Zoro’s expression when Yubashiri is rusted away…it really shows how Zoro’s swords are an extension of HIMSELF. Those swords are apart of him. In fact he even talks to them….back on whiskey peak! Saying how Yubashiri is “a strong blade” or Sandai Kitetsu is”Far too sharp, it doesn’t listen to him and cuts whatever it wants and is a troublemaker, that swords should listen to their masters without fail”

If that was true then the family names wouldn't match. They all have the same family name and D initial. So unless your implying garp retroactively changed his family name to dragon's after his hypothetical daughter got married, it doesnt make sense
@@enderstar1016 huh? They’re Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, and Monkey D. Luffy. We still don’t know the significance of the name D and its been 1000 chapters. Luffy’s last name is Monkey, just like his father’s and grandfather’s. In Japan they write last names first.

Also, since you’ve picked up on the lack of death issue, the general rule of thumb to follow with this series is that if a character dies in a backstory, they’re actually dead. Actual present story death is rare, but it does happen. You’ll see the difference in handling and impact when you get to the first couple present-time deaths.
17:00 Aokiji actually mentioned Luffy’s grandpa back when they first met at the end of Long Ring Long Land. It wasn’t enough to guess he was a marine, he just compared their personalities and mentioned that he owed the man some kind of debt.
Yeah saving characters from almost certain deaths is a gripe with Oda's writing. He is inspired by Akira Toriyama where we had Goku fighting as a dead person.
It's definitely a double-edged sword. I appreciate it, because it leaves stories open to more possibilities. Especially the first series I reacted to was AoT. And every episode I was expecting a major character to die.

I love Luffy and Robins relation. From all the friends in the room, Luffy ask Robin to explain it. Because Robin just understands how Luffy thinks, kind of thinks the same way in a lot of situations.
Actually Ussop is based in a Greek fabulist and storyteller named Aesop that is famous and is considered the "father of fables". Many popular fables were written by him(supposedly since his existence is not completely confirmed, so he himself could be a fable). His fables are now collectively known as "Aesop's fables".

8:55 Chimney is probably my favorite child character in anime. Specially because you get a vibe "oh, she's about to get super annoying and repetitive" but she doesn't. I like that she kinda had her own adventure while not dragging and also being useful to the main storyline. Not trying to be "push cuteness", which is often what makes me get tired of child characters. She's the right ammount of creepy and cute, without going overboard on any.

Ussop name is very simple too, Uso (嘘) means lie. But the Lobão commenter could be right about the Aesop fable inspiration and Oda just mix up with the word Lie in Japanese.
Oda is very creative but he doesn't shy to take inspiration from real World stories, even many characters are inspire by real life people from the past and present.

eh~ it really doesn't bother me. i just figure most people in One Piece, those mainly having the will to live, usually survive. i get it makes death just a gag at this point but if Oda wants someone dead: he commits.

*No spoilers here:* here's something to consider with the way Oda writes death, philosophically: in One Piece, death is virtually never a random side effect or casualty. If/when it happens, it is always THE most important thing there; THE thing that drives the plot forward. Oda gets a bad rep for being unwilling to kill characters, but when you seriously analyze it from a narratological lens, the truth is that he takes death *so* seriously that he is only willing to reserve it for situations when it'll have the maximum possible impact on the story. That usually means circumstances where something can *only* happen if a particular character dies -- otherwise, his writing philosophy holds that the characters have more potential for future relevance if they're alive than if they're dead. Pell would still have moved the bomb whether he ended up alive or dead, Skypiea would still continue whether Pagaya lived or died, Enies Lobby would move forward regardless of Sodom & Gomorrah. The plot would've driven their deaths, and little would've come of it, rather than their deaths driving the plot forward.
Now, I get it if that feels cheap, I truly do -- just remember that you can't retroactively diminish somebody's sacrifice: if your best buddy rushed into a burning building to save a kid but never came out, it wouldn't make his sacrifice less meaningful if firemen recovered him alive that night, would it? Similar to if your friend turned into a suped-up version of the fastest-diving bird alive to move a nuke, then its blast created a downdraft that rocketed him many miles into the desert, I guess. Anyway, point is: Oda's way of writing death may not be the most realistic, because random accidents do happen, but his way allows him to get the most possible potential out of his characters, and he doesn't deem them worthy of death if that can't happen.
That's really not a fair explanation for one of Oda's biggest follies. The point is that Oda did kill Pell, Sodom, Gomorrah, and Pagaya on screen. He established stakes, killed those characters, and once the emotional impact of the death was felt and the reader had moved on, he said "nevermind" and undid it. it DOES severely hurt the story when characters are given actual death scenes and the death is undone once the reader/viewer properly morns. It's a well established trope that is universally regarded as a bad writing technique.
I still love the series regardless, but I wish all 4 of those characters had stayed dead. The story would have been better for it.
@@moist_ointment Sorry, but I'll disagree there. Simply put, I don't view it as folly because to me, those characters never died in the first place -- the danger stands regardless of whether a named character dies, because civil war/divine genocide/insurrection are dangerous by their nature alone. Nothing is undone if it doesn't happen in the first place. Like I said, a sacrifice cannot logically be "taken back," either -- once it's made, it's made. I'm not gonna claim that you have to *like it* (obviously, the majority of the fanbase's individual tastes hold that it's heavily disliked, and I get why), but I cannot justifiably agree that it severely hurts the story if to me, the story was dealt no damage for it. As I see it, it's only ever been a writing technique in service of the story, and that alone breaks its apparently ubiquitous ill regard.
Those characters might have more to give, and if nothing is lost to me narratively as a function of their survival, what business do I have doing anything other than defending those choices? I see no benefit that would have echoed forth from their deaths, only that detriment of imposing a cap on how Oda might write going forward. You're certainly free to dispute that (and I hope I haven't come off too harshly, because I appreciate that this discussion can take place), but I've already resolved with myself that I'm fine with this aspect of Oda's writing and understand the precise purpose it serves. It's eventually pretty easy to tell which "deaths" in OP are actually deaths or not, as soon as they happen, if you apply the deterministic framework laid out in my first comment -- and in so doing, one doesn't view those characters as dead to begin with. So, in that light, I can't even rightfully view them as "fake-out deaths." Anyhow, thank you for contributing your perspective nonetheless, because no set of ideas should be an unchecked monopoly.
Fake deaths are still a problem in One Piece no need to defend that. But I appreciate your effort 🔥
@@zerodlaw9622 All I'm saying is that they're not a problem to me, because I understand where Oda is coming from, and that's a perspective one might consider -- I'm not looking to make excuses for Oda so much as elaborate the purpose of characters surviving. You're totally welcome to perceive them as a problem yourself if that's what you want to make of your hermeneutic prerogative! I just won't agree with you. The solution to that problem has already worked itself out imo.

yeah Oda likes squeezing the characters for all they're worth, and then some. Death is more of a suggestion
aw yes the crazy bombshell after the tear jerker that was Merry's Viking Funeral and what a bomb it was. not only dropping the lore of Yonko (Emperors of the Sea) to us, who are the strongest of pirates there, but also the family tree that feel on top of us. grant it, Ace wasn't brought up but considering he's linage with Luffy: it's pretty wild.
and who would have guess the 2 Cover Story episodes about Coby and Helmeppo during our first bout into the Grand Line, many many episodes ago, would lead where they are today. looking less weak and pathetic then before. there must be some crazy milk in the Marines to make them grow that fast. XD
Awesome to see you finally reach this point. You've now officially been introduced to the 3 great powers of the one piece world. Just as a refresher so you can keep all these dynamics straight in your head:
1) The 7 Warlords ("Shichibukai" in some subs).
Of these you currently know of:
-Dracule "Hawkeye" Mihawk, the strongest swordsman in the world
-Jinbe (first mentioned by Yosaku at the beginning of Arlong Park. Also often spelt Jinbei or Jimbei)
-"Sir" Crocodile (former)(former bounty: 81,000,000)
-Donquixote Doflamingo (former bounty: 340,000,000)
-"Tyrant" Bartholomew Kuma (former bounty: 296,000,000)
That leaves 2 warlords yet to be introduced
2) Marine Headquarters (including the 3 admirals, and the fleet admiral)
The big hitters of the marines that you currently are aware of are:
-Fleet Admiral "Buddha" Sengoku
-Admiral "Aokiji" Kuzan (Aokiji means Blue Pheasant, where each of the admiral monikers has a colour theme and references 1 of the 3 animals in the story of momotaro)
-Admiral "Kizaru" (meaning Yellow Monkey, both Kizaru and Akainu's names were mentioned by Robin when they encountered Aokiji)
-Admiral "Akainu" (meaning Red Dog)
-Vice Admiral "Great Advisor" Tsuru
-Vice Admiral Garp "The Fist", Monkey D. Garp (despite being only a Vice Admiral, he is known to have cornered the pirate king, Gold Roger, numerous times in the past)
3) The 4 Emperors (known as "Yonko"/"Yonkou" widely in the community, which literally translates to 4 emperors)
Of these emperors, you have been introduced to 2 of them:
-"Red-Haired" Shanks
notable crewmates include Ben Beckman, Lucky Roo, and Yasopp (Usopp's dad). There is also the newbie Rockstar who has a bounty of 94,000,000.
-"Strongest Man in the World", "Whitebeard" Edward Newgate
notable crewmates include Portgas D. Ace also known as "Fire Fist" Ace, serving as Whitebeard's 2nd Division Commander. Additionally, Marshall D. Teach aka "Blackbeard" was a former crewmate of unspecified rank.
These 2 pirate captains and their crews, along with the other 2 of the 4 Emperors control the second half of the Grand Line (the New World). While these 4 Emperors are not allied, they each have enough influence in the world to be deemed as Emperors. It is due to the existence of these 4 Emperors that the World Government employs pirates of significant notoriety (the 7 Warlords) as a means to contend the influence of these 4 Emperors. This has essentially created a balance of power, with the disruption of this balance potentially having drastic consequences for the world at large. This is why the World Government (lead by the 5 Elder Stars) was both desperate to fill the missing position of Warlord that Crocodile left, and also why they were particularly worried about a possible meeting between Shanks and Whitebeard.
Also, to keep the standing of marines in order, these are the ranks of marines from most authority to least authority, with some characters you know that occupy these ranks. It is also worth noting, that generally if they have this rank from Marine Headquarters, they are most likely stronger than having this rank in East Blue for example.
1) Fleet Admiral: "Buddha" Sengoku
2) Admiral: "Aokiji" Kuzan, "Kizaru", "Akainu"
3) Vice-Admiral: Garp "The Fist", "Great Advisor" Tsuru
4) Rear-Admiral: nobody we know of as of yet
5) Commodore: Smoker (after being promoted at the end of the Alabasta saga), Pudding Pudding (fodder marine that was killed in Arlong Park)
6) Captain: "Black Cage" Hina, "Axe-Hand" Morgan, T-Bone, Nezumi
7) Commander: nobody we know of as of yet
8) Lieutenant Commander: "Iron Fist" Fullbody, Jango
9) Lieutenant: nobody we know of as of yet
10) Lieutenant Junior Grade: nobody we know of as of yet
11) Ensign: Tashigi (after being promoted at the end of the Alabasta saga)
Non-Commissioned Officers:
1) Warrant Officer: nobody we know of as of yet
2) Master Chief Petty Officer: Koby

that's pretty much the lowest rank we see, although others exist such as after Fullbody was demoted, or when Koby and Helmeppo started as chore boys. Realistically no rank particularly matters below captain, but its just some fun information to have.
Also, the now Admiral Akainu (Red Dog) is the Vice-Admiral that blew the evacuation ship at Ohara. His name is Sakazuki.
(and no, this is not a spoiler. In the manga, when his face appears in the Ohara flashback, it says below "Vice-Admiral Sakazuki, later known as Admiral Akainu")

Didn't see anyone bring it up, so even though this is an older video I will for future latecomers: Garp's dog hat only exists to hide his character design from people that had read One Piece's one-shot prototype, Romance Dawn. Oda used Garp as the previous owner of the straw hat in Romance Dawn to keep Shanks a surprise for when the series got picked up. Anyone who had read Romance Dawn in Wanted would have immediately recognized Garp's character design as Luffy's Grandpa without the dog hat, causing a messy spoiler.

Well in terms of Tom being alive its possible as its only been assumed his dead but for all we know he could just be locked up in Impel Down on part of a floor we didn't see.

Id just like to say, in defense of sodom and Gomorrahs "deaths". The character's never say they die. I never assumed they were dead just seriously hurt and could die. Sodom and Gomorrah make a sacrifice to get the straw hats as far as they can. That sacrifice might not of been life but it was painful and they did it knowing they could get hurt at least if not die, and i think 1 of them is blind still. If not then thats only cause Chopper the greatest pirate doctor helped 'em.

Ehh, they pretty clearly showed a "death". The viewer interpreted those scenes as deaths. Exposition shouldn't be needed to outright explicitly state that they died.
@@moist_ointment no no i mean from my point of view if oda kills an animal he shows it, as in, head getting cut off/neck broken or the bones of it in a pile after being eatin. Those are just examples. We didnt see a life threatining injury for a giant sea monster. All the audiance was shown was a huge creature pass out from injuries, which id like to say will almost always happen before death . He holds back on killing people more for censoring and personal taste, so every person is more durable then normal humans from the getgo. Also this personal taste of his is more cause its still a young adult story or at least targeted to younger new readers (10-17), death isn't something he avoids cause he cant do it but because he doesnt want to it seems.
Well... In offense of their deaths, You could make that argument about any character. Sometimes ACTUALLY giving your life for a cause is the whole point of an arc. Pell not dying, being able to tank a bomb at point blank range, makes the urgency of finding that bomb before it goes off seem trivial. It couldn't even take out one guy who was literally holding it when it went off. This is a massive problem with Oda's storytelling, and I see no reason to defend it.
@@shinohidanzetsu except all the story built reasons for why Pell could survive, like being a zoan type, durability and combat strength come automatically for them, then hes a trained warrior at the highest level of this kingdom. He didnt escape the explosion unharmed and could even be missing a leg. So if the bomb could even damage him, a warrior, then those rebels and low level military would have been annihilated by it especially whith all those buildings crumbling unto them from the initial explosion. And correct if im wrong but in story either in drum kingdom or alabasta they tell the reader that zoan are better physical powers overall. So if you find it hard to suspend your disbelief for that, even after given all the in world explanations, its just personal opi nion at that point

If that was true then the family names wouldn't match. They all have the same family name and D initial. So unless your implying garp retroactively changed his family name to dragon's after his hypothetical daughter got married, it doesnt make sense

In many cases of the romanization of Elbaf, I think many of us still remember when it it was first romanized and it came across as "Elbaph", so the spelling never thought to change at the time. Fan subs and fan scripts as they were back then *early 2000s when the original chapters came out and fans did the work to scan and translate back then. Got better with time.
