It is interesting to note, what a great emphasis the passage "Credo in unam sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam" (I believe in one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church) receives not just in this mass, but also in Byrd's other two masses. It is certainly due to the fact, that these masses were composed in a country where the Catholic Church was oppressed at that time. Since all the other great Renaissance composers were living in countries where Catholicism was in a position of power, they did not accord such a great emphasis to this passage of the Creed.
Most certainly the case. Catholics who chose to worship in a liturgy in which this Mass would have been sung were literally taking their lives in their hands by doing so.
