I’m genuinely impressed with any camera that can focus on a speaker cone behind a grille like that, as quick as that was. Damn.
As was I!
The distortion you see on the scope is cross over distortion, where one transistor pair cuts off before the other pair starts to conduct. That means you're getting into class B or class C, and you want to be in class AB.
I love old tech and that thing is a beast of a radio with all those discrete transistors!
I'm guessing the Hi-Fi/DX switch is for variable IF bandwidth. On DX it narrows up the selectivity so you can pull weak stations out from between or adjacent stronger stations. The downfall in that setting is that you lose some of the higher frequency audio.
That's a well, built, well designed radio. Not cheap and probably a good performer.
This is actually probably now one of my favorite videos on the channel. Great work, and what a fascinating little radio!!!
Who would have thought that one transistor radio could provide so much enertainment! Thanks for tinkering with the Ge to Si transistor mod, was great info for future reference.
Listening to you scroll through the dial on this thing really makes me think we just need to get rid of all TVs and radios and computers. The world was better off before all this crap.
Yes I agree life would be simpler like living the life of the Marlboro Man but without puffing on those damn things
The only thing worth listening to was that station that ticks off the seconds and tells the time!
Hi Brad, will have to check your channel as not had a single notification of late, surprise surprise. I think you're right in some ways, computers are a great tool for learning and sharing information across the world but it's too easy for it to become controlled and regulated and distilled down to what we're "supposed" to see or hear or know. Just like TV & more recently radio also has. 2 way Radio sets & computers full of quality reference information are probably the two exceptions I'd make, the rest of it can go though. (The first part of the internet to be dissolved under my rule would be the "in-derp-endent" fact checkers AKA propagand-pass filters)

Literally a video I've been waiting for. Have the same (non-working) radio in my closet, with flavor country additive. Might drag it out now.
Realtone became Soundesign in the 70's.
Ah yes, my favourite radio content: Maniacal screaming and laughing.
Your Realtone Globepacer 11Band shortwave.MW FM Radio Receiver is kool ShaNgoo66
The old radios are better then the new radios of today
The 18 transistors are fighting with each other.
Really want to know the station sounds like Chinese. Only rarely get an Asian station or broadcast in Louisiana.
@@greggaieck4119 It's interesting that they can still receive stations instead of being obsoleted like analog TV was.
Don't own a CRT or even an FM radio.... but I won't ever miss a shango066 video!
Just want to say a big Thank You for all the videos, I've learnt so much from you, and enjoyed 100's of hours of your work. Joe, Dublin, Ireland
One of the radios I lusted for during my teenage years back in the mid-to-late sixties.
A friend of mine just gave me one of these... Today, I started cleaning it up inside and out.
This video is extraordinarily useful. Thank you!
Realtone Globepacers would make a great name for a band.
Or a ball team.
Is'nt that David Byrnes group?
smaller rated output transistor are more linear. Replacing just with 2n3906 or S8550 and rebiasing to 5 or 10 ma standing current for the pair should work well to reduce crossover distortion. No need for darlingtons. 1 silicon junction is almost equal to 2 germanium junctions. Increasing the emitter resistor to about 10 ohms should make it stable thermally.
15:05
Discharge of static charge is not constant DC, it is a DC pulse, of course it will pass through to the secondary coil. As long as there is a rising and falling off of current, a spike will pass through. That spike could potentially blow open the junction of the transistor.
Look at all the transistors in the push pull audio output stages.. wow. Very cool radio. It seems someone put some love into designing and manufacturing those.
If you're still alive, you haven't had enough booster shots.
I used to absolutely hate static on radios and demanded listening to clear stations or else turn it off. I've changed. Now I prefer the sound of pure static over the content on the stations.
No kidding. We are in a world when there’s so much mass hypnosis going on it makes me want to puke.
I tune my hf to a dead spot above 8 mhz at bedtime with the volume low and it helps me to fall asleep hearing the static and static crashes from thunderstorms.

Incandescent lamps may be inefficient, but the "light temperature" is better, to me and my old eyes can see much better! 🙃
I have the same radio but it's labeled as the Lafayette. It draws 25 milliamps on a.m. at a medium volume. The radio seems to work better reception wise with the switch on hi-fi.
Lafayette were an importer I think. I have a couple of their general coverage receiver. I think many come out of Japan from Trio became known as Kenwood. Not to be confused with the food mixers.
I like your comments that related to environment around you..I think you live very close to the air field that is why always we are hearing aircraft flying ..and you said that plane is blowing my mind😂😂like me Iam living close to avaition college training..so from early morning aircraft is flying and passing overhead soecially small A/C...
I've got a Realtone 10 transistor radio, mid size, AM only, hotter than a pistol. They seem very well built for sensitivity and selectability. Another good one, Shango!
I had one of these maybe 10 years ago and it was a helluva performer. Extremely overbuilt and heavy, and it had that signature Japanese portable rattle of a few random machine screws that had backed themselves out. Had a lot of fun DX’ing longwave NDBs with it. Mine was a slightly earlier version from 1963- slightly different tuning knob and the badges were different. The VHF aircraft band was cheesily labeled “aerodrome control” and the whip antenna was about six feet long with a pointless ball swivel at the base that could only angle maybe 30°.
It’s not just “high fidelity”,it’s “ULTRA high fidelity!”
According to research online this radio was made in 1965. there was also a version of this radio sold under the “Lafayette” brand name. Realtone later became “Soundesign” in 1968.
It actually looks like a well built radio. I wonder how much this would have cost when it was new.
My sister had a Soundesign stereo in her bedroom in the 80's! That name brings back some nice memories.
That radio is well built! Overbuilt, but we'll constructed
So heavy, Shango thought it would be loaded with (leaking) batteries!
@@LakeNipissing He thought wrong. 😂
Great video! I've got one with the original box and owners manual. I quit using it because of the noisy controls. Maybe I'll get motivated to clean them after your video. Thanks!
I like the rotary dial stuff in these multiband radios. In Brazil we had a very popular one made by Philco, the "Transglobe", which many enthusiasts say that was made "for export" but there is absolutelly no mention to it outside, even on Internet. It's a great radio, tho.
Shango, given the current Russian Federation/Ukraine situation can you recommend another source for the Malachit SDR. I really want one but cannot find them anywhere, even used? Is there another model or brand that is comparable or better that I could purchase. IN addition to being a great toy with a lot of potential as well as uses, it seems to be one kick-ass performer. Thank you in advance for taking time to answer.
BTW, love the videos and content. I learn a lot watching your down to earth videos and laugh myself silly at the commentary!
Would like to see you revisit this one, and do a full serious alignment for the sole purpose of seeing just how good a field radio this would make given that it has all the bands and quality potential for it to be a real (tone) performer!
If it is a contender, and one still slightly wins-out, then it would be interesting to look at the two circuits to see their similarities and differences.
Great Video & Thanks for Posting! 73...
At 3:59. captioning considers the airplane to be [Music].
... because, as we know, the airplanes are *_music_* to Shango's ears!
Wow 18 transistors I love it this is the royalty quality of transistor radios. When I was growing up in the sixties six transistors were mediocre but still able to get a decent sound out of that especially when you want to listen to rock and roll on AM radio. Image '60s am alone that's about 8 or 10 dollars in New York.. my first AM. only radio was a Miland, don't remember the spelling. Sharp corp. uad nice styles Panasonic was so so styles but they work great with the automatic frequency control switch for FM. and I found a couple of Sony six trans.thst were real portable little bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes. Nothing like a two and a half inch speaker and loud it was.Couldn't afford a 8 transistor AM only they were like $15 back in 1966. So I envied those students who had them. I was around 14 15 years old.
. Anyway I like your reviews especially with that quasar TV set you called horrible in the subject line.😅 Man you're being real nasty commenting on those cheap cheesy plastic floral designs on the grill.. I only started listening to the beginning of your 18 transistor take apart commentary I got to listen to the rest of it later today. But hearing that this short wave was souped up with 18 transistors man that's super quality you'll be pulling distance stations on the AM and shortwave frequencies. I'm going to listen to the rest of your report now. Good luck stay safe and I keep listening and giving a thumbs up every time take care happy holidays happy Christmas
16:46 “We gotta Blih-bluh-buh-blibla-blih station.”
Very clean unit
I wish I had the patience and the skill to fix these kind of things. I could hardly check for continuity. This guy has skill and experience
Hahaha the caption picked up the crackling knob as music and laughter.
Сильно напоминает советскую сборку..... Аппарат зачётный. я бы приобрёл такой.
I will have to admit that I watch I lot of your videos. I put this one on because I knew the vintage of the radio would be a germanium transistor design. From personal experience I know they can be a challenge. I will have to admit, you lost me with KVAX. I finally figured it out about 45 minutes into the video. I laughed so hard when I finally got it! So funny!
Alex Jones 12.160, so "9-12" was off! 45:52
THIS RADIO IS WORTH A RESTORE.
"Alex Jones was right again...." He hasn't played the "I wanna be Alex Jones" song in a long time.
Germanium flavoured extravaganza? GFE! Thanks, got it will use it :)
8:03 “I always enjoy sticking my screwdriver in a hole on a Sunday afternoon.”
Shango066: Come for the content, stay for the Shangoisms. The blambulance was rototwerbulating around the suburb after a mumble rapper licked some nicotine glazed vacuum filled picture bulbs.
Incandescent lamps are beautiful .. I'd absolutely love to have a clock with those long life bulb segments that Franblanche once showed...
I don't know why it's just a resurrection. It's a nice radio.
I've got old cars in the same condition. They sort of work. Sometimes.
The FM rf stage is the ONLY transistor in a socket. That socket was put in by someone missing with the radio.
A golden screwdriver's dream
I would tighten all those screws down they look a bit loose to me !
“We’ve got 3 AM mumb bup mrlshfgobludbuhda…” that should look great on closed caption…this literally made my day!
Just picked up one of these gems at a ham fest recently. It was heavily modified, with the tuning cap mounted on the right side with no dial pointer! It had all new electrolytics replaced and is quite a performer with excellent audio. The AM and shortwave have exceptional reception at night. The only drawback is knowing where you are on the dial. Maybe a broken dial string?
So cool listening to IF with your other radio
I think the problem with the original transistors may lie with the driver. ICEO of .34mA against .07 with it's neighbor in a Darlington arraignment. Sounds kind of leaky to me. It would be interesting to swap the drivers and leave the outputs to change the pairing.
2SA70's were the in IF stages of the early Sony 5" TV's. They had the dreaded tin whisker problem, similar design to the UK Mullard AF 117 type transistor.Cutting the transistor screen/can connection may make it work.
just cutting screen lead can cause instability, i've had this problem, need to blast the short out with a large charged capacitor..
20:00 . . . Shango: "Wow, I'm dumb."
66% of Californians sure were... they had a chance to really make changes with Mr. Elder!
Awesome radio, the only thing that bothers me is the tuning knob seems to work backwards. I'd love to see you take it out to the desert for reception testing.
A beautiful radio.
Shango Thanks for you informative and educational content. Quick question where did you get your malahit sdr from ? I like that form factor but can't find it. What version of firmware is it running ? Thanks
Hi Shango0. Cool radio, really enjoy your weekend videos. All my best.
The Tone Control circuitry in this Radio is interesting.
Instead of just a simple Treble-Cut arrangement we have an arrangement which gives us treble increase with turning the knob one way and treble reduction when the knob is turned the other way.
With the quiescent supply current at about 42mA I wonder if it would still be practical to run this from a Dry Cell Battery.
Very, very, very nice Radio 📻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I got a lesson in biasing transistors today. Thanks!
Shango66 Radio, the 'non biased' channel. 😉😁🙃😂
I really love this radio, I wish I could get one of these in the UK, but then I guess I wouldn't know how to fix it up
You're having way too much fun with that sdr
Very nice hand drawn free lettered schematic.
my money is that whatever Dan says will not be the problem. will end up being the problem.
I think the output stage using the two transformers was matched to the germanium transistors, but as they had such a variance in thermal behaviour, many manufacturers chose to find a pair of transistors most closely matched from a large container of many.. I see some silicon transistors in a TO-220 package are the PNP Darlington type (TIP 105), but I think the SOT‐32 package with the small TO-92 as a Darlington configuration seems to work equally well with thermal stability.. From what I see and hear, the hFE of the silicon transistors is very close to that of the original germanium type...
Ahhhhh another session of our fav smooth voiced shango
I play at 1.25 to speed him up.
I had a Realtone radio when I was a kid.
“”AAAAAHHH”. Not sure 🤔 what all that means. Great 👍 product with the name “Truetone on the front. 18 transistors. Those Germaniums always burn 🔥 out. The bonus back then was that schematic. That’s so ya can service your radio 📻 from home 🏠. This thing is kind of like 👍 a LEGO set, or a model. The only trouble 👿 is that Fry’s Electronics, and Radio 📻 Shack are now defunct. No more capacitors, resistors, or transistors. Your friend, Jeff.
Ultra High Fidelity!!! Woweee!!! A Zenith Transoceanic copy cat. It WAS nice of them to label the board with the transistor types. Again, transistor quantity overload!
Radio molto interessante, circuito molto ordinato
Could be the impedance of the input and output transformers isn't happy with the silicon transistors ?
That 😂 at 57:05 just kills me every time I hear it 😂 lol. Thanks for the comic relief and another good video 👍
What a beautiful and elaborately made radio! 👍
Today you only get this DAB crap.
Dude! You’re making want one of those SDRs real bad.
Just got mine a few days ago. Haven’t been able to put it down
@@knifeswitch5973 Really? You like it and think it's worthwhile for old school guys?
@@knifeswitch5973 How is the noise floor on those things, with all that digital DSP in it ....
@@johnnytacokleinschmidt515 I really do enjoy it. My thought was purely “OK it’s cheap enough to find out what SDR is about”. But this thing is a little powerhouse.
@@watershed44 there are digital artifacts but the blanker, noise reduction and other filters are great. You can really pull a good receive out of the RF soup. Only real complaint so far is really close stations completely overload the front end.
Love the speaker grill on that radio👍⚛
@3:20 - I haven't been a subscriber long, but you seem genuinely intrigued by this contrivance. I look forward to the rest of the program.
Cold solder joints is very common for a old set been sitting for years
I used to find cool old radios like these all the time at goodwill for a couple dollars. Always enjoyed the gamble as many worked or needed repairs. Now I never see anything worth buying as they will not accept these items or they throw them in the dumpster and will not let you retrieve items they throw away.
They tell me it won't sell and it a liability for the store.
It's really a shame cause so many people love to repair older transistor radio sets.
They even throw away table lamps as they said a customer got electrocuted while plugging one in to test it at the store.
But hey, they sell flat screen LCD tv sets with obvious damage to the screen for more than a new one.
Better yet they sell used ear protection plugs for 10 cents each.
I was sure there would be a nightmare pandemic under that battery cover.
I really want to heft one of these old radios for that old sound in my shop what would you recommend? Get a vacuumed tube dealio in-line amp or a old radio
Love your Videos !!!!! but hearing the stupid radio reminds me why I dont listen to the radio !!!!! Rush was the only radio left but thats gone. keep up the great work !!!!
Even the Amp-meter is laughing..
Cool looking radio. I will have two pints of whatever those Chinese guys were drinking at the start. How lucky not to have tin whiskers in your part of the world. I agree transistor failure are infrequent unless you live in the U.K. AF117 enough said right!
I was looking at the schematic and the thought that came to my mind was to try just using those two medium power audio transistors on their own by putting a link across where the base-collector junction for the drivers would have been and omitting the resistors for the drivers.
Adjust idle current for best sound and go with it.
I'd say you'd have less output, but no cross over distortion.
87.75 WRME-LD (MeTV-FM) is still on the air in the Chicagoland area. I listen to it every so often. What is interesting is that they still transmit on the audio subcarrier 87.75. They never retuned the transmitter.
GREAT VIDEO TO WATCH THANKS.
Are those caps loose and changing as you shook them? That didn't look good.
There are two kinds of people. Those that pull off the clear plastic dial cover and those that do not.
Also changing the output stage to silicon isn't all that hard-- just turn the 2K pot to about half its current resistance. That should be pretty close. No need for any further tweaking of components.
If you touch the antenna with a static charge, the resultant change in voltage over time at the Rf amp may exceed its safe operating area blowing it. Assuming the input transformer can pass enough energy through before it saturates, which is likely.
3:43 I for real thought I was having a stroke and had to rewatch to convince myself otherwise lol. Seriously scared me.
On "DX" from the schematic it looks like it inserts a ceramic filter into the IF chain. Fancy.
Please fix the dial string so that it turns the right direction?
This did make me agree with Shango's suspicion someone had restrung the dial.
I greatly dislike when the dial pointer moves opposite the top of the dial tuning knob.
That's a cool DIY VU meter! 😂
Are the battery and external supply really connected in parallel in that schematic without diodes or a switch ?
Wow, that's a mess of components right there. Good patience you have navigation the cct design.
I always wondered why they bothered putting the number of transistors on the radio was it a selling point??
It was.
I'd like to find one of those. That cylindrical tuner dial is irresistibly cool, especially since I own a D7000Y Trans-Oceanic. I wonder if it has built-in dial illumination?
for a minute, i thought this radio just had the covid. but you cleared that right up @ around 43:50 . Another great save shango!
Respect !
03:43 - subtitles burst in flames.
