal as well.
It’s not precious it’s an abomination that they are unfortunately stuck in. Nobody can even talk to them or bring them up to speed because their immune system is just as far behind us their social system is, I feel bad for them.
@@NockblockThey don't know anything different though. It's the same as modern kids wondering how boomers lived without internet or phones... You can't miss out on something you don't know exists yet.
It's fascinating how the tribe despite seeing advanced technologies like flying vehicles(like when the helicopter checked on them), seeing modern clothing from the anthropologist, and modern ships, they just don't care. They aren't mesmerized, mindblown or awestruck by flashy, modern things like these. I doubt they would even give a damn if you showed them a smartphone or a laptop. They have their spears and their bows, they have their trees, the sea and they have each other. They don't need anything else. They don't want anything else. They have boats so they could explore the outside world whenever they wanted. But they never did. This island is their home, it is their entire world, the only world they ever knew, and the only world they'll ever need.
@@chiararomano1818 sadly modern humans contaminate the tribes and kill unintentionally. our microbes evolved differently. this is what Sentinelese have learned and do not let anyone come close in contact aside from one scientists who spend over 20 years every month leaving coconuts and other useful items for them. modern medicine may not even be able to heal them.
5:35 as far as the tsunami goes, people on neighboring islands that share some common origins with the sentinelese people were also completely fine during the tsunami, and that's because they had oral traditions about a huge wave coming after the shoreline recedes, so they knew to go to higher ground. native peoples had a better warning system than most of indonesia.
Learn by past experience which is most likely happen in one time due to its place (like done by the natives) vs condoning ignorance (many tsunami sensors in Indonesia were stolen, and many cases like that where EWS equipment are either abandoned or stolen). That's why the natives has more wisdom regarding this one, even though most people would rather portray them as backwards and out-of-touch.
"I hollered, "My name is John!" as an American, I'm sure this guy was an American because thus far only Brits and Americans believe that anyone can understand English if you YELL. IT. SLOWLY. AT. I witness this a lot when I travel out of the country. Some jacked up entitled American will speak slowly, loudly, and top it off with puppeteer arms as that will steer directly to comprehension🥴🔥
To be fair there’s a reason Americans do that. It might be because English is the lingua franca of the world, so a lot people end up at least knowing some words? It’s crazy what happens when you actually use 1% of your brain cells before commenting, because then you would have been able to realize that.

This, paired with the violence they imposed on the people, pretty much made it mass genocide.
that already happened, and killed 2/3 of them
But Jesus will save them all now thanks to this man. Right?
That’s likely why they are so hostile. When foreigners came in the past it lead to mass death of the tribe. It seems fairly obvious why they don’t want anyone to come
Why does everything have to be about diseases and sicknesses and immunity and this and that
I just want to take a moment to point out that the Sentinelese thought Chau was so dumb that they used the opportunity to teach their children how to shoot. If being target practice for their kids wasn't going to get through to him, nothing would.

Run back and tell your dying friends right? Or would you be selfish and never go and tell them?

That's what missionaries do. Christians believe they have found the creator of humans. He has a purpose for each human and died for every single human (including you). So if you believe in him and accept his free gift of salvation, you will spend eternity with him in heaven after death.
I found this amazing news not by my own goodness... Not at all. One of the early church founder "Paul" described himself add the 'chief of sinners'. Several hours later a rescue boat appeared, swimmed to the priest who was now on the first floor of the church.

@ it’s a metaphor. If 37 likes from people can figure it out surely you can.
Very Interesting Theory.

Exactly, quite an interesting idea to consider if things worked differently. However, now the island is heavily protected, and I don't think they will ever leave on their own to meet us or explore the world.
It's sad, but in a way, I like to imagine that they may be happy with their way of life.
That's literally the answer. Theirs plenty of cases all over the world of this tribal mentality still being prevelant.. Now you're not trying to argue that the English took over every bloody tribe in the world and now universally all these tribes hate white people are you? For those people they took from the island, that is 100% what it would feel like for one of us to be abducted by extra terrestrials. Crazy to think about.
Not only that but the kids they brought back carried deadly diseases that are believed to have taken many lives. Those people don't have the same immunity to pathogens we have acquired a strong resistance force.

Yes. These guys are always presented as antagonistic, but they always warn people before they do anything, and after all, it's not the Sentinelese who are invading someone else's home, it's other people antagonizing them. I got a kick out of the little kid who shot his bible. In one fell swoop, the kid said, "Look you, I could have shot you dead easily, but I chose not to. How 'bout you chose to leave while we are asking nicely." Pretty polite, when you think about it.
Now he’s with Ja-hay-zus. It was a win-win
Maybe they more clued in that we thought, I’d be shooting the dude too if he wanted to bring those priest pedos to my kids

"I hollered, "My name is John!" as an American, I'm sure this guy was an American because thus far only Brits and Americans believe that anyone can understand English if you YELL. IT. SLOWLY. AT. SOMEONE.
Having had a few Australians friends visit me in Texas, I never saw them do this to our Latino population and no Canadian did this to me when it was clear I didn't know French.
He really thought he was christopher columbus 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💀💀💀💀💀💀💀😭😭😭💀💀
I witness this a lot when I travel out of the country. Some jacked up entitled American will speak slowly, loudly, and top it off with puppeteer arms as that will steer directly to comprehension🥴🔥
