- "Soul Makossa" is a song that influenced the sound of disco and inspired Michael Jackson to write "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" and also affected Kool & The Gang back in 1972.
The tune was so hot and hard to get (it was an import from Cameroon) found in a New York record shop by DJ David Mancuso who immediately added it to his playlist. The response was overwhelming and scarce copies of the original by Manu Dibango led to covers being recorded to fill the void. Kool & The Gang were asked to re record the song and they went to the studio where they began riffing off the song and wrote three hit songs, "Jungle Boogie", "Funky Stuff" and "Hollywood Swinging" instead.
Ricky West co wrote the song with the band and the story in the song actually happened to Ricky. Put down in the studio, it was wildly received and topped the R& B chart in June, 1974.
Madnrill's "Fencewalk" (1973) was a song rhythm written in threes which Bayyan heard and them made that the bassline. The song was played by famed DJ Frankie Crocker of WBLS FM New York whose nickname was "Hollywood".
Kool & the Gang sounds fresh as ever !!!
This song will always be at the top of my list. Yes indeed. HOLLYWOOD SWINGING. a down home Jam.
I won four backstage passes from a local AM radio station. Kool and The Gang was opened by the group War. The year was 1976.

The one thing that makes the Seventies the best decade ever in my opinion is the broad spectrum of the music 🎶 that came from it.
With the sounds and genres emerging and evolving, the world 🌎 was playing a vast amount of different songs from different cultures and listening as well as enjoying it.
This is one of the best examples of how artists were able to crossover from their own chart to another genre and not be called sellouts.
And it still stands the test of time!
🥁😩🥁👍💯
@hermananderson The Seventies-arguably the birthdate of the OGs.😎

Takes me back to the Unity Station Lowrider battles, in Los Santos.
Kool & the gang was one of the top bands when I was growing up dancing at the sock hops in jr High School, But not to many people knew that Kool & the gang also put out a album under a different name. That group's name was called The Kay Gees and there hit song on that album was called 'Keep on Bumpin' and it lead into the new dance craze the Bump and the Double Bump. The other groups that exploited the new dance craze called the Bump was the Commadores with there hit single named 'Do the Bump'. These two groups set the stage on the new Bump dancing music with these singles that rock the Dance floors with the coragraphic music that they played gave me a smooth rhythm on the dance floors. Classic unforgettable times for me and that will never be forgotten with me.

More or less, it was an intro to the Disco era. I remember bumping with my 2 sisters in HS. Later, We went to the Last National Bank, the top Disco in the San Antonio area. I also remember the LNB had no competition.
