- In 2011, the author of the book for the musical "La Cage aux Folles," Harvey Fierstein, took over the role of Albin in the second Tony-winning Broadway revival of "La Cage." Fierstein's Act One finale "I Am What I Am" has long been one of the most popular videos on this channel, so I am reposting it, for the first time in its original HD1080p format (3:07), preceded by Fierstein in the title song (also HD 1080p, with Christine Andreas and Wilson Jermaine Heredia).
Harvey pretty much owns the part. The intensity of the perfomance is just astonishing. Beautiful!
God bless, Harvey Fierstein, now and always! A human treasure!
Honestly, my favorite version of “I am what I am” EVER! Quote me on it.
The scene that leads up to this number makes this song even more powerful. Like Roses Turn from Gypsy and And I'm Telling You from Dreamgirls. Both great numbers on their own, but when you see the build up it's gut wrenching.
Was lucky to see him (and Douglas, too) in this wonderful revival. Loved Harvey’s performance so so much.
It’s the hardest possible thing to not love Harvey Fierstein.
I had the privilege of seeing Harvey in this production - an afternoon I will never forget! Thank you for reposting this.
one of the greatest performances i h ave ever seen live!
Literally cried my eyes out im what i am is so beautifull.
I saw this production four times and had the pleasure of seeing him for my birthday that year.
La Cage will always be one of my favorite musical comedies of all time with a score that delights as much as it touches your heart. Thank you so much for posting this Spiderwoman!
One of the best revivals of recent years. Douglas Hodge was great, and so was Harvey.
What a joy this production was! As a young gay person who wasn't out yet, I felt an immediate connection to Albin and his insecurity that I wasn't yet able to identify. I'll never forget Dale Hensley, the u/s who went on for Harvey, who blew the entire audience out of the water. Any chance you have "A Little More Mascara"? What an identity affirming number! :)
I. Love. Harvey. So. Much.
Brilliant 👏 ❤❤❤❤
My ever the most favorite movie is "Torch Song Trilogy", I fell in love with him then and forever, and I am a straight woman. He is the best.
VERY good wow
I Would Love To See Harvey Play Mama Rose In Gypsy.
He´s not handsome, too fat, can´t sing or even move properly but what is there not to love about him?! His facial expressions are out of this world. As a gay man who has his best years behind him (as a performer) I feel everything about Harvey IS Albin. What I wouldn´t do to just have a 5 minute talk with him ... Can´t find the right words to express my admiration.
On an... angle😆💯
and the payoff for that line really comes in the song. Why did I not "get" that until I saw the writer, Harvey, play the part? Well talk about clarity of meaning!
This is incredible. I am currently playing Albin and I’ve been looking for this performance. Do you happen to have the whole show? Thank you for all you do!!
Man and woman in one person.
What's he saying when he's bantering with the audience?
Is this a human? It looks like a cross between the Sea Witch and Devine. But that voice!
Revival...too soon?
Probably no revival for a while, as neither of the two Broadway revivals was a financial hit, although both won Best Musical Revival Tonys.
With the current political climate, it feels like the best time for a revival
